What If Deku Mastered the Avatar State Instantly
The smell of ozone and burning synthetic
foliage hung thick in the air of the Unforeseen Simulation Joint. It was
supposed to be a rescue training exercise. It was supposed to be a safe,
controlled environment where the nascent heroes of Class 1-A could learn to
save lives.
Instead, it was a slaughterhouse.
Izuku Midoriya crouched waist-deep in the
tepid water of the shipwreck zone, his breath rattling in his chest like dry
leaves. Beside him, Tsuyu Asui and Minoru Mineta were trembling, their eyes
wide with a primal, suffocating terror. Izuku’s own heart hammered against his
ribs, a frantic, desperate rhythm that seemed to echo the chaotic thudding of
the giant monster tearing their teacher apart in the central plaza.
Eraserhead—Aizawa-sensei—was a man of
formidable skill and iron will, a hero who fought from the shadows and
dismantled villains with calculated efficiency. But against the creature the
pale, hand-covered villain called a 'Nomu,' he was nothing more than a ragdoll.
Smash.
The sound of Aizawa’s face being ground into
the concrete reverberated across the sprawling dome. Blood, stark and terrible,
pooled around the pro-hero's shattered body. His arm was bent at an impossible,
sickening angle, the bone jutting beneath the fabric of his jumpsuit. Yet, even
as the monstrous, bird-brained abomination held him down, Aizawa’s bloodshot
eyes remained open, his Quirk desperately fighting to erase the powers of the
villains closing in on his students.
"You really are so cool,
Eraserhead," Tomura Shigaraki rasped, his voice a dry, scratchy whine that
carried easily over the silent plaza. He scratched furiously at his own neck,
flakes of skin falling away beneath his jagged fingernails. "But you're a
one-trick pony. And against raw, unadulterated power... you're nothing."
Izuku’s knuckles turned white as he gripped
the edge of the water. Think, he commanded himself, his brilliant, analytical
mind racing at a million miles an hour. Think! There has to be a way. All Might
isn't here. Iida is running for backup, but it’ll take too long. Aizawa-sensei
is dying. We have to do something. I have to do something.
But what could he do? He was Quirkless Izuku
Midoriya, who had only weeks ago been gifted the sacred torch of One For All by
the greatest hero in the world. A power so immense, so volatile, that using it
meant shattering his own bones. If he used it now, he would become a liability.
He had sworn not to break himself again.
"Hey, Kurogiri," Shigaraki muttered,
turning his gaze away from the broken teacher. Through the messy fringe of his
pale blue hair, an eye peeked out, locking directly onto the water where Izuku,
Tsuyu, and Mineta were hiding. "If we kill some of his precious kids... do
you think the Symbol of Peace will show up then?"
The air in Izuku’s lungs turned to ice.
Before the thought could even fully process,
Shigaraki moved. He was fast—terrifyingly fast. He crossed the distance from
the central plaza to the edge of the water in a blur of motion, leaping toward
them.
"Tsuyu! Mineta! Move!" Izuku
screamed, his voice cracking with panic.
But fear had paralyzed them. Mineta was
weeping, frozen in place, and Tsuyu, despite her excellent reflexes, was caught
off guard by the sheer, unholy speed of the villain.
Shigaraki’s hand reached out. Five fingers
spread wide. Izuku knew what that hand did. He had seen it turn the heavy metal
doors of the USJ into crumbling dust. He had seen it disintegrate Aizawa’s
elbow. If all five fingers touched Tsuyu’s face...
No.
The word wasn't a thought; it was a
fundamental rejection of reality.
Izuku’s body moved before his brain could
issue the command. It was the same instinct that had driven him to run toward
the Sludge Villain to save Kacchan. The essence of a hero.
He lunged out of the water, throwing himself
between Shigaraki and his classmate. He couldn't dodge. He couldn't pull Tsuyu
away in time. There was only one option. He had to hit Shigaraki before
Shigaraki hit them.
He called upon the stockpiled power of One For
All. He didn't try to regulate it. He didn't try to hold back to save his arm.
There was no time for the Egg Microwave analogy, no time to spread the power
evenly. He needed absolute, overwhelming force, right here, right now.
Red, luminescent veins spider-webbed across
his right arm. The fabric of his gym uniform tore as his muscles violently
expanded, struggling to contain the sheer, explosive energy of a century of
stockpiled power. Sparks of green lightning violently lashed out around him,
whipping the water into a frenzy.
One hundred percent! Izuku roared in his mind,
his fist pulling back. I’m sorry, Aizawa-sensei! I'm sorry, Recovery Girl! I'm
sorry, All Might!
He thrust his fist forward. Shigaraki’s hand
was mere millimeters from Tsuyu’s face, turning slightly to meet Izuku’s
incoming strike. The villain's eyes widened behind the disembodied hand on his
face, realizing the suicidal, devastating power radiating from the boy.
The collision was inevitable. The destruction
of Izuku's right arm was guaranteed.
And then... everything stopped.
Not metaphorically. Not as a trick of
perception due to adrenaline. Reality itself ground to an absolute, unmoving
halt.
Izuku blinked.
The roaring wind generated by his incoming
punch was silenced. The water droplets kicked up from his leap hung suspended
in mid-air, glittering like diamonds under the artificial lights of the USJ
dome. Shigaraki’s face was frozen in an expression of dawning shock, his dry,
cracking fingers a millimeter from the tip of Tsuyu’s nose. Mineta’s tears were
paused halfway down his cheeks.
"What...?" Izuku whispered. His
voice made no sound.
Suddenly, the colors of the USJ inverted,
washing out into stark blacks and whites before dissolving entirely. The ground
vanished beneath his feet, but he didn't fall. He was floating in an endless,
starlit void. The air here smelled of ozone, yes, but also of ancient pine,
burning incense, ocean salt, and rain hitting hot earth. It was a cacophony of
sensations that overwhelmed his panic with a deep, inexplicable calm.
Below him, a massive tree of light
materialized, its roots spreading out into the cosmos, its branches holding
galaxies.
Where am I? Izuku thought, looking down at his
arm. The glowing red veins of One For All were still there, pulsing, but they
no longer hurt. The agonizing pressure of a million pounds of force tearing his
muscles apart was gone, replaced by a warm, thrumming vibration.
"You have ventured deeper than anyone
before you, Ninth."
Izuku whipped his head around. Out of the
cosmic darkness stepped a figure. Then another. And another.
Shadowy silhouettes formed, filled with a
swirling, kaleidoscopic array of colors. He recognized two of them from the
fleeting dream he’d had after the sports festival—a tall, lean man with stark
white hair, and a muscular woman with a cape.
"Yoichi?" Izuku asked, his voice
returning in this strange place. "Nana Shimura?"
The white-haired man, Yoichi Shigaraki, the
first wielder of One For All, smiled gently. "We are here, Izuku. But you
have reached a threshold that even we did not know existed. The power of One
For All has grown beyond a mere stockpiling of physical strength. Over eight
generations, it has stockpiled something far more potent."
"Spiritual energy," a new voice
boomed.
It did not belong to a One For All vestige.
Behind the seven shadowed figures of his
predecessors, a blinding golden light began to form. It split into four
distinct columns, descending from the branches of the cosmic tree. The shadows
of One For All parted, bowing their heads in deep reverence as four new figures
stepped forward.
They were not shadows. They were impossibly
vivid, glowing with a soft, ethereal light.
The first was a towering man with broad
shoulders, wearing ornate red robes and a golden headpiece. His eyes burned
with the intensity of a dying star.
The second was a giant of a woman, clad in
heavy green and gold armor, her face painted in stark white and red makeup,
holding two massive golden fans. She radiated a terrifying, immovable presence,
like a mountain given human form.
The third was a muscular, dark-skinned woman
with short brown hair, wearing blue, fur-lined garments. Her stance was
aggressive, confident, and brimming with boundless energy, a water skin slung
across her hip.
And the fourth... the fourth stepped directly
in front of Izuku. He was a young boy, perhaps a year or two younger than Izuku
himself. He had blue arrow tattoos running down his arms and across his bald
head. He wore simple orange and yellow monk's robes and carried a wooden staff.
His grey eyes were incredibly kind, carrying a weight of sorrow and wisdom that
no child should ever possess.
"Hello, Izuku," the boy said,
smiling warmly. "My name is Aang."
Izuku could only stare, his jaw slack.
"Aang? Who... what are you? Are you Quirks? Are you part of One For
All?"
The dark-skinned woman in blue chuckled,
stepping up beside Aang. "Not quite, kid. You could say One For All is a
part of us. Or rather, a symptom of what we left behind. I'm Korra."
"I am Kyoshi," the tall, armored
woman stated, her voice like grinding stones.
"And I am Roku," the man in red said
solemnly.
"We are the Avatars," Aang
explained, resting a hand on his wooden staff. "Or, we were. Long, long
before your time, Izuku. Thousands of years ago, the world was very different.
Humans did not have Quirks. They had 'Bending'—the ability to manipulate the four
fundamental elements of nature: Water, Earth, Fire, and Air."
Izuku’s encyclopedic mind spun, trying to
categorize this impossibility. "Elements? Like... like elemental Quirks?
Ectoplasm-sensei mentioned that elemental manipulation Quirks were some of the
oldest recorded mutations..."
"They were not mutations, young
one," Roku interrupted gently. "They were spiritual arts, gifted by
the animals of the world and the spirits themselves. But as humanity evolved,
as technology advanced and the world modernized, humanity lost its connection
to the Spirit World. The energy that allowed humans to bend the elements didn't
disappear... it changed. It grew stagnant, turning inward. It mutated into what
you now call Quirks."
"Quirks are... spiritual energy?" Izuku
breathed.
"Exactly," Korra said, crossing her
arms. "And for thousands of years, the Avatar Cycle—the reincarnation of a
single soul tasked with mastering all four elements to bring balance to the
world—went dormant. The spiritual bridge was broken. The world became so
obsessed with individual power, with these 'Quirks,' that the energy required
to awaken the Avatar State was scattered across billions of people."
"Until now," Aang said softly,
gesturing toward the shadowy vestiges of One For All. Yoichi stepped forward,
standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Aang.
"My brother, All For One, sought to hoard
this mutated energy," Yoichi explained, his voice laced with old sorrow.
"He stole it, concentrated it, corrupted it. But One For All was
different. By passing the power willingly from one person to the next,
generation after generation, the power grew. But it didn't just stockpile
physical strength, Izuku. It stockpiled willpower. Hope. The desire to save
others. It stockpiled spirit."
"Over eight generations," Kyoshi
said, her stern gaze piercing right through Izuku, "that power grew dense
enough, pure enough, to breach the cosmic divide. When All Might passed it to
you, it reached the critical mass necessary to reawaken the ancient cycle."
Izuku looked down at his hands, overwhelmed.
"But... why me? I was Quirkless. I was nobody. I'm just a kid trying not
to die while saving my friend."
"That is exactly why," a new,
resonant voice echoed.
It didn't come from a person. The space behind
the Avatars erupted into brilliant, blinding blue and white light. A colossal
spirit, shaped like an intricately patterned kite, ascended from the void. It
hummed with a sound like a singing bowl, vibrating in Izuku’s chest.
"I am Raava," the Spirit of Light
spoke, her voice echoing in the very core of Izuku's soul. "The spirit of
peace and light. I have resided within the Avatar since the beginning of time.
I have been asleep for an age, waiting for a vessel pure enough to hold the
light of the elements once more."
"To master the Avatar State," Aang
explained, looking up at Raava before turning back to Izuku, "an Avatar
usually has to undergo intense spiritual training. They must let go of their
earthly tethers, open their chakras, and face their deepest fears and emotional
turmoil. It can take years. Sometimes, a lifetime."
"But you, Izuku Midoriya," Korra
smiled, a fierce, proud grin, "are kind of a cheat code."
"A cheat code?"
"The vestiges of One For All have already
acted as a bridge," Roku said. "Eight souls, eight lives dedicated to
sacrifice and saving others, have forcefully opened the gates of your spirit.
The physical toll One For All takes on you is immense, yes, but spiritually?
You are a fortress of light."
"When you leaped toward that villain,"
Kyoshi added, her fan pointing at Izuku's chest, "you did not think of
yourself. You did not think of glory, or survival, or fear. You accepted your
own destruction entirely to save a single life. Absolute, unconditional
selflessness. In that microsecond, you unlocked the cosmic chakra."
Raava’s massive form drifted closer, her light
washing over Izuku, bathing him in an indescribable warmth. The agonizing
pressure in his arm vanished completely, replaced by an infinite, boundless
well of energy that felt like the ocean, the earth, the sun, and the sky all
swirling inside his veins.
"Izuku Midoriya," Raava resonated.
"The world of Quirks has fallen out of balance. Men like All For One and
the darkness he breeds have corrupted the energy of this world for too long.
You are no longer just the Ninth wielder of One For All."
Aang stepped forward, placing a hand over the
glowing red veins on Izuku's arm. Korra placed her hand over Aang’s. Then
Kyoshi. Then Roku.
"You are the bridge," Aang
whispered.
"You are the Avatar," Korra said.
"Bring balance to this world,"
Kyoshi commanded.
"We are with you," Roku finished.
The eight shadows of One For All stepped
forward, placing their hands on Izuku's shoulders and back, anchoring him,
supporting the immense influx of cosmic power.
Izuku didn't have time to doubt himself. He
didn't have time to mumble, or second-guess, or cry. The sheer weight of
thousands of lifetimes of wisdom, battle experience, and elemental mastery
flooded his mind. He didn't just learn how to bend; he remembered it. He
remembered raising mountains with Kyoshi, he remembered soaring through the
clouds with Aang, he remembered redirecting lightning with Roku, he remembered
bending metal with Korra.
It was all his.
Izuku closed his eyes. He took a breath that
felt like it drew in all the air in the cosmos.
"I accept it," Izuku said softly.
Raava’s light exploded, rushing into Izuku's
chest, merging with the fiery core of One For All.
Time snapped back into existence with a sound
like a cracking whip.
In the USJ, Tomura Shigaraki’s hand continued
its forward trajectory, closing the final millimeter toward Tsuyu Asui’s face.
Izuku’s fist, glowing with the red energy of a 100% Smash, was meant to collide
with the villain’s torso in a suicidal strike.
It never did.
Instead of a deafening, bone-shattering
impact, a sound akin to a massive, ringing gong echoed throughout the dome. It
was a deep, resonant THOOOOOM that rattled the teeth of everyone in the
facility.
Shigaraki froze, his hand violently repelled
backward by an invisible, impenetrable wall of solidified air.
Izuku Midoriya hung suspended in the air. His
fist had uncurled, his hand held flat, palm outward. The red, jagged veins of
One For All that had threatened to tear his arm apart vanished, replaced by a
radiant, blinding white light.
The light poured from Izuku’s eyes, erasing
his irises and pupils in a glow of divine intensity. The freckles on his cheeks
ignited, glowing like a constellation of stars. A physical ring of compressed
air, spinning with hurricane force, materialized around his body, suspending
him above the water.
Tsuyu, Mineta, and Shigaraki were blown
backward by a sudden, omnidirectional gale. Shigaraki tumbled across the
concrete shore, his disembodied hands clattering against the ground.
"What... what is this?!" Shigaraki
shrieked, scrambling backward, scratching frantically at his neck.
"Kurogiri! The Nomu! Kill him! Kill the brat!"
Across the plaza, the Nomu dropped Aizawa’s
mangled body. The mindless beast, programmed only to destroy the strongest
threat, sensed the monumental shift in power. It turned its beak toward the
glowing boy suspended over the shipwreck zone. With a screech that sounded like
tearing metal, the Nomu kicked off the ground, shattering the concrete beneath
its feet as it launched itself at Izuku with the speed of a bullet.
It possessed Shock Absorption. It possessed
Super Regeneration. It possessed physical strength on par with All Might
himself. It was a biological weapon designed to kill a god.
Izuku didn't blink. The wisdom of a thousand
past lives viewed the incoming monstrosity not with fear, but with an absolute,
detached calm. The Avatar State stripped away Izuku’s anxiety, leaving only
pure, focused intent.
He didn't need to throw a punch.
As the Nomu closed the distance, extending a
massive, muscular arm to tear Izuku in half, Izuku simply moved his hands in a
wide, circular motion.
Airbending.
He didn't hit the Nomu with force; he caught
it. The air around the Nomu suddenly became as dense as molasses. Izuku
manipulated the kinetic energy of the beast's own charge, swirling the air
currents around it like a giant, invisible whirlpool. The Nomu’s monstrous
momentum was entirely stripped from it, redirected into the air itself.
With a graceful, fluid pivot of his waist, Izuku
whipped his arms to the side.
The Nomu, weighing several hundred pounds and
moving at supersonic speeds, was effortlessly redirected. It flew sideways,
completely out of control, skipping across the surface of the artificial lake
like a skipped stone before crashing violently into the side of a fake mountain
in the Mountain Zone, burying itself under tons of rubble.
Silence fell over the USJ, broken only by the
howling wind circling Izuku.
Class 1-A, scattered across the facility,
stopped their battles. Bakugo and Kirishima, standing in the Ruins Zone, stared
open-mouthed at the glowing pillar of air in the distance. Todoroki, in the
Landslide Zone, narrowed his eyes, feeling an immense, primal shift in the
temperature and pressure of the dome.
Down in the plaza, Aizawa forced one bloodshot
eye open, his vision swimming. He looked up at his problem child. Midoriya...?
What... what are you doing?
Shigaraki was hyperventilating, his red eyes
wide with madness and terror. "This is wrong! This is a glitch! He’s a
nobody! He’s just a kid! Nomu! Get out of there and crush him!"
The mountain of rubble exploded. The Nomu
shrieked, unharmed due to its Shock Absorption, and bounded back toward the
plaza. It didn't jump this time; it sprinted across the ground, tearing deep
trenches into the earth with every step, preparing to unleash a flurry of
devastating blows.
Izuku floated gently to the ground, the air
sphere dissipating as his boots touched the concrete. His glowing eyes tracked
the Nomu.
Shock absorption. It could take blunt force.
Then we do not use blunt force, Roku’s voice
echoed in Izuku’s mind.
Izuku took a deep breath, dropping into a wide,
grounded stance. He drew his left hand back to his hip, taking a sharp, sharp
inhale. The air around him suddenly grew unbearably hot. The moisture on
Tsuyu’s skin evaporated in an instant. The water of the shipwreck zone began to
steam.
Izuku thrust his fist forward.
Firebending.
It was not a blast of flame like Bakugo’s
explosions. It was not a chaotic spread of fire. It was a hyper-concentrated,
roaring pillar of pure, white-hot plasma.
The fire erupted from Izuku’s knuckles,
expanding into a continuous, devastating beam that spanned twenty feet across.
It roared with the sound of a jet engine, lighting up the entire USJ dome
brighter than the midday sun.
The Nomu ran directly into it.
Shock absorption could handle kinetic impact.
It could not handle a temperature that rivaled the surface of a star.
The beast shrieked in agony as the flesh of
its torso and arms was instantly incinerated. The sheer propulsive force of the
fire caught the Nomu and carried it backward, blasting it off its feet. Izuku
swept his arm upward, and the pillar of fire followed, carrying the screaming
monster into the air.
With a deafening CRACK, the pillar of fire
blasted the Nomu straight through the reinforced glass and steel roof of the
USJ dome, shooting it into the stratosphere like a rocket.
Izuku cut off the flame, exhaling a thin
stream of steam from his lips.
Through the massive, jagged hole in the roof,
sunlight streamed down, illuminating the destruction. The Nomu was gone, hurled
miles away, its regenerative cells likely struggling to keep up with the
catastrophic burn damage.
Izuku wasn't done. He turned his glowing,
divine gaze toward Shigaraki and Kurogiri.
"Kurogiri!" Shigaraki screamed, his
voice cracking, stumbling backward so fast he tripped over his own feet.
"Warp us! Now! The game is bugged! The final boss is broken! Warp us
out!"
Kurogiri, for all his composure, was visibly
panicking. His dark mist expanded rapidly, preparing to swallow Shigaraki and
himself to escape the terrifying entity that had taken over the green-haired
boy.
Do not let them escape, Kyoshi’s unyielding
voice commanded.
Izuku slammed his foot down into the concrete.
Earthbending.
The ground beneath the villains rippled like
water. Before Kurogiri could fully materialize his warp gate, two massive,
rectangular slabs of solid earth shot upward from the floor at a forty-five-degree
angle. They slammed together like a giant, stone vise, crushing Kurogiri’s
misty form between them and snapping shut over his metal neck brace, locking
him in place.
Shigaraki scrambled to his feet, reaching out
to decay the stone.
Izuku stomped again, swiping his arm sideways.
The ground beneath Shigaraki violently shifted, knocking the villain off
balance. Then, ribbons of solid rock peeled off the floor, snaking around
Shigaraki’s wrists and ankles like living serpents, slamming him face-first
into the ground and pinning his hands securely behind his back. The rock
hardened instantly, binding him entirely.
The USJ was secured. The villains were
neutralized.
Izuku stood in the center of the plaza, his
chest heaving slightly. Slowly, the blinding white light in his eyes began to
fade, returning to their natural, vibrant green. The glowing freckles dimmed.
The ethereal wind died down.
He blinked, suddenly feeling the weight of his
own body again. He looked down at his hands. His right arm, which should have
been a mangled mess of shattered bone and torn muscle, was completely unharmed.
He flexed his fingers. They moved perfectly.
He didn't feel exhausted. He didn't feel
broken. He felt... balanced. He felt a deep, profound connection to the earth
beneath his boots, the air moving through his lungs, the latent heat in the
atmosphere, and the water lapping at the shore behind him.
He heard a groan.
"Aizawa-sensei!"
Izuku rushed across the plaza, sliding to his
knees beside his battered teacher. Aizawa was conscious, barely, his eyes wide
and fixed on Izuku in a mixture of awe, horror, and profound confusion.
"Midoriya..." Aizawa coughed, blood
trickling from his lips. "What... what the hell... was that?"
Izuku didn't know how to answer. How could he
explain that he had just channeled the spiritual power of thousands of
generations? How could he explain that Quirks were just a fraction of the
universe's true power, and he had just unlocked all of it?
Before he could attempt an explanation, a
booming voice echoed from the entrance of the USJ.
"FEAR NOT, STUDENTS! BECAUSE I AM
HERE!"
All Might stood at the top of the stairs, his
suit bulging with muscle, a furious scowl on his face. He had ripped his tie
off, ready to unleash holy hell upon the villains who dared attack his
students.
He leaped down into the plaza, expecting a
warzone.
Instead, he landed to find the Nomu completely
missing, a massive, smoldering hole in the roof, Kurogiri locked in a perfect
geometric stone prison, and the terrifying leader of the villains securely
hogtied by solid rock.
And in the center of it all, kneeling beside
Aizawa, was his Quirkless successor, completely unharmed.
All Might blinked, the furious expression
melting off his face, replaced by utter bewilderment. He looked at the stone
prisons. He looked at the hole in the roof. He looked at Izuku.
"Young Midoriya...?" All Might
asked, his booming voice faltering into a confused, normal pitch. "Did...
did you do this?"
Izuku looked up at his idol. He felt the
reassuring presence of Aang, Korra, Kyoshi, and Roku resting quietly in the
back of his mind, alongside the smiling shadow of Yoichi Shigaraki.
"Yes, All Might," Izuku said, his
voice unusually calm, devoid of his usual stutter or anxiety. He stood up,
dusting off his torn gym pants. "The situation is under control. We need
paramedics for Aizawa-sensei and Thirteen."
Across the plaza, Tsuyu and Mineta finally
waded out of the water, staring at Izuku as if he had grown a second head.
"Midoriya..." Mineta whimpered,
pointing a shaking finger at him. "You... you shot fire out of your hands.
And... and flew. And moved the ground."
"Are you... a god, kero?" Tsuyu
asked, her usual deadpan tone entirely missing.
Izuku offered them a gentle, serene smile—a
smile that looked suspiciously like a wizened, ancient monk in a child's body.
"No, Asui. I'm just Izuku." He
looked back at his hands, feeling the thrum of the elements vibrating in his
fingertips. "But I think... I have a lot to learn about One For All."
In the distance, the sirens of police cars and
ambulances began to wail, approaching the USJ. The immediate danger was over.
But as Izuku looked up at the sunlight pouring through the hole he had blasted
in the roof, he knew, with absolute certainty, that his world, and the world of
heroes and villains, would never be the same again.
The Avatar had returned. And he was going to
be a hero.
The ride back from the Unforeseen Simulation
Joint was cloaked in a heavy, suffocating silence, broken only by the low hum
of the police transport’s engine. Outside the reinforced windows, the late
afternoon sun cast long, golden shadows over the city, a stark contrast to the
absolute chaos that had nearly claimed the lives of Class 1-A just hours prior.
Izuku Midoriya sat near the back of the
transport. He was wrapped in a foil emergency blanket, not because he was cold
or in shock, but because the paramedics had insisted. To them, he was still
just a fifteen-year-old boy who had survived a terrorist attack.
But Izuku felt... different. Fundamentally
altered.
He closed his eyes, leaning his head against
the cool metal of the wall. When he inhaled, he didn't just feel the air
filling his lungs; he felt the atmospheric pressure of the vehicle, the
microscopic currents of wind flowing through the air conditioning vents,
swirling around the nervous, sweating police officers. He could feel the latent
moisture in the breath of his classmates, the heavy earth and asphalt rumbling
beneath the tires, and the ambient thermal energy radiating from the engine
block.
It was as if he had been living his entire
life looking through a muddy keyhole, and suddenly, the door had been kicked
wide open. The universe was singing to him in four distinct, harmonious
frequencies.
He didn't just have power. He had awareness.
Deep within his mind, a quiet, reassuring
warmth pulsed. He could sense them—Aang’s gentle curiosity, Korra’s fierce
protectiveness, Kyoshi’s unyielding resolve, Roku’s measured wisdom. And
beneath them all, the steady, rhythmic heartbeat of Raava, the Spirit of Light,
intertwined with the fiery, stockpiled will of the eight One For All vestiges.
It wasn't a cacophony of voices shouting over one another. It was a wellspring
of instinct. A library of muscle memory and cosmic truth that he could access
with a mere thought.
The transport finally ground to a halt outside
the towering gates of U.A. High School. Izuku opened his eyes. The glowing
white light had long faded, returning his irises to their natural emerald
green, but there was a new depth to them now—a stillness that hadn't been there
before.
He stepped off the bus, politely bowing to the
police officers. His classmates gave him a wide berth. Even Uraraka and Iida,
who hurried over to ensure he was okay, looked at him with a mixture of immense
relief and unmistakable apprehension. They had seen what he did. They had seen
him break the laws of physics, command the elements, and launch a god-killing
monster into orbit without so much as breaking a sweat.
"Midoriya," a gruff voice called
out.
Izuku turned. Detective Naomasa Tsukauchi
stood near the school entrance, wearing his signature tan trench coat. Beside
him stood a severely deflated, skeletal Toshinori Yagi—All Might.
"The Principal would like a word,"
Tsukauchi said, his eyes scanning Izuku up and down, searching for any sign of
trauma or hidden injury. Finding none, the detective's brow furrowed slightly.
"Now."
The Principal's office was bathed in the soft,
orange glow of sunset. Nezu, the chimera principal of U.A., sat behind his
massive mahogany desk, pouring tea into fine porcelain cups with practiced
elegance.
Sitting on the sofas across from the desk were
All Might, Detective Tsukauchi, and, surprisingly, Shota Aizawa. The
underground hero was currently a mass of bandages, his left arm in a sling and
his face heavily wrapped, leaving only one bloodshot eye visible. He had
categorically refused to go to the hospital until he understood exactly what
had transpired at the USJ.
Izuku sat perfectly still in the armchair
opposite them. He didn't fidget. He didn't wring his hands or mumble to
himself. He sat with his spine straight, his hands resting lightly on his
knees, breathing deeply and rhythmically from his diaphragm.
"Tea, Midoriya?" Nezu offered,
pushing a steaming cup across the table.
"Yes, thank you, Principal Nezu,"
Izuku replied calmly. He picked up the cup, letting the warmth seep into his
palms.
Silence stretched over the room, thick with
anticipation. Finally, All Might could no longer bear it. He coughed, a small
speck of blood appearing on his lip.
"Young Midoriya... Izuku. My boy,"
All Might started, his voice a mixture of awe and absolute desperation for
answers. "What happened out there? Your arm... I saw you preparing to use
One For All at one hundred percent. By all accounts, your bones should have
been reduced to dust. Yet you are unharmed. And the power you displayed... the
wind, the fire, the rock... that was not One For All. What is going on?"
Izuku took a slow sip of his tea. He looked at
All Might, feeling a profound sense of gratitude for the man who had given him
the spark that ignited this fire.
"It was One For All, All Might. And at
the same time, it wasn't," Izuku began, his voice steady and clear. There
was no stutter.
Tsukauchi leaned forward, pulling out a small
notepad. "Midoriya, my Quirk is Lie Detector. Whatever you say, I will
know if it is the truth or a falsehood. I need you to be completely honest with
us. We need to know if you possess a hidden Quirk, or if you were modified in
some way."
"I understand, Detective. I will tell you
everything."
For the next twenty minutes, Izuku spoke. He
described the freezing of time. He described the void, the cosmic tree, and the
appearance of Yoichi Shigaraki and the past users of One For All. All Might
gasped at the mention of Nana Shimura, his hands trembling.
But Izuku didn't stop there. He described the
descent of the four glowing figures. Aang, Korra, Kyoshi, Roku. He explained
the concept of Bending—the ancient, spiritual art of manipulating the
fundamental elements. He relayed their explanation of Quirks: that Quirks were
not random biological mutations, but the stagnation and internalization of
ancient spiritual energy.
Finally, he described Raava. The Spirit of Light.
The Avatar State. And how the massive, stockpiled willpower of One For All had
acted as a bridge, forcefully reopening the dormant Avatar Cycle and binding it
to Izuku's soul.
When he finished, the room was so quiet one
could hear a pin drop.
Tsukauchi stared at his notepad, his pen
hovering in mid-air. He looked up at Izuku, his face pale.
"He's telling the truth," Tsukauchi
whispered, his voice cracking. "Every single word. My Quirk isn't catching
a single falsehood. He genuinely spoke to ancient spirits."
Aizawa let out a long, ragged sigh, leaning
his head back against the sofa. "Spirits. Reincarnation. Avatars. You've
got to be kidding me. I teach logic and rational application of Quirks. How am
I supposed to grade a kid who holds the cosmic balance of the universe in his
head?"
"This is... unprecedented," All
Might breathed, looking at Izuku as if seeing him for the first time. "One
For All was meant to defeat All For One. But this... this is beyond anything my
master, or her master, could have ever dreamed of. You didn't just inherit my
strength, my boy. You inherited the world's."
Nezu, however, was practically vibrating in
his seat. The intelligent creature took a sip of his tea, his beady black eyes
gleaming with an insatiable academic hunger.
"Fascinating! Utterly, unequivocally
fascinating!" Nezu cheered, clapping his paws together. "It perfectly
bridges the gap in early evolutionary Quirk theory! For decades, scientists
have debated the sudden, explosive appearance of Quirks. The 'Luminescent Baby'
anomaly. If Quirks are the biological mutation of dormant spiritual energy...
then the sudden surge makes perfect sense! The energy needed an outlet as
humanity lost its spiritual connection!"
Nezu hopped down from his chair, pacing in front
of his desk. "And you, Midoriya! By stockpiling pure, selfless willpower
for eight generations, One For All essentially created a spiritual battery
large enough to kickstart the original system! The 'Bending' system."
"That's what Korra called it," Izuku
nodded. "A cheat code."
"Quite!" Nezu beamed. "But
theory is just theory. We must understand the practical applications.
Eraserhead, I know you are injured, but I believe a field test is in order. We
must know the limits—or lack thereof—of this 'Avatar State'."
Aizawa groaned, wincing as he stood up.
"Fine. But I'm bringing a chair. Ground Beta. Let's go."
Ground Beta was a sprawling, faux-city
landscape used for urban combat training. In the twilight, the empty streets
and towering concrete buildings felt eerie, a ghost town waiting for
destruction.
Izuku stood in the center of a wide
intersection. Aizawa sat in a folding chair twenty yards away, an ice pack
pressed to his shoulder. All Might stood beside him in his deflated form, while
Nezu sat perched on All Might’s shoulder. Tsukauchi had remained behind to
handle the police reports regarding Shigaraki and Kurogiri.
"Alright, Midoriya," Aizawa called
out, his good eye narrowed. "First things first. I need to know if this
power is biological or environmental. I am going to erase your Quirk. I want
you to try and use One For All—the super strength—and then try to use this
'Bending'."
"Understood, Sensei," Izuku called
back.
Aizawa’s bandages rustled as his hair suddenly
defied gravity. His remaining eye glowed a fierce, intimidating red.
Izuku felt it immediately. The biological
'switch' in his body, the Quirk Factor that channeled the physical strength of
One For All, was slammed shut. He clenched his fist. The red veins refused to
appear. He tried to summon the sheer physical power that would let him smash a
robot, but nothing happened. He was physically a normal human again.
"One For All is erased, Sensei,"
Izuku confirmed. "I can't access the physical strength."
"Good. My Quirk works on the stockpiled
biological factor," Aizawa noted. "Now. Try the other thing. The
Avatar stuff."
Izuku closed his eyes. He didn't reach for the
biological switch in his body. Instead, he reached outward. He opened his mind
to the cosmic energy flowing through the earth beneath his feet and the air
around him. He felt the familiar, warm presence of Raava.
He didn't need to force it. He simply let the
light in.
Whoosh.
Aizawa gasped, stumbling backward despite his
erased Quirk. All Might shielded his eyes.
Izuku’s eyes snapped open, blazing with that
same terrifying, divine white light. His freckles glowed brilliantly in the
dusk. He rose three feet into the air, completely weightless, a localized
sphere of swirling air encasing him.
"Incredible," Nezu whispered.
"Eraserhead is actively canceling his Quirk Factor, yet the phenomena
persists. It proves the hypothesis! Bending is not a Quirk. It does not
originate from a genetic mutation in his body. Midoriya is acting as a conduit,
manipulating the ambient energy of the environment!"
Aizawa blinked, deactivating his Quirk and
rubbing his dry eye. "I can't erase a hurricane. I can't erase a mountain.
He's outside the laws of Quirk biology."
Izuku drifted gracefully back down to the
pavement, the air sphere dissipating. The glow in his eyes remained, casting an
ethereal illumination on the asphalt. The voices of the past Avatars echoed
clearly in his mind, guiding his movements.
"Show us what you can do, young
Midoriya," All Might called out. "Show us the elements."
Izuku nodded, his expression tranquil.
Water, Korra’s voice urged, a playful smirk in
her tone. Show them what a real master can do with a dry environment.
Izuku widened his stance, his movements
suddenly shifting from standard boxing forms to something fluid, graceful, and
rhythmic—like Tai Chi. He swept his arms in a slow, wide circle.
There was no water in Ground Beta. No pipes
had been broken. It was a dry, autumn evening.
But as Izuku moved his hands, the air itself
began to shimmer. He was pulling the latent humidity directly out of the
atmosphere. Wisps of vapor gathered around his fingertips, coalescing rapidly
into a floating, basketball-sized sphere of pure water.
With a sharp thrust of his palm, the sphere
shot forward like a cannonball, smashing into a concrete lamppost and denting
the solid steel. Before the water could splash to the ground, Izuku whipped his
hand back. The water reversed direction, snapping back to him like a tether.
He clenched his fist. The water instantly
froze into a jagged, lethal spear of ice. He relaxed his hand, and the ice
melted into water, which then immediately expanded into a thick, impenetrable
cloud of dense fog that completely obscured him from the heroes' view. A second
later, a gust of wind blew the fog away, revealing Izuku standing perfectly
still.
"He pulled water from the air,"
Aizawa muttered, legitimately horrified by the tactical implications. "He
doesn't need a water source. He makes the source."
Earth, Kyoshi commanded. Her presence felt
solid, heavy, and immovable. Stand your ground. Be the mountain.
Izuku’s stance changed entirely. His feet
planted wide, digging into the asphalt. His posture became rigid, his movements
sharp, powerful, and deeply rooted—Hung Gar style. He didn't look at the
ground; he didn't need to. Through his boots, the seismic vibrations of Ground
Beta painted a perfect, 3D sonar map in his mind. He could feel a rat scurrying
in a building three blocks away.
Izuku slammed his foot down.
The earth groaned. The asphalt of the
intersection shattered as a massive, ten-ton slab of solid bedrock was ripped
upward from beneath the street. Izuku didn't touch it. He punched the air in
front of him. The ten-ton boulder flew down the street like a pebble, smashing
through the façade of a mock-office building and bringing the entire structure
down in a cascade of rubble and dust.
Before the dust could settle, Izuku swept his
arms upward. The rubble of the collapsed building froze in mid-air, then
violently compacted together, forming a perfect, towering dome of impenetrable
stone in the center of the street.
All Might swallowed hard. "The sheer
scale... he could rebuild a destroyed city in minutes. Or level one in
seconds."
Air, Aang chimed in, his energy light,
evasive, and joyful. Let go of the earth. Be the leaf.
Izuku’s rigid stance melted away. He leaped
backward, his movements transitioning into Baguazhang—constant circular motion,
light on his feet, never standing still.
He didn't just manipulate the air; he rode it.
He kicked his feet in a circle, creating a sphere of rapidly spinning wind—an
air scooter. He sat on it, zipping around the intersection at blistering
speeds, effortlessly defying gravity as he rode up the side of a glass
skyscraper. Reaching the top, he leaped off into the void.
All Might nearly had a heart attack.
"Midoriya!"
But Izuku didn't fall. He snapped his arms
out, creating a massive, localized updraft. He glided down softly, completely
weightless, before landing without making a single sound. He then spun on his
heel, generating a localized F5 tornado that ripped the remaining asphalt from
the street, swirling it into the sky before he dispersed the wind with a gentle
wave of his hand, letting the debris rain down harmlessly.
"Finally... Fire," Nezu said,
leaning forward. "The element of power."
Fire is not just destruction, Roku’s grave
voice cautioned. It is life. It is the sun. It is energy. Treat it with
respect, Izuku.
Izuku took a deep, centering breath. He didn't
use the roaring, devastating plasma he had used against the Nomu. He wanted to
show control. Northern Shaolin forms took over his body. His strikes were
aggressive but deeply disciplined.
He punched forward, sending a stream of orange
flame down the street. Then, he did something that made Aizawa sit up straight.
Izuku didn't just shoot fire; he shaped it. The flame didn't dissipate. It
twisted, turning into a fiery, serpentine dragon that roared silently into the
twilight sky, swirling around the buildings before returning to Izuku,
shrinking down until it was nothing more than a small, harmless candle flame
hovering above his index finger.
Izuku closed his hand, extinguishing the
flame.
He took a final, deep breath, and the Avatar
State faded. The glow left his eyes, and he walked calmly back toward his
teachers, his breathing perfectly even. He wasn't sweating. He wasn't tired.
"I can combine them," Izuku noted
quietly, stopping in front of the stunned heroes. "And with One For All's
physical enhancement... the Avatar State amplifies the kinetic force of the
Bending by a factor of hundreds. The Nomu survived because of Shock Absorption.
But a normal person..." Izuku looked down at his hands, a brief flash of
sorrow crossing his face. "If I am not careful... I could easily kill
someone. The Avatar State is a defense mechanism as much as a tool. I need to
be in absolute control."
All Might placed a massive, warm hand on
Izuku’s shoulder. The Number One Hero looked at his successor, feeling a
strange mixture of immense pride and profound obsolescence.
"You have a control I never possessed at
your age, Izuku," All Might said softly. "You have surpassed the need
to 'learn' this power in the traditional sense. You possess the wisdom of
masters. You are no longer just a student of U.A."
"Indeed," Nezu agreed, his tone
entirely serious. "Midoriya, you must understand the political and
societal ramifications of what we have just witnessed. If the world discovers
that you possess multiple 'Quirks' of this magnitude—and that they aren't
Quirks at all—you will become the biggest target on the planet. Governments
will want you. Villains will fear you. The Symbol of Peace was a man who
punched hard. You... you are a force of nature."
"I am the Avatar," Izuku corrected
gently, looking Nezu in the eye. It wasn't arrogant; it was a simple statement
of fact. "My duty isn't to a government. It isn't even just to hero
society. It's to the balance of the world. I will learn to be a Pro Hero,
because that is the path I chose to help people. But I will not use this power
to conquer or intimidate."
Aizawa let out a rare, genuine chuckle,
shaking his head. "Well, problem child. You've certainly made my job interesting.
For now, we keep the true nature of this a secret. To the rest of the school,
you experienced a severe Quirk Awakening under extreme trauma. Multi-faceted
elemental manipulation. It’s rare, but believable enough in the current
era."
"Understood, Aizawa-sensei."
"Go back to the dorms, Midoriya. Rest.
Tomorrow, we deal with the fallout of the USJ."
The sun had fully set by the time Izuku
returned to the 1-A dormitories. The massive common room was bustling with
anxious energy. Many of the students were sitting on the couches, watching the
news reports of the USJ attack on the television.
When Izuku walked through the front doors, the
room fell dead silent.
Twenty pairs of eyes snapped to him. Uraraka
dropped her textbook. Kirishima paused halfway through eating a protein bar.
Todoroki, sitting by the window, narrowed his heterochromatic eyes,
scrutinizing Izuku’s uninjured form.
They were waiting for him to explain. They
were waiting for him to apologize for worrying them, to stumble over his words,
to act like the nervous, fragile Deku they had known for the past month.
Instead, Izuku offered them a warm, calm
smile.
"Good evening, everyone," he said,
his voice smooth and steady. "I'm sorry if I caused any worry. The police
and Principal Nezu just wanted a thorough debriefing. Are you all unhurt?"
Uraraka blinked, thrown off by his sheer
composure. "Uh... yeah, Deku. We're okay. But... are you okay? You fought
that... that thing. You were glowing!"
"I experienced a Quirk Awakening,"
Izuku lied smoothly, though he hated deceiving his friends. It was the cover
story Aizawa had mandated. "The stress of the situation caused my Quirk to
evolve and manifest differently. I'm completely fine."
"A Quirk Awakening?!" Kaminari
yelled, leaping over the couch. "Dude! You shot a column of fire that
blasted a hole in the roof! And you moved the ground! And wind! That’s not a
Quirk Awakening, that’s like... five Quirks! You're like a video game character
that unlocked all the skill trees at once!"
"It is highly illogical for a
power-stockpiling Quirk to spontaneously develop elemental manipulation,"
Iida said, pushing his glasses up his nose, though he looked deeply impressed.
"However, given the unprecedented nature of Quirks, we must trust your
explanation, Midoriya. It is a relief you are unharmed."
Izuku was about to reply when a heavy,
explosive sound echoed from the hallway leading to the elevators.
BOOM.
The common room doors blew open. Katsuki
Bakugo stood in the doorway, smoke rising from his palms, his eyes wide with a
manic, unhinged fury. His chest heaved, his teeth bared like a cornered animal.
"Kacchan," Izuku said calmly,
turning to face his childhood friend.
Bakugo didn't scream immediately. He stalked
forward, his heavy boots thudding against the hardwood floor. The other
students instinctively backed away, sensing the lethal tension radiating from
the explosive blonde.
Bakugo stopped three feet from Izuku. He
looked at Izuku’s uninjured arm, then up to his serene, unflinching green eyes.
"A Quirk Awakening?" Bakugo
whispered, his voice trembling with a rage so profound it bordered on madness.
"A Quirk Awakening. Is that what you're calling it, you damn nerd?"
"That is what it is, Kacchan."
"BULLSHIT!" Bakugo roared, the sound
deafening in the enclosed space. Small explosions popped rapidly in his palms.
"You expect me to believe that?! For ten years, you followed me around
like a Quirkless, pathetic loser! Then you show up to UA with a strength Quirk
that breaks your bones. Fine! A late bloomer! A fluke!"
Bakugo grabbed Izuku by the collar of his
uniform. In the past, Izuku would have flinched, panicked, and tried to placate
him.
Tonight, Izuku didn't move an inch. He simply
looked down at Bakugo’s hands, then back up to his eyes, his expression utterly
neutral.
"But today..." Bakugo’s voice
cracked, tears of absolute frustration pricking the corners of his eyes.
"Today, you fly? You shoot fire? You control the earth?! You had this the
whole time! You've been looking down on me! You hid four extra Quirks just to
mock me, didn't you, Deku?! TO MAKE A FOOL OUT OF ME!"
"Bakugo, let him go!" Iida shouted,
stepping forward.
"Stay out of this, Four-Eyes!"
Bakugo snarled. He pulled his right fist back, a massive explosion brewing in
his palm. "I'll kill you! I'll show you who the Number One is!"
He threw a right hook, aiming a devastating
point-blank explosion directly at Izuku's face.
Be the leaf, Aang whispered.
Izuku didn't raise his arms to block. He
didn't activate the Avatar State. He didn't even use One For All.
He simply exhaled.
As Bakugo’s fist rocketed forward, Izuku
pivoted on his left foot. He executed a flawless Baguazhang slip, his body
moving like flowing water. He sidestepped the punch by a millimeter. The
explosion detonated harmlessly over his shoulder, ruffling his green hair.
Bakugo’s eyes widened in shock. He hadn't even
seen Izuku move.
"DIE!" Bakugo roared, spinning
around and unleashing a flurry of rapid-fire explosions, a relentless barrage
of hooks, jabs, and sweeping kicks meant to overwhelm his opponent.
It was a beautiful, terrifying display of
violence. But to Izuku, who currently possessed the combat experience of
thousands of martial arts masters, Bakugo was moving in slow motion.
Izuku danced.
He didn't strike back. He wove through the
explosions with breathtaking elegance. He stepped inside Bakugo’s guard,
slipping past a right cross, ducking under a sweeping explosive kick, and
pivoting around a dual-palm blast. He moved in tight, continuous circles, using
Airbending footwork to glide across the floor with zero friction. He was
completely untouchable.
The rest of Class 1-A watched in stunned
silence. Bakugo, the combat prodigy of the class, was throwing everything he
had, tearing up the rug and scorching the walls, and he couldn't even touch
Izuku’s clothes.
"Stop running and fight me!" Bakugo
screamed, his lungs burning, his attacks growing wilder and sloppier in his
rage. He lunged forward with both hands, aiming a massive 'Stun Grenade' blast.
Izuku sighed. Earth.
As Bakugo lunged, Izuku stepped forward
instead of backward. He dropped his center of gravity, bringing his forearm up
to intercept Bakugo’s wrists before the explosion could fire. With a sharp,
rooted twist of his hips, Izuku used Bakugo’s own forward momentum against him.
He locked Bakugo’s arms, swept his leg behind
Bakugo’s ankle, and effortlessly flipped the explosive boy over his shoulder.
Bakugo slammed onto his back against the
hardwood floor with a heavy thud, all the breath knocked out of his lungs.
Before he could recover, Izuku was kneeling over him. Izuku pinned both of
Bakugo’s wrists to the floor with one hand, his grip like a vice of solid iron.
Bakugo thrashed, but he couldn't move. Izuku’s
strength, even without One For All activated, was absolute, grounded in perfect
leverage and Earthbending rooting techniques.
"Let... let me go..." Bakugo gasped,
his red eyes glaring up at Izuku with a mixture of hatred and total disbelief.
Izuku looked down at him. There was no anger
in Izuku’s eyes. There was no arrogance. There was only a deep, ancient sorrow.
"I wasn't hiding it, Kacchan," Izuku
said softly, his voice carrying just enough so that only Bakugo could hear the
true weight of it. "It awoke today. And it isn't to mock you. It isn't to
compete with you."
"Shut up," Bakugo hissed, tears
finally spilling over. "You think you're better than me. You think you're
the best."
"No," Izuku replied gently. "I
think the world is bigger than U.A. I think it's bigger than the Billboard Hero
Rankings, and it's bigger than who is Number One and who is Number Two. What
happened today at the USJ... that monster, those villains... they don't care
about our rivalry, Kacchan."
Izuku released Bakugo’s wrists and slowly stood
up, looking down at his childhood tormentor.
"I don't want to fight you, Kacchan. I
never did. My power..." Izuku paused, feeling the spiritual weight of his
past lives standing behind him. "My power is not for competition. It is
for balance. It is to protect. If you want to be the Number One Hero, then be
the Number One Hero. I will cheer for you. But do not stand in my way when
lives are on the line. Because I will not hold back against the darkness."
The common room was utterly silent. No one
dared to breathe.
Bakugo lay on the floor, staring up at the
ceiling. His chest heaved. The fire in his hands had sputtered out. The
fundamental truth of his reality—that he was superior to Deku, that Deku was a
stepping stone—had not just been broken; it had been atomized. Deku wasn't just
stronger than him. Deku was playing a completely different game, in a
completely different universe.
Slowly, Bakugo rolled over and pushed himself
off the floor. He didn't look at Izuku. He didn't look at anyone. He kept his
head down, his blonde bangs hiding his eyes.
Without a single word, he walked toward the
elevators, the doors sliding shut behind him.
Izuku let out a quiet breath, the tension
leaving his shoulders. He turned back to the rest of his classmates, who were
looking at him as if he were a mythical creature that had just descended from
Mount Olympus.
"I'm going to head to bed,
everyone," Izuku said, offering a tired, yet polite smile. "It's been
a very long day. Goodnight."
As Izuku walked toward the stairs, Todoroki
Shoto watched him go, his dual-colored eyes narrowed in intense calculation.
Uraraka and Iida exchanged bewildered glances, realizing that the sweet,
nervous boy they had befriended just weeks ago was gone.
In his place was a titan. A calm, immovable
force of nature.
Izuku reached his room and closed the door. He
didn't turn on the lights. He walked over to his window, opening it to let the
cool night air wash over his face. He extended his hand, letting a tiny,
swirling cyclone of air dance across his knuckles, before shifting it into a
small sphere of water, and finally a warm, comforting flame.
He was Izuku Midoriya. He was Aang. He was
Korra, Kyoshi, and Roku.
He was the Avatar.
And as he looked out over the sprawling city,
sensing the millions of lives, the latent energy, and the shifting shadows in
the distance, he knew his true training hadn't ended today. It had only just
begun.
The morning of the U.A. Sports Festival dawned
with a crisp, clear blue sky, but inside the 1-A waiting room, the atmosphere
was thick enough to cut with a knife.
Izuku Midoriya sat cross-legged on a bench in
the corner of the room. His eyes were closed, his breathing slow, rhythmic, and
perfectly measured. He wasn't meditating to calm his nerves; he didn't have
any. The crippling anxiety that used to define his every waking moment had been
replaced by a vast, tranquil ocean of spiritual awareness.
In the depths of his mind, he was not alone.
The festival is an exhibition of ego, Kyoshi’s
voice echoed, resonant and stern. They will expect you to display overwhelming
force. You must show them that true power lies in the mountain's restraint, not
just its landslide.
Oh, lighten up, Kyoshi, Korra chuckled, her
spiritual projection leaning against the metaphysical tree in Izuku’s mind.
It’s a tournament! It’s about testing your limits against others. Let loose a
little, kid. Show them what a fully realized Avatar can do.
No, Aang interjected gently. Izuku is right to
be cautious. The Avatar State is a defense mechanism, a cosmic force meant to
preserve the balance of the world. Using it to win a high school sports
festival would be irresponsible. It could severely injure his classmates, or
worse.
I agree with Aang, Roku added solemnly. You
hold the power of the sun and the fury of the hurricane in your hands, Izuku.
If you use all the elements at once, you will terrify this world before you can
save it.
Izuku took a deep, grounding breath, opening
his eyes in the physical world. Thank you all, he projected his thoughts
inward. I’ve made my decision. The Avatar State is off-limits today.
Furthermore, using all four elements in tandem is too overwhelming for a mere
sporting event. To maintain balance, and to test my own discipline, I will
restrict myself. One element per round. No exceptions.
"Midoriya."
Izuku blinked, pulling his focus back to the
sterile white walls of the waiting room. Shoto Todoroki stood before him. The
dual-haired boy’s face was an unreadable mask of ice, but his heterochromatic
eyes burned with a quiet, intense intensity. The rest of the class fell silent,
turning to watch the confrontation.
"Todoroki," Izuku replied evenly,
remaining seated.
"Looking at things objectively, I think
I'm stronger than you," Todoroki stated, his voice flat but carrying a
heavy, undeniable weight. "But All Might has his eye on you. I'm not
prying into why that is. But I will beat you. I'm going to prove that I can
reach the top without my old man's power."
A few weeks ago, this declaration would have
sent Izuku into a stammering panic. Today, however, Izuku didn't see a rival
issuing a challenge. Looking through the spiritual lens of the Avatar, he saw a
boy whose chi was violently split down the middle. Todoroki’s spiritual energy
was a chaotic maelstrom—one half frozen in deep, stagnant resentment, the other
half boiling with suppressed, agonizing rage. He was a boy entirely out of
balance.
Izuku stood up slowly. He didn't puff out his
chest. He simply looked Todoroki in the eye with a profound, almost sorrowful
compassion.
"You are incredibly strong,
Todoroki," Izuku said softly, his voice devoid of any malice or
competitive edge. "But you are fighting a war inside your own spirit. As
long as you reject half of who you are, you will never reach your true
potential. I'm not looking at you as an obstacle to overcome today. I'm looking
at you as someone who needs to find their balance."
Todoroki’s eyes widened a fraction, a flash of
genuine anger breaking through his icy exterior. "You know nothing about
me," he hissed, turning on his heel. "I will win with only my right
side."
As Todoroki walked away, Bakugo, sitting
across the room, scoffed quietly. He didn't yell. He didn't threaten Izuku.
Ever since the humbling encounter in the dorms, Bakugo had been unusually
quiet, his eyes constantly tracking Izuku like a man watching a sleeping
dragon.
"Let's go, everyone," Iida
announced, chopping the air with his hand. "It is time!"
The roar of the stadium was deafening. Present
Mic’s voice boomed over the loudspeakers, hyping up the crowd as Class 1-A
stepped out onto the sunlit grass. Midnight, the R-Rated Hero, stood on the
central podium, cracking her whip to silence the masses before announcing the
first event: The Obstacle Race.
A four-kilometer race around the perimeter of
the stadium. No holds barred. Any Quirk was allowed, so long as the students
remained on the course.
The students lined up in front of the massive,
narrow starting gate. The tension was palpable.
Air, Izuku decided, shifting his weight. The
element of freedom. I will use only Airbending for this round.
"START!" Midnight screamed.
Instantly, all one-hundred-plus first-year
students surged forward, cramming themselves into the claustrophobic corridor.
Elbows flew, people shouted, and the crush of bodies brought the race to a
grinding halt.
The temperature plummeted.
A massive glacier of ice erupted from the
front of the pack. Todoroki had frozen the ground, trapping dozens of students
by their feet and freezing the very air in the tunnel. He sprinted ahead,
entirely unhindered.
Izuku felt the cold locking around his boots.
Before the ice could fully solidify, he exhaled sharply. He didn't use the
immense physical stockpiling of One For All to shatter the ice; he didn't need
to. He focused his internal chi, regulating his body temperature using a basic
air-breathing technique Aang had taught him.
Then, moving with the fluid, circular grace of
Baguazhang, Izuku swept his arms outward. A concussive wave of highly
compressed air exploded from his center. The ice around him didn't just
shatter; it was blown into a fine mist.
Izuku stepped out of the freezing cloud,
completely untouched. He didn't sprint after Todoroki. He took a deep breath,
kicked his legs in a rapid, cycling motion, and summoned a sphere of rapidly
spinning wind beneath his feet.
The Air Scooter.
He sat down on the invisible sphere of wind,
humming quietly to himself as he zoomed out of the tunnel at fifty miles per
hour, gliding effortlessly over the frozen, struggling bodies of his
classmates.
Present Mic’s voice exploded over the
speakers. "WOAH! What is this?! Midoriya Izuku of Class 1-A just broke out
of Todoroki’s ice trap like it was nothing, and now he's... is he sitting on
thin air?! He's catching up to the lead!"
Up in the announcer's booth, Aizawa sat
wrapped in his bandages. "He's manipulating the air currents to reduce
friction and create propulsion," Aizawa lied smoothly into the microphone,
protecting Izuku's secret. "It's a highly versatile application of his
Quirk."
Izuku zipped past a furious Bakugo, who was
blasting his way through the air with explosions. Izuku offered a polite wave,
dodging a reactionary explosion with a simple tilt of his head, before the
first obstacle came into view.
The Robo Inferno. Massive, zero-point villains
from the entrance exam blocked the path. Todoroki, ever ruthless, froze them
entirely while they were off-balance, causing them to collapse and block the
path for everyone else.
Izuku approached the falling mountain of
metal. He didn't stop. He didn't even slow down.
As a massive robotic arm swung down to crush
him, Izuku leaped off his air scooter. He caught the updraft generated by the
falling robot, manipulating the wind to create a cushion of air beneath him. He
danced across the falling metal, his feet barely touching the surface. He moved
like a leaf on the wind, entirely evasive, bypassing the obstacle without
throwing a single punch.
The second obstacle was 'The Fall'—a massive
canyon filled with stone pillars connected by tightropes.
Todoroki was sliding across on his ice. Bakugo
was flying over with his explosions.
Izuku stood at the edge of the canyon. He took
off his U.A. track jacket. Holding the sleeves in his hands, he leaped into the
abyss.
The crowd gasped in horror. But Izuku didn't
fall. He channeled his chi into the jacket, hardening the fabric with a
continuous stream of pressurized air. It became a makeshift glider. Catching
the thermals rising from the canyon, Izuku soared upward, gliding gracefully
over the entire obstacle in a matter of seconds, performing a playful barrel
roll before landing softly on the other side.
"I don't believe it! Midoriya is making a
mockery of the course! He's flying! Literally flying!" Mic screamed.
Finally, the Minefield.
Todoroki and Bakugo were neck-and-neck,
fighting each other as much as they were navigating the explosive pink dirt.
They were completely focused on their rivalry.
They didn't notice the gentle breeze
approaching from behind.
Izuku didn't touch the ground. He summoned his
air scooter once more. Because the sphere of wind distributed his weight evenly
across the air pressure rather than the ground, he didn't trigger a single
mine. He zipped right between Bakugo and Todoroki, the rush of his passing wind
extinguishing one of Bakugo’s explosions and blowing Todoroki’s hair into his
eyes.
"See you at the finish line!" Izuku
called out cheerfully.
"DEKU!" Bakugo roared, abandoning
Todoroki to chase after him.
But it was too late. Izuku rode the wind
directly into the stadium, crossing the finish line without a single drop of
sweat on his brow, without a speck of dirt on his clothes. He had won the first
round using nothing but the air in his lungs and the peace in his heart.
"Ten Million Points."
Midnight’s announcement hung in the air like a
death sentence. Izuku stood in the center of the field, the bright pink
headband resting securely on his forehead.
The rules of the Cavalry Battle were simple.
Form a team, steal headbands, keep your own. But having ten million points
meant everyone in the stadium was going to come after him.
Earth, Izuku decided, firmly planting his
boots into the grass. The element of substance. Unyielding, steadfast, and
rooted. Let them come.
"Midoriya!" Uraraka jogged up to
him, a determined look on her face. "Let me team up with you! You're a
target, but I know you've got a plan."
Izuku smiled warmly. "Thank you, Uraraka.
I appreciate your courage."
Fumikage Tokoyami and Mei Hatsume quickly
joined them, seeing the tactical advantage of sticking with the boy who had
just defied gravity in the first round.
"What's the strategy, Midoriya?"
Tokoyami asked, Dark Shadow hovering protectively over his shoulder. "We
will be besieged from all sides."
"We don't move," Izuku said simply.
Hatsume blinked behind her goggles.
"Don't move? But my babies need to show off their mobility!"
"We will show off your jetpack for
stability," Izuku corrected gently. "But strategically, running
wastes energy and exposes our flanks. Tokoyami, Uraraka, Hatsume, you are my
foundation. Keep me elevated. I will handle the defense. No one will take this
headband."
The buzzer sounded.
Immediately, a dozen teams charged toward
Izuku’s position in the center of the field. Tetsutetsu’s team, Kendo’s team,
and several others rushed in, eager to steal the ten million points.
Izuku closed his eyes. He didn't look at the
incoming attackers. He shifted his stance, dropping low into a traditional Hung
Gar horse stance atop his teammates' shoulders. He extended his senses
downward, through Uraraka, through Tokoyami, directly into the earth beneath
the stadium grass.
Seismic Sense.
The world went dark, replaced by a perfect,
vibrating sonar map in his mind. He could feel the heavy, thudding footsteps of
Tetsutetsu. He could feel the light, rapid steps of Kendo. He knew exactly
where everyone was, their velocity, their weight, and their trajectory.
Tetsutetsu reached out to grab the headband.
Izuku stomped his foot against Uraraka’s
shoulder—not hard enough to hurt her, but hard enough to send a localized
kinetic shockwave down into the earth.
RUMBLE.
Three massive slabs of solid rock violently
erupted from the ground, forming a perfect, triangular barricade around Izuku’s
team. Tetsutetsu slammed face-first into the stone, falling backward with a
groan.
"What the...?!" someone yelled.
"He has an Earth Quirk too?!"
Up in the stands, the Pro Heroes were
murmuring furiously. First wind manipulation, now high-level geokinesis? What
was this kid's Quirk?
For the next ten minutes, Izuku’s team became
a fortress. Whenever a team tried to approach, Izuku would weave his hands,
summoning walls of rock, shifting the soil to create mud pits that trapped the
other students' feet, or raising pillars to block incoming projectiles. He
never attacked. He never injured anyone. He simply controlled the battlefield
with absolute, undeniable authority.
"He's not even looking at us!"
Kaminari complained, trapped in a trench Izuku had opened up.
"Midoriya is a wall," Tokoyami
whispered in awe.
With two minutes left on the clock, the
temperature dropped again. Todoroki’s team charged in. Iida, using his Recipro
Burst, moved at blinding speeds, carrying Todoroki right to the edge of Izuku's
rock barricade.
Todoroki unleashed a massive wave of ice,
intending to freeze the rock and Izuku's team solid.
Izuku opened his eyes. He thrust both palms
forward.
He didn't bend the ice. He bent the earth
beneath the ice. The ground violently bucked, shattering Todoroki’s glacier
from the bottom up, turning the devastating attack into harmless snow.
From the sky, an explosion roared. Bakugo had
abandoned his team, launching himself over the rock walls with a murderous
scream, his hand outstretched for the ten million points.
"DEKU!"
Izuku didn't flinch. As Bakugo descended,
Izuku swept his arm upward. A large pillar of earth shot up from the ground,
intercepting Bakugo in mid-air. The pillar didn't strike Bakugo; it shaped
itself into a massive, open hand made of rock. The stone hand gently but firmly
caught Bakugo by the waist, arresting his momentum entirely, and then softly
deposited the furious boy out of bounds.
The buzzer blared. Time was up.
Izuku hadn't moved an inch from the center of
the field. The ten million point headband remained securely on his forehead.
Well done, Kyoshi praised in his mind. You
stood your ground. You were the mountain.
Izuku smiled, dismantling his rock walls with
a wave of his hand, leaving the field perfectly flat once more. He had secured
his place in the finals, and he had done it his way.
The intermission before the 1v1 tournament was
supposed to be a time for rest. But as Izuku walked the quiet corridors of the
stadium, he found himself cornered in a deserted hallway by Shoto Todoroki.
Todoroki’s face was shadowed. He looked at
Izuku not with anger, but with a cold, desperate curiosity.
"You didn't use the wind," Todoroki
said. "In the cavalry battle. You used earth. And at the USJ, you used
fire. What are you, Midoriya? Are you All Might's secret love child or
something?"
Izuku couldn't help but let out a small,
genuine laugh. "No, Todoroki. I'm not."
"Then what is it? Why do you hold back?
Why do you look at me like you pity me?" Todoroki’s voice cracked
slightly, the ice in his demeanor fracturing.
Izuku leaned against the wall, giving Todoroki
his full attention. "I don't pity you. I worry for you. Your spirit is in
agony."
Todoroki’s eyes narrowed. For the next ten
minutes, the boy poured his heart out. He spoke of his father, Endeavor, the
Number Two Hero who was obsessed with surpassing All Might. He spoke of Quirk
Marriages, of being bred as a masterpiece. And, with a trembling voice, he
spoke of his mother—how she had been driven mad by Endeavor’s abuse, how she
had poured boiling water over his left eye because his fire side looked too
much like his father.
"In battle, I will never use my left
side," Todoroki declared, gripping his left arm. "I will win this
tournament with my mother's power alone. I will completely reject him."
Inside Izuku’s mind, the Avatars reacted.
Aang felt a deep, profound sorrow for the boy
who had lost his childhood. Korra was seething with rage at Endeavor's cruelty.
Roku recognized the danger of a powerful bender rejecting their own nature, a
path that only led to madness.
He is wounded, Aang whispered. He thinks his
power belongs to his father. He does not understand that his inner fire is his
own life force.
Help him, Izuku, Korra urged. Don't just beat
him. Save him.
Izuku looked at Todoroki. The avatar's cosmic
awareness allowed him to see the spiritual damage. Todoroki’s chi was blocked
at the heart chakra, suffocated by grief and hatred.
"Todoroki," Izuku said, pushing off
the wall. "Your mother's pain is a tragedy. And your father's sins are his
own. But you are making a fundamental mistake."
"What did you say?" Todoroki
bristled.
"You think your fire belongs to Endeavor.
It doesn't." Izuku placed a hand over his own heart. "Power is not
genetic. It is spiritual. The fire inside you is yours, Shoto. It is your
warmth, your energy, your life. By rejecting it, you aren't hurting Endeavor.
You are slowly killing yourself. In our match... I will show you."
Izuku walked away, leaving Todoroki standing
in the hallway, stunned and conflicted by the absolute certainty in the
green-haired boy's voice.
"LADIES AND GENTLEMEN! WELCOME TO THE
SECOND MATCH OF the SECOND ROUND!" Present Mic roared, the crowd erupting
into a frenzy. "ON ONE SIDE, THE MASTER OF ICE, SHOTO TODOROKI! ON THE
OTHER, THE BOY OF MANY MYSTERIES, IZUKU MIDORIYA!"
Izuku stepped onto the concrete arena. The sun
was beginning its descent, casting long shadows across the stadium. He took a
deep breath, feeling the moisture in the air, the latent heat of the sun, and
the solid earth beneath his feet.
Water, Izuku decided. The element of change.
He attacks with ice. I will answer with the ocean.
Todoroki stood across from him, his right side
already frosting over. "I don't care what you said in the hallway,
Midoriya. I will break you."
"BEGIN!" Midnight shouted.
Todoroki didn't hesitate. He stomped his right
foot, unleashing a glacier—a massive, towering tidal wave of solid ice that
ripped across the arena, intending to instantly encase Izuku and throw him out
of bounds. The air temperature plummeted below freezing in a nanosecond.
The crowd screamed. It was the same attack he
had used to instantly defeat Sero in the first round.
Izuku didn't dodge. He didn't summon fire to
melt it. He simply raised his hands, his movements incredibly fluid, channeling
Tai Chi.
Ice is just water with patience, Korra’s voice
echoed.
As the glacier threatened to crush him,
Izuku's hands glowed with a faint, pale blue light. He didn't fight the ice; he
welcomed it. He caught the leading edge of the glacier with his Bending, his
internal chi connecting with the frozen water.
With a smooth, sweeping motion of his arms,
Izuku redirected the entire mass of the glacier.
The ice groaned, cracking and shifting
impossibly. Instead of hitting Izuku, the massive structure of ice bent in
half, curving around Izuku like a protective dome. Then, with a sharp thrust of
his palms, Izuku altered the physical state of the ice.
The glacier instantly liquefied.
Tens of thousands of gallons of freezing water
splashed onto the arena floor. Before it could spread, Izuku swept his arms
upward. The water defied gravity, rising into the air and forming a massive,
swirling vortex around him.
Todoroki stumbled back, his eyes wide with
shock. "What... how did you...?"
Izuku lashed his arm forward. The vortex of
water formed into a massive, high-pressure whip, striking the ground near
Todoroki’s feet with enough force to crack the concrete.
"You're using ice, Todoroki," Izuku
called out calmly over the sound of the rushing water. "Ice is water. You
are handing me my weapon. Use your fire. Fight me with everything you
have."
Todoroki gritted his teeth, his breath puffing
into white mist. "I told you... I refuse!"
He sent another wave of ice, sharper this
time, a barrage of frozen spears.
Izuku stepped into the attack. He caught the
first spear with his water whip, liquefying it upon impact. He danced through
the remaining spears, his movements completely fluid and evasive. He closed the
distance in seconds, bringing his water whip around to strike Todoroki in the
chest, sending the boy skidding backward toward the edge of the arena.
Todoroki’s right side was beginning to frost
over heavily. Ice crept up his neck and across his face. He was suffering from
severe frostbite. His movements were slowing down.
"You're shivering," Izuku pointed
out, letting his water whip pool around his feet. "Your Quirk has a limit.
The ice is freezing your own body, and you're refusing to use the heat to
regulate it. This isn't a rebellion, Todoroki. It's suicide."
Up in the stands, Endeavor was gripping the
railing so hard the metal groaned. What is this kid doing? He’s playing with
him! Use your fire, Shoto!
"Shut up!" Todoroki yelled,
launching himself forward, trying to freeze Izuku at close range.
Izuku effortlessly deflected his blows with
Waterbending, parrying Todoroki's frozen strikes with liquid grace. "Why
are you holding back?! Who are you trying to prove wrong?! Your father is a
terrible man, but he is not in this arena! It's just you and me! Look at
yourself!"
Izuku slammed his palm into Todoroki’s chest,
sending a wave of warm water over him to momentarily stave off the frostbite.
"It's YOUR power, Shoto! Not his!"
The words struck Todoroki like a physical
blow. Time seemed to slow down. The memory of his mother’s crying face, the
memory of her words—You want to be a hero, don't you? It's okay for you to be
who you want to be.—flashed in his mind.
The blockage in Todoroki’s spirit shattered.
FWOOSH.
A massive pillar of roaring red and orange
flames erupted from Todoroki’s left side. The heat was instantaneous,
vaporizing the remaining ice on the arena and sending a shockwave of hot air
throughout the stadium. The frost on his body melted away instantly.
Todoroki looked up, tears evaporating off his
cheeks. Half of his body was encased in ice, the other half burning with the
fury of a miniature sun.
In the stands, Endeavor roared with triumph.
"SHOOOTOOOOO!"
Todoroki ignored him. He looked only at Izuku.
"You're crazy, Midoriya. Pushing your opponent to use their full power.
Don't blame me for what happens next."
Izuku smiled. It was a radiant, beautiful
smile.
"I won't," Izuku said.
Fire, Roku commanded softly.
Izuku dropped his Waterbending stance. The
water at his feet instantly evaporated. He widened his stance, his muscles
tensing, transitioning into the aggressive, dynamic forms of Northern Shaolin.
Todoroki unleashed a massive wave of fire.
Izuku didn't dodge. He punched forward.
A stream of pure, white-hot plasma erupted
from Izuku’s fist, meeting Todoroki’s flames in the center of the arena. The
collision of the two fires created a deafening roar. But Izuku’s fire was
different. It wasn't chaotic. It was perfectly controlled. Izuku manipulated
his flames, causing them to spiral around Todoroki’s fire, neutralizing the
heat and pushing it backward.
"He has fire too?!" Present Mic
screamed, pulling his hair out. "What is happening?!"
Todoroki gritted his teeth. He realized he
couldn't win a battle of attrition. He needed to end it now. He began to cool
the air with his right side while simultaneously heating it to extreme
temperatures with his left.
The air in the arena began to distort,
shimmering violently. The extreme temperature differential was creating a
massive, localized pressure bomb.
Flashfreeze Heatwave.
"Midnight! Stop them!" Cementoss
yelled from his booth, slamming his hands onto his desk. "If he releases
that, he'll kill the boy!"
Massive walls of cement rapidly erupted
between Izuku and Todoroki, intending to block the blast.
"No," Izuku whispered.
He didn't want the match to end in a draw. He
didn't want Todoroki to feel like a monster. He needed to finish this, not with
violence, but with profound, spiritual healing.
Izuku closed his eyes. He let go of his
earthly tethers. He opened the gates.
The Avatar State.
His eyes snapped open, glowing with a
blinding, divine white light. His freckles ignited. The chaotic wind of the
arena suddenly stilled, bowing to his absolute authority.
Todoroki unleashed the Flashfreeze Heatwave.
The air detonated. A massive shockwave of superheated and supercooled air
blasted forward, tearing the cement walls to absolute dust. It was an explosion
capable of leveling a city block.
Izuku stepped forward into the blast.
He raised his hands, and the world held its
breath.
Using a masterful, simultaneous combination of
Air, Water, and Fire bending fueled by the cosmic power of the Avatar State,
Izuku caught the explosion. He didn't stop it; he parted it. Like a god parting
the sea, the devastating shockwave of fire and ice split violently around
Izuku, blasting harmlessly into the reinforced barriers of the stadium walls,
leaving a pristine, triangular safe zone right down the middle.
Izuku walked through the parted explosion. He
was completely untouched. No burns. No frostbite. Just the terrifying,
beautiful glow of a fully realized deity.
Todoroki stared in absolute horror and awe as
Izuku emerged from the smoke, floating inches above the ground. Todoroki tried
to raise his arm, tried to fight, but he had exhausted all his energy. He fell
to his knees.
Izuku landed softly in front of him.
This was the moment to strike. A simple push
of wind would send Todoroki out of bounds.
Instead, Izuku knelt down. The white light in
his eyes shifted, incorporating a deep, cosmic blue and vibrant green.
Energybending. The ancient art of bending the
chi within another living being.
Izuku placed his glowing palm directly against
the center of Todoroki’s chest, over his heart chakra.
Todoroki gasped. He didn't feel pain. He felt...
light.
A blinding pillar of blue and green energy
erupted from Izuku and Todoroki, shooting straight up into the afternoon sky.
It illuminated the entire stadium.
Within Todoroki’s mind, the dark, swirling
chaos of his hatred, his trauma, and the cold stagnation of his resentment were
forcefully flushed out. Izuku’s cosmic energy flowed through Todoroki’s
spiritual pathways, untangling the knots, soothing the burns, and forcing the
chaotic halves of his soul to finally, peacefully merge.
The blinding light faded.
Izuku’s eyes returned to their normal green.
The Avatar State dispersed, leaving the arena in total silence.
Todoroki remained on his knees. He looked down
at his hands. He felt warm. For the first time in his entire life, he didn't feel
the suffocating cold of his mother’s regret, nor the burning agony of his
father’s ambition. He just felt like Shoto.
Tears—warm, gentle tears—spilled down
Todoroki’s cheeks. He looked up at Izuku, who was smiling softly at him, a look
of immense, brotherly pride on his face.
Todoroki leaned back, completely emotionally
spent, and allowed himself to fall backward. His shoulders hit the concrete
just beyond the white boundary line.
"Todoroki is out of bounds!"
Midnight announced, her voice trembling slightly in awe of what she had just
witnessed. "Midoriya advances to the next round!"
The stadium didn't cheer immediately. They
were too stunned. They had watched a brutal, terrifying clash of elements end
not in a bloody knockout, but in a display of what looked like divine
intervention.
Up in the stands, Endeavor was dead silent.
His flames flickered weakly. He looked at Izuku Midoriya—a boy who had just
walked through a localized nuke, who wielded fire better than the Number Two
Hero, and who had pacified his masterpiece without throwing a single punch. For
the first time in a decade, Enji Todoroki felt true, primal fear.
Izuku offered his hand to Todoroki.
Shoto looked at the hand, then up at Izuku’s
smiling face. He took it. Izuku pulled him to his feet.
"Thank you," Todoroki whispered, his
voice thick with emotion.
"You're welcome, Shoto," Izuku
replied softly.
As they walked off the ruined arena together,
Izuku felt the profound approval of the Avatars resting in his soul. He hadn't
just won a match. He had brought balance to a broken boy.
The Festival of Balance was only half over,
but Izuku Midoriya had already won the most important battle of the day.
The door to Gran Torino’s apartment in
Yamanashi Prefecture was rusted, the paint peeling away to reveal oxidized
metal that groaned in protest as Izuku pushed it open. The hallway smelled
faintly of stale microwave taiyaki and dust.
Under normal circumstances, a first-year
student walking into the home of a legendary, semi-retired Pro Hero would be
trembling with nerves. Just a few weeks ago, Izuku Midoriya would have been
sweating bullets, reciting Gran Torino's entire hero registry entry in his
head, terrified of making a poor first impression.
But Izuku did not tremble. He stepped over the
threshold with the quiet, measured grace of a drifting leaf.
"Excuse me," Izuku called out
softly, his voice carrying perfectly through the cramped, dimly lit apartment.
"Torino-sensei?"
A sudden, sharp whistling sound cut through
the air.
From the shadows of the ceiling, a small,
wizened figure rocketed downward, moving at a speed that would have decapitated
a normal man. Gran Torino, using his Jet Quirk, ricocheted off the wall,
turning himself into a high-velocity human bullet aimed squarely at the back of
Izuku’s head. It was a test. A brutal, unforgiving assessment of Toshinori's
new successor. Torino fully expected the boy to panic, to try and summon the
bone-breaking power of One For All, and to end up flat on his face.
Izuku didn't even turn around.
Air, the boy thought simply.
He didn't move his feet. He merely shifted his
shoulders, performing a micro-evasion rooted in Baguazhang. At the same time,
he exhaled, manipulating the air density directly behind his head. The air
suddenly became as thick as a mattress.
Gran Torino hit the cushion of solidified air
and bounced off with a startled squawk. He tumbled through the air, completely
losing his momentum, before Izuku calmly turned, raised a hand, and generated a
gentle, swirling vortex that caught the elderly hero mid-fall, lowering him
softly to the tatami mat.
The apartment fell dead silent.
Gran Torino stood up, dusting off his yellow
cape. His beady eyes were wide, staring at the green-haired teenager. He had
watched the U.A. Sports Festival on television. He had seen the phenomenal
displays of elemental power. But seeing it on a screen and experiencing the
utter, terrifying casualness of it in person were two different things.
"You didn't flinch," Torino rasped,
dropping his senile old man act instantly. "You didn't even look at me.
And you didn't use One For All."
"I didn't need to, Torino-sensei,"
Izuku replied, offering a respectful bow. "Your trajectory was linear. The
air currents telegraphed your movement three seconds before you launched
yourself."
Torino grunted, walking over to the small
kitchen area to grab a plate of cold taiyaki. "Toshinori called me.
Babbling like a fool. Said you 'unlocked the universe' or some poetic nonsense.
I told him he was being dramatic. But... that wasn't a Quirk Awakening, was it,
kid?"
Izuku shook his head slowly. "No, sir. It
is something much older."
Gran Torino chewed on a pastry, his sharp eyes
scanning Izuku. He saw the posture. The relaxed shoulders, the perfectly
balanced center of gravity, the rhythmic breathing. This wasn't a teenager
struggling with a sudden influx of power. This was a grandmaster who had
already lived a hundred lifetimes.
"I was going to teach you how to spread
One For All throughout your body so you'd stop shattering your limbs,"
Torino grumbled, sitting down on a worn cushion. "I was going to beat you
black and blue until you learned how to use it like a natural extension of
yourself. But looking at you... your physical vessel is perfectly attuned. If
you activated Toshinori's power right now, you wouldn't break a sweat, would
you?"
"I call it Full Cowling," Izuku admitted
gently. "But yes. The spiritual bridge of the Avatar State completely
rewired my chi pathways. My body can handle One For All without injury now,
because One For All is no longer just brute force. It is the fuel for my
Bending."
"Avatar State. Bending. Chi," Torino
muttered, rubbing his temples. "I'm too old for this. Fine. If you don't
need physical training, then what the hell are you doing here, kid? Why intern
with a washed-up old man?"
Izuku walked over and sat down on a cushion
opposite Gran Torino, crossing his legs into a perfect lotus position.
"Because, Sensei, you knew Nana Shimura.
You know the history of One For All better than anyone besides All Might. And I
need a safe, isolated place." Izuku looked down at his hands. "I have
mastered the physical elements. But the spiritual realm... the place where One
For All truly resides... I have only scratched the surface. I need to meditate.
I need to cross over into the Spirit World to understand our enemy."
Gran Torino’s breath hitched. "Our enemy.
You mean..."
"All For One," Izuku said, the name
carrying a heavy, grim weight in the small room. "He is not just a man
anymore, Torino-sensei. I can feel him. Even from hundreds of miles away, I can
feel a wound in the world. I need to see it clearly."
Torino stared at the boy for a long time.
Finally, the old hero sighed, a profound sadness settling in his wrinkles.
"Alright, kid. Do what you need to do. I'll make sure nobody disturbs
you."
Izuku closed his eyes. He rested his hands on
his knees, touching his thumbs to his middle fingers. He slowed his breathing.
Inhale for four seconds. Hold for seven. Exhale for eight.
The physical world fell away. The smell of
dust and taiyaki vanished, replaced by the scent of ozone, ancient pine, and
cosmic dust.
Izuku’s consciousness materialized in a realm
of breathtaking, chaotic beauty.
The Spirit World was a place unbound by the
laws of physics. Above him, a sky of swirling, iridescent purple and gold
nebulas stretched out into infinity. Below his feet was a plane of glowing,
crystalline water that perfectly reflected the cosmos, yet he didn't sink into
it. Strange, ethereal flora—glowing lotus flowers the size of buildings, trees
with leaves made of pure light—dotted the horizon.
Spirits of all shapes and sizes drifted past
him. Some looked like playful, translucent animals; others were bizarre,
geometric shapes that hummed with musical frequencies.
"It is beautiful, isn't it?"
Izuku turned. Aang sat on a glowing lily pad a
few feet away, holding his wooden staff, a serene smile on his young face.
Beside him stood Korra, her arms crossed, looking out over the water. Kyoshi
and Roku materialized a moment later, their imposing figures casting long,
colorful shadows on the crystalline surface.
"It's incredible," Izuku breathed,
feeling entirely at peace. "But... it feels crowded. Heavier than the
stories you showed me in my mind."
"That is because you are not just seeing
the ancient spirits, Izuku," Korra said, pointing toward the horizon.
"Look closer."
Izuku focused his vision. Woven among the
ancient, luminescent spirits were smaller, more erratic lights. They flickered
with a desperate, fragmented energy. Some were shaped like tools, others like
animals, others like abstract bursts of color.
"Are those... Quirks?" Izuku asked,
his eyes widening.
"They are the souls attached to the
Quirks," Roku corrected solemnly. "When humanity internalized
spiritual energy into biological mutations, they tethered a piece of their soul
to that power. The vestiges you see within One For All are a concentrated
example of this. But every person with a Quirk has a spiritual tether to this
realm."
"And that," Kyoshi said, her voice
dropping to a dangerous, rumbling baritone, "is where the imbalance lies.
Follow us."
The four Avatars began to glide across the
water. Izuku followed, moving purely by willpower. The deeper they went into
the Spirit World, the darker the sky became. The vibrant purples and golds gave
way to a sickening, bruised crimson. The beautiful, singing spirits became
sparse, replaced by an oppressive, suffocating silence.
Eventually, they arrived at a massive, jagged
chasm in the crystalline water. It looked like a wound in the fabric of reality
itself.
From the chasm poured a thick, suffocating
miasma of black and red energy. It was a localized hurricane of pure,
unadulterated malice.
Izuku stumbled backward, clutching his chest
as a wave of spiritual nausea hit him. Pain. Despair. Greed. Absolute,
consuming hunger. The emotions radiating from the chasm were deafening.
"What is that?" Izuku gasped.
Above the chasm, the blinding light of Raava,
the Spirit of Light and Peace, descended. Her massive kite-like form pulsed
rapidly, fighting against the encroaching darkness.
"Thousands of years ago, I fought my
counterpart," Raava resonated, her voice echoing in Izuku's soul.
"Vaatu. The Spirit of Darkness and Chaos. He was defeated, locked away,
and eventually destroyed, destined to slowly regrow within me over ten thousand
years."
"But energy cannot be destroyed, only
transformed," Aang said, stepping to the edge of the chasm, his gray eyes
filled with sorrow. "When the Avatar Cycle went dormant and the world's
spiritual energy mutated into Quirks, the residual dark energy of Vaatu
scattered as well. It sought a vessel."
"It found one," Korra growled, her
fists clenching.
From the black, swirling depths of the chasm,
a figure began to rise.
It was not a man. It was a colossal,
terrifying amalgamation of screaming faces, distorted limbs, and violently
clashing colors. It was a spiritual tumor, bloated and rotting, constantly
consuming itself and expanding. At the very center of the mass was a
featureless man in a sharp business suit, his face entirely smooth, devoid of
eyes or a nose.
All For One.
"He is not just a villain with a stealing
Quirk," Roku explained, his eyes narrowed. "He is a spiritual
parasite. Every time he steals a Quirk, he rips a piece of that person's soul
into himself. He has spent over a century gorging himself on the spiritual
energy of this world. He has become the new vessel for chaos. A localized
Vaatu."
Izuku stared in horror as thousands of
trapped, fragmented souls wailed within the dark mass of All For One's
spiritual projection. It was a fate worse than death.
"This is why the Avatar State
awakened," Kyoshi said, stepping up beside Izuku. "All Might
shattered his physical body, yes. But All For One's spirit remains intact, and
it is starving. If he is allowed to continue, he will consume the spiritual
balance of the entire planet. He will plunge the world into ten thousand years
of darkness."
Izuku felt a heavy hand on his shoulder. He
turned to see Yoichi Shigaraki, the first wielder of One For All, stepping out
from behind Raava. Yoichi looked at the monstrous form of his brother with
deep, agonizing grief.
"You hold the power to end this,
Izuku," Yoichi said softly. "Not by killing him. If you kill his
physical body, this spiritual mass will simply rupture, scattering the
corrupted souls and plunging the world into madness. You must sever his
connection. You must use the energy of the cosmos to strip the darkness
away."
"Energybending," Izuku whispered,
remembering what he had done to Todoroki. But that had been a gentle
untangling. This... this would be a war of souls.
"We will be with you when the time
comes," Raava promised, her light pushing back the encroaching red miasma.
"But the balance of the physical world is shifting, Avatar. The darkness
is moving early."
Izuku frowned. "Moving early? What do you
mean?"
Before Raava could answer, a violent, jagged
spike of dark energy shot out from the chasm, piercing through the fabric of
the Spirit World. But it wasn't aimed at Izuku. It was a tether, extending
outward into the physical world, hundreds of miles away.
"Bloodlust," Kyoshi identified
immediately. "A fanaticism so deep it is tearing a hole in the physical
realm. And nearby... artificial darkness."
Izuku closed his eyes, focusing on the tether.
He felt it. It was cold, jagged, and reeked of iron and stagnant blood.
Hosu City.
Then, he felt another presence. A bright,
usually disciplined spirit that was rapidly turning black with the same
stagnant hatred. It was a spirit he recognized.
Iida.
Izuku’s eyes snapped open in the physical
world.
Gran Torino jumped as Izuku violently gasped
for air, his eyes blazing momentarily with white light before fading back to
green.
"Kid? You alright? You were under for two
days," Torino said, checking his watch.
"Two days?!" Izuku stood up, moving
with fluid urgency. He didn't feel stiff or hungry. The cosmic energy sustained
him. But panic was rising in his chest. "Torino-sensei, turn on the news.
Now."
Torino grabbed the remote and flicked on the
small CRT television.
The screen was filled with images of absolute
destruction. Plumes of black smoke rose into the night sky. Buildings were
crumbling. And in the center of the chaos, monstrous, bird-brained
creatures—Nomu—were tearing through the streets of Hosu City, fighting Pro
Heroes.
"Hosu..." Torino breathed, his eyes
widening. "That's where the Hero Killer has been operating. But these
creatures... they're from the USJ!"
"All For One is testing the waters,"
Izuku said, his voice terrifyingly calm despite the urgency. He walked toward
the open window of the apartment. "He's creating artificial chaos to
distract the heroes while his agents operate in the shadows. Iida is
there."
"The class rep kid? His brother was
crippled by Stain," Torino realized, connecting the dots. "He went
there for revenge. Kid, wait! We have to take the bullet train, it'll take an
hour—"
Izuku climbed onto the windowsill. The night
wind whipped his green hair around his face.
"An hour is too long, Sensei," Izuku
said, looking back at Gran Torino. "I will handle the balance in Hosu.
Stay here and coordinate with the authorities."
"Wait! How the hell are you going to get
there faster than the train?!"
Izuku didn't answer. He stepped off the
fifth-story windowsill into the empty air.
Torino rushed to the window, expecting to see
the boy plummet to the street. Instead, he saw Izuku Midoriya rising rapidly
into the night sky. Izuku had summoned a massive, compressed sphere of spinning
air beneath his feet. With a flick of his wrists, he drew a localized thermal
updraft, shooting himself into the stratosphere like a rocket.
Within seconds, the boy was nothing more than
a green speck, cutting through the clouds at supersonic speeds, leaving a trail
of displaced, howling wind in his wake.
Torino slumped against the windowsill, shaking
his head. "Toshinori... you didn't pass the torch to a hero. You passed it
to a god."
The flight to Hosu took exactly twelve
minutes.
For Izuku, soaring three miles above the earth
was not terrifying; it was the ultimate freedom. Aang’s memories guided his
movements, adjusting his drag and lift seamlessly. The air was thin and
freezing at this altitude, but Izuku maintained his body heat through the
fire-breathing techniques of the Sun Warriors.
As the burning skyline of Hosu City came into
view, Izuku’s cosmic awareness flared.
The city was a mess of spiritual noise. He
could feel the panicked, chaotic chi of the civilians fleeing the destruction.
He could feel the desperate, exhausted energy of the Pro Heroes fighting the
Nomu. And, most prominently, he could feel the dark, artificial, Vaatu-like
sickness radiating from the Nomu themselves. They were hollow husks, stuffed
with stolen, screaming Quirks.
He could have landed in the town square and destroyed
the Nomu in an instant. But the Pro Heroes, including Endeavor, were already
rallying against them.
No, the true imbalance lay in a narrow, unlit
alleyway on the outskirts of the combat zone.
Izuku felt the jagged, bloody tether of the
Hero Killer. And beneath it, the fading, terrified spirit of the Pro Hero
Native, and the rapidly darkening soul of Tenya Iida.
Izuku folded his arms, entirely removing his
air resistance, and went into a steep, terminal velocity dive.
In the claustrophobic darkness of the
alleyway, the smell of blood was overwhelming.
Tenya Iida lay flat on his back, paralyzed.
Tears of absolute, helpless rage streamed down his face. Above him stood the
nightmare known as Stain. The Hero Killer’s eyes were wide, manic, completely
consumed by his twisted ideology. He held his bloodstained katana high above
Iida’s chest, ready to deliver the final, fatal plunge.
"You are a fake," Stain rasped, his
long, grotesque tongue licking his dry lips. "Consumed by your own selfish
desire for revenge. You are exactly what is wrong with this society. You do not
deserve the title of Hero. Die, and let your death be a lesson."
Iida squeezed his eyes shut. I'm sorry,
Tensei.
Stain thrust the blade downward.
THOOM.
The sword did not pierce Iida’s heart.
A localized, concussive wave of air struck the
alleyway with the force of a bomb, kicking up a massive cloud of dust and
debris. Stain was physically blown backward by the sheer atmospheric pressure,
his boots skidding across the asphalt as he crossed his arms to shield his
face.
Iida gasped, his eyes snapping open.
Standing over him, his green U.A. tracksuit
rippling in the wind, was Izuku Midoriya.
Izuku didn't look frantic. He didn't look
scared. He stood with his feet planted firmly, his hands relaxed at his sides,
exuding an aura of absolute, impenetrable tranquility.
"Midoriya...?" Iida choked out,
unable to move his lips fully. "What... what are you doing here? Run! You
can't fight him! He's the Hero Killer!"
Izuku looked down at his friend. His green
eyes were filled with a profound sadness. "Iida. I am so sorry for what
happened to your brother. But this... throwing your life away to murder a man
in an alleyway... this is not who you are. Let the hatred go."
From the shadows of the dust cloud, Stain let
out a low, guttural chuckle.
"Another child playing dress-up,"
Stain hissed, stepping forward, his blood-red scarf billowing like a severed
artery. He pointed his katana at Izuku. "Step aside, boy. This one's soul
is tainted. He must be purged. If you stand in the way of true justice, you
will die with him."
Izuku slowly turned his gaze toward Stain.
To the Hero Killer, something was immediately,
viscerally wrong. Stain made his living by reading the eyes of his victims. He
saw arrogance in the fakes, fear in the weak, and occasionally, a flicker of
true resolve.
But looking into Izuku Midoriya's eyes was
like looking into a deep, bottomless ocean. There was no fear. There was no
arrogance. There was only a heavy, ancient judgment.
"True justice?" Izuku echoed softly.
"You speak of justice, Chizome Akaguro. But I look at you, and I do not
see a savior. I see a man drowning in a river of his own blood, desperately
trying to pull others down with him. You are not cleansing society. You are
just adding to its imbalance."
Stain’s manic grin vanished. How did this kid
know his real name? The boy's words struck a nerve, violating the core tenet of
Stain's fanatical religion.
"Insolent brat!" Stain roared.
He moved with terrifying, blinding speed. The
Hero Killer was a master of urban combat, using the walls of the alley to
ricochet like a pinball, turning himself into a blur of blades and lethal
intent. He didn't aim to kill Izuku immediately; he aimed to nick him, to draw
just one drop of blood to activate his Bloodcurdle Quirk.
He swung a jagged dagger at Izuku’s cheek,
moving faster than the human eye could track.
Izuku didn't even blink.
Earth.
With a micro-movement of his wrist, Izuku
manipulated the concrete of the adjacent wall. Before the dagger could travel
the final inch to his face, a jagged slab of stone shot out from the brickwork,
intercepting the blade.
CLANG.
The dagger buried itself into the solid rock.
Before Stain could pull it free, Izuku closed his fist. The stone violently
contracted, snapping the reinforced steel dagger into three pieces like a dry
twig.
Stain’s eyes widened in shock. He abandoned
the hilt, twisting mid-air to bring his katana down in a sweeping arc aimed at
Izuku’s shoulder.
Izuku pivoted on his heel, executing a
flawless Baguazhang spin. He didn't retreat; he stepped into Stain's guard. The
katana sliced through empty air, inches from Izuku's chest.
Air.
Izuku brought his palm up, gently tapping the
flat side of Stain’s katana. It wasn't a hard strike, but he channeled a
massive pulse of compressed wind through his palm. The kinetic force sent
violent, harmonic vibrations down the length of the blade.
The katana shattered into a dozen pieces of
useless shrapnel.
Stain landed a few feet away, breathing
heavily, staring at his empty hands. In less than three seconds, without taking
a single step backward, this child had disarmed him completely.
"What... what is your Quirk?" Stain
demanded, drawing two more combat knives from his belt, his mind racing. The
boy was too fast. His defense was impenetrable.
"I told you," Izuku said calmly.
"I am here to restore balance."
Stain ground his teeth. If he couldn't win in
a direct clash, he would use the environment. He leaped backward, melding
perfectly into the pitch-black shadows of the alleyway, completely obscuring
his presence. He moved without making a single sound, scaling the walls like a
spider, preparing to drop on Izuku from a blind spot.
"Midoriya!" Iida cried out weakly.
"Watch out! He's too fast in the dark!"
Izuku let out a quiet sigh.
He didn't look up. He didn't look around. He
closed his eyes and knelt down, placing one palm flat against the bloodstained
asphalt.
Seismic Sense.
The darkness of the alley vanished from his
mind, replaced by a crystalline sonar map. Izuku saw the heartbeat of Native,
fading but steady. He saw the erratic, terrified pulse of Iida. And, scaling
the brick wall twenty feet above him and slightly to his left, he saw every
single micro-vibration of Stain’s boots gripping the mortar.
Stain pushed off the wall, diving toward
Izuku’s back with his knives extended, aiming for a non-lethal slice to the
calf.
Izuku didn't open his eyes. He waited until
Stain was three feet away.
Water.
Izuku swept his arm in a wide arc. He pulled
the latent humidity from the humid night air, combined it with the leaking
water from a nearby broken pipe, and formed a thick, heavy whip of water.
Without looking, Izuku lashed the whip
backward. It caught Stain mid-air, wrapping tightly around the Hero Killer's
wrists. In a fraction of a second, Izuku dropped the temperature of the water.
The whip froze solid into impenetrable rings
of ice, binding Stain’s arms together and locking his knives against his own
chest.
Stain hit the ground with a heavy thud,
sliding to a halt at Izuku’s feet.
The Hero Killer was trapped, but he was far
from broken. With a feral roar, Stain contorted his body, physically
dislocating his own shoulder to slip his bound wrists up over his head. It was
an act of agonizing self-mutilation, fueled entirely by psychotic willpower.
Freeing his face, Stain lunged forward like a
rabid dog, his tongue extending, aiming to lick a drop of blood that had fallen
from his own dislocated shoulder onto the pavement near Izuku's boot. If he
could ingest his own blood, perhaps the Quirk's side effects could create a
temporary adrenaline surge.
It was pathetic. It was desperate.
It was the pinnacle of a broken society.
Izuku opened his eyes. He had seen enough. He
didn't want to break this man's bones. He didn't want to beat him into a pulp.
He needed to break the very foundation of Stain's fanaticism. He needed to show
him the truth.
Izuku took a deep breath.
The Avatar State.
The dark alleyway was instantly bathed in a
blinding, ethereal white light.
It poured from Izuku’s eyes, illuminating the
grim, bloodstained walls with the brilliance of a supernova. His freckles
glowed like constellations. He rose off the ground, floating a foot in the air,
completely untouched by gravity.
A physical shockwave of pure, unadulterated
spiritual energy washed over the alley. The air pressure dropped so violently
that the surrounding windows shattered.
Four distinct rings of elemental power
materialized around Izuku. A ring of churning earth, a ring of flowing water, a
ring of blazing fire, and a ring of howling wind. They orbited him in a
perfect, harmonious sphere, humming with the frequency of the cosmos.
Tenya Iida, still paralyzed on the ground,
stared up at his classmate. His jaw fell open. The blinding light washed over
him, and suddenly, the suffocating, toxic hatred in his heart evaporated,
replaced by a profound, overwhelming sense of awe and insignificance.
Stain froze.
The Hero Killer, a man who had murdered dozens
of Pro Heroes without batting an eye, a man who believed himself to be the sole
arbiter of justice in a corrupt world... stopped.
He looked up at the floating, glowing deity
before him.
The Avatar State did not just project power.
It projected purity. It carried the combined spiritual weight of thousands of
past lives—lives dedicated to true justice, to sacrifice, to the protection of
the innocent. To Stain, whose entire worldview was based on finding a
"True Hero," the presence of the Avatar State was overwhelming.
It was not a man playing dress-up. It was the
physical manifestation of the ideal he had been killing for.
"You..." Stain whispered, his voice
trembling. The feral madness in his eyes shattered like glass, replaced by
absolute, terrified reverence.
The towering, ethereal silhouettes of Aang,
Korra, Kyoshi, and Roku flickered into existence behind Izuku, their glowing
eyes staring down at the murderer with divine judgment.
"Chizome Akaguro," Izuku’s voice
boomed. It wasn't a shout, but the resonance carried the voices of a hundred
Avatars layered over one another. It shook the very marrow in Stain’s bones.
"Your crusade ends here. You have bathed this city in blood. You have
judged others for their imperfections, yet you have allowed yourself to become
a monster."
Izuku slowly descended, the elemental rings
expanding outward, creating a barrier that completely sealed the alleyway. He
floated until he was inches from Stain’s face.
"There is no justice in murder,"
Izuku commanded, the white light burning into Stain's soul. "There is only
balance. And you are a blight upon it. Surrender your weapons. Surrender your
crusade. Or I will strip the violence from your spirit entirely."
Stain’s mouth opened and closed silently. The
sheer, overwhelming aura of the Avatar State crushed his fanaticism into dust.
He had sought a god among men, an idol to worship. And he had found him.
Tears—real, agonizing tears of
realization—spilled from Stain’s manic eyes. He looked at the shattered pieces
of his katana on the ground. He looked at his bound, broken arms. Then, he
looked back up into the divine, glowing eyes of the Avatar.
Stain collapsed onto his knees, bowing his
head until his forehead touched the bloody asphalt.
"I see..." Stain wept, his voice a
broken, raspy sob. "I see it now. The True Savior. The Divine Arbiter.
I... I surrender. Please. Pass your judgment upon me."
The fight was over.
Izuku exhaled softly. The elemental rings
dissipated into mist, dust, and warm air. The blinding white light faded from
his eyes, leaving the alleyway illuminated only by the distant, flickering
fires of Hosu City.
He touched down on the ground, the divine
deity instantly shifting back into a compassionate fifteen-year-old boy.
He knelt beside the weeping Hero Killer,
placing a gentle hand on his shoulder. With a brief, focused application of
Energybending, Izuku locked the biological mechanism of Stain's Quirk Factor,
temporarily disabling his ability to paralyze.
Then, Izuku turned his attention to Iida and
Native.
He walked over to his classmate. Iida was
staring at Izuku, his eyes wide with a mixture of shame, confusion, and profound
reverence.
"Midoriya..." Iida whispered.
"What... who are you?"
Izuku offered a warm, sad smile. He knelt
down, pulling a flask of water from his utility belt. He coated his hands in
the water, the liquid glowing with a soft, bioluminescent blue light.
Water healing.
He placed his hands over the deep slash on
Iida’s arm. The water seeped into the wound, instantly knitting the muscle and
skin back together, washing away the paralyzing effects of Stain’s blood.
"I'm just a friend, Iida," Izuku said
softly as the wound closed perfectly. "A friend who wants you to live a
long, happy life. Your brother wouldn't want this. He wants you to be Ingenium
because you inspire people. Not because you avenge him."
Iida sat up, his paralysis completely gone. He
looked at his healed arm, then at the weeping Hero Killer kneeling in the dirt,
completely broken. The realization of how close he had come to throwing his
life and his soul away hit Iida like a freight train.
He buried his face in his hands and began to
sob openly. Izuku didn't say anything. He just sat beside him, offering a
comforting, silent presence.
A few minutes later, the screeching of tires
echoed from the street. Police cars and an ambulance pulled up to the alleyway,
accompanied by Gran Torino, who had finally arrived on the bullet train, and
Todoroki, who had followed the GPS location Izuku had sent right before he left
the apartment.
Todoroki rushed into the alley, his left side
pre-igniting with flames, expecting a brutal fight.
Instead, he stopped dead in his tracks.
The Hero Killer was on his knees, his hands
tied behind his back with a mundane piece of rope Izuku had found in a
dumpster, weeping quietly. Iida and Native were completely healed, sitting
against the wall. And Izuku Midoriya was leaning against the brickwork, looking
up at the smoke-filled sky with a look of profound exhaustion.
Gran Torino walked up, taking in the scene. He
looked at the shattered katana, the crushed concrete, and the broken spirit of
the most feared serial killer in Japan.
"You didn't even throw a punch, did you,
kid?" Torino asked quietly.
"No, Sensei," Izuku replied, his
eyes tracing the distant, dark energy of the Nomu being rounded up by Endeavor across
the city. "Violence wasn't the answer tonight."
Todoroki walked up beside Izuku, putting away
his flames. "Are you okay, Midoriya?"
"I am fine, Todoroki," Izuku said,
finally pushing himself off the wall. But his gaze remained fixed on the
horizon, staring into a darkness only he could see. "But this was just a
distraction. A test. All For One knows I am here now. He felt the Avatar
State."
Izuku turned to his friends and his mentor,
his green eyes hardened with a resolve forged over ten thousand years.
"The true battle hasn't started yet. And
when it does... it will be for the soul of the world."
Here are some ideas:
