What If Deku Could Go Super Saiyan?
The sky above Jaku City was a bruised, suffocating purple, choked by the ashes of a fallen society.
There was no wind. The air itself seemed to have surrendered, hanging thick and stagnant, reeking of pulverized concrete, ozone, and the coppery tang of spilled blood. Below, the once-bustling urban center had been violently rearranged into a jagged, apocalyptic wasteland. Craters the size of city blocks scarred the earth. Buildings lay in shattered heaps, their steel rebar jutting toward the heavens like the broken ribs of a colossal, rotting beast.
High above this graveyard, Izuku Midoriya was fighting a war he was losing.
“Keep him in the air! Don’t let him touch the ground!”
The command, screamed hours ago by a hero who was now likely dead or bleeding out, echoed relentlessly in Izuku’s mind. It was the only tether holding his fracturing sanity together. Keep him up. Keep him up. If he touches the ground, everyone dies. Decay will take them all.
Izuku gritted his teeth, his jaw aching so fiercely he tasted blood. He was suspended in the sky, buoyed by the Seventh User’s Quirk, Float. His body was a tapestry of agony. His left arm was completely shattered, the bones reduced to a jagged mosaic of splinters that ground against each other with every twitch of his muscles. The limb hung uselessly at his side, wrapped in a crude, tight cast of Blackwhip just to keep the internal hemorrhaging from killing him outright. His right arm wasn't much better; the skin was a bruised, mottled purple, humming with the terrifying, self-destructive backlash of pushing One For All to one hundred percent.
And yet, it wasn't enough. It was never enough.
Across from him, hovering in the smoke-filled air through a sickening manipulation of kinetic force and raw power, was Tomura Shigaraki. Or rather, the entity that was rapidly consuming Tomura Shigaraki.
The villain’s white hair whipped wildly around a face that was half-madness, half-cold calculation. His body was a horror show of modifications. The Nomu-like bio-engineering Doctor Garaki had subjected him to made him nearly indestructible. Izuku had hit him with Smashes that would have leveled mountains, impacts that had blown away the cloud cover and reshaped the air pressure for miles. He had watched Shigaraki’s jaw unhinge, his ribs cave in, his flesh tear.
But then, the grotesque hum of Super Regeneration would kick in. Muscles knitted back together like squirming worms. Bones snapped back into place with a sickening crack-crack-crack.
"Is that all, little hero?" Shigaraki’s voice echoed across the sky, layered with the insidious, dual harmonic of All For One. "You're breaking yourself to pieces just to delay the inevitable. Look down, Izuku Midoriya. Look at your failure."
Izuku didn't want to look, but his peripheral vision betrayed him.
Far below, amidst the rubble, the heroes were falling. He could see the crumpled, motionless form of Gran Torino, the elderly hero’s chest caved in, his yellow cape stained crimson. Gran Torino... The man who had taught him how to move, how to breathe, how to make One For All his own. Crushed like an insect.
He saw Eraserhead. Mr. Aizawa. The man who had protected Class 1-A with his life, time and time again. Izuku’s mind flashed back to the horrifying image from mere minutes ago—Aizawa, desperate to stop the Quirk-Destroying bullet from taking his Erasure, raising a knife and severing his own leg without a moment's hesitation. Now, his teacher lay in a pool of his own blood, unconscious, his eyes closed. The tether of Erasure was broken. Shigaraki had access to everything.
"They're all dying because of you," Shigaraki taunted, holding out a hand. Black, jagged tendrils of energy—the Rivet Stab Quirk—began to coalesce at his fingertips, writhing like vipers scenting prey. "If you had just handed over One For All, I would have killed them quickly. Now? Now I think I'll let them bleed."
"Shut up!" Izuku roared, the sound tearing at his raw throat.
Emerald lightning exploded around him, cracking like a whip through the stagnant air. He forced his right arm up, ignoring the agonizing scream of his torn ligaments. He didn't have time to think. He didn't have time to mourn. He had to be the Symbol.
One For All: 100%!
Izuku kicked off the air itself, breaking the sound barrier with a concussive BOOM. The sudden acceleration tore the skin on his calves, but he ignored it. He closed the distance in a microsecond, rearing his good arm back.
"Wyoming... SMASH!"
He drove his fist directly into Shigaraki’s sternum. The impact was apocalyptic. A shockwave of compressed air erupted from the point of contact, creating a localized hurricane that ripped the roofs off the remaining buildings below. Shigaraki’s eyes widened as his ribs shattered—again. He was launched backward, a human bullet tearing through the sky.
But Izuku knew it wouldn't last. He fired Blackwhip from his teeth, the dark energy tendrils shooting forward, wrapping around Shigaraki’s ankle, and violently yanking the villain back toward him.
"Detroit..." Izuku spun, using the momentum of the pull to generate even more centrifugal force. He brought his leg up for a devastating axe kick. "...SMASH!"
His heel connected with Shigaraki’s skull. The villain plummeted downward, rocketing toward the earth.
No! If he touches the ground—!
Izuku dove after him, firing more Blackwhip tendrils to catch him. But as he descended, a sickening sound reached his ears. A wet, tearing noise.
Shigaraki wasn't falling helplessly. He had manipulated the air pressure to halt his descent. As Izuku flew toward him, Shigaraki looked up, his face a ruined, bloody mess that was already stitching itself back together. And he was smiling.
"Too predictable," the villain hissed.
From Shigaraki’s back, six massive, spear-like tendrils of red and black energy erupted. They shot upward, defying gravity, moving at a speed that Izuku, exhausted and in mid-air, could not possibly evade.
Time seemed to dilate. The world ground to an agonizing, syrupy crawl.
Izuku’s emerald eyes tracked the lethal spikes as they spiraled toward his chest, his stomach, his head. His brain fired desperate signals to his limbs—Dodge! Shift! Use Float!—but his body, battered and pushed millions of miles past its limit, simply refused to respond. His muscles locked. The green lightning of One For All flickered and dimmed, like a dying star.
Is this... is this it? Izuku thought, a cold numbness washing over him. I couldn't save them. I couldn't save anyone.
He braced for the impalement. He waited for the cold steel of the Quirks to pierce his heart.
But the blow never came.
Instead, a blinding flash of orange light intercepted his vision. A concussive blast of heat washed over his face, accompanied by the familiar, sharp scent of nitroglycerin.
"GET OUT OF THE WAY, YOU DAMN NERD!"
Katsuki Bakugo didn't think.
For the entirety of this war, Bakugo had been watching. He had watched Izuku fly into the sky, wrapped in a power that he couldn't comprehend, fighting a monster that defied the laws of nature. He had watched the boy who used to trail behind him in the woods, the Quirkless nobody he had mocked, ascend to a realm of power where no one else could follow.
Bakugo had spent months coming to terms with his own guilt, his own weakness. He had promised himself that he would never let Izuku carry the burden alone again. He was Katsuki Bakugo, the future Number One Hero. He was supposed to win. He was supposed to be the strongest.
But seeing Izuku up there, breaking his own body, fighting a solitary, desperate battle... it tore something loose in Bakugo’s chest. The realization hit him, cold and absolute: He's trying to do it all by himself again. He's going to die.
When Bakugo saw Shigaraki fire the Rivet Stab, his brain didn't form a plan. His body simply moved. It was the purest manifestation of heroism—the instinct to save, devoid of logic or self-preservation.
He ignited his gauntlets, pushing his Explosion Quirk to its absolute, agonizing maximum. He propelled himself through the air like a comet, intercepting the trajectory of the black tendrils.
He shoved Izuku out of the way just as the spikes arrived.
SHCK.
SHCK.
SHCK.
The sound of flesh giving way to steel was deafening in its finality.
Izuku tumbled through the air, his momentum thrown off by Bakugo’s shove. He blinked, the world spinning, trying to process what had just happened. He managed to stabilize himself with Float, gasping for breath.
He looked up.
The breath vanished from his lungs. The green lightning surrounding his body sputtered and died completely.
Suspended in the air, silhouetted against the dark, ashen clouds, was Katsuki Bakugo.
Three massive, black tendrils had pierced his body. One went straight through his left shoulder. Another impaled his abdomen, emerging from his back in a shower of crimson. The third had pierced his right lung, just inches from his heart.
Blood—so much blood—erupted from the wounds, raining down toward the earth in a macabre, ruby shower. Bakugo’s eyes were wide, glassy, frozen in a look of absolute shock. His mouth opened, but no sound came out, only a thick cascade of blood that spilled over his chin and down his hero costume.
"K...Kacchan...?" Izuku’s voice was small, the voice of a frightened four-year-old boy in a playground, not the successor of the world’s greatest power.
Shigaraki laughed. It was a wet, grating sound that clawed at the inside of Izuku’s skull. The villain retracted the tendrils with a violent jerk.
Bakugo’s limp body dropped like a stone.
"NO!" Izuku shrieked.
He dove. Ignoring the pain, ignoring the exhaustion, he pushed his legs and shot downward, catching Bakugo in his arms before he could hit the debris below. The impact of catching him jarred Izuku’s broken arm, sending a white-hot spike of agony through his nervous system, but he didn't care.
He landed heavily on a relatively flat slab of concrete that used to be the roof of a hospital. He laid Bakugo down gently, his hands hovering over the catastrophic wounds, shaking violently.
"Kacchan. Kacchan, hey, look at me," Izuku stammered, his vision blurring with hot, rapid tears. He pressed his good hand against the massive hole in Bakugo's abdomen, trying to stem the torrential flow of blood. It was warm. It was too warm. It slipped through Izuku’s fingers like water. "Don't move. I'm going to get you down. We're going to get Recovery Girl—"
Bakugo coughed, a wet, rattling sound that sprayed blood onto Izuku’s dirt-streaked face. His crimson eyes rolled, struggling to focus on Izuku.
"...Stop..." Bakugo gasped, his voice barely a whisper, bubbling with fluid. "...stop trying to... do everything... yourself... you damn... idiot..."
Bakugo’s hand twitched, reaching up weakly. His blood-soaked fingers brushed against the fabric of Izuku’s torn hero suit. Then, his eyes rolled back, the fierce, defiant light in them fading into a dull, terrifying emptiness. His arm went limp, dropping to the concrete with a dull thud. His chest stopped moving.
"Kacchan?" Izuku whispered.
Silence.
"Kacchan, wake up. Wake up! Please! Katsuki!"
Izuku pressed harder on the wounds, his tears falling freely now, mixing with the blood on Bakugo’s chest. He poured his pathetic attempts at first aid into a body that was already gone. The boy who had been his entire world—his bully, his rival, his symbol of victory, his closest friend—was dead. He had died because Izuku wasn't fast enough. Because Izuku wasn't strong enough.
Above them, Shigaraki descended slowly, his feet touching down on the concrete slab a few yards away. The villain tilted his head, observing the scene with a twisted look of morbid curiosity and profound disappointment.
"How tragically pointless," Shigaraki sneered, his voice cutting through the ringing in Izuku’s ears. "He threw his life away for a piece of trash that's already broken. Look at you. The great successor. The Symbol of Peace. Crying over a corpse."
Izuku didn't move. He didn't speak. He remained kneeling over Bakugo, his head bowed, his messy green hair shadowing his eyes.
"This is the reality of your 'hero society,' Midoriya," Shigaraki continued, spreading his arms. "You talk about saving people, but all you do is prolong their suffering. You give them false hope. You made him think his life had value, that his sacrifice would mean something. But it doesn't. He's just a slab of dead meat, and you're next."
A slab of dead meat.
Inside Izuku’s mind, something shifted.
It wasn't a loud snap. It wasn't an explosion of anger. It was a quiet, almost imperceptible click. Like the sound of a heavy steel vault door locking shut.
The tears stopped. The ragged, gasping sobs that had been tearing through his chest ceased instantly. His breathing slowed, becoming deep, measured, and eerily silent. The overwhelming, paralyzing grief that had threatened to drown him vanished, replaced by an absolute, crushing void.
Deep within the metaphysical realm of One For All, chaos had erupted.
The void of stars and swirling colors that housed the vestiges of the previous users was trembling violently. The First User, Yoichi Shigaraki, stood in the center of the boundless space, his eyes wide with unprecedented terror.
Around him, the other vestiges were manifesting, their phantom bodies flickering like static on a broken television screen. Daigoro Banjo, the Fifth User, was clutching his head, groaning in pain. Nana Shimura, the Seventh, was on her knees, looking up at the sky of their mental landscape.
"What is happening?!" Banjo yelled over the sudden, roaring cacophony that echoed through the realm. "The core! Look at the core!"
In the center of the vestige world, the glowing singularity that represented the stockpiled power of One For All was changing. For decades, it had been a brilliant, warm sun of multicolored light, representing the hopes, dreams, and Quirks of the users who had passed it down.
Now, the core was pulsating violently. The warmth was gone, replaced by a searing, oppressive heat. And the color... the color was shifting.
The vibrant spectrum was being swallowed by a blinding, aggressive gold.
"He's drawing on too much power!" En, the Sixth User, shouted, trying to shield his eyes from the blinding glare. "He's going to rip the Quirk apart! And his body with it!"
"It's not the Quirk!" Yoichi cried out, his voice cutting through the panic. He stepped closer to the core, his ethereal form struggling against the sheer pressure radiating from it. "This isn't One For All! It's... it's him."
Nana forced herself to stand, moving to Yoichi’s side. "What do you mean it's him? What is this energy? It feels... ancient. And furious. It’s burning me just to stand near it!"
Yoichi looked at his hands, watching as the golden light illuminated them. "One For All stockpiles power. It stockpiles physical strength, speed, and the Quirks of its users. But we forgot something fundamental, Nana. We forgot what power is."
Yoichi turned to the other vestiges, his eyes reflecting the terrifying golden storm.
"Before Quirks existed, before humanity mutated, there were legends. Myths of humans who could tap into the latent, biological energy of their own cells. Life force. Ki. It’s a dormant genetic trait, buried under millions of years of evolution, rendered obsolete by the arrival of Quirks."
The golden sun in the center of the realm expanded, a wave of heat washing over the vestiges, carrying with it a wave of raw, unfiltered emotion. It wasn't heroic resolve. It wasn't the desire to save. It was pure, unadulterated, murderous rage.
"Ninth’s body is broken," Yoichi explained, his voice trembling. "His Quirks are failing him. His mind has just experienced a trauma so profound that his survival instincts have bypassed his Quirk Factor entirely. One For All isn't stockpiling his Quirk anymore. It’s reached down into the deepest, most primal core of his DNA... and it's stockpiling his fury. It's forcing an evolution."
Banjo stared at the core, terrified. "You're saying the kid is... what? Mutating? Right now?!"
"He's breaking the ceiling of human limitation," Yoichi whispered, a tear of golden light tracing down his cheek as he felt Izuku’s agonizing sorrow bleed into the rage. "God help whoever is standing in front of him right now."
Back in the ruins of Jaku, Shigaraki stopped laughing.
He frowned, tilting his head. Something was wrong.
The air had changed. The oppressive, stagnant heat of the battlefield was suddenly whipped away by a violent, localized gale. The wind didn't feel like it was blowing past them; it felt like it was being sucked inward, drawn toward the kneeling form of Izuku Midoriya like a vacuum.
"What are you doing?" Shigaraki demanded, stepping forward.
Izuku didn't answer. He remained perfectly still over Bakugo's body. But the environment around him was losing its mind.
Pebbles and chunks of shattered concrete began to vibrate on the ground. Slowly, defying the laws of gravity, they began to float upward, rising into the air as if the earth had forgotten how to hold them down. The puddles of blood on the concrete began to ripple, tiny droplets tearing themselves from the surface and suspending themselves in the air.
Thump-thump.
The sound was massive, echoing across the desolate ruins. It wasn't coming from the sky. It was coming from Izuku’s chest. His heartbeat was so loud, so violent, it sounded like war drums.
"I said, what are you doing?!" Shigaraki snarled, his unease turning into irritation. He raised his hand, preparing to unleash a wave of Decay. "Die."
Before he could touch the ground, the sky shattered.
The dark, bruised clouds above them were violently blown away, not by a physical force, but by an eruption of sheer energy. A pillar of blinding, incandescent golden light erupted from Izuku’s body, piercing the heavens and illuminating the ruined city in an ethereal, terrifying glow.
The shockwave knocked Shigaraki off his feet, sending him skidding backward across the concrete. He dug his fingers into the ground to anchor himself, shielding his eyes from the blinding light. "What is this?! A hidden Quirk?! All For One didn't say anything about this!"
Inside the pillar of light, Izuku Midoriya stood up.
The transformation was violent, a brutal restructuring of his anatomy fueled by an energy his body was never meant to hold. His destroyed left arm, hanging limply just seconds ago, jerked violently. The golden aura—dense, crackling with static electricity and pure, burning Ki—wrapped around the shattered limb like an exoskeleton of light. The bones didn't heal, but they were forced rigidly into place by the sheer pressure of the energy, rendering the arm operational through force of will alone.
His muscles bulged, tearing the fabric of his hero suit as they expanded, supercharged by the biological energy flooding his cells. The green lightning of One For All, usually erratic and wild, was consumed entirely, replaced by a roaring, continuous flame of golden aura that burned inches off his skin.
And then, his hair changed.
The messy, dark green curls defied gravity, spiking violently upward. As the energy reached its zenith, the pigment in his hair was bleached away, shifting from green to a radiant, luminescent yellow.
The light receded slightly, pulling back into the aura that flamed around his body. The rocks around him continued to float, disintegrating into dust from the ambient heat he was projecting.
Shigaraki stood up, brushing the dust from his shoulders. He stared at the glowing figure, his lips curling into a sneer. "A power-up. How cliché. You think changing your hair color is going to bring your friend back, Midoriya? You're just burning out your life force faster."
Izuku slowly lifted his head.
Shigaraki froze. The words died in his throat.
Izuku’s eyes were no longer the warm, determined emerald green that Shigaraki despised. The irises had shifted to a piercing, frozen teal. There were no pupils. There was no humanity, no compassion, no heroic restraint in that gaze. Looking into those eyes was like staring into the heart of a dying star—cold, ancient, and utterly merciless.
The boy who wanted to save everyone was gone.
"I..." Izuku spoke. His voice was different. It sounded like two voices overlapping—one his own, raspy and dark, the other a low, thrumming vibration of raw power. "...will make you suffer."
Shigaraki felt a sensation he hadn't experienced since he had awakened from his capsule. A cold, slithering feeling that crept up his spine and settled in the base of his skull.
Fear.
"Don't mock me!" Shigaraki roared, trying to drown out the fear with anger. He activated his Air Cannon and Springlike Limbs, launching himself forward at blinding speed, his hand outstretched to touch Izuku’s face and rot him into dust. "DIE, YOU NONSENSE—!"
He blinked.
Izuku wasn't there.
There was no sound of movement. No concussive boom of displaced air. Izuku simply ceased to occupy the space he had been standing in, leaving behind a faint afterimage of golden light.
Shigaraki’s eyes widened. Where—?
A hand grabbed the back of Shigaraki’s neck.
It wasn't a gentle grab. It was a vice grip of unbreakable steel. The sheer force of the fingers digging into his flesh shattered his cervical vertebrae instantly, severing his spinal cord before his Super Regeneration even realized it needed to heal.
Shigaraki gasped, his body going paralyzed from the neck down as he was hoisted into the air.
"You talk too much," the dual-toned, demonic voice whispered directly into his ear.
Izuku didn't throw him. He didn't use a Smash. He simply raised his free hand, balled it into a fist, and drove it into the center of Shigaraki's back.
The impact did not create a shockwave in the air. The golden energy channeled all of the kinetic force entirely into Shigaraki’s body.
A sickening, wet CRUNCH echoed across the silent battlefield. The force of the blow bypassed Shigaraki’s engineered durability entirely. The villain’s chest cavity exploded outward, a geyser of blood, shattered ribs, and ruptured organs erupting from his front as Izuku’s fist punched cleanly through his torso.
Shigaraki’s mouth opened in a silent scream, his eyes bulging as he looked down at the massive, gaping hole in his chest, illuminated by the golden light of the fist that had impaled him.
Izuku ripped his arm out, letting the paralyzed, dying villain drop to the ground like a discarded ragdoll.
The Golden Super Saiyan stood over the broken body of the demon king, his teal eyes glowing coldly in the darkness. The earth continued to tremble beneath his feet, weeping under the weight of a power the world was never meant to see.
The battle wasn't over. But the Izuku Midoriya who had started it was dead. And what had taken his place was not a hero.
It was an executioner.
The human body, even one heavily modified by the darkest depths of forbidden science, was not designed to survive having its center of mass annihilated.
Tomura Shigaraki lay in the cratered ruin of the hospital’s reinforced roof, staring blankly up at the bleeding purple sky. A hole the size of a cannonball had been punched directly through his torso. Shards of his own spine, pulverized ribs, and liquefied organs had been violently ejected from his back, painting the concrete behind him in a gruesome, macabre splash of crimson.
For a span of three seconds, there was absolute silence.
Then, the agonizing hum of Super Regeneration kicked in.
Normally, the Quirk worked instantaneously, a bubbling, writhing miracle of bio-engineering that could knit severed limbs and reattach decapitated heads in mere moments. But this was different. As the cellular mass tried to bridge the massive gap in Shigaraki’s chest, it met resistance. The edges of the wound were seared black, but they weren't just burned—they were glowing.
Microscopic particles of golden energy—Ki—lingered in his torn flesh, acting like corrosive acid against the regenerative cells. Every time the muscle tissue tried to connect, the golden sparks flared, burning the new cells away in a hiss of steam.
Shigaraki opened his mouth, a wet, gargling scream tearing from his throat. The pain was unlike anything he had ever felt. It bypassed the numbness Doctor Garaki had instilled in him. It bypassed his madness. It was raw, blinding agony.
Through the haze of his suffering, Shigaraki’s crimson eyes darted upward.
Standing ten feet away was the cause.
Izuku Midoriya did not look like a boy anymore. He didn't look like a hero. The golden aura that violently cascaded from his body roared like a jet engine, casting long, stark shadows across the battlefield. The ambient heat radiating from him was so intense that the concrete beneath his red shoes was beginning to vitrify, turning into a slick, molten glass. His hair, bleached to a luminescent, spiky gold, danced wildly in the localized gravity storm his very presence generated.
But it was the eyes. The teal, pupil-less voids that stared down at Shigaraki with a terrifying, absolute nothingness. There was no hatred in them. Hatred implied a relationship, a feeling directed at a fellow living creature.
Izuku was looking at Shigaraki the way a man looks at an insect before stepping on it.
"What... what are you...?" Shigaraki rasped, blood bubbling over his dry, cracked lips.
Izuku didn't answer. He didn't even blink. He simply took a step forward.
The sound of his footfalls shouldn't have been audible over the roaring of his aura, but they echoed with a heavy, rhythmic dread. Thump. Thump.
A few hundred yards away, navigating the treacherous, crumbling ruins of the city streets, Shoto Todoroki and Tenya Iida were pushing their bodies past exhaustion. Iida’s engines were sputtering, emitting thick, black smoke, while Todoroki was practically dragging the unconscious, bloodied form of their homeroom teacher, Shota Aizawa.
They had felt the shift in the atmosphere before they saw it. The sudden drop in air pressure had popped their ears, followed immediately by an earthquake that had brought the last remaining standing structures tumbling to the ground.
And then, they saw the light.
A pillar of blinding gold had pierced the dark, ashen sky, illuminating Jaku City like a second, furious sun.
"Todoroki!" Iida shouted over the howling wind, shielding his eyes behind his cracked helmet. "What is that?! Did Endeavor use a Prominence Burn?!"
"No!" Todoroki yelled back, his mismatched eyes wide with a mixture of awe and absolute terror. He knew his father’s flames intimately. Endeavor’s fire was violent, but it was organic. It was heat. This light... it felt heavy. It felt like standing at the bottom of the ocean. "That’s not fire! And it’s coming from where Midoriya was fighting!"
Leaving Aizawa in a relatively secure, hollowed-out basement, the two heroes scrambled up the mountain of debris, cresting a ridge of shattered pavement that overlooked the hospital sector.
When they reached the top, they froze.
The battlefield was a vision of hell, illuminated in gold. But their eyes didn't immediately go to the glowing god in the center. They went to the broken, bleeding heap lying on a slab of concrete near the edge of the crater.
"Bakugo!" Todoroki gasped.
Iida activated his Recipro Burst, ignoring the agonizing tearing of his exhausted calf muscles. He blurred across the distance, Todoroki riding a slide of ice right behind him. They reached the blonde hero in seconds.
Bakugo was a gruesome sight. The three massive puncture wounds in his chest and shoulder were bleeding profusely. His skin was the color of ash. He wasn't breathing.
"No, no, no," Iida chanted, dropping to his knees. He didn't know where to apply pressure; there were too many holes.
Todoroki didn't hesitate. He slammed his right hand onto Bakugo’s chest, directly over the massive hole in his abdomen. "Move!" he commanded Iida.
Todoroki unleashed a desperate, absolute zero wave of ice. He wasn't just freezing the surface; he pushed the ice deep into the wounds, aggressively flash-freezing the severed arteries and veins to halt the catastrophic blood loss. The sheer, shocking cold of the ice hitting Bakugo’s internal organs acted like a crude, violent defibrillator.
Bakugo’s body arched off the ground. A horrific, ragged gasp tore from his lungs, spraying a mist of red into the air. His crimson eyes snapped open, wide and unfocused, filled with the primal terror of a soul that had just been dragged back from the precipice of the void.
"Bakugo! Stay with us!" Todoroki yelled, keeping his hands firmly pressed to the ice to maintain the temperature.
Bakugo couldn't speak. He was drowning in pain, his mind fractured. But as his blurry vision tried to process his surroundings, his eyes locked onto the center of the battlefield.
He saw the golden light. He saw the spiky yellow hair. He saw the green lightning of One For All replaced by a terrifying, divine fire.
...Deku? Bakugo’s mind whispered.
"Todoroki..." Iida breathed, standing up slowly, his mechanical legs trembling. He pointed toward the glowing figure. "What... what is happening to Midoriya?"
Todoroki looked up. His breath hitched in his throat.
Through his unique upbringing, Todoroki had been forced to study the anatomy of Quirks, the physical toll power took on the human body. He had seen Midoriya break his arms countless times. He knew what a shattered limb looked like.
Midoriya’s arms were currently broken. Todoroki could see the unnatural bends, the places where the bone had clearly snapped and splintered beneath the skin of his torn costume. And yet... the arms weren't dangling.
The golden energy that surrounded Midoriya wasn't just an emission. It was acting as a physical substance. The light had wrapped itself tightly around Midoriya’s shattered arms, forming glowing, translucent bands of energy that bound the bones in place. It was a bio-electric exoskeleton. The Ki was doing the job of muscles, tendons, and ligaments, forcing the ruined limbs to operate through sheer, unadulterated force of will.
"He's not using a Quirk," Todoroki whispered, profound horror dawning on him. "That's not One For All. He's... he's burning his own life force to hold his body together."
Shigaraki finally managed to force the golden particles out of his wound. With a sickening squelch, the flesh knitted back together, closing the hole in his chest. He gasped for air, his body trembling violently from the trauma.
He looked up at the golden boy approaching him.
The fear that had taken root in Shigaraki’s chest instantly curdled into a rabid, defensive fury. He was Tomura Shigaraki. He was the king of the underworld, the inheritor of All For One, the man who was destined to turn this entire pathetic society to dust! He would not be looked down upon by a Quirkless nobody!
"DON'T LOOK AT ME LIKE THAT!" Shigaraki screamed, his voice distorting into a monstrous, dual-layered roar.
He threw his hands onto the concrete floor. Decay activated at maximum output.
A tsunami of gray, decaying energy erupted outward, turning the concrete, the steel rebar, and the very dust in the air into a tidal wave of disintegration. It was a wave of death that could wipe out a city block in a second. It rushed toward the Golden Super Saiyan, hungry to turn his flesh to ash.
Izuku didn't dodge. He didn't jump. He didn't even break his stride.
He walked directly into the wave of Decay.
Todoroki and Iida screamed in horror. But the scream died in their throats as they witnessed the impossible.
The gray wave of disintegration hit the golden aura surrounding Izuku—and it stopped. The Decay couldn't penetrate the sheer density of the Ki. The golden fire was projecting an outward pressure so immense that the microscopic particles of Decay were being incinerated before they could even touch Izuku’s clothes. The wave parted around him like water breaking against the prow of an unstoppable dreadnought.
Izuku walked through the lethal wave completely unharmed, his teal eyes locked onto Shigaraki.
"Impossible!" Shigaraki gasped, scrambling backward like a cornered rat. "Air Cannon! Heavy Payload! Radio Waves!"
He stacked three Quirks simultaneously, thrusting his palms forward. A shockwave of condensed, explosive air, laced with bio-electric interference, blasted out like a cannon shot. It was an attack that had nearly killed Endeavor.
The attack hit Izuku squarely in the chest.
There was a deafening BOOM, and a cloud of dust obscured the golden figure.
Shigaraki panted, a manic grin spreading across his face. "Yes! Die! Turn to—!"
A golden hand shot out of the smoke and wrapped around Shigaraki’s throat.
The villain didn't even have time to register the movement. One millisecond Izuku was in the dust cloud; the next, he was in front of him. The speed wasn't just fast; it was a total erasure of the distance between them.
Izuku lifted Shigaraki off the ground with one hand. The villain clawed desperately at the golden arm holding him, trying to activate Decay on Izuku’s skin. But his five fingers couldn't breach the barrier of light that coated Izuku’s flesh. The golden Ki burned Shigaraki’s fingers, searing them black.
"You're right," Izuku spoke, his dual-toned voice vibrating through Shigaraki’s skull. "This is the reality of hero society. We save. We protect."
Izuku tilted his head, his teal eyes narrowing slightly.
"But I’m not a hero right now."
With a flick of his wrist, Izuku slammed Shigaraki into the ground. The force of the impact created a crater fifty feet wide, instantly vaporizing the remaining concrete and exposing the bedrock beneath the city. Shigaraki’s body bounced, every bone in his back shattering simultaneously.
Before Shigaraki could reach the apex of the bounce, Izuku vanished again.
He reappeared directly above the villain.
Golden... Izuku’s mind supplied the word automatically, an echo of a boy who used to name his attacks. But there was no name for this. There was only violence.
He delivered a spinning heel kick to Shigaraki’s stomach.
The sound of the impact was like a bomb going off. Shigaraki was folded in half, his internal organs turning to jelly, and he was launched horizontally through the air at Mach 3. He smashed through the remains of a skyscraper, the steel girders snapping like twigs against his body, before crashing into the side of a collapsed mountain of rubble miles away.
Izuku slowly lowered his leg. He didn't rush. He simply turned, his golden aura trailing behind him like a fiery cape, and kicked off the ground.
He arrived at the rubble pile before the dust had even settled.
Shigaraki was pulling himself out of the debris, coughing up thick clots of black blood. His jaw was dislocated, hanging loosely by a thread of regenerating muscle. His white hair was matted with blood and dirt. The terrifying, god-like villain who had laughed at the deaths of heroes was gone, replaced by a broken, hyperventilating animal.
He's too fast, the voice of All For One echoed in Shigaraki’s mind, layered with genuine, uncharacteristic panic. Tomura, this is not a Quirk. This is an anomaly. We cannot win this exchange. His power output is multiplying by the second! We must retreat!
Shut up! Shigaraki’s mind screamed back. I am the King! I have the ultimate body!
"I WILL KILL YOU!" Shigaraki roared, forcing his dislocated jaw into place with a sickening snap. He lunged at Izuku, his arms morphing into a grotesque, fleshy mass of blades, tendrils, and mouths, courtesy of an amalgamation of stolen mutant Quirks.
Izuku stood his ground.
As the mountain of flesh and blades descended upon him, Izuku blurred into motion. He didn't use broad, sweeping Smashes. He fought with an ancient, brutal precision.
His golden fists became a blur of light. He parried a blade-arm, shattering the bone-steel upon impact. He stepped inside Shigaraki’s guard and delivered a rapid-fire sequence of blows to the villain’s torso—thirty punches in the span of a single second. Each punch carried the localized force of a nuclear detonation.
Shigaraki couldn't even scream. The air was violently forced from his lungs as his chest cavity was repeatedly, rhythmically pulped. Super Regeneration tried to heal the damage, but Izuku was destroying the cells faster than they could multiply.
Izuku ducked under a desperate, sweeping hook, grabbed Shigaraki’s outstretched arm by the wrist, and planted his foot on the villain’s armpit.
With a terrifyingly calm expression, Izuku pulled.
The tearing of flesh and the snapping of the humerus bone was a sickening crescendo. Izuku ripped Shigaraki’s right arm completely out of its socket. Black blood fountained into the air as the villain finally found the breath to shriek in agony.
Izuku didn't drop the severed arm. He spun, using the dismembered limb like a club, and battered Shigaraki across the face with it.
Shigaraki was sent spinning wildly, crashing into the dirt, rolling end over end until he came to a halt on his back, a pathetic, limbless, bleeding mess.
From their vantage point, Todoroki, Iida, and a barely conscious Bakugo watched the one-sided massacre in absolute, suffocating silence.
This wasn't a fight. It was an execution.
"Stop..." Bakugo gasped, his voice barely a rattle in his throat. The ice in his chest was numbing the pain, but the cold was seeping into his heart. He forced his eyes to stay open, watching the golden monster brutalize the villain. "Stop... Deku... you're... you're gonna lose..."
"Lose the fight?" Iida asked, his voice trembling as he watched Midoriya rip off Shigaraki’s arm.
"No," Bakugo whispered, a single tear cutting a track through the blood and dirt on his cheek. "He's gonna... lose himself."
Todoroki understood. Midoriya Izuku, the boy who cried when he won a sports festival, the boy who broke his fingers to save a child he barely knew, was systematically dismantling a human being with the cold, unfeeling efficiency of a slaughterhouse machine. The trauma of thinking he had lost Bakugo, the despair of failing his mentors, had pushed his mind past the breaking point. The Super Saiyan form was protecting his body, but it was suffocating his soul under a mountain of wrath.
If Midoriya crossed this line—if he murdered Shigaraki in cold blood, fueled by hatred and vengeance—he would never be the same. The Symbol of Peace would be dead, replaced by a god of fear.
"Midoriya!" Todoroki screamed at the top of his lungs, cupping his hands around his mouth. "Stop! Bakugo is alive! Midoriya! HE'S ALIVE!"
But the wind was howling too loudly. The localized atmospheric disturbances created by the golden aura drowned out Todoroki’s voice. And even if he could be heard, Izuku’s ears were deaf to everything except the sound of his own thundering heartbeat and the crushing desire to erase the monster in front of him.
Within the vestige realm, the golden sun was expanding, threatening to consume the entire mental landscape.
Yoichi Shigaraki was on his knees, holding his hands up against the blinding, scorching light. Beside him, Daigoro Banjo and Nana Shimura were doing the same. The very fabric of One For All was vibrating, struggling to contain the infinite, raging ocean of Ki that Izuku was drawing from his cells.
"He can't hear us!" Nana cried, tears streaming down her phantom face. "He's locked us out! He's completely consumed by the rage!"
"The boy's mind is tethered to the trauma!" En shouted over the roaring wind of the realm. "He thinks his friend is dead! He thinks he failed!"
Yoichi stared into the golden fire. He could feel Izuku’s thoughts. They weren't complex. They were a singular, repeating mantra.
Destroy. Erase. Protect. Erase. Erase. Erase.
"He's preparing to end it," Yoichi realized, his ethereal eyes widening in terror. "He's not just going to kill Tomura. He's gathering enough ambient energy to vaporize the entire city sector. If he releases that attack, everyone still alive in Jaku will be caught in the blast radius!"
"Ninth! Stop!" Banjo roared, charging toward the golden core, trying to reach out and touch Izuku’s consciousness. But the heat of the Ki violently repelled him, throwing the Fifth User backward. "We can't get through! He's a runaway train!"
In the physical world, Izuku slowly floated into the air, rising twenty feet above the broken, regenerating body of Tomura Shigaraki.
The golden aura surrounding Izuku suddenly retracted, pulling inward, tightening against his skin until he glowed like a solid statue of starlight. The chaotic wind died down. The floating rocks dropped to the ground.
An eerie, terrifying stillness settled over the battlefield.
Izuku brought his hands to his sides, drawing them back toward his right hip. He cupped his palms together, not quite touching, leaving a small space between them.
He took a deep breath.
The stillness was shattered.
It wasn't a wind this time. It was a vacuum. The ambient energy of the planet itself—the kinetic force of the air, the static electricity in the clouds, the latent life force of the earth—was violently sucked toward Izuku’s cupped hands.
A sphere of pure, condensed golden energy began to form between his palms. It started the size of a golf ball, but as it drew in the surrounding energy, it rapidly expanded, humming with a high-pitched, oscillating screech that made the fillings in Todoroki’s teeth ache from a mile away.
The air pressure dropped so rapidly that the clouds above, previously blown away, began to aggressively swirl back toward the center of the battlefield, forming a massive, dark hurricane directly above Izuku. Green lightning from One For All violently lashed out from the golden sphere, mixing with the pure Ki.
He was blending the ultimate stockpiling Quirk with the ultimate biological energy.
Ka... Izuku’s mind hummed, an ancient, instinctual rhythm guiding his movements.
Me... The sphere grew to the size of a boulder, glowing with an intensity that rivaled the sun.
On the ground, Shigaraki’s arm finally regenerated. He dragged himself backward, his eyes wide, his pupils constricted to pinpricks of absolute terror. He could feel the energy gathering above him. It wasn't an attack meant to hurt him. It was an attack meant to erase his molecules from existence. It was a complete, localized extinction event.
Tomura, relinquish control immediately! All For One’s voice was no longer a suggestion in the back of his mind. It was a frantic, desperate scream. He will eradicate our cells completely! Not even Super Regeneration can heal from atomic vaporization! Give me the body!
"No!" Shigaraki screamed, grasping at his own head, tearing his white hair out in chunks. "I am the future! I am the destruction!"
YOU ARE A FOOL!
Shigaraki’s body seized. His back arched, his bones popping as a foreign, ancient will violently usurped his nervous system. Shigaraki’s crimson eyes rolled back into his head, and when they snapped forward again, they were different. The manic, childish rage was gone, replaced by a cold, calculating, and deeply terrified intellect.
All For One was now driving the vessel.
The Demon Lord looked up at the golden boy in the sky. For the first time in over a century, All For One felt the icy grip of his own mortality. This wasn't All Might. All Might was a man with a powerful Quirk. The boy floating above him was a god of destruction incarnate.
Ha... Izuku’s cupped hands began to tremble under the sheer weight of the energy he was holding. The golden sphere was now pulsating, struggling to contain itself. The air around him was distorting, bending the light, making him look like a mirage in a desert.
All For One didn't hesitate. He activated a combination of Warping, Spatial Distortion, and Mud Warp.
A swirling, black vortex of viscous liquid violently tore open the air beneath his feet.
Me...
Izuku’s teal eyes locked onto the black portal. He saw the villain trying to escape.
The final lock in Izuku’s mind broke. The rage, entirely uncontained, flooded his physical form.
He thrust his cupped hands forward.
"HA!"
It wasn't a word. It was a roar. A primal, earth-shattering scream of pure, unadulterated power that tore his vocal cords to ribbons.
The golden sphere detonated.
A beam of condensed, blazing golden energy, fifty feet wide, erupted from Izuku’s hands. It didn't travel through the air; it instantly deleted the space between Izuku and the ground.
All For One threw himself downward into the mud warp. The portal rapidly closed around him, sucking his torso and legs into the void of spatial distortion.
But he wasn't fast enough.
The edge of the golden beam clipped the warp gate just as it closed. It caught the upper left quadrant of Shigaraki’s body—his left arm, his left shoulder, and a portion of his skull.
There was no explosion. There was no fire.
The matter was simply erased. Eradicated at a sub-atomic level.
The beam struck the ground where Shigaraki had been a microsecond before. The earth did not crack. It liquefied, vaporized, and was pushed downward with such apocalyptic force that the beam drilled straight through the bedrock, plunging hundreds of feet into the earth's crust.
The recoil of the blast pushed Izuku backward in the sky, and the beam angled upward.
The golden pillar of destruction tore through the ruins of Jaku City, carving a perfectly smooth canyon through the earth, instantly vaporizing whatever buildings, rubble, and metal lay in its path. It hit the edge of the city and angled up into the sky.
Todoroki threw himself over Bakugo’s body, erecting a massive glacier of ice to shield them from the ambient heat as the beam passed a mile to their left. The ice instantly melted into steam.
The beam shot into the atmosphere, piercing the dark, swirling hurricane clouds. It tore a hole in the sky. The clouds were violently pushed outward, clearing the atmosphere for hundreds of miles. The beam continued upward, a brilliant, terrifying streak of gold that vanished into the cold vacuum of space.
And then... silence.
The beam ceased.
The roaring wind died. The apocalyptic earthquake settled.
In the sky, Izuku Midoriya floated alone.
The sky above Jaku City was now perfectly clear. The sun, previously hidden by the ash and smoke of the war, shone down upon the ruined city.
Izuku lowered his arms. The golden exoskeleton of energy around his shattered limbs flickered.
He looked down at the massive, glowing canyon he had carved into the earth. The bedrock was molten, bubbling with intense heat. But the body was gone. Shigaraki was gone. Whether he had been vaporized or had escaped, the target of Izuku’s bottomless rage was no longer there.
There was no enemy left to fight.
Without a target, the rage had nowhere to go. It hit the walls of his consciousness and rebounded, turning inward. The realization of what he had just done, the sheer, ungodly magnitude of the violence he had committed, crashed into his mind like a physical blow.
He had lost control. He had tried to obliterate a city just to kill one man.
And Kacchan was still dead.
Izuku threw his head back. He didn't fire an energy blast. He just screamed. It was a horrific, gut-wrenching sound, the sound of a boy whose soul had been torn to pieces.
As he screamed, the golden Ki finally gave out. The biological energy reserves of his mutating cells hit absolute zero.
The golden fire sputtered, like a candle caught in a draft, and then extinguished completely.
The luminescent yellow color washed out of his hair, returning to its messy, dark green state. The teal voids of his eyes snapped back to a dull, tear-filled emerald.
And then, the physical toll came due.
Without the bio-electric exoskeleton to hold him together, the damage of One For All at 100% and the catastrophic drain of the Super Saiyan transformation hit his nervous system simultaneously.
His ruined arms snapped back into their shattered, useless positions with sickening crunches. His muscles tore from the bone. Blood erupted from the pores of his arms, his legs, and his face, dying his torn hero suit a deep, wet crimson.
Izuku’s eyes rolled back in his head. The Quirk Float deactivated.
He plummeted from the sky, a broken, bleeding ragdoll, falling toward the molten ruin of the earth he had just destroyed.
"MIDORIYA!"
Iida didn't wait. He didn't care that his engines were melted. He didn't care that his legs felt like they were going to snap. He forced his engines to fire one last time, blasting off the ridge, intercepting Izuku mid-air, and tackling him onto a softer slope of ash and debris.
They tumbled, coming to a halt at the edge of the glassed canyon.
Todoroki rushed over, leaving Bakugo for a moment, terrified of what he would find.
Iida sat up, cradling Izuku’s mangled body in his arms. The green-haired boy was completely unresponsive. He was breathing, but barely—shallow, ragged gasps that sounded like a death rattle. His body was burning up, a severe fever induced by the cellular mutation and catastrophic trauma.
Todoroki fell to his knees beside them, looking at his friend. Midoriya looked so small. Just a fragile, broken boy.
Todoroki looked up at the perfectly clear, blue sky, and then down at the apocalyptic, smoking canyon carved into the earth. The Golden Avenger was gone.
Consciousness did not return to Izuku Midoriya all at once. It arrived in fractured, agonizing fragments, piecing itself together like a shattered pane of glass trying to remember its original shape.
First came the sound. A steady, rhythmic, mechanical sound. Beep. Hiss. Click. It was the clinical symphony of a hospital room, a sterile lullaby that Izuku had heard far too many times in his short life.
Then came the smell. The sharp, abrasive scent of rubbing alcohol, iodine, and bleach, barely masking the underlying, metallic tang of his own blood.
Finally, the pain.
It was not the sharp, burning pain of a freshly broken bone, nor was it the localized, throbbing ache of a torn muscle. This pain was absolute. It was molecular. It felt as though every single cell in his body had been set on fire, extinguished with acid, and then forcefully sewn back together with rusted wire. His skin felt too tight, his bones felt like lead, and his lungs burned with every shallow breath the ventilator forced into them.
Izuku tried to open his eyes, but his eyelids felt like they were made of stone. When he finally managed to pry them apart, his vision was flooded with a blinding, aggressive white light.
Gold.
His mind violently supplied a memory. The white light of the hospital ceiling fluorescent bulbs morphed into the blinding, apocalyptic golden pillar that had erupted from his own body. He remembered the roaring wind. He remembered the floating rocks. He remembered the cold, hollow void that had swallowed his heart when he looked into Tomura Shigaraki’s eyes.
And then, he remembered why the void had opened.
Kacchan.
The memory hit him like a physical blow to the chest. The three black tendrils. The shower of blood. The lifeless drop of his childhood friend's body onto the cold concrete.
Izuku’s heart monitor spiked, the steady beep-beep-beep suddenly transforming into a rapid, panicked trill. His body convulsed against the hospital bed, his heavy, cast-wrapped arms twitching as he desperately tried to sit up, to run, to go back to the battlefield and fix it.
"Midoriya, my boy! Please, stay still! You're going to tear your sutures!"
A heavy, warm, incredibly gentle hand pressed down on Izuku’s uninjured right shoulder.
Izuku’s hyperventilation hitched as his eyes darted to the side, slowly dragging the sterile room into focus. Sitting in a plastic chair beside his bed was Toshinori Yagi.
All Might looked terrible. The former Number One Hero had always looked frail in his true form, but now, he looked as though he had aged a decade in the span of a few days. His sunken eyes were heavily bag-rimmed, his cheeks were hollow, and his usually neat blonde hair was disheveled. He was wearing an oversized, wrinkled trench coat, and his hands, trembling slightly, were resting on Izuku’s blanket.
"All... All Might..." Izuku’s voice was a horrifying rasp, his throat shredded from the sonic roar he had unleashed when he fired the final blast. "Kacchan... he..."
"Shhh. Breathe, Izuku. Just breathe," Toshinori said, his voice thick with unshed tears. He squeezed Izuku’s shoulder gently. "He is alive."
Izuku froze. The frantic beating of his heart suspended in his chest. "W... what?"
Toshinori offered a weak, watery smile, though his eyes carried a heavy shadow of trauma. He slowly pointed a long, bony finger toward the other side of the room.
Izuku turned his head. The movement sent a spike of white-hot agony shooting up his cervical spine, but he forced his eyes to track across the room.
Separated by a drawn privacy curtain that had been pulled halfway back, there was another bed. Lying in it was Katsuki Bakugo.
The blonde boy was hooked up to a terrifying array of machines. A thick breathing tube was taped to his mouth. His entire torso was wrapped in thick, white bandages that were already beginning to show faint, yellowing stains of antiseptic and plasma. There were drainage tubes snaking out from his side, collecting dark fluids into plastic reservoirs near the floor. He was pale, incredibly still, and looked closer to a corpse than a living teenager.
But his chest was rising. Slowly, mechanically, but it was rising.
"Young Todoroki used his ice to flash-freeze young Bakugo’s wounds on the battlefield," Toshinori explained quietly, his voice filled with a profound, reverent awe for the students. "He stopped the internal bleeding just long enough for the medics to arrive after... after you cleared the sky. It was a miracle of timing. The surgeons spent fourteen hours reconstructing his lung and repairing his stomach. He’s in a medically induced coma, but he is stable. He is going to live."
A ragged, wet sob tore its way out of Izuku’s throat.
The void in his chest, the cold, unfeeling emptiness that had consumed him during the transformation, finally shattered. The sheer relief washed over him like a tidal wave, breaking the dam of his emotions. Tears, hot and heavy, spilled over his bruised cheeks, soaking into the pristine white pillowcase.
"He's alive..." Izuku wept, the sound pathetic and broken. "He's alive..."
Toshinori bowed his head, resting his forehead against the edge of Izuku’s mattress, his own shoulders shaking as he wept alongside his successor. For minutes, the only sound in the room was the steady beeping of the monitors and the quiet, exhausted crying of the two heroes.
It was hours later when the reality of Izuku’s own condition was finally addressed.
Izuku had fallen into a brief, exhausted sleep, only to be awakened by the sound of the room’s heavy wooden door clicking shut.
Standing at the foot of his bed, alongside All Might, was a man Izuku didn't recognize. He was tall, dressed in a crisp white lab coat over a tailored suit, with graying temples and thick, square-rimmed glasses. He held a sleek, digital tablet in his hands, though he wasn't looking at it. He was staring at Izuku with an expression that bordered on scientific terror.
"Midoriya, this is Dr. Arisawa," Toshinori introduced softly. "He is the chief geneticist and Quirk biologist here at Central Hospital. He... well, he has been overseeing your unique case."
"It is an honor to meet you, Midoriya," Dr. Arisawa said. His voice was clinical, precise, but underlined with a nervous tremor. He walked to the side of the bed, pulling up a holographic projection from his tablet. "How are you feeling?"
"Like... like I fell off a building," Izuku rasped, his voice slightly better after drinking some water, though still terribly hoarse. "My arms... they feel different. They hurt, but... it's a different kind of hurt."
Dr. Arisawa exchanged a heavy look with Toshinori before turning back to the young hero. "Midoriya, I have been practicing medicine for thirty years. I have studied the Quirk Singularity Theory. I have seen bodies modified by Doctor Garaki. But what I am looking at in your medical charts... it defies everything we know about human biology."
Izuku’s stomach dropped. Did I lose it? Did I burn out One For All? "What... what's wrong with me?"
Arisawa enlarged the hologram. It displayed a complex 3D model of Izuku’s skeletal and muscular system, specifically focusing on his arms and chest.
"When you were brought in, your arms were completely shattered. The ulna, radius, and humerus in both arms were fragmented into dozens of pieces. The muscular tearing was catastrophic," Arisawa began, tracing a finger over the red-highlighted areas of the hologram. "By all medical precedents, you should be permanently paralyzed from the shoulders down. In fact, the sheer kinetic backlash of whatever power you used should have liquefied your internal organs."
The doctor zoomed in on the cellular level of the projection.
"But they didn't. When we ran your bloodwork and took cellular biopsies, we found something impossible. Your cells were... emitting a frequency. A massive, bio-electric energy field."
"My Quirk..." Izuku started, intending to vaguely reference One For All.
"No," Arisawa interrupted firmly. "This is not a Quirk Factor. A Quirk is a biological function, an appendage, a mutation in the genetic code located in the plus-alpha joint. Quirks obey the laws of physics, even if they bend them. They require fuel, they produce exhaustion, and they are localized to specific genes."
Arisawa swiped to a different screen, showing a live feed of Izuku’s DNA helix.
"What you generated on that battlefield was not a Quirk. It was an ambient, cellular radiation. Every single cell in your body, from your bone marrow to your hair follicles, was simultaneously producing an unknown, highly volatile bio-energy. It acted as a physical substance."
The doctor pointed to Izuku’s bandaged arms. "Witnesses—specifically Shoto Todoroki—reported seeing a 'golden light' acting as a brace around your limbs. Midoriya, that light wasn't just visual. The energy you produced essentially created a bio-electric exoskeleton. It forcibly held your shattered bones in place and shielded your internal organs from the concussive force of your own movements."
Izuku stared at his heavily casted hands. The golden fire... it was holding me together?
"The problem, Midoriya, is the cost," Arisawa said, his tone growing grave. "The human body is a machine. To generate that much raw energy, your cells had to consume an unimaginable amount of calories, oxygen, and... life force. You didn't just burn fat or muscle. You were burning your own cellular telomeres. You were aging your cells, pushing your DNA into an accelerated, violent mutation just to survive the power output."
Toshinori leaned forward, his hands clasped tightly together. "Doctor... what are the long-term effects?"
"We don't know," Arisawa admitted, looking genuinely defeated. "Right now, his cells have stabilized. The mutation has gone dormant. His hair pigment returned to normal, and his irises reverted from teal back to green. But his genetic code has been altered. The 'pathway' to that golden state has been violently carved into his DNA."
The doctor looked directly into Izuku’s eyes, his expression stern. "Midoriya, I must be absolutely clear with you. Your body survived this once because it was acting on an extreme, primal survival instinct triggered by profound psychological trauma. But if you tap into that bio-electric energy again—if you force your cells to mutate and generate that golden state without understanding how to control it—you will not break your bones. You will disintegrate your own cellular structure. You will literally burn yourself to ash from the inside out."
A heavy silence descended upon the room. The sterile hum of the hospital suddenly felt incredibly loud.
"It wasn't a Quirk," Izuku whispered to himself, the words tasting like ash in his mouth. "Then... what was it?"
Dr. Arisawa powered down his tablet. "That is a question for a priest, a philosopher, or perhaps a physicist. But medically? It was a miracle wrapped in a death sentence. Rest, Midoriya. You have a very long physical therapy road ahead of you."
With a polite bow, the doctor exited the room, leaving Toshinori and Izuku alone with the crushing weight of the diagnosis.
"My boy..." Toshinori began, his voice wavering.
"All Might," Izuku interrupted, his voice hollow. He stared blankly at the ceiling. "I wanted to kill him."
Toshinori stopped.
"When I thought Kacchan was dead... I didn't want to capture Shigaraki. I didn't want to save him. I didn't even want to defeat him," Izuku confessed, a tear slipping sideways out of his eye and trailing into his messy hair. "I wanted to erase him. I gathered enough energy to wipe that entire section of the city off the map, and I didn't care who got caught in it. I didn't feel anything. I wasn't a hero."
Toshinori moved his chair closer, reaching out to gently grasp Izuku’s bandaged hand. "You were grieving, Izuku. You were experiencing a pain that no child should ever have to bear. The power you hold... it is tied to your heart. When your heart broke, the power broke with it."
"But what if it happens again?" Izuku asked, his voice trembling with genuine fear. He remembered the cold, intoxicating absolute power of the golden state. The feeling of being completely untouchable. "What if I can't be the Symbol of Peace because I'm a monster?"
"You are not a monster," Toshinori said firmly, squeezing the boy's hand. "You are Izuku Midoriya. You are the Ninth Wielder of One For All. And we will figure this out. Together."
Toshinori stayed by the bedside until the heavy doses of painkillers and exhaustion finally pulled Izuku under. The boy’s eyes fluttered shut, his breathing evening out as the medical machines hummed their steady rhythm.
But Izuku did not find a peaceful sleep.
He was falling.
The transition was not the gentle drift into the dreamscape that Izuku was used to. It felt like being violently yanked backward through a dark tunnel.
When his feet finally touched solid ground, a cloud of ethereal dust kicked up around his red shoes. Izuku blinked, looking around at the familiar, boundless void of the One For All vestige realm.
But it wasn't the same.
The sky of the mental landscape, usually a swirling nebula of vibrant, heroic colors representing the past users, was muted. Dark, bruised clouds of deep purple and black rolled ominously overhead.
And in the center of the realm, the core—the blazing sun that represented the stockpiled power of One For All—was altered. It was no longer a sphere of pure, warm white light. It was crackling. Veins of aggressive, brilliant gold were wrapped around the core like chains, pulsating with a rhythmic, heavy heartbeat.
Thump. Thump.
"Ninth."
Izuku turned. Standing a few yards away, looking incredibly weary, were the vestiges of the past users. Daigoro Banjo (the Fifth) was rubbing the back of his neck, looking unusually subdued. Nana Shimura (the Seventh) offered a sad, comforting smile. En (the Sixth) remained shrouded in his high collar, watching Izuku intently.
But it was Yoichi Shigaraki, the First User, who stepped forward.
Yoichi’s frail, white-haired appearance seemed even more ghostly than usual. His green eyes were filled with a complex mixture of awe, sorrow, and deep concern.
"First..." Izuku breathed, looking down at his own hands. In the vestige realm, his body was whole. No casts, no bandages. Just his torn hero costume. "What happened to the realm? What happened to me?"
"You broke the ceiling," Yoichi said softly. He walked toward Izuku, his bare feet making no sound on the cloudy floor. He gestured toward the golden-veined core. "You pushed One For All past its intended design, Izuku. You forced a singularity, but not the one my brother predicted."
Nana Shimura floated forward, her cape billowing gently. "We felt it, Izuku. We felt your grief. It was like a black hole opened up inside the Quirk. We tried to reach you, to pull you back, but the energy you were generating... it locked us out. It burned us just to get near it."
"The doctor said it wasn't a Quirk," Izuku said, looking between Yoichi and Nana. "He said it was... life force. A bio-electric mutation. Did one of you have a hidden power? Like the Blackwhip or Float?"
"No," Yoichi shook his head. He placed a gentle, phantom hand on Izuku’s shoulder. "This power did not come from us, Izuku. It came entirely from you."
Izuku frowned, confused. "But I was Quirkless."
"Exactly," Yoichi said, his eyes gleaming with a profound realization. "You must understand what One For All truly is, Izuku. It is a stockpiling Quirk. For eight generations, it stockpiled physical strength, speed, and the specific genetic Quirks of its wielders. But its core function is simply to stockpile power."
Yoichi turned, gesturing to the golden chains wrapping the core.
"Before the glowing baby was born in Qing-Qing City, before humanity began to mutate and develop Quirks, human genetics were on a different evolutionary path. There are ancient myths, martial arts legends, and forgotten philosophies that spoke of an internal energy. Ki. Chi. Life force. It was the biological potential of the human cellular structure to generate and weaponize its own internal energy."
Daigoro Banjo stepped up, crossing his thick arms. "When Quirks manifested, human evolution took a hard left turn. The body focused all its genetic potential into developing these unique, localized biological weapons—Quirks. The ancient, dormant genetic code that could produce Ki was buried, deemed obsolete by evolution. It was pushed down to the very bottom of the human DNA sequence."
"Until you," Yoichi concluded.
Izuku’s eyes widened as the pieces began to click together. "Because I didn't have a Quirk..."
"Yes," Yoichi nodded. "Because you were Quirkless, your body was a blank canvas. When you faced a moment of absolute, world-ending despair—the perceived death of Katsuki Bakugo—your brain sent a catastrophic distress signal to your body. You needed more power to save him, but One For All was already at one hundred percent. You had maxed out the Quirk."
Nana smiled sadly. "So, One For All did what it does best. It dug deeper. It bypassed your Quirk Factor, reached down into the deepest, most ancient layers of your DNA, found that dormant, forgotten human potential for Ki... and it stockpiled it."
"It stockpiled millions of years of human evolution in a fraction of a second," Yoichi explained, awe coloring his tone. "It forced your cells to mutate backward to access the Ki, and then supercharged it forward with the infinite engine of One For All. You became something entirely new, Izuku. You became a Golden god."
Izuku looked at his hands, remembering the absolute lack of mercy he had felt. The desire to erase.
"I didn't feel like a god," Izuku whispered, his voice shaking. "I felt cold. I felt like I was watching someone else pilot my body. I was going to murder him. I didn't care about saving anyone anymore. I just wanted to destroy."
Yoichi’s expression hardened, becoming deeply serious. "That is the danger of the state you achieved. The catalyst for this evolution was not your heroic spirit. It was not your desire to save. The key that unlocked the door to that golden power was pure, unadulterated wrath."
Yoichi grabbed both of Izuku’s shoulders, forcing the boy to look him in the eye.
"The energy you generated is wild, primal, and fueled entirely by your darkest, most violent emotions. When you transformed, the rage acted as a dam, blocking out your humanity, your compassion, and us. If you tap into that power again using anger as the trigger, it will consume you entirely. You will lose your mind, and as your doctor said, your body will eventually burn to ash."
"Then I'll never use it again," Izuku said instantly, desperation edging his voice. "I'll stick to regular One For All. I'll master the Quirks. I'll—"
"You don't have a choice, kid," Banjo interrupted, his voice gruff but sympathetic. "You carved the canyon. My brother’s vessel survived. All For One felt that power. He knows you can kill him now. He will not stop until he finds a way to counter it, or he will push you until you break again."
"The door is open, Izuku," Yoichi said softly, releasing him. "Your DNA has been permanently altered. The golden power is a part of you now, just as much as One For All is. You cannot run from it. If you wish to survive the coming war, you must do the impossible."
Izuku swallowed hard, the magnitude of his destiny crushing down on him. "What do I have to do?"
"You must tame the beast," Nana said, her eyes fierce with maternal determination. "You have to find a way to unlock that golden state, to wield that infinite power, without relying on the wrath that created it. You must conquer the golden fire with a heart of tranquility."
The vestige realm began to hum, the edges of the dark clouds blurring as Izuku’s consciousness was pulled back toward the waking world.
"Master the golden light, Ninth," Yoichi’s voice echoed as the darkness consumed Izuku. "Or it will master you."
Izuku woke up with a gasp, his heart pounding against his ribs.
The hospital room was dark. The harsh fluorescent lights had been turned off, replaced by the soft, ambient glow of the city lights filtering through the window blinds. A glance at the digital clock on the wall told him it was 3:00 AM.
Toshinori was gone, likely ordered by the nurses to go home and get some actual rest.
The room was silent, save for the rhythmic, mechanical breathing of the ventilator on the other side of the privacy curtain.
Izuku lay still, staring at the ceiling, processing the monumental revelations of the vestige realm. A dormant genetic energy. Life force. Ki. Triggered by rage. I have to master it.
"Hey. Nerd."
The voice was incredibly weak, raspy, and muffled, but it hit Izuku’s ears like a thunderclap.
Izuku’s head snapped to the right, ignoring the flare of pain in his neck.
Through the small gap in the halfway-drawn privacy curtain, he could see the other bed.
Katsuki Bakugo’s eyes were open.
They were half-lidded, heavy with the cocktail of morphine and sedatives pumping through his veins, but the familiar, fierce crimson color was unmistakable in the dim light. The breathing tube had been removed, replaced by a clear oxygen mask over his nose and mouth, allowing him to speak.
"Kacchan!" Izuku gasped, his voice instantly thick with emotion. He tried to push himself up, but his casted arms refused to bear his weight. "You're awake! You're—"
"Shut up," Bakugo croaked, the effort of speaking causing a spasm of pain to cross his pale face. He squeezed his eyes shut for a moment, waiting for the wave of agony to pass, before locking his gaze back onto Izuku. "Keep your damn voice down. 'M head is pounding."
Izuku instantly clamped his mouth shut, tears immediately welling in his eyes. Just hearing Bakugo hurl an insult at him was the most beautiful sound in the world. It meant the world hadn't ended. It meant he hadn't failed completely.
"I... I thought you were dead," Izuku whispered, the tears freely spilling over his cheeks. "When you fell... there was so much blood, Kacchan. I thought I lost you."
Bakugo didn't sneer. He didn't yell. He just lay there, staring at the ceiling for a long moment, the rhythmic hiss of his oxygen mask filling the silence.
"I thought I was dead, too," Bakugo admitted quietly. It was a raw, uncharacteristic moment of vulnerability that shocked Izuku. "When those spikes hit me... it was cold. So damn cold. Then, nothing."
Bakugo slowly turned his head back toward Izuku. The sedatives couldn't entirely mask the sharp, calculating intellect behind his red eyes.
"But I remember waking up," Bakugo said, his voice dropping to a low, intense rasp. "When Icy-Hot hit me with the freeze. I woke up for just a second. I saw the sky."
Izuku’s breath caught in his throat.
"The sky was gone, Deku," Bakugo continued, his eyes piercing through the dim light, pinning Izuku to his bed. "And I saw you."
Izuku looked away, shame burning a hot path up his neck. "Kacchan... I..."
"You were glowing," Bakugo stated, stating it not as a question, but as a cold, undeniable fact. "Gold. You were on fire, but it wasn't fire. And your hair..." Bakugo let out a dry, rattling chuckle that devolved into a painful cough. "Looked like a damn glowing porcupine."
"Dr. Arisawa called it a mutation," Izuku whispered, unable to meet Bakugo’s eyes. "My cells... they reacted to thinking you were dead. They generated a bio-electric energy. They called it Ki. It held my broken arms together."
"I don't give a damn what the nerds call it," Bakugo interrupted, his voice gaining a fraction of its usual bite. "I saw what you did to him."
Izuku flinched as if struck. The memory of ripping Shigaraki’s arm off, of punching a hole through his chest, flashed violently in his mind’s eye.
"I lost control," Izuku admitted, his voice breaking. "I was so angry, Kacchan. It felt like a black hole swallowed everything I was. I didn't want to save him. I didn't want to bring him to justice. I wanted to tear him apart piece by piece. If All For One hadn't warped him away at the last second... I would have vaporized him. And half the city with him."
Izuku finally looked back at his rival, expecting to see horror. Expecting to see disgust. Expecting Bakugo to yell at him for betraying the very ideals of heroism they had both sworn to uphold.
Instead, Bakugo’s crimson eyes were blazing with a familiar, terrifying intensity.
"You looked like a monster," Bakugo said bluntly.
Izuku nodded, tears falling. "I know."
"You didn't look like a hero," Bakugo continued, his voice gaining strength, fighting through the drugs. "You looked like a villain. You looked like you didn't give a damn about anything except killing that bastard."
"I'm sorry," Izuku choked out. "I'm so sorry, Kacchan. I'll never use it again. I swear. I'll—"
"Don't you dare," Bakugo snarled.
Izuku stopped, blinking in shock. "What?"
Bakugo pushed himself up on his right elbow, ignoring the warning beep of his heart monitor and the sharp intake of breath as his stitched abdomen pulled tight. He glared fiercely at Izuku through the gap in the curtain.
"Don't you dare apologize, and don't you dare tell me you're going to lock that power away!" Bakugo hissed, his teeth bared in a feral grin. "You think I threw myself in front of those spikes so you could get traumatized and quit?! You think I took a hole in the chest so you could get scared of your own shadow?!"
"But... but the rage—"
"Then figure it out!" Bakugo snapped, his eyes burning with absolute, uncompromising resolve. "You're Izuku Midoriya. You're the damn nerd who takes apart Quirks in his sleep. You're the successor of All Might! If the power is tied to your anger, then you beat the anger! You tame it, you put a leash on it, and you make it yours!"
Bakugo leaned back heavily against his pillows, panting, a thin bead of sweat rolling down his pale forehead. But the fire in his eyes didn't dim.
"You left me in the dust again, Deku," Bakugo said, the rivalry that had defined their entire lives flaring brilliantly to life. "I promised myself I would catch up to you. I promised myself I'd surpass you. And then you go and turn into a glowing, untouchable god."
Bakugo raised a trembling, bandaged hand, pointing a single finger directly at Izuku.
"I am Katsuki Bakugo. I am going to be the Number One Hero. And I refuse to be Number One just because you got scared and nerfed yourself."
The words hit Izuku like a shockwave. It wasn't anger at being saved. It wasn't jealousy of Izuku’s power. It was an absolute, unyielding demand for excellence. It was the purest form of their rivalry. Bakugo was staring at a mountain that had just grown ten times higher, and instead of giving up, he was already lacing up his climbing boots.
"So here's the deal, nerd," Bakugo ordered, his voice brooking absolutely no argument. "You are going to figure out how to use that golden form without turning into a psycho. You are going to master it. Because when I get out of this bed, I am going to figure out how to match it. And if you haven't mastered it by the time I catch up to you... I'll beat your ass myself."
Izuku stared at the blonde boy for a long, silent moment.
The heavy, suffocating dread that had been sitting on Izuku’s chest since he woke up began to fracture. The fear of his own power, the terror of what he had become, was suddenly eclipsed by the blazing, unstoppable will of his oldest friend.
If Kacchan wasn't afraid of the Golden form, then Izuku had no right to be afraid of it either.
Slowly, despite the agonizing pain in his shattered arms and the exhaustion settling into his bones, a small, determined smile broke across Izuku’s bruised face. The tears stopped flowing, replaced by a spark of the old, unbreakable heroic resolve.
"You're on, Kacchan," Izuku whispered, his teal-green eyes shining in the dim light of the hospital room. "I won't run from it. I'll master it. I'll make it a power that saves people."
Bakugo scoffed, turning his head away to look out the window, though a small, satisfied smirk played on his lips beneath the oxygen mask.
"Damn right you will," Bakugo muttered, his eyes drifting shut as the sedatives finally began to pull him back under. "Don't... don't slack off, Deku..."
Within seconds, the rhythmic, mechanical hiss of the oxygen mask was the only sound coming from Bakugo’s side of the room. He was asleep.
Izuku lay back against his pillows. He was broken. His arms were shattered, his body was exhausted, and his DNA had been permanently mutated by an ancient, dormant power that threatened to consume his very soul.
The road ahead was impossible. He had to learn how to control an explosive, world-ending power without using the emotional trigger that unlocked it. He had to tame a beast made of pure wrath.
But as Izuku closed his eyes, he didn't feel the cold void anymore.
He thought of All Might’s warm hand. He thought of the vestiges, watching over him in the realm. He thought of Todoroki and Iida, who had saved Bakugo. And he thought of the fierce, unyielding challenge of his rival.
I have to save people to win, Izuku thought, his breathing slowing as sleep finally approached. And I have to win to save people. I will find a way. I will become the Golden Symbol.
The beep of the heart monitor continued, steady and strong in the dark. The war was far from over, but the first battle—the battle for Izuku Midoriya’s soul—had been won.
Gym Gamma was a cavernous, subterranean marvel of modern hero engineering, a sprawling labyrinth of reinforced concrete, steel girders, and dense polymer mats designed to withstand the catastrophic impacts of the next generation of heroes. Usually, it echoed with the explosive shouts of Class 1-A, the crackle of Quirks, and the sharp, guiding voice of Shota Aizawa.
Today, however, it was eerily, oppressively silent.
The air was heavy, thick with the scent of chalk dust, sterilized bandages, and the sharp, metallic tang of ozone. The massive floodlights overhead cast stark, unforgiving shadows across the central sparring arena, illuminating the five individuals gathered for what was officially classified as a "High-Risk Biological Quirk Assessment."
Izuku Midoriya stood in the dead center of the arena.
He was wearing his standard UA gym uniform, though the sleeves had been carefully rolled up to accommodate the constellation of small, circular bio-metric sensors plastered to his skin. Six weeks had passed since the apocalyptic battle in Jaku City. Thanks to the absolute exhaustion of Recovery Girl’s stamina and the sheer, terrifying resilience of his own mutated cells, his arms had healed. The bones had fused back together, though they were now covered in a sprawling web of jagged, Lichtenberg-figure scars—a permanent physical testament to the golden fire that had held him together.
He took a slow, deep breath, closing his eyes. He could feel the familiar, comforting hum of One For All resting in his core, like a warm, coiled spring. But beneath that, buried deep in his marrow, he could feel the echo of something else. An ancient, dormant ocean of heat.
Ki.
Standing a safe distance away behind a blast-resistant barricade was a tense audience.
Shota Aizawa leaned heavily on a carbon-fiber crutch, his right trouser leg pinned up where his limb used to be. His face was a map of fresh, pink scars, his right eye permanently clouded by the damage he had sustained. Yet, his gaze was as sharp and uncompromising as ever. Beside him stood Toshinori Yagi, wringing his skeletal hands together in a silent, agonizing prayer. Dr. Arisawa sat at a portable console, his eyes darting across three different holographic monitors that were feeding live telemetry from Izuku’s bio-sensors.
And finally, leaning against the concrete wall with his arms crossed over his chest, was Katsuki Bakugo. He wore a fitted black tank top that did nothing to hide the massive, starburst-shaped scars over his heart, abdomen, and left shoulder. He was pale, thinner than he had been a month ago, but his crimson eyes were burning with a terrifying, unyielding intensity, fixed squarely on Izuku.
"Whenever you are ready, Midoriya," Dr. Arisawa’s voice crackled through the gym’s PA system, clinical and detached. "We are monitoring your heart rate, cellular vibration, and neuro-electric output. Begin with standard Quirk activation and attempt to bridge the gap."
"Understood," Izuku called back, his voice echoing in the vast chamber.
He planted his feet shoulder-width apart, bending his knees slightly. He closed his eyes and reached inward.
One For All: Full Cowling. Twenty Percent.
The activation was instantaneous. Brilliant, emerald-green lightning erupted from his skin, accompanied by a sharp, concussive crack of displaced air. The familiar red, vein-like lines illuminated across his body. He felt the rush of strength, the hyper-awareness, the absolute biological superiority that came from wielding the stockpiled power of eight previous generations.
"Heart rate elevating. Quirk Factor active," Dr. Arisawa reported, his fingers flying across his keyboard. "Cellular mutation is holding at zero. You're just using One For All. Push it, Midoriya."
Izuku gritted his teeth. Thirty percent.
The green lightning thickened, the ambient wind in the gym picking up speed, whipping his dark green hair around his face.
Forty-five percent.
The concrete beneath his red shoes began to spiderweb, groaning under the sheer, localized pressure of his physical weight multiplying through the Quirk. Izuku’s muscles strained, the familiar, aching burn of One For All spreading through his limbs.
"Still nothing," Arisawa said, a hint of frustration bleeding into his clinical tone. "Your DNA is remaining completely static. The dormant genetic code that produces the bio-energy is locked. You need to force it open."
Izuku exhaled a sharp breath. Force it open.
He dropped his stance lower, clenching his fists at his sides. He remembered the feeling on the battlefield. The sensation of his cells vibrating, of a fire starting in his chest and consuming his entire being. He tried to replicate the physical action. He tightened every muscle in his body, drawing his hands up toward his chest, and pushed.
"HAAAAAAA!"
Izuku yelled, pouring his physical exertion into the scream. He imagined the golden fire. He visualized the spiky yellow hair. He pushed One For All to its absolute safe limit, trying to use the Quirk as a battering ram to smash down the door to his own DNA.
The green lightning flared blindingly bright. The air pressure in the gym spiked. The mats beneath him tore from their moorings, flying backward.
But there was no gold.
Izuku stopped, gasping for air, the green lightning sputtering out as he dropped his hands to his knees. Sweat dripped from his chin onto the cracked concrete.
"Telemetry shows a massive spike in Quirk energy, but absolutely zero biological anomaly," Dr. Arisawa sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. "Your cells aren't even trying to mutate. Midoriya, whatever switch you flipped in Jaku City, you aren't even coming close to touching it."
"This is pointless," a rough, grating voice echoed across the gym.
Bakugo pushed himself off the wall, walking with a slight, stiff limp toward the barricade. He glared at Izuku through the reinforced glass.
"You look like an idiot, Deku," Bakugo sneered, his voice amplifying the silence of the room. "Standing there yelling and flexing your muscles like some extra in a bad comic book. What are you trying to do, poop your pants?"
"Kacchan, I'm trying," Izuku panted, standing up straight and wiping the sweat from his forehead. "I can feel it. It's in there. It's just... it's like trying to flex a muscle I don't have anymore. The door is closed."
"Of course it's closed, you damn moron," Bakugo snapped. He turned to Aizawa. "Sensei. Let me in there."
Aizawa’s lone eye narrowed, his hand instinctively resting on his capture weapon. "Bakugo. You were discharged from the hospital four days ago. Your internal stitches haven't fully dissolved. You are not cleared for combat training."
"I'm not asking to run a marathon," Bakugo countered, his tone deadly serious. He pointed a scarred finger through the glass at Izuku. "Look at him. He's trying to use logic. He's trying to use physical exertion. But that's not what caused the mutation, was it, doc?"
Dr. Arisawa hesitated, looking at his console. "Medically speaking... the mutation was the result of a catastrophic adrenal response triggered by profound psychological trauma. The body bypassed the Quirk Factor entirely because the brain sent a signal that the Quirk was insufficient for survival. It was an evolution born of absolute, primal desperation."
"Exactly," Bakugo said, turning his fierce gaze back to his teacher. "He needs a catalyst. He needs the emotional trigger. And standing out there flexing isn't going to give him a heart attack."
Toshinori stepped forward, his face pale. "Young Bakugo, if you are suggesting what I think you are suggesting... it is far too dangerous. The First User explicitly warned Izuku about the nature of that power. It is tied to wrath. If he unlocks it through anger again, he will lose control."
"Then you erase it, Mr. Aizawa," Bakugo said, looking directly at the tired, scarred teacher. "You keep your eye on him. The second his hair turns yellow, you blink, you shut down his Quirk, and you cut the engine. But if he doesn't figure out how to open the door, he's never going to learn how to walk through it."
Aizawa stared at Bakugo for a long, heavy moment. He looked at the massive scars on his student's chest—scars earned protecting the boy standing in the center of the room. He looked at Midoriya, who was watching them with wide, anxious eyes.
Aizawa knew the reality of the war they were fighting. Shigaraki was out there. All For One was out there. If Midoriya held the key to an apocalyptic power, they couldn't afford to leave it locked away out of fear. A hero had to master their weapons.
"Arisawa," Aizawa said, his voice a low, gravelly command. "If his cellular temperature exceeds critical limits, you tell me. I will shut him down."
"I strongly advise against this, Shota," Arisawa warned, though his hands were already hovering over the emergency medical protocols. "But... understood."
Aizawa turned his gaze to Toshinori, offering the former Symbol of Peace a grim nod, before hitting the release button on the blast doors.
The heavy steel doors hissed open.
Bakugo stepped through, his boots clicking sharply against the concrete as he walked out into the center of the arena. He stopped ten feet away from Izuku, rolling his shoulders, wincing slightly as the scarred tissue stretched.
"Kacchan, you shouldn't be doing this," Izuku said, his voice tight with concern. "If I lose control before Mr. Aizawa can erase it... I could kill you."
"You couldn't kill a fly right now, Deku," Bakugo spat, raising his hands. He didn't ignite his explosions—his body couldn't handle the recoil yet—but he settled into his perfectly balanced, aggressive martial arts stance. "Stop whining and put your guard up."
Izuku hesitated, but the look in Bakugo’s eyes left no room for argument. Izuku brought his arms up, settling into a defensive stance, dialing One For All down to a manageable five percent.
"Don't hold back," Bakugo ordered.
Bakugo lunged.
Even without his Quirk, Bakugo’s combat instincts were terrifying. He closed the distance in a heartbeat, feinting a right hook before driving a vicious left elbow toward Izuku’s face. Izuku blocked it with his forearm, the impact jarring his bones. Bakugo didn't stop. He unleashed a blistering barrage of strikes—punches, knees, sweeping kicks—forcing Izuku entirely on the defensive.
Izuku deflected, parried, and dodged. He wasn't trying to fight back; he was just trying to mitigate the damage to his recovering friend.
"Is this it?!" Bakugo yelled, his fist glancing off Izuku’s cheek, drawing a thin line of blood. "Is this the great successor?! You're moving like a damn turtle!"
"Kacchan, stop! You're going to tear your stitches!" Izuku pleaded, dodging a spinning heel kick that whistled inches from his nose.
"Stop?" Bakugo laughed, a harsh, grating sound. He stepped inside Izuku’s guard, grabbed him by the collar of his gym shirt, and violently threw him to the mat. "The villains aren't going to stop! You think Shigaraki is going to care about your stitches?!"
Izuku hit the ground hard, rolling backward and springing to his feet.
"You think this is a game?!" Bakugo roared, stalking forward. He wasn't just throwing physical punches anymore. He was preparing the psychological blade.
"Listen to me, Deku," Bakugo said, his voice dropping into a vicious, mocking sneer. "You think you saved everyone? You didn't save anyone. Look at Aizawa! Look at his leg! He's a cripple because you weren't fast enough!"
Izuku flinched. The words hit exactly where they were intended, striking the deepest, rawest nerves of his survivor’s guilt.
"Look at Gran Torino!" Bakugo continued, throwing a brutal right cross that Izuku barely deflected. "The old man is sucking meals through a straw in a hospital bed because you couldn't keep the monster in the air! You failed him!"
"Stop it," Izuku whispered, his breathing growing ragged.
"And what about me, huh?!" Bakugo yelled, pointing a thumb at the massive scars on his own chest. "You think I wanted to take those spikes? You think I wanted to die for a worthless, crying little Quirkless loser who can't even fight his own battles?!"
Thump.
The heart monitor on Dr. Arisawa’s console let out an unnatural, heavy skip.
In the vestige realm, the dark clouds instantly materialized. The ambient temperature in the void spiked, and the core began to rapidly pulse, the golden veins tightening like a vice.
"That's right, Deku," Bakugo pushed, his eyes wild, ignoring the tearing pain in his own abdomen as he pressed the assault. "You're pathetic. You have the greatest power in the world, and you're too scared to use it. When Shigaraki comes back, he's going to find you. He's going to walk right past you."
Bakugo stepped forward, leaning in close, his voice a venomous whisper that carried perfectly to Izuku’s ears.
"He's going to walk right past you, and he's going to turn your mother to dust."
Izuku’s pupils constricted to pinpricks.
Thump. Thump.
"And after he dusts your mom," Bakugo continued mercilessly, twisting the knife into Izuku’s soul, "He's going to find All Might. He's going to rip the old man's head off, and he's going to make you watch."
Snap.
It was not a physical sound. It was the metaphysical sound of a dam breaking under infinite pressure.
In the real world, the air inside Gym Gamma violently compressed. A shockwave of pure, invisible force erupted from Izuku’s body, hitting Bakugo like a physical wall and sending the blonde boy skidding backward across the concrete, his boots smoking against the floor.
"Heart rate is off the charts!" Dr. Arisawa screamed, his fingers a blur over the console. "Cellular temperature is spiking! DNA sequencing is violently mutating! He's doing it!"
Izuku stood frozen in the center of the arena. His head was bowed, his dark green hair shadowing his eyes. The green lightning of One For All vanished completely, sucked back into his pores.
For a terrifying second, there was absolute silence.
Then, the concrete beneath Izuku’s feet shattered.
It didn't just crack; it pulverized, turning to a fine gray powder that instantly began to defy gravity, floating upward toward the ceiling. The heavy, suffocating pressure of Ki flooded the gym. The floodlights overhead flickered violently, the glass bulbs groaning under the shift in atmospheric density.
A low, guttural growl, sounding like two tectonic plates grinding together, ripped from Izuku’s throat.
"Midoriya!" Aizawa shouted, stepping up to the glass, his hand gripping the barricade, his lone eye wide open, ready to activate Erasure. "Control it!"
A blinding flash of golden light eradicated the shadows in the room.
The aura erupted from Izuku’s body like a volcanic geyser. The sheer force of the energy blast shattered the reinforced glass of the barricade, forcing Aizawa, Toshinori, and Arisawa to shield their faces.
In the center of the golden storm, Izuku’s head snapped up.
His hair was spiky, luminescent yellow. But the true horror lay in his eyes. The warm, compassionate emerald was gone, replaced by the terrifying, cold teal voids. There was no hesitation. There was no mercy. There was only a bottomless, apocalyptic wrath.
"There he is," Bakugo breathed, wiping a streak of blood from his lip, his eyes wide with a mixture of absolute awe and genuine, primal terror.
The Golden Deku didn't speak. He didn't monologue.
He vanished.
Bakugo didn't even see him move. One microsecond the golden figure was fifty feet away; the next, the ambient heat of a dying star was practically burning the eyelashes off Bakugo’s face.
A golden fist, moving faster than the speed of sound, buried itself into Bakugo’s gut.
The impact was utterly devastating. Bakugo’s eyes bulged from his skull, all the oxygen violently violently forced from his lungs. He felt his freshly healed ribs crack under the sheer, unmitigated kinetic force. The blow lifted him off the ground, paralyzing his diaphragm, blinding him with white-hot agony.
But Izuku wasn't done.
As Bakugo hovered in the air from the force of the punch, the Golden monster grabbed Bakugo by the throat. Izuku lifted the blonde boy high into the air, his teal eyes boring into Bakugo’s terrified crimson ones.
The grip was a vice of steel. Bakugo clawed at the glowing, golden exoskeleton surrounding Izuku’s arm, but his fingers just burned against the condensed Ki. His legs kicked weakly in the air, his face turning a mottled purple as his windpipe was slowly, inexorably crushed.
In Izuku’s mind, he wasn't looking at Kacchan. The rage had completely blinded his perception. He was looking at Shigaraki. He was looking at the monster who had taken everything from him. And he was going to snap his neck.
"Shota!" Toshinori screamed, his voice breaking in absolute terror. "DO IT!"
Aizawa didn't hesitate. He threw off his goggles, his lone eye flaring blood-red.
ERASURE!
The effect was instantaneous and incredibly violent.
Aizawa’s Quirk locked onto Izuku’s Quirk Factor. While the golden Ki was not a Quirk itself, it was currently being fueled, sustained, and amplified by the infinite engine of One For All. When Aizawa slammed the door shut on One For All, the engine died.
The sudden, catastrophic loss of fuel hit the cellular mutation like a bucket of ice water on a raging grease fire.
The golden aura violently imploded. The luminescent yellow hair dropped, instantly reverting to messy green. The teal eyes widened in shock before snapping back to emerald.
The physical whiplash of the power shutting down instantly was agonizing. Izuku’s cells screamed as they were violently ripped back to their base human state.
Izuku’s grip on Bakugo’s throat vanished. The blonde boy dropped to the concrete, collapsing onto his hands and knees, violently coughing and gasping for air, clutching his bruised throat.
Izuku stumbled backward, clutching his own head. A horrific, blinding migraine split his skull. His stomach heaved, and he dropped to his hands and knees, violently vomiting onto the concrete. His body was trembling so violently he could barely support his own weight.
"He's down! Vitals are stabilizing, but his nervous system is in shock!" Arisawa yelled, grabbing his medical kit and rushing past the shattered barricade.
Aizawa blinked, deactivating Erasure, and limped out into the arena as fast as his crutch would allow, Toshinori right behind him.
Izuku knelt in his own sick, tears streaming down his face, gasping for air. His mind, suddenly clear of the rage, was ruthlessly supplying him with the memory of what he had just done.
He looked up, his vision blurry with tears.
Ten feet away, Bakugo was sitting on his knees, clutching his ribs, his breathing ragged. A dark purple bruise in the shape of Izuku’s fingers was already blooming around his throat.
"Kacchan..." Izuku choked out, his voice barely a whisper, thick with absolute horror and self-loathing. "I... I almost..."
"You almost killed me," Bakugo rasped, coughing up a small amount of blood onto the floor.
Izuku squeezed his eyes shut, curling in on himself, burying his face in his trembling hands. "I'm a monster. You were right. I can't control it. The rage... it just swallowed me. I didn't even know it was you. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."
"Shut up, Deku," Bakugo croaked.
Slowly, agonizingly, Bakugo pushed himself up to his feet. He swayed slightly, his hand resting on his injured ribs, but he forced himself to walk over to where Izuku was kneeling.
Bakugo looked down at the weeping boy. He didn't offer a hand. He didn't offer a hug.
He just smirked.
"You got the door open, idiot," Bakugo said, his voice laced with a strange, brutal pride. "Now you know where the lock is."
Izuku looked up, stunned. "Kacchan... I tried to kill you."
"Yeah, well, I asked for it," Bakugo spat out a glob of blood. He looked over his shoulder at Aizawa. "He's all yours, Sensei. I'm going to Recovery Girl. This nerd broke my ribs again."
Without another word, Bakugo limped out of the arena, leaving Izuku kneeling in the dust, completely shattered.
Toshinori dropped to his knees in the dirt, completely uncaring of his suit, and wrapped his long, thin arms around Izuku, pulling the trembling boy into a tight, grounding embrace.
"It's okay, my boy. You're okay. Everyone is safe," Toshinori murmured, burying his face in Izuku’s messy curls as the boy sobbed against his chest.
Aizawa stood over them, his expression grim, but his heart heavy with empathy. He looked at the pulverized concrete, the shattered glass, and the lingering heat in the air.
"He's not a monster, Shota," Toshinori whispered, looking up at his friend, his eyes pleading. "He's just a child carrying the weight of a god."
"I know," Aizawa said softly. "But the villains don't care how old he is. We have to fix his mind, Yagi. Or that power is going to kill us all."
Later that evening, after being cleared by Dr. Arisawa and forced to drink a horrific cocktail of protein and cellular-regenerative supplements, Izuku was confined to his dorm room in Heights Alliance.
He sat in the center of his floor, surrounded by his All Might posters and action figures. The room, usually a source of profound comfort and inspiration, felt suffocating. The smiling faces of his idol staring down at him felt like a harsh judgment.
You're a monster, the silence seemed to whisper.
Izuku looked at his hands. They were trembling slightly. He could still feel the phantom sensation of Kacchan’s throat beneath his fingers. He had looked at his oldest friend, the boy he admired more than anyone in the world, and he had felt nothing but the desire to crush his windpipe.
Anger is the key, the First User had said.
Izuku closed his eyes, leaning his back against his bedframe.
If anger was the key, then the door was a trap. Bakugo was right; he needed an emotional trigger to force his cells to mutate. He needed a surge of adrenaline so massive, so profound, that it overrode his human limitations.
But anger was a poison. It was a wildfire. Once it was lit, it burned indiscriminately. It didn't care about hero or villain, friend or foe. It just wanted to consume.
I can't use it, Izuku thought desperately, pulling his knees to his chest. If I have to be angry to use it, I'll never be able to save anyone. I'll just be another villain.
As his anxiety spiraled, the familiar, pulling sensation of the vestige realm washed over him. The physical world faded away, replaced by the dark, stormy clouds of his inner consciousness.
Izuku opened his eyes. He was back in the void.
The vestiges were standing in a circle around him. Yoichi Shigaraki looked incredibly sad. Daigoro Banjo looked disappointed, but understanding.
"You lost yourself, Ninth," En said softly, his voice muffled by his collar.
"I know," Izuku whispered, hanging his head. "I failed. I can't do it. The anger is too strong. It just... it takes over."
Nana Shimura floated forward, kneeling down in front of Izuku. She reached out, her phantom hand gently lifting his chin so he was forced to look into her warm, maternal eyes.
"Izuku, look at me," Nana commanded gently. "Why were you angry today?"
Izuku blinked, the tears threatening to spill again. "Because Kacchan was saying terrible things. He was talking about Mr. Aizawa, and Gran Torino, and my mom, and All Might."
"And why did that make you angry?" Nana pressed, her voice unyielding but filled with profound kindness.
"Because I care about them!" Izuku cried out, his voice echoing in the void. "Because they mean everything to me! Because the thought of them getting hurt, of them dying, is the most terrifying thing in the world!"
Nana smiled. It was a beautiful, radiant smile that cut through the dark clouds above them.
"Exactly," Nana whispered.
Yoichi stepped forward, joining Nana. "Do you see, Izuku? Anger is a secondary emotion. It is a reaction. You were not angry because you hate the world. You were angry because you love the people in it so fiercely that the thought of losing them is unbearable."
Izuku stared at the First User, his breath hitching.
"The anger unlocked the door because it was the loudest emotion in your heart at the time," Yoichi explained, gesturing to the pulsing core of One For All. "But anger is not the engine. It is merely the spark. The fuel that truly sustains the golden fire... is your desire to protect."
"You're focusing on the wrong side of the coin, kid," Daigoro Banjo chimed in, offering a wide grin. "You're letting the rage drive the car, and you're locked in the trunk. You need to get into the driver's seat."
"How?" Izuku asked, desperation and a fragile new hope blooming in his chest.
"You have to accept the anger," Nana said softly, placing her hand over Izuku’s heart. "Don't fight it. Don't fear it. Acknowledge it. Let the rage at the injustice of the world open the door to your DNA. But the moment the door opens, you cannot let the rage cross the threshold."
Nana leaned in, her eyes shining with the legacy of a true hero.
"When the fire ignites, Izuku, you must look past the anger. You must grab hold of the love that created it. You must fill the void with your compassion. You must hold the ultimate power of destruction... with a heart of absolute tranquility."
A heart of tranquility.
The words resonated through Izuku’s soul like the ringing of a massive bell.
The dark clouds above them in the vestige realm began to fracture. A single beam of pure, warm, golden light broke through the darkness, illuminating Izuku’s face.
The golden Ki wasn't a curse. It wasn't a manifestation of malice. It was the ultimate biological expression of a human being pushed to their absolute limits to save what they loved. The reason it felt like a monster was because Izuku had allowed the fear of loss to dictate his actions, rather than the joy of saving.
Izuku slowly stood up in the vestige realm. He looked at his hands, bathed in the soft, warm golden light breaking through the clouds.
"I have to save people to win," Izuku whispered, repeating the core philosophy he and Bakugo had forged.
"And you have to win to save people," Yoichi finished, smiling proudly.
"I understand," Izuku said, a profound, unshakable calm settling over his mind. The chaotic storm of anxiety, guilt, and terror that had plagued him for weeks suddenly vanished. The water of his mind became perfectly still, reflecting the sky. "I know what I have to do."
The vestige realm faded away, and Izuku opened his eyes in his dorm room.
The room was quiet. The moonlight filtered through his window, casting a silver glow over his All Might posters.
Izuku didn't go to sleep.
He moved to the center of his floor, sitting in a cross-legged, meditative posture. He rested his scarred hands on his knees, palms facing upward. He closed his eyes and slowed his breathing.
He didn't try to activate One For All. He didn't try to force the golden door open.
He simply sat, sinking deep into the quiet architecture of his own mind. He visualized the lock on his DNA. He visualized the golden fire waiting behind it.
He thought of Shigaraki. He thought of the death, the destruction, the absolute horror the villain had wrought. He felt the familiar, hot spike of righteous anger flare in his chest.
He let the anger touch the lock.
He felt the click. He felt the door begin to open. He felt the primal, violent surge of Ki threaten to rush out and consume him.
But this time, Izuku didn't let the floodwaters take him.
He breathed in, and he visualized his mother’s smile. He visualized All Might’s laugh. He visualized Uraraka, Iida, Todoroki, and the fierce, uncompromising eyes of Katsuki Bakugo.
He took the anger, the hot, jagged metal of his rage, and he submerged it in the cool, infinite ocean of his love for his friends. He transmuted the emotion.
Deep within his cells, the chaotic, violent vibration of the mutation began to slow down. The aggressive, burning heat of the Ki cooled, transforming into a warm, comforting thrum.
In the darkness of his dorm room, Izuku’s skin began to glow.
It wasn't the blinding, explosive pillar of light that had shattered Jaku City. It was a soft, radiant, ethereal luminescence. The ambient air in the room didn't grow heavy; it felt lighter, charged with a profound, peaceful energy.
Izuku opened his eyes.
The room was bathed in a beautiful, soft gold.
His hair was not the aggressive, spiky yellow of the berserker state. It remained its natural, messy texture, but the pigment had shifted to a pale, luminous blonde.
And his eyes.
They were not the cold, pupil-less voids of a monster. They were bright, clear, and perfectly focused. The irises were a brilliant, crystalline teal, but they were filled with profound warmth, compassion, and the unshakable resolve of the world's greatest hero.
He raised his hand. The golden aura flickered over his scarred skin like a gentle flame. There was no pain. There was no exhaustion. There was only absolute, perfect harmony between his mind, his body, and the infinite power of his mutated DNA.
Izuku Midoriya smiled, the teal light reflecting in his window.
The beast was tamed. The Super Saiyan was mastered.
And just in time. Because the true war was about to begin.
