What If Naruto Was Raised by Orochimaru
The subterranean world of Otogakure did not know the concept of dawn. There was no sunrise to bleed warmth through the canopy of trees, no morning birdsong to herald the beginning of a new day. There was only the eternal, suffocating dark, held at bay by the sickly, flickering luminescence of chakra-infused moss and the pale glow of caged fluorescent lamps running along the vaulted ceilings of the stone corridors.
To a thirteen-year-old Naruto Uzumaki, it was the only morning he had ever known, and it was perfect.
He sat cross-legged in the center of a vast, circular training cavern. The floor was made of reinforced granite, scarred and pitted from years of brutal, high-level combat. The air was perpetually damp, carrying the metallic tang of blood, the sharp bite of ozone, and the underlying, omnipresent scent of formaldehyde that bled from the deeper laboratories.
Naruto’s breathing was slow, measured, and practically silent. He wore the traditional garb of the Hidden Sound: sleek, dark grey robes that clung close to his lean, highly conditioned frame, bound at the waist by a thick, purple rope belt tied in an intricate knot in the back. His arms and shins were wrapped in stark white bandages, pulling tight over the hidden compartments where he kept his senbon and kunai.
He was not a child of the sun. His skin was pale, lacking the golden tan of those who lived above ground. His hair, a striking, unruly mop of bright blonde, was a stark contrast to the shadows of his home. It was the only loud thing about him. But it was his face that marked him as something entirely unique. Three faint, whisker-like scars marked each of his cheeks, framing eyes of piercing, icy blue. Right now, those eyes were closed in deep meditation.
He was listening to the heartbeat of the earth. No, not the earth. He was listening to the serpentine vibrations echoing through the stone.
Three hundred meters away, Naruto thought, his mind an icy, calculating void. Footsteps. Two pairs. One light, dragging slightly—Kabuto. The other, silent, deliberate, carrying an immense gravity that distorts the very air around it. Father.
Orochimaru-sama was coming.
Naruto’s eyes snapped open. The icy blue was sharp, focused, devoid of the childish innocence that might have belonged to a boy his age in any of the Great Five Nations. He rose to his feet in a single, fluid motion, his muscles uncoiling like a struck spring.
A moment later, a third presence entered the cavern from the opposite archway.
Kimimaro stepped into the dim light. The Kaguya clan survivor was beautiful in a terrifying, ethereal way, his bone-white hair cascading down his back, the twin crimson dots on his forehead stark against his pale skin. He moved with a dancer's grace, but Naruto knew better. Kimimaro was a walking armory, a weapon forged in blood and polished by Orochimaru’s genius. Just like Naruto.
"Naruto," Kimimaro said, his voice a soft, raspy whisper that carried easily across the vast expanse of the cavern.
"Kimimaro." Naruto’s voice was even, his tone respectful but lacking warmth. In Otogakure, camaraderie was a liability. There was only utility, and the pecking order established by their Master’s favor.
"Lord Orochimaru wishes to observe our progress today," Kimimaro stated, raising a hand to the collar of his pale robes and slowly pulling it down, exposing his collarbone. "He requires a demonstration of your control."
"My control is absolute," Naruto replied smoothly. He shifted his right foot back half a pace, lowering his center of gravity. His hands came up, not in the traditional, rigid forms of Konoha taijutsu, but loose, his fingers slightly curled. The Viper’s Stance. "Are you prepared to be broken today, Kimimaro?"
A faint, bloodless smile touched Kimimaro’s lips. "You may try, little brother."
From the high balcony overlooking the cavern, the shadows parted. Orochimaru stepped up to the railing. Even from fifty yards away, his presence was a physical weight pressing down on the room. He wore his standard pale robes, his long black hair framing a face as pale as death, his golden, slit-pupiled eyes glowing with an unholy intellect. Beside him stood Kabuto Yakushi, adjusting his round glasses, a perpetual, knowing smirk plastered across his face.
"Begin," Orochimaru’s voice slithered down from the balcony. It wasn't loud, yet it resonated in Naruto’s very bones. It was a voice that commanded absolute obedience, a voice that had sung him to sleep with promises of power, a voice that had shaped him from malleable clay into a honed blade.
Naruto didn’t hesitate.
He vanished.
Using the Shunshin no Jutsu (Body Flicker), Naruto crossed the forty-yard distance in a fraction of a second. He appeared directly in front of Kimimaro, his leg already sweeping upward in a devastating high kick aimed at the older boy’s temple.
Kimimaro didn't blink. He raised his left arm, and with a sickening shcktt sound, a thick, calcified bone erupted from his forearm, acting as a natural buckler.
Naruto’s shin connected with the bone with a sound like a cracking whip. The sheer kinetic force cratered the stone beneath Kimimaro’s feet, sending spiderwebs of fractured rock in all directions. But Kimimaro held his ground.
Harder than iron, Naruto analyzed instantly, feeling the jarring shock travel up his leg. He didn't pull back. Instead, using the point of impact as a fulcrum, Naruto twisted his body in mid-air, bringing his other leg around in a horizontal spinning heel kick aimed at Kimimaro’s throat.
Kimimaro ducked underneath the strike with fluid grace, thrusting his open palm forward. A sharp spear of bone jutted from his palm, aiming straight for Naruto’s heart.
Wind Release: Gale Palm!
Naruto clapped his hands together, channeling his chakra with terrifying speed. A violent burst of compressed air exploded from his palms, colliding with Kimimaro’s thrust. The concussive force blasted both combatants backward.
Naruto landed lightly on his feet, skidding backward several meters before his chakra gripped the stone, anchoring him. Before the dust from the shockwave could even settle, Naruto was weaving hand signs. His fingers blurred—Snake, Ram, Monkey, Boar, Horse, Tiger.
"Fire Release: Great Fire Annihilation!"
Naruto inhaled deeply, his chest expanding as he converted his chakra into scorching heat. He expelled a massive, rolling wall of crimson flame that swallowed the entire center of the arena. He hadn't just breathed fire; he had infused it with his natural affinity for Wind chakra, creating a roaring inferno that turned the cavern into an oven. The oxygen in the room was instantly incinerated.
From the balcony, Kabuto pushed his glasses up his nose. "Incredible. The boy’s lung capacity and chakra reserves continue to defy medical logic. To perform a B-rank fire jutsu with such magnitude, and immediately lace it with wind manipulation..."
"He is an Uzumaki, Kabuto," Orochimaru purred, his long tongue darting out to lick his pale lips. "His life force is a raging river. And beneath that river... lies an ocean of power. Let us see if he dips into it today."
Down in the inferno, a storm of pale white was tearing through the flames.
"Dance of the Clematis: Vine!"
Kimimaro emerged from the fire, completely unburned. He had pulled his own spinal column from his back, wielding the flexible, terrifyingly sharp vertebrae like a jagged whip. The bone whip lashed out, extending far beyond its natural length, slicing through the smoke and fire with deadly precision, seeking Naruto’s neck.
Naruto’s eyes narrowed. He didn't dodge. He reached out, his hand glowing with a dense, swirling sphere of highly compressed wind chakra. He caught the tip of the bone whip in his bare hand.
The spinning wind chakra ground against the hardened bone, creating a shrieking sound like metal on metal. Sparks flew as Naruto’s wind manipulation acted as a chainsaw, preventing the bone from wrapping around his wrist and slicing his arm off.
Kimimaro’s eyes widened a fraction of an inch. "Foolish. You cannot break my bones with mere wind."
"I don't need to break it," Naruto said, his voice deadly calm. "I just need to conduct."
Naruto’s chakra shifted. The pure, blue energy swirling in his palm suddenly began to darken, taking on a violent, unstable purple hue.
Deep within his gut, over his navel, the seal pulsed. It was not the elegant Eight Trigrams Seal placed by his biological father—a man Orochimaru had told him was a weak, idealistic fool who had sacrificed his own son for a village that would have hated him. Orochimaru had altered the seal. He had woven a web of dark, oppressive chakra over the original formula, forcing the cage doors ajar. He had taught Naruto not to make peace with the demon inside him, but to bleed it, to siphon its power like a parasite feeding on a host.
Naruto drew upon the Nine-Tails.
But it wasn't the fiery, boiling red chakra of canon. Passing through Orochimaru’s corrupted seal, the fox’s chakra emerged cold, toxic, and highly acidic. A heavy, suffocating aura exploded from Naruto’s body. The air temperature plummeted, yet the remaining fires in the cavern burned with a sickly violet light.
A thick, dark purple shroud of chakra enveloped Naruto. It was heavier than water, dripping off him like viscous ink. His blue eyes bled into a piercing, unnatural crimson, the pupils narrowing into vertical slits.
"Tch," Kimimaro grunted, feeling the toxic chakra travel up his bone whip. Where the purple chakra touched the bone, it began to hiss and dissolve, the acidic properties of the corrupted Kyuubi chakra eating through even the Kaguya clan’s ultimate defense.
Kimimaro immediately severed the connection, detaching the whip and leaping backward, creating distance.
Naruto didn't let him breathe. He dropped to all fours, moving with the terrifying, erratic scuttle of a predatory spider or a striking viper. The purple shroud condensed, forming the vague, shifting shape of a fox’s head around him.
He lunged. The speed was incomprehensible.
Kimimaro barely had time to cross his arms over his chest, employing the Dance of the Larch, causing dozens of sharp bones to protrude from his ribcage, shoulders, and arms, creating a deadly fortress of spikes.
Naruto crashed into him.
The impact was like a meteor strike. The sheer kinetic force of the corrupted chakra blew out the stone walls of the cavern, causing the ceiling to groan and rain dust down upon them.
Naruto ignored the bones piercing his shoulders and arms. He didn't feel the pain. Or rather, he felt it, acknowledged it, and discarded it as irrelevant data. He was a weapon, and weapons did not feel pain. His corrupted hands grasped Kimimaro’s forearms. The purple chakra hissed, burning Kimimaro’s skin, melting through the bone spikes.
Naruto opened his mouth, and a dense, swirling ball of purple and black chakra began to form between his jaws. A miniature Tailed Beast Bomb, destabilized and raw.
"Enough."
The word was spoken softly, but it echoed with the force of a thunderclap inside Naruto’s skull.
Instantly, the purple shroud snapped out of existence. The swirling ball of annihilation in Naruto’s mouth dissolved into harmless vapor. Naruto fell back, gasping, his crimson eyes bleeding back to their icy blue. The seal on his stomach burned with a fierce, branding heat as Orochimaru forced the Kyuubi’s chakra back into its cage through a remote command.
Kimimaro staggered back, coughing, clutching his burned arms. The bone spikes receded into his flesh.
Naruto dropped to one knee, panting heavily, sweat beading on his forehead. He looked down at his own arms. The deep puncture wounds where Kimimaro’s bones had impaled him were already hissing with steam, the residual Uzumaki and Kyuubi vitality knitting the flesh back together at an observable rate.
Orochimaru leapt down from the balcony, drifting to the floor as lightly as a falling leaf. Kabuto followed a moment later.
"Fascinating," Orochimaru murmured, circling Naruto slowly. He looked at the boy not as a human being, but as a priceless work of art, a masterpiece he was still chiseling. "The integration is improving, my son. You maintained your cognitive functions despite drawing on the beast’s toxic reserve. Previously, the acidity would cloud your judgment."
"I focused on the kill, Father," Naruto said, keeping his head bowed respectfully. "The chakra is a tool. I will not let it use me."
Orochimaru reached out, his long, pale fingers gently lifting Naruto’s chin, forcing the boy to look into his golden, serpentine eyes.
"Beautiful," Orochimaru whispered, a genuine, possessive warmth in his voice. "So pragmatic. So perfectly devoid of the crippling sentimentality that plagues the shinobi of the Five Great Nations. You are my greatest achievement, Naruto-kun. More than a vessel. You are the heir to my will."
A small, almost imperceptible shiver of pride ran down Naruto’s spine. His greatest achievement. Those words were the sustenance Naruto lived on. He had no mother to embrace him, no village to cheer for him. He had only the cold, demanding perfection of his Master, and the knowledge that he was loved because he was useful. If he ever ceased to be useful, he would cease to be loved. That fear was the furnace that drove his relentless training.
Orochimaru released his chin and turned his attention to Kimimaro. "Your illness, Kimimaro. It is progressing."
Kimimaro dropped to both knees, pressing his forehead against the cracked stone floor. "Forgive me, Lord Orochimaru. I was slow. The boy’s chakra... it bypassed my density."
"Do not apologize for your failing vessel, Kimimaro," Orochimaru said dismissively, walking past him. "Your time is drawing to a close. But you have served your purpose well. You have sharpened my blade."
Naruto watched Kimimaro’s shoulders tremble slightly. He felt a fleeting, microscopic pang of sympathy. To be discarded by Orochimaru was a fate worse than death. But Naruto crushed the feeling instantly. Sympathy was weakness. Kimimaro’s body was failing; therefore, he was obsolete. That was the natural law of Otogakure. The strong consumed the weak.
"Come, Naruto-kun," Orochimaru beckoned, walking toward the corridor leading to the deeper laboratories. "We must examine your seal. And then... we have a mission to discuss."
Naruto stood immediately, ignoring the drying blood on his robes, and followed his Master into the shadows.
The laboratory was a sensory assault. It was immaculately clean, built of seamless steel and white tile, a stark contrast to the rough-hewn stone of the rest of the base. Huge cylindrical glass vats lined the walls, filled with a bubbling, translucent green fluid. Inside the vats floated twisted amalgamations of flesh—failed experiments, chimera beasts, and the occasional human subject, suspended in eternal stasis.
Naruto paid them no mind. He walked to the center of the room and hopped onto a cold steel examination table, dutifully untying his purple rope belt and pulling open the top of his robes to expose his abdomen.
Kabuto stood nearby, prepping a tray of sterilized surgical instruments, brushes, and vials of specially prepared ink.
"Lie back," Orochimaru instructed.
Naruto lay flat, staring up at the blinding surgical lights.
Orochimaru loomed over him. He bit his own thumb, drawing a bead of blood, and smeared it across the center of Naruto’s stomach. "Release."
Immediately, a complex array of black, swirling kanji appeared on Naruto’s pale skin. It was a masterpiece of Fuinjutsu—the Eight Trigrams Seal. But superimposed over it, bleeding into the black ink like a virus, were jagged, venomous purple lines. The Five-Pronged Seal, modified, inverted, and manipulated by Orochimaru over a decade of painstaking research.
"The corrosive nature of the fox’s chakra is degrading the physical anchors of the seal," Kabuto noted, leaning in with a clipboard, adjusting his glasses. "At the current rate, if he draws upon more than a three-tailed equivalent, the physical flesh of his abdomen may necrotize faster than his Uzumaki lineage can regenerate it."
"A minor hurdle," Orochimaru murmured, his eyes locked on the seal. He took a thin calligraphy brush from Kabuto, dipping it into a vial of thick, glowing purple ink—a mixture of Orochimaru’s own senjutsu-laced blood and crushed chakra-reactive minerals.
Orochimaru began to paint over the jagged purple lines on Naruto’s stomach.
The moment the ink touched his skin, excruciating pain flared through Naruto’s nervous system. It felt like liquid fire was being injected directly into his veins, a burning, tearing sensation that radiated from his navel up into his heart and down into his limbs.
Naruto clenched his jaw. His knuckles turned white as he gripped the edges of the steel table. The metal actually began to bend under his grip. But he did not make a sound. He did not scream. He simply stared blankly at the ceiling, utilizing a psychological dissociation technique Orochimaru had taught him when he was six years old.
Pain is merely a neurological signal, Naruto repeated in his mind. It is data. It is not real. Only the Master's will is real.
"Your resilience is unparalleled, Naruto-kun," Orochimaru said softly, the brush dancing expertly over the boy’s flesh. "I remember the night I found you. The Hidden Leaf Village was burning. The Great Nine-Tailed Demon Fox was tearing the very earth asunder. Your father, the illustrious Fourth Hokage, had just sealed the beast within you, sacrificing his life and his wife’s life for the sake of a village full of ungrateful wretches."
Orochimaru paused, his golden eyes meeting Naruto’s blue ones. "They would have hated you, my son. They would have looked at you and seen only the monster that destroyed their homes. They would have starved you, beaten you, ostracized you. I saved you from that pathetic existence. I brought you into the dark, where true power grows."
"I know, Father," Naruto whispered through gritted teeth. "I am grateful."
And he was. The narrative had been drilled into him since he could comprehend language. Konoha was a village of hypocrites who hid behind the façade of the 'Will of Fire.' They used their shinobi as disposable pawns while preaching peace. Orochimaru, at least, was honest about his brutality. Orochimaru promised immortality, perfection, and the ultimate understanding of all jutsu.
"There," Orochimaru said, pulling the brush away. "The containment parameters have been reinforced. You may now safely draw upon the beast’s chakra up to a threshold of thirty percent without risking cellular collapse. It will be more than enough for your upcoming task."
Naruto sat up, looking at the freshly painted seal. The purple lines throbbed with a rhythmic, malevolent pulse before sinking beneath his skin, vanishing from sight. He pulled his robes closed and retied his belt.
"You mentioned a mission, Lord Orochimaru," Naruto said, hopping down from the table.
"Indeed." Orochimaru turned, his long robes sweeping across the floor as he walked toward a large topographical map pinned to the far wall. Kabuto followed, handing Orochimaru a long wooden pointer.
Naruto approached the map. It detailed the geography of the Five Great Shinobi Nations, with numerous red pins scattered across the Land of Fire.
"The time has come, Naruto-kun," Orochimaru began, his voice dripping with malice and anticipation. "For years, we have gathered our strength in the shadows. We have built Otogakure. We have allied ourselves with Sunagakure, manipulating the foolish Kazekage. Now, the stage is set for the Konoha Crush."
Naruto’s eyes widened slightly. "We are destroying the Leaf Village?"
"We are burning it to its foundations," Orochimaru corrected, a twisted smile stretching across his pale face. "I intend to teach my old sensei, the Third Hokage, the price of his sentimentality. But before the invasion begins in earnest, I have a specific, delicate task for you. A task only you can perform."
Orochimaru tapped the pointer on a specific location within the Land of Fire. Konohagakure.
"Next month, Konoha will host the Chunin Exams," Orochimaru explained. "Genin from all over the continent will gather to compete. It is the perfect smokescreen. Kabuto will be infiltrating as a Konoha genin, as he has done before, to gather intelligence. But you, Naruto... you will infiltrate as a participant from the Hidden Sound."
Naruto remained silent, analyzing the parameters. "As myself?"
"Heavens, no," Kabuto interjected with a chuckle. "Your face is far too recognizable to anyone who knew the Fourth Hokage. Furthermore, the remnant chakra of the Nine-Tails might trigger Konoha’s sensory barriers if left unmasked."
Orochimaru nodded. "You will be under a deep-layered genjutsu and a physical transformation seal. You will go by the name 'Menma.' You will alter your fighting style. No raw Nine-Tails chakra. No Uzumaki sealing chains. Only your Wind release and standard Sound techniques."
"Understood," Naruto said. "What are my objectives?"
Orochimaru’s eyes narrowed into terrifying, predatory slits. "You have two primary objectives. First: you will navigate the village during your downtime and plant a series of specialized explosive tags at key structural foundations around the village walls and the Hokage Monument. Kabuto will provide you with the coordinates."
Naruto nodded. Sabotage. Simple enough.
"And the second objective?"
Orochimaru’s tongue darted out again. "You will seek out a specific Genin team. Team 7. More specifically, you will test a boy named Sasuke Uchiha."
Naruto recognized the name. The Uchiha clan. The wielders of the Sharingan. Orochimaru had spoken of the Dojutsu with an almost religious reverence. It was the one piece of the puzzle Orochimaru obsessed over—the eyes that could read all jutsu, the bloodline that could control the Nine-Tails.
"You wish for me to kill him?" Naruto asked, his voice entirely devoid of emotion.
"No," Orochimaru commanded sharply. "Do not kill him. Break him. Push him to his absolute limits. I need to see the depths of his hatred, the strength of his Sharingan. I need to know if the vessel is ripe."
A strange, cold feeling settled in Naruto’s stomach. Vessel. He knew what that meant. Orochimaru’s current body was failing. The Living Corpse Reincarnation jutsu required a new host. Naruto had always assumed, though it was never spoken aloud, that he was the ultimate vessel. Why else would Orochimaru train him so relentlessly? Why else would he perfectly calibrate his seal?
To hear Orochimaru speak of another boy—an Uchiha—as the 'ripe vessel' caused a microscopic fracture in Naruto’s iron-clad psyche. A flicker of something entirely alien to him.
Jealousy? No. Insecurity.
If Sasuke Uchiha was the vessel, what was Naruto? Just a weapon? Just a battery for the Nine-Tails?
"Are you hesitating, Naruto-kun?" Orochimaru’s voice cut through his thoughts, sharp and dangerously soft.
"No, Father," Naruto lied smoothly, his face a perfectly constructed mask of obedience. "I will test the Uchiha. I will show him the disparity between a pampered village ninja and a true shinobi of the Sound."
Orochimaru smiled, satisfied. "Excellent. You will be placed on a three-man team with Dosu Kinuta and Zaku Abumi. They are expendable pawns. Use them as you see fit to pass the initial phases, but your true mission takes precedence over the exams."
Kabuto stepped forward, handing Naruto a small, sealed scroll. "Your fake registry papers. Your transformation seal tags. And the explosive notes. Memorize the map, then destroy it."
Naruto took the scroll, gripping it tightly in his right hand.
"You leave in three days," Orochimaru said, turning his back on Naruto to stare at the map. "Do not fail me, Naruto. Show the Hidden Leaf the ghost of their precious Hokage. Show them what I have forged from their discarded scraps."
"I am your will, Orochimaru-sama," Naruto bowed deeply from the waist.
He turned and walked out of the laboratory, his footsteps making no sound on the sterile tiles.
Later that cycle, in the deep silence of his personal quarters, Naruto prepared.
His room was spartan. A simple futon on the floor, a desk for transcribing jutsu formulas, and a small shrine in the corner. The shrine did not hold pictures of family or deities. It held a single, beautifully crafted kunai made of black chakra metal, a gift from Orochimaru upon Naruto’s first confirmed kill at age nine.
Naruto sat cross-legged on the futon, disassembling and cleaning his weapons. He moved with mechanical precision, his hands acting on years of muscle memory. Oiling the blades, checking the tension on his wire spools, sorting his explosive tags by blast radius.
Konohagakure, he thought, sliding a freshly sharpened kunai into its thigh holster.
The Hidden Leaf. His birthplace.
He felt no loyalty to it. How could he? His entire worldview had been constructed by the man who wished to destroy it. To Naruto, Konoha was an abstract concept—a target. A congregation of weak, soft individuals who played at being soldiers.
Yet, as he stared at the small seal tag Kabuto had given him—the tag that would hide his bright blonde hair, turning it a dull, unremarkable brown, and mask his whisker scars—a quiet, insistent voice echoed in the back of his mind.
It wasn't his voice. It was deep, resonant, and dripping with ancient malice.
“He is replacing you, little kit.”
Naruto’s hands stopped moving. He closed his eyes and focused inward.
Deep within his subconscious mind, in a mental landscape crafted by his own psyche, Naruto stood before the cage. But it wasn't the flooded sewer of canon. Orochimaru’s influence had twisted the mindscape.
Naruto found himself standing on a rocky precipice overlooking a vast, bubbling swamp of toxic purple venom. The sky above was a sickly, bruised magenta, heavy with oppressive, suffocating clouds.
Rising from the center of the toxic swamp was a massive structure of jagged, black iron bars, shaped like a ribcage. The bars were wrapped in thick, pulsating purple chains—the manifestation of Orochimaru’s altered seal.
Behind the bars, in the suffocating darkness, two massive, blood-red eyes slowly opened, each the size of a small house. The vertical slits focused on the tiny, blonde boy standing on the precipice.
"You play the obedient dog perfectly," the Nine-Tails rumbled, its voice causing the toxic swamp to ripple and froth. "You let the snake inject his venom into your veins, let him twist the cage your father built, and for what? A pat on the head?"
"Be silent, Fox," Naruto commanded, his mental avatar projecting absolute calm. "You are merely a source of chakra. Your opinions are irrelevant."
A deep, rumbling laugh shook the mindscape, a sound like grinding tectonic plates.
"A source of chakra? Is that what the snake tells you? He lies to you, child. He does not care for your Uzumaki blood. He does not care for your loyalty. He cares only for the fact that my power resides within you. And now, he looks to an Uchiha. He looks to the Sharingan."
A massive, clawed paw emerged from the shadows, striking the iron bars. The purple chains hissed and sparked, sending a shock of pain through Naruto’s real body in the physical world, though his mental projection didn't flinch.
"The Sharingan can control me," the Fox sneered, leaning closer to the bars, revealing a mouth full of jagged, mountain-sized teeth. "If the snake acquires the Uchiha boy's body, he will no longer need you to siphon my power. He will simply rip me from your gut, take my power for himself, and leave your hollowed-out corpse to rot in his laboratories."
"He is my Father," Naruto said, though his voice lacked the absolute, fanatical conviction it held in the waking world.
"He is a parasite!" the Fox roared. "And you are a fool. Go to the Leaf Village, little weapon. Go and see the world the snake hid from you. But mark my words... when the snake finally bares his fangs to strike at your throat, I will not save you. I will laugh as you bleed."
Naruto severed the mental connection.
He opened his eyes in his spartan room, gasping for a single breath of air. His heart was beating slightly faster than normal. He reached down, his fingers brushing the fabric of his robes over the seal on his stomach.
The Fox was a demon. Demons lied. That was their nature. They sought to sow discord and weakness.
Orochimaru was his master, his savior, his father. Orochimaru’s logic was flawless. The Uchiha was merely a tool, just like Kimimaro, just like Kabuto. Naruto was the heir.
I will not fail, Naruto thought, his icy blue eyes hardening into diamonds in the dim light of his room. I will infiltrate Konoha. I will break Sasuke Uchiha. I will prove my absolute superiority. I will prove that I am indispensable.
He picked up the transformation seal. With a practiced motion, he slapped the paper tag against his forehead.
A puff of white smoke engulfed him.
When it cleared, Naruto Uzumaki was gone. In his place stood "Menma" of the Hidden Sound. His striking blonde hair had shifted to a dull, muted brown, falling flat across his forehead. His skin had lost its pale, vampiric quality, taking on a slightly more average, sun-touched tone. And most importantly, the three whisker marks on his cheeks—the hallmark of his jinchuriki status—were completely erased. Only his eyes remained the same, piercing and cold.
He stood up, walking to the small mirror hanging on the wall. He stared at the stranger’s face reflecting back at him. It felt wrong. It felt weak. But it was necessary.
He pulled a dark grey hood up over his head, casting his face in shadow. He grabbed his weapons pouch, strapping it to his waist, and turned his back on the mirror.
It was time to leave the viper's den. It was time to show the world above what had been growing in the dark.
As Naruto walked out of his quarters and into the endless tunnels of Otogakure, a small, white snake slithered out from a crack in the stonework. It raised its head, watching him pass, its golden eyes glinting in the dark.
The perfect weapon had been unsheathed. And it was pointed straight at the heart of the Leaf.
The sun was an oppressive, blinding tyrant.
That was Naruto’s first thought as he stood before the massive, towering green gates of Konohagakure. He had lived his entire life in the subterranean gloom of Otogakure, where light was a localized, utilitarian thing, generated by chakra moss or flickering bulbs. Here, the light was everywhere. It painted the world in garish, loud colors. It warmed the skin, it cast sharp shadows, and it made Naruto’s icy blue eyes narrow in severe irritation.
He pulled the hood of his dark grey cloak down a fraction of an inch, letting the shadow drape over the upper half of his face. Underneath the specialized transformation seal applied to his forehead, he was "Menma." His vibrant, untamable blonde hair was flattened into a dull, mousy brown. His striking whisker scars were gone, replaced by smooth, unremarkable skin. To the casual observer, he was merely another background genin, a forgettable face in a sea of aspiring shinobi.
"Intimidating, isn't it?"
The voice belonged to Zaku Abumi, who stood to Naruto's right. The boy’s spiky black hair and arrogant smirk grated on Naruto’s nerves. Zaku was loud, brash, and entirely too confident in the air tubes implanted in his arms. To Naruto's left stood Dosu Kinuta, hunched over, his face entirely obscured by bandages save for his single visible eye. Dosu was quieter, smarter, but still ultimately a pawn.
"It is a target," Naruto replied, his voice a flat, synthesized baritone, altered slightly by the Henge to sound older and rougher. "Nothing more. Focus on the objective, Zaku, or I will remove your vocal cords before we cross the threshold."
Zaku scowled, opening his mouth to retort, but Dosu held up a wrapped hand. "Peace, Zaku. Menma is right. We are in enemy territory. Keep your ego in check."
Naruto ignored them both, his eyes tracking the two Konoha chunin guarding the gate. Izumo and Kotetsu. They looked bored, casually flipping through registration papers as the influx of foreign genin filed into the village. They were relaxed. Careless.
Weak, Naruto analyzed instantly. A frontal assault would kill them both in 1.4 seconds. A senbon to the carotid, a wind-laced kunai to the spine. They rely entirely on the barrier surrounding the village to warn them of threats. They have forgotten what it means to be hunted.
"Next," Izumo called out, not even looking up from his clipboard.
Naruto stepped forward, extending his forged paperwork. Izumo took it, his eyes skimming the document. "Hidden Sound Village, huh? A new one. Menma, Zaku, Dosu. Alright. Welcome to Konoha. Enjoy your stay, but don't cause trouble outside the exam arenas."
Naruto offered a slight, deeply deferential bow—a mockery of respect. "Thank you, sir. We are honored to participate."
As they walked past the gates and into the village proper, the sensory overload hit Naruto like a physical blow. Otogakure smelled of ozone, blood, damp stone, and formaldehyde. Konoha smelled of... life. Roasting pork from food stands, blooming cherry blossoms, cheap perfumes, sweat, pine needles, and baked bread. The streets were filled with civilians laughing, children running, merchants hawking their wares.
It made Naruto’s skin crawl.
It was a lie. All of it. A fragile, pathetic illusion of peace built on a foundation of corpses. Orochimaru had taught him the truth of the world. Peace was merely the intermission between wars, a time when the strong grew complacent and the weak bred.
"Look at this place," Zaku sneered, kicking a stray pebble. "They look like sheep."
"They are sheep," Dosu murmured, his eye darting from rooftop to rooftop, noting the ANBU patrols. "But the shepherds have sharp teeth. Do not underestimate the Leaf shinobi, Zaku."
"I have business to attend to," Naruto said abruptly, coming to a halt near a busy intersection. "We have three days before the first phase of the exams. Secure lodging. I will find you when it is time."
Before either of his 'teammates' could object, Naruto utilized the Shunshin no Jutsu. To the civilians around them, it was just a gust of wind tossing up a few stray leaves. In a fraction of a second, Naruto was gone, reappearing on the shaded roof of a nearby tailor's shop.
He spent the next two days as a ghost.
His primary mission was sabotage. Orochimaru had provided him with twelve specialized, timed explosive tags. These were not standard paper bombs; they were densely packed arrays of Fuinjutsu, designed to shatter reinforced stone and sever structural chakra nodes.
Naruto moved through Konoha with the silent, fluid grace of a serpent. He analyzed the patrol routes of the Konoha Military Police Force and the ANBU. He mapped their blind spots. At night, when the village finally slept, he planted the charges. Four at the foundational pillars of the eastern wall. Three beneath the primary aqueduct. Two near the shinobi academy.
On the second night, he approached his final target: the Hokage Monument.
Scaling the sheer rock face under the cover of a moonless sky, Naruto moved silently toward the massive carved faces. He stopped on the nose of the Fourth Hokage, Minato Namikaze.
Naruto crouched there, the cold wind whipping his brown disguise-hair around his face. He looked down at the village sprawling beneath him. He knew the history. He knew that the man whose face he stood upon was his biological father. Orochimaru had never hidden it from him; in fact, he had used it as a psychological weapon to forge Naruto’s hatred.
He threw you away, Orochimaru’s silky voice echoed in his memory. He chose this pathetic village over you. He turned his own son into a weapon, a sacrificial lamb, because he lacked the strength to defeat the beast himself.
Naruto pressed his hand flat against the cold stone of Minato’s carved forehead. He felt no connection. No grief. Only a cold, clinical disdain.
"You were weak," Naruto whispered to the stone.
He reached into his pouch, withdrawing one of the heavy explosive tags, and slapped it against the bridge of the monument's nose, channeling a tiny pulse of chakra to affix it permanently to the rock.
As the chakra left his fingertips, something bizarre happened.
The seal on Naruto's stomach—the corrupted Eight Trigrams Seal—suddenly flared with agonizing heat. Naruto hissed, clutching his abdomen, dropping to one knee. A wave of intense, blinding pressure washed over him. It wasn't the Nine-Tails trying to break out. It was a resonance.
The latent chakra in the stone, imbued by the villagers' worship and the remnants of the Fourth Hokage's own lingering chakra from the night of the sealing, was reacting to the Uzumaki blood in Naruto's veins. For a split second, the transformation seal on Naruto's forehead sparked and smoked. A single lock of brown hair flickered, bleeding into a brilliant, luminescent gold before snapping back to brown.
Naruto gritted his teeth, forcibly cutting off his chakra flow and locking down his internal coils. The pain subsided, leaving him panting, a cold sweat breaking out on his neck.
What was that? he thought, his analytical mind racing. Environmental chakra resonance? The seal is unstable in the presence of my father's residual energy. I must monitor my output. If I draw too heavily on my reserves while in this village, the Henge might shatter.
He stood up, adjusting his cloak. The charges were set. The trap was laid for the Konoha Crush. Now, it was time for his secondary objective.
It was time to find Sasuke Uchiha.
The first phase of the Chunin Exams—the written test proctored by Ibiki Morino—had been a masterclass in psychological manipulation. At least, that’s what the Konoha genin seemed to think. To Naruto, it was painfully rudimentary.
Ibiki had tried to use fear, intimidation, and the threat of eternal failure to break the genin. Naruto had sat in the back row, his face a blank mask, completely immune. In Otogakure, failure didn't mean you remained a genin forever; failure meant Orochimaru placed you on a vivisection table to see why your nervous system was inadequate. Ibiki’s scars and threats were nothing compared to the cold, golden eyes of the Snake Sannin.
Naruto had gathered the information using a subtle application of Wind chakra to carry the whispers and scratchings of pencils to his ears, completely bypassing the need for visual cheating. He passed without breaking a sweat, flanked by a nervous Zaku and a calculating Dosu.
Now, they stood before the imposing chain-link fence of Training Ground 44. The Forest of Death.
Anko Mitarashi, the proctor, stood before the assembled genin, a wild, sadistic grin on her face. Naruto analyzed her immediately. Loud. Brash. Compensating for underlying trauma. Her chakra signature carries a faint, distinct taint. Orochimaru's curse mark. He noted it away for later.
"This is it, maggots!" Anko shouted, waving a consent form. "Sign these, or don't complain when they find your bodies in pieces! You have five days to cross the forest, secure both a Heaven and Earth scroll, and reach the tower in the center. Any questions? No? Good!"
Naruto’s team was handed a Heaven Scroll. Zaku snatched it, a feral grin on his face. "This is going to be a slaughter."
"Give it to me," Naruto commanded softly.
Zaku bristled. "Why should you hold it, Menma? I can protect—"
Naruto didn't yell. He didn't posture. He simply shifted his icy blue eyes to meet Zaku’s, allowing a fraction of his killer intent—honed in the lightless pits of Oto—to leak out. The air between them dropped ten degrees.
Zaku choked on his own breath, his face going pale. His hand trembled as he handed the scroll to Naruto. Naruto took it, unsealing a compartment in his bandages and slipping it inside.
"We move as a unit," Naruto instructed, his voice a low, commanding hum. "But I lead. You engage only when I permit. Our objective is not just to pass. It is to hunt."
The gates slammed open.
The forest was a drastic shift from the village. The canopy was so thick it blocked out the sun, casting the jungle in a perpetual, damp twilight. The air was thick with the scent of rot, venom, and ancient, overgrown flora. Giant centipedes scuttled up the massive tree trunks, and the distant screams of less fortunate genin echoed through the foliage.
For Zaku and Dosu, it was an intimidating environment. For Naruto, it felt like home.
They moved quickly through the upper branches. Naruto’s senses were extended to their maximum. He wasn't looking for a scroll; they could take an Earth scroll from anyone. He was looking for a specific chakra signature. Orochimaru had provided him with a detailed profile of Sasuke Uchiha. Fire affinity, lightning potential, dark, brooding chakra, accompanied by the distinct, slightly wild signature of an Inuzuka and the delicate, precise control of a medic-in-training.
"Movement," Dosu whispered, coming to a halt on a thick branch. "Three hundred meters, two o'clock. Amegakure genin. They have an Earth scroll."
"Kill them," Naruto said dismissively, not even slowing his pace. "Take the scroll. Meet me at Sector B-4 in two hours."
Zaku grinned, his confidence returning. "You're going off on your own? Fine by me. Let's go, Dosu."
Naruto vanished, leaving the two Oto genin to their slaughter. He moved deeper into the forest, his feet making absolutely zero sound against the bark. He closed his eyes briefly, expanding his sensory range, filtering out the ambient noise of the giant beasts and the terrified screams.
There.
A mile away. Three distinct signatures. One was frantic, moving erratically—a dog. One was steady, brimming with nervous energy—the pink-haired girl, Sakura. And the third...
Naruto’s eyes snapped open. The third signature was a deep, swirling well of dark, pressurized chakra. It felt like a dormant volcano, rigid and cold on the outside, but roiling with intense heat and suppressed fury on the inside.
Sasuke Uchiha.
Naruto altered his trajectory, accelerating. He drew no weapons. He wove no hand signs. He simply became a shadow, hunting his prey.
Team 7 was on edge.
Sasuke Uchiha stood back-to-back with Sakura Haruno and Kiba Inuzuka, a kunai gripped tightly in his hand. They were in a small clearing, surrounded by towering roots that looked like the grasping fingers of a dead giant.
Akamaru, perched on Kiba’s head, was whimpering uncontrollably, his fur standing entirely on end.
"What is it, boy?" Kiba hissed, looking frantically at the dense foliage. "Sasuke, he smells something. Something bad. It's not a normal animal. It smells like... like death and ozone."
"Keep your guard up," Sasuke ordered, his dark eyes scanning the shadows. He reached up, touching his own forehead, channeling chakra to his eyes. Sharingan. The world snapped into terrifying clarity, awash in the red hue of his bloodline limit. Two tomoe spun slowly in each iris. "I don't see anything. Sakura, watch our six."
"R-right," Sakura stammered, holding a kunai with trembling hands.
"You rely too much on your eyes, Uchiha."
The voice didn't come from the trees. It came from directly above them.
Sasuke whipped his head up, his Sharingan tracking the blur of movement. A figure in a dark grey cloak was dropping from the canopy, utterly silent, completely devoid of killer intent until the very last millisecond.
Fast! Sasuke thought, barely having time to cross his arms.
Naruto didn't use a weapon. As he fell, he spun, driving his heel down in an axe kick aimed directly at Sasuke’s skull.
Sasuke leaped backward, narrowly avoiding the strike. Naruto’s heel connected with the solid earth. The impact sounded like an exploding mortar shell. The ground cratered instantly, sending a shockwave of displaced dirt and shattered roots flying in all directions. Sakura shrieked as she was blown off her feet. Kiba dug his claws into the dirt to hold his ground.
When the dust cleared, Naruto stood slowly, rising from the crater. He brushed a speck of dirt from his cloak, his expression completely blank beneath his brown bangs.
"Who the hell are you?!" Kiba barked, dropping onto all fours, his canines elongating. "Sound Village? You want our scroll?"
"I have no interest in your scroll, dog," Naruto said, his altered voice echoing in the clearing. He locked his icy eyes on Sasuke. "My interest lies with the last Uchiha. I was told you were a prodigy. I am here to see if the rumors are true, or if your clan was exterminated because they were as weak as you look."
Sasuke’s eyes flared with immediate, uncontrollable rage. The two tomoe in his Sharingan spun violently. "You're going to regret saying that."
"Actions, Uchiha. Not words," Naruto provoked.
Sasuke charged. He was fast, incredibly fast for a genin. He utilized the Interceptor Fist, throwing a flurry of high-speed punches and kicks, his Sharingan predicting Naruto’s defensive shifts.
Naruto didn't attack. He simply evaded. He moved with a horrifying, serpentine fluidity, his body bending and swaying at impossible angles. Sasuke’s fist clipped his cheek; Naruto rolled with the momentum, spinning on his heel and deflecting Sasuke’s follow-up kick with the back of his hand.
He's reading my movements, Sasuke realized, gritting his teeth. But he's not even looking at my eyes. How is he doing this?
Naruto was using micro-currents of wind chakra, feeling the displacement of air before Sasuke’s strikes even landed. It was a technique Orochimaru had drilled into him blindfolded.
"Is this the extent of the Sharingan?" Naruto mocked softly, dodging a kunai swipe. "It grants you kinetic vision, but your body lacks the speed to capitalize on it. You can see my strikes, but you cannot stop them."
Naruto stopped dodging. As Sasuke threw a heavy right hook, Naruto stepped into the guard. He parried the arm outward, stepping into Sasuke's personal space, and drove a palm strike directly into Sasuke’s sternum.
Wind Release: Gale Palm.
It wasn't a full-powered blast, just enough localized concussive force to rupture the air in Sasuke's lungs. Sasuke gagged, his eyes bugging out, as he was launched backward, crashing through a thick bush.
"Sasuke!" Sakura screamed, throwing three shuriken at Naruto.
Naruto didn't even look at her. He flicked his wrist, sending a tiny burst of wind chakra that deflected the shuriken effortlessly into the trees.
"Fang Over Fang!"
Kiba and a transformed Akamaru became twin human-sized drills, spinning at terrifying speeds, tearing up the earth as they converged on Naruto from both sides.
"Annoying," Naruto muttered. He rapidly wove three hand signs. Snake, Hare, Bird.
"Wind Release: Great Breakthrough."
Naruto exhaled a localized, hyper-compressed hurricane. The sheer force of the wind hit Kiba and Akamaru like a solid wall of iron. Their spinning attack was instantly neutralized, and they were blown backward, crashing violently against the trunk of a massive tree. They slumped to the ground, unconscious.
Sakura froze, her knees knocking together. She was out of her depth. This wasn't a genin. This was a monster.
Naruto ignored her completely, walking slowly toward the bushes where Sasuke had landed.
Sasuke emerged, wiping a trail of blood from his mouth. His clothes were torn, and he was breathing heavily, but his Sharingan was blazing with a hateful, desperate intensity. He began weaving hand signs at blinding speed.
Horse, Tiger, Boar, Ram, Rat, Dog, Horse, Bird, Ox, Ram, Tiger, Snake.
"Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique!"
Sasuke inhaled deeply and blew a massive, roaring sphere of fire that illuminated the dark forest, incinerating everything in its path as it barreled toward Naruto.
Naruto stood still. A faint, almost imperceptible smirk touched his lips. Fire. Good. Let us see how it burns.
Instead of dodging, Naruto held up his right hand. He didn't weave signs. He simply condensed his chakra, applying advanced shape and nature manipulation. A dense, rapidly spinning sphere of wind formed in his palm. It shrieked like a jet engine, the air tearing itself apart around his fingers. The Rasengan. Or rather, a proto-version of it, infused with his wind nature.
Naruto thrust his hand forward, plunging the spinning sphere of wind directly into the incoming fireball.
The collision was spectacular. Wind feeds fire, but wind compressed to this degree simply sheared the flames apart. The fireball was split cleanly in two, rushing harmlessly past Naruto on either side, igniting the trees behind him, leaving him entirely untouched in the center of the inferno.
Sasuke stared in absolute disbelief, his Sharingan desperately trying to comprehend the jutsu. "What... what was that?"
Naruto dispelled the wind sphere, the shrieking sound dying down. "That was control, Uchiha. Something you severely lack."
Naruto closed the distance in a blur. Sasuke tried to react, but he was exhausted. Naruto grabbed Sasuke by the throat, lifting him completely off the ground. Sasuke choked, his hands scrabbling uselessly at Naruto’s iron grip.
Naruto stared deeply into the desperate, spinning red eyes of his opponent. He searched for the 'ripe vessel' Orochimaru had spoken of. He saw potential, yes. He saw hatred. But he also saw fear.
"You are weak," Naruto whispered coldly, tightening his grip. "You rely on the ghosts of your ancestors residing in your eyes. You have no true power of your own. You are not a vessel. You are a cracked cup."
Sasuke gurgled, his vision beginning to swim.
But as Naruto held Sasuke, channeling his chakra to assert dominance, the environment reacted again.
The Forest of Death was steeped in history. The massive trees were cultivated by the First Hokage, Hashirama Senju. The earth here was saturated with the lingering, ancient chakra of Konoha’s founders. And deep within Naruto’s gut, the Kyuubi—who remembered the agonizing control of the Sharingan and the oppressive wood of the First Hokage—stirred angrily.
The seal flared, not from the Kyuubi trying to escape, but from the absolute clash of hostile energies. Orochimaru's venomous purple seal violently rejected the ambient Senju chakra in the air and the Uchiha chakra radiating from Sasuke.
Naruto gasped, his eyes going wide. It felt like a serrated blade had just been dragged across his stomach. His chakra control slipped for exactly one tenth of a second.
It was enough.
The transformation seal on his forehead overloaded. The paper tag sparked, hissed, and dissolved into ash. The genjutsu layered over it shattered like glass.
In an instant, the dull brown hair vanished, replaced by a shock of brilliant, untamed, sun-kissed blonde. The smooth skin of his cheeks dissolved, revealing the three distinct, deep whisker marks on either side of his face.
Sasuke, still held by the throat, stared at the sudden transformation. His Sharingan recorded every detail. The blonde hair. The blue eyes that were now flashing dangerously. The whisker marks.
"Who... are... you?" Sasuke choked out, his eyes wide with shock.
Naruto realized his mistake instantly. Panic, a rare and foreign emotion, flared in his chest. He threw Sasuke to the ground.
Sasuke gasped for air, coughing violently, but his red eyes remained fixed on Naruto. Sakura, trembling near the edge of the clearing, covered her mouth, her eyes wide as she saw the face of the boy who looked like a ghost from a history book.
I compromised the mission, Naruto thought, his mind racing at a million miles an hour. I lost control. Father will be furious.
He needed to fix this. He reached into his pouch, pulling out a kunai. If he killed them, there would be no witnesses. The thought was cold, entirely pragmatic.
But before he could step forward to finish the Uchiha, a massive, terrifying spike of chakra erupted from the trees a mile away. It was a dark, malevolent presence, so suffocating that it caused the very air to turn heavy and cold.
Naruto recognized it instantly. It was the absolute, unrestrained bloodlust of Orochimaru.
Father is here? Naruto thought, stunned. Why is he projecting his presence so openly? He is engaging someone.
The plan was fracturing. If Orochimaru was drawing attention, ANBU would swarm the forest within minutes. The assassination of Team 7 would take too long, and leaving corpses with unique wind-lacerations would point directly back to him.
Naruto glared down at the gasping Sasuke. "Consider yourself fortunate, Uchiha. The true exam hasn't even begun."
Naruto turned, pulling his hood up tight over his head to conceal his blonde hair, and utilized the Shunshin, vanishing into the burning foliage, leaving Team 7 broken and terrified in his wake.
High above the village, in the secure confines of the Hokage Tower, the air was thick with tension.
Hiruzen Sarutobi, the Third Hokage, sat at his desk, his face lined with the heavy burden of his office. He puffed slowly on his pipe, exhaling a plume of white smoke.
Standing before him was Kakashi Hatake, his visible eye narrowed, his posture tense. Beside Kakashi stood a man who had only returned to the village three hours ago. Jiraiya, the Toad Sage, his massive mane of white hair framing a face that was usually jovial, but was currently carved from stone.
In the center of the desk sat a large, shimmering crystal ball. The Telescope Technique. Hiruzen used it to monitor the exams, maintaining security.
The ball was currently focused on Sector 14 of the Forest of Death. It had captured the entire altercation between Team 7 and the mysterious Sound Genin named Menma.
The room was deathly silent. They had watched the brutal, surgical dismantling of Konoha’s most promising rookie team. They had watched the terrifying wind jutsu, the physical dominance, the sheer, cold-blooded efficiency of the Oto boy.
And then, they had seen the disguise fall.
The crystal ball had zoomed in clearly on the boy’s face when the seal shattered. The bright blonde hair. The piercing blue eyes. The three distinct whisker marks on his cheeks.
Kakashi’s single eye was wide, his breathing shallow. His hands, usually buried casually in his pockets, were clenched into fists so tight his knuckles were white. "Lord Third..." Kakashi whispered, his voice cracking with an emotion he hadn't felt in over a decade. "That... that's impossible. He died. We thought he died in the attack."
Hiruzen closed his eyes, an immense, crushing weight settling on his old shoulders. The pipe trembled in his mouth. "We searched the rubble for weeks. There was no body. Only blood. I... I had hoped he perished peacefully in the blast."
Jiraiya stepped forward, placing a heavy, calloused hand on the mahogany desk. He leaned in, his eyes locked on the crystal ball, watching the empty, burning clearing where the boy had just stood. The Toad Sage’s face was twisted in a mixture of profound grief and boiling, terrifying rage.
He had seen the face of his godson. The boy he had sworn to protect, but had failed to find.
But it wasn't just the face. Jiraiya was a master of Fuinjutsu. Even through the crystal ball, in that brief second when the disguise failed, he had seen the way the chakra violently rejected the environment. He recognized the twisted, venomous purple hue of the chakra that bled from the boy’s skin.
"That bastard," Jiraiya growled, his voice a low, rumbling earthquake that shook the glass windows of the office. "That sick, twisted bastard."
"Jiraiya..." Hiruzen warned softly.
"He took him, Sensei," Jiraiya said, looking up at Hiruzen, his eyes blazing with an unprecedented fury. "Orochimaru didn't just attack the village that night. He used the Nine-Tails as a distraction. He snuck into the safehouse. He took Minato and Kushina's son."
Kakashi swallowed hard. "Naruto. He raised Naruto in the Sound."
"He didn't just raise him," Jiraiya said, his fists clenching, remembering the cold, dead eyes of the boy in the crystal ball. "He turned him into a weapon. The way he fought... the lack of hesitation... he's a killer, Kakashi. Orochimaru has had him for thirteen years."
"Then we must apprehend him immediately," Kakashi stated, turning toward the door, his Sharingan eye beginning to throb under his headband. "If he is Minato-sensei's son, we have to bring him home."
"No!" Hiruzen barked, slamming his hand on the desk.
Kakashi stopped, looking back in shock. "Lord Third?"
"Did you not see the way he easily incapacitated your team, Kakashi?" Hiruzen said, his voice heavy with sorrow. "He is not a civilian child needing rescue. He is an elite operative of Otogakure. Furthermore, he is the Jinchuriki of the Nine-Tails. If we corner him, if we attempt to take him by force, we risk him unleashing the beast inside the village walls again."
"So we do nothing?!" Jiraiya yelled. "We let Orochimaru use Minato's legacy as a pawn?"
"We observe," Hiruzen corrected firmly. "Orochimaru sent him here for a reason. Infiltrating him as a genin is a calculated move. If we reveal that we know his identity, we tip our hand to Orochimaru. We must tread carefully."
Jiraiya stared at his old teacher for a long, tense moment. Then, he turned sharply on his heel. "Fine. You observe, Sensei. I am going into that forest."
"Jiraiya, you cannot interfere with the exams!"
"I'm not going to interfere with the exams," Jiraiya said coldly over his shoulder as he reached the door. "I'm going to track down a lost toad. I need to see him with my own eyes. I need to see what Orochimaru has done to the seal."
The door slammed shut, leaving Kakashi and Hiruzen in the heavy, oppressive silence of the office.
Hiruzen looked back down at the crystal ball, now showing only smoke and shattered trees. A single tear escaped the old Hokage's eye, tracing a line down his wrinkled cheek.
"Forgive me, Minato," Hiruzen whispered to the empty room. "I failed you both."
Deep in the Forest of Death, the Viper’s heir was running through the canopy, entirely unaware that the ghosts of his past had just picked up his trail.
The air in the subterranean corridors of the Chunin Exam preliminary arena was cool, stagnant, and tasted faintly of dust and oxidized copper. Above, through meters of solid concrete and steel grating, the muffled roar of the crowd and the sharp concussions of low-level jutsu clashes echoed like distant thunder.
Naruto stood in the shadows of a designated waiting alcove, his back pressed flat against the chilled stone wall. He had replaced the transformation seal on his forehead, and the dull, mousy brown hair of "Menma" once again hid his golden heritage. The whisker scars were gone. His breathing was meticulously controlled—four seconds in, four seconds hold, four seconds out—a breathing exercise designed to lower the heart rate and mask one’s chakra signature.
His teammates, Zaku and Dosu, were elsewhere. Zaku had already fought and suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of an Aburame. Dosu was currently in the arena. Naruto didn't care about their fates. They were acceptable casualties, pawns sacrificed to maintain the illusion of a standard genin team.
Naruto closed his eyes, replaying the events of the Forest of Death with a cold, analytical detachment. The encounter with Sasuke Uchiha had yielded the necessary data. The Uchiha was a vessel of raw, unrefined hatred, possessing the ocular hardware Orochimaru desired, but lacking the software to utilize it effectively. He was a spark, but Orochimaru wanted an inferno.
Yet, it was the failure of his own disguise that occupied Naruto’s thoughts. The momentary resonance with the ambient chakra of the forest, the violent clash between the Senju energy and Orochimaru’s seal. It was a variable he had not accounted for.
Father’s seal is perfect, Naruto reminded himself, the thought a practiced mantra. It is my own control that was lacking. I allowed the environment to distract me. I will not make that mistake again.
He reached into his pouch, his fingers brushing against the heavy, specialized explosive tags. The foundational charges were set around the village. All that remained was his preliminary match, after which he was to regroup with Kabuto and await the signal for the Konoha Crush.
"You hide your presence well, kid. But you breathe too loud for a ghost."
The voice was a deep, gravelly baritone, carrying a weight of experience that instantly triggered every instinctual alarm in Naruto’s nervous system.
Naruto’s eyes snapped open. He did not flinch, nor did he immediately reach for a weapon. To do so would broadcast intent. Instead, he smoothly shifted his weight to the balls of his feet, his chakra surging silently through his coils, readying the Shunshin.
Standing at the end of the dimly lit corridor, blocking the only exit, was a towering mountain of a man. He wore a green haori over a red mesh shirt, and a massive scroll was strapped to his back. A thick mane of spiky white hair tumbled down his back, and a horned headband bearing the kanji for 'Oil' rested on his forehead.
Jiraiya. The Toad Sage. One of the legendary Sannin.
Naruto recognized him instantly from Orochimaru’s bingo books. A Class S-rank threat. Former teammate of his master.
"I am merely resting before my match, Lord Sannin," Naruto said, his altered, gravelly 'Menma' voice perfectly steady. "Is there a rule against meditation in the corridors?"
Jiraiya didn't smile. The jovial, perverted mask he usually wore for the public was entirely absent. His dark eyes were locked onto Naruto with a terrifying, piercing intensity. He took a slow, deliberate step forward, his wooden sandals clacking loudly against the stone floor.
"Drop the Henge, kid," Jiraiya said, his voice quiet but carrying the force of a physical blow. "I know who you are. I saw the crystal ball. I saw what happened in the forest."
Naruto’s heart skipped a single beat, a physiological betrayal he instantly suppressed. The Hokage’s surveillance. He had assumed the Forest of Death was unmonitored due to its vast size. A critical miscalculation.
"I don't know what you're talking about," Naruto replied smoothly, slipping a senbon needle between his fingers, hidden by the folds of his cloak.
"Blonde hair. Blue eyes. Three marks on your cheeks," Jiraiya continued, ignoring the denial, closing the distance step by step. His voice began to tremble slightly, betraying a deep, buried grief. "You look just like him. You look exactly like Minato. But your eyes... your eyes look like a killer's. What did he do to you, Naruto?"
The use of his true name in this enemy village sent a cold spike of adrenaline through Naruto’s veins. Negotiations were over. Cover was blown.
Threat Assessment: Critical. Target is S-class. Probability of victory in direct combat: 0.03%. Objective: Evade and escape.
Naruto moved.
He didn't throw the senbon. He threw three smoke bombs directly at the ground while simultaneously forming the hand seal for the Body Flicker. A thick, chakra-laced purple cloud erupted in the enclosed corridor, blinding normal vision and scrambling sensory perception.
Naruto launched himself backward, aiming for a ventilation shaft near the ceiling.
A hand the size of a dinner plate clamped around his ankle before he even left the ground.
Impossible speed, Naruto’s mind screamed.
Jiraiya hadn't even used a jutsu. He had simply moved through the smoke on pure, instinctual combat reflexes honed over three wars. With a grunt of effort, Jiraiya yanked Naruto out of the air and slammed him back down onto the stone floor.
The impact knocked the breath from Naruto’s lungs, but he didn't freeze. Using the momentum, he twisted his body, bringing his free leg around in a vicious, wind-infused crescent kick aimed at Jiraiya’s throat.
Jiraiya blocked it with his forearm. The wind chakra sheared through the sleeve of his haori, drawing a thin line of blood, but the man didn't flinch.
"You're fast, I'll give you that," Jiraiya growled, his grip on Naruto’s ankle tightening like a steel vice. "But you're just a kid playing in a world of monsters."
"I am the monster," Naruto hissed.
He channeled his chakra, not Wind, but the toxic, corrupted purple energy of the altered seal. The corrosive aura flared around his leg, instantly burning Jiraiya’s hand.
Jiraiya hissed in pain and let go.
Naruto flipped backward, landing on his feet a dozen yards away. The corridor was still hazy with purple smoke, but the two combatants locked eyes. Naruto’s transformation seal had burned away from the intense chakra flare. His blonde hair fell wildly around his face, and his icy blue eyes were narrowed into predatory slits.
Jiraiya looked at his burned palm, the skin hissing slightly. His eyes darkened. "That's not the Nine-Tails' chakra. Not pure, anyway. It's sickly. Venomous. Orochimaru tampered with the seal."
"Lord Orochimaru improved it," Naruto corrected coldly, dropping into the Viper’s Stance. "He taught me how to weaponize the beast, rather than fear it like the cowards of this village."
"Improved it?" Jiraiya barked a harsh, humorless laugh. "He's killing you, kid! That chakra is corrosive. It's eating your chakra coils from the inside out. Minato's seal was designed to filter the Fox's chakra, to let it mix safely with your own. Orochimaru is forcing the cage open and letting the toxic sludge drown you!"
"Lies," Naruto stated flatly. "The Hokage abandoned me. The village would have despised me. Orochimaru gave me a purpose. He gave me a home."
Jiraiya’s expression broke. A profound, aching sorrow washed over his scarred face. "He didn't give you a home, Naruto. He stole you. He took you from your crib while the village was burning. Minato and Kushina—your parents—they died to protect you. They loved you."
For a fraction of a second, the iron-clad walls of Naruto’s psyche trembled. Parents. Died to protect you.
But the conditioning was too deep. Orochimaru had spent a decade anticipating this exact psychological warfare.
"They were weak," Naruto spat, channeling more wind chakra to his hands, creating twin blades of swirling air. "And so are you, trying to use sentimentality on a shinobi of the Sound."
Naruto lunged. He initiated a relentless, high-speed assault, utilizing the most lethal taijutsu katas Orochimaru had taught him. He aimed for vital points—eyes, throat, joints, liver. Every strike was laced with razor-sharp wind chakra.
Jiraiya didn't attack. He only defended. He parried, sidestepped, and blocked with agonizing precision. He was reading Naruto’s movements effortlessly, his vast experience dwarfing Naruto’s prodigious talent.
"Stop this, Naruto!" Jiraiya pleaded, deflecting a palm strike that shattered the stone wall beside his head. "I don't want to hurt you! I want to help you!"
"I don't need your help!" Naruto roared, frustrated by the absolute impenetrable defense of the older man.
Naruto pulled back, weaving hand signs at a blinding speed. Snake, Ram, Monkey, Boar, Horse, Tiger.
"Fire Release: Great Fire Annihilation!"
In the enclosed space of the corridor, the jutsu was practically a suicide attack. A massive, roaring torrent of flame erupted from Naruto’s mouth, instantly consuming all the oxygen and superheating the stone walls.
Jiraiya didn't flinch. He slammed his hands onto the floor. "Earth Release: Earth Wall!"
A thick, reinforced slab of rock erupted from the floor, perfectly blocking the corridor. The flames washed over it, turning the stone cherry-red, but failing to penetrate.
Naruto didn't wait. He used the wall as a springboard, launching himself straight up, utilizing his chakra to cling to the ceiling like a spider, bypassing the wall entirely. He dropped down directly behind Jiraiya, his hand forming a dense, screeching sphere of wind chakra.
Rasengan!
Jiraiya whipped around. His eyes widened slightly as he recognized the jutsu—Minato's jutsu.
But Jiraiya was a Sannin. He didn't try to dodge. He stepped into the attack.
With blinding speed, Jiraiya coated his right hand in dense, blue chakra. He caught Naruto’s wrist just inches from his chest, forcefully redirecting the Rasengan to the side. The jutsu ground into the stone wall, instantly carving a massive, perfectly spherical crater, shaking the entire foundation of the arena.
While Naruto was overextended, Jiraiya struck.
He didn't hit Naruto with a fist. His left hand blurred, his five fingertips glowing with intense, concentrated blue flames.
Five-Pronged Seal!
Jiraiya slammed his palm directly into the center of Naruto’s abdomen, right over the corrupted Eight Trigrams Seal.
The impact felt like a lightning bolt detonating inside Naruto’s spinal cord.
A choked, breathless gasp escaped his lips. The agony was absolute. It was not the burning pain of a wound, but a complete, system-wide shutdown of his chakra network. Jiraiya’s jutsu violently clashed with Orochimaru’s venomous overlay, creating a localized chakra explosion inside Naruto’s gut.
The world went white. The screeching sound of the Rasengan faded. The cold stone of the corridor dissolved.
Naruto’s eyes rolled back in his head, and he collapsed, instantly tumbling into the abyss of his own shattered subconscious.
It was raining.
That was the first sensation that registered in Naruto’s mind. A slow, heavy, viscous rain.
He opened his eyes and pushed himself up. He wasn't in the corridor anymore. He was standing on a precarious, jagged outcropping of black stone.
Below him lay a vast, endless ocean of toxic, bubbling sludge. It was a sickly, luminescent purple, giving off plumes of heavy, suffocating gas. The sky above was a bruised, rotting magenta, weeping thick droplets of black fluid that hissed when they struck the stone.
This was his mindscape.
He had been here before, though rarely. Usually, when Orochimaru adjusted the seal, Naruto would catch glimpses of this rotting world. But he had never been pulled completely inside it, fully lucid.
He looked down at his own body. He was wearing his Sound Village robes, but they were soaked and heavy. The air was so dense with malicious intent that it felt like trying to breathe underwater.
Jiraiya's jutsu disrupted my chakra network, Naruto analyzed, forcing his mind to remain clinical despite the overwhelming sensory horror of his surroundings. My consciousness has been forced into the sealing space while my physical body reboots.
A low, vibrating rumble shook the jagged stone beneath his feet. It wasn't a sound; it was a physical force, a localized earthquake originating from the darkness ahead.
Naruto looked up.
Rising from the toxic sludge, towering hundreds of feet into the bruised sky, was a colossal cage. It wasn't made of elegant iron bars, but of jagged, brutal bone, resembling the ribcage of some primordial leviathan. Wrapped around these bones were thick, glowing purple chains—the physical manifestation of Orochimaru’s corrupted seal, pulsing like diseased veins.
But it was what lay behind the bones that commanded absolute attention.
In the suffocating, pitch-black void within the cage, two eyes slowly opened.
They were the size of buildings. Blood red. The pupils were vertical, slitted, and radiated a hatred so ancient, so pure, and so concentrated that it physically burned Naruto’s skin just to look at them.
"Well, well, well," a voice rumbled. It didn't echo; it simply existed everywhere at once, vibrating in Naruto’s teeth and bones. "The little blind snake finally falls into the pit."
Naruto stood tall, suppressing the instinctual terror screaming in his DNA. "Nine-Tails. The Sannin’s jutsu must have damaged Father’s containment parameters. I will repair them when I awaken."
The massive eyes narrowed, radiating a sickening amusement. A massive, clawed paw emerged from the shadows, resting against the inside of the bone cage. The purple chains hissed, burning the red fur, but the beast didn't seem to care.
"Father?" the Kyuubi mocked, a deep, grinding laugh echoing across the toxic swamp. "You still cling to that pathetic delusion? Look around you, child! Look at what your 'Father' has done to this place!"
Naruto looked at the bubbling, purple sludge. "He taught me how to utilize your power."
"He is poisoning us both!" the beast roared, a sudden burst of boiling red chakra flaring against the bars, causing the swamp to violently erupt. "The Fourth Hokage—the man you despise—built a beautiful cage. A strong, clean seal meant to meld my power with yours over time. Your precious Snake merely poured venom into the lock! He is siphoning my chakra, corrupting it, and forcing it through your fragile mortal coils!"
"It makes me strong," Naruto retorted coldly. "I am his perfect weapon."
"You are a battery!" Kurama snarled, leaning closer, his massive snout pressing against the bone bars. The sheer heat radiating from his breath dried the black rain on Naruto’s clothes instantly. "You are a placeholder! You think you are the viper's heir? You are nothing but a warm body keeping my chakra contained until he is ready to harvest it."
"He saved me," Naruto said, his voice dropping slightly, the programmed defense mechanism kicking in. "He took me from a village that would have hated me."
"He stole you from a mother who died with a smile on her face because she thought you were safe!"
The words hit Naruto like a physical blow. Mother. Orochimaru rarely spoke of Kushina Uzumaki, only emphasizing that she was a weak vessel who died during extraction.
"You pride yourself on your logic, little weapon," Kurama purred, his voice dropping to a dangerous, conspiratorial whisper. "You think you see the truth of the world. But you are blind. You only see the shadows the Snake paints on the wall of your cave. Shall I show you the light? Shall I show you the night you were born, without the Snake's venomous whispers filtering the truth?"
"No," Naruto said instantly, taking a step back on the jagged stone. "I don't need your illusions, demon."
"It is not an illusion, boy. It is a memory. Etched into your very soul. Etched into mine."
Before Naruto could weave a sign to attempt a forced awakening, the Kyuubi thrust one massive, chakra-coated claw through the gap in the bone bars. The claw didn't physically pierce Naruto, but the dense, boiling red chakra washed over him like a tidal wave.
The toxic purple swamp vanished. The bruised sky shattered.
Naruto was suddenly standing in the middle of a ruined, burning forest. But it wasn't the Forest of Death.
The air tasted of ash, ozone, and pure, unrestrained terror.
Naruto looked down. He was no longer a thirteen-year-old shinobi. He was a phantom, an incorporeal observer floating above a scene of absolute devastation.
He saw himself. A tiny, frail newborn infant, wrapped in a blanket, crying softly on a small, ceremonial altar in the middle of a barrier.
And standing over him were two people.
One was a man with bright, spiky blonde hair, wearing a torn, bloody white haori. The Fourth Hokage. Minato Namikaze. He looked exhausted, his face pale, but his blue eyes—eyes identical to Naruto’s—burned with an unyielding, fierce determination.
The other was a woman. She had long, vibrant red hair that was currently matted with sweat and dirt. She was beautiful, but she was dying. A massive, gaping wound dominated her abdomen, and several glowing golden chains erupted from her back, extending outward into the darkness.
Naruto followed the chains. They were wrapped tightly around the throat and limbs of a colossal, spectral version of the Nine-Tails, pinning the roaring beast to the ground.
This is the night, Naruto thought, his analytical mind trying to process the sensory input. The night of the attack.
But it was entirely different from the sterile, clinical way Orochimaru had described it. Orochimaru had painted a picture of a desperate, foolish man who used his son as a trash can for a demon he couldn't defeat.
What Naruto saw now was not foolishness. It was absolute, agonizing sacrifice.
He watched as the massive claw of the Nine-Tails—freed for a fraction of a second—lunged directly at the crying infant on the altar.
Minato didn't hesitate. Kushina didn't hesitate.
They both threw themselves in front of the altar.
The massive claw pierced clean through Minato’s back, erupting through his chest, and drove straight into Kushina’s back, halting mere inches from the crying newborn's face.
The phantom Naruto gasped, stumbling backward, his hands flying to his own chest. The sheer, visceral horror of the moment bypassed every psychological barrier he had erected.
He saw the blood drip from his parents' lips onto his infant cheeks.
He heard their final words.
Not curses against the village. Not lamentations of their fate.
“Naruto...” Kushina choked out, tears streaming down her face, her hand trembling as she reached out to gently touch the infant's cheek. “Don't be a picky eater... eat lots and grow up big and strong... Make friends... you don't need a lot of them... just a few... ones you can really, truly trust...”
Minato smiled, a soft, heartbreakingly proud smile, even as his lifeblood poured out over the altar. “Listen to your motor-mouth mother, Naruto. I believe in you.”
The phantom Naruto fell to his knees in the ash. He couldn't breathe. His perfectly ordered, cold, logical world was fracturing.
They loved me, he realized, the thought alien and terrifying. They didn't discard me. They died so I could breathe.
Then, the memory shifted.
The Reaper Death Seal was complete. Minato and Kushina collapsed, their life force extinguished. The massive Nine-Tails dissolved into chakra, sucked violently into the infant's stomach. The barrier dropped.
Silence descended on the ruined clearing, save for the wailing of the newborn.
Then, a rustling sound.
From the shadows of the treeline, a figure emerged. He moved with a horrifying, serpentine grace. Long black hair, pale skin, golden, slitted eyes.
Orochimaru.
Thirteen years younger, wearing the flak jacket of a Konoha shinobi, but his aura was just as dark, just as predatory.
He didn't look at the bodies of the Fourth Hokage and his wife with any respect. He looked at them with clinical disdain. He nudged Minato’s lifeless body out of the way with his foot.
Orochimaru picked up the crying infant.
He didn't hold him like a child. He held him up by the scruff of his blanket, inspecting him the way one might inspect a prized specimen in a laboratory.
“Fascinating,” Orochimaru whispered, his long tongue darting out to lick his lips. “The Uzumaki vitality, combined with the raw power of the Kyuubi. An infinite well of chakra. An immortal battery.”
Orochimaru smiled, a chilling, possessive expression.
“You will be my masterpiece, little one. I will mold you. I will fill your head with my truth. You will be my sword against this pathetic village. And when the time is right... when your Uzumaki body has matured and adapted to the beast’s chakra...”
Orochimaru traced a pale finger over the fresh seal on the infant's stomach.
“...I will extract the beast for my own use, and take your perfect, hollowed-out shell as my permanent vessel. Immortality, forged by the hands of the Fourth Hokage, gifted to me.”
The memory shattered like stained glass.
Naruto was violently yanked back into the reality of his mindscape. He fell to his hands and knees on the jagged black rock, gasping for air, clutching his chest as if his heart were trying to beat its way out of his ribs.
The black rain was pouring down on him again.
He looked up at the bone cage. The massive, red eyes of the Nine-Tails were watching him, completely devoid of their usual malice. There was only a grim, terrible truth in them.
"You see now, child," Kurama rumbled softly. "He does not love you. A parasite does not love its host. He is grooming you for the slaughter. Every jutsu he taught you, every time he reinforced that poison seal, he was simply preparing the meat."
Naruto stared at the bubbling purple swamp. His entire life—thirteen years of blood, sweat, broken bones, and absolute, fanatical devotion—was a lie.
Every time Orochimaru had praised him. Every time he had called him "son." Every time he had promised they would bring down the hypocrites of Konoha together.
It was all manipulation. A psychological cage far stronger than the bones trapping the Fox.
"I..." Naruto whispered, his voice trembling for the first time in his remembered life. "I am nothing to him."
"You are a tool," Kurama agreed. "And soon, you will be a corpse. Unless you realize that the only one who can save you... is you. And perhaps... me. Because if he takes your body, he takes my power, and I refuse to be the pet of a pathetic snake."
Naruto slowly pushed himself up. The cold, analytical detachment that had defined him was gone. In its place, a new emotion was rapidly pooling in his chest.
It wasn't the hot, explosive rage of a child throwing a tantrum. It was a cold, absolute, hyper-dense fury. The fury of a weapon that realizes it has been wielded against itself.
He looked at his hands. The hands that had killed for Orochimaru. The hands that had set explosives in the village his parents had died to protect.
"The seal," Naruto said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "He controls the flow. If I rebel, he will simply shut down my chakra coils and take me by force."
"The Sannin's jutsu outside disrupted his control," Kurama noted. "The Five-Pronged Seal clashes with the venom. For a short time, Orochimaru's remote influence over the cage is severed. But his seal is still poisoning you. You cannot defeat him as you are."
"I don't need to defeat him today," Naruto said, his icy blue eyes narrowing, glowing with a dangerous, newfound clarity. "I need to survive. I need to leave."
"And the Leaf Village?" Kurama challenged. "Will you run to the arms of the Hokage? Tell them the prodigal son has returned?"
Naruto scoffed, a bitter, hollow sound. "No. Konoha is still the village that let me be stolen in the night. They are strangers. I owe them nothing. But I will not be the blade that strikes them for Orochimaru's amusement."
The mental landscape began to tremble violently. The sky cracked, revealing blinding white light behind the bruised clouds.
"You are waking up," Kurama warned. "The snake's spy is nearby. Play your part, little viper. Smile and bare your fangs. But know who you are truly biting."
"I know exactly who I am biting," Naruto said, just as the white light consumed him entirely.
Naruto awoke to the sterile smell of antiseptic and the harsh glare of fluorescent lights.
He was lying on a crisp, white cot. He kept his breathing perfectly even, his eyes closed, running a rapid internal diagnostic.
Physical status: Minor contusions. Chakra network: severely disrupted. The intersection of the Five-Pronged Seal and the corrupted Eight Trigrams is causing massive internal friction. I can only access twenty percent of my reserves without causing permanent coil damage.
He was in the Konoha infirmary. The background noise of nurses moving in the hallway and the distant hum of the arena above told him that the preliminaries were likely still ongoing.
"You can drop the act, Menma. I know you're awake."
Naruto opened his eyes.
Sitting in a chair beside his bed, holding a clipboard and wearing the standard grey scrubs of a Konoha medic, was Kabuto Yakushi. He was adjusting his round glasses, his perpetual, knowing smirk firmly in place.
"Kabuto," Naruto rasped, sitting up slowly, masking the wince of pain that shot through his abdomen.
"You caused quite a stir," Kabuto said mildly, checking a chart. "Engaging Jiraiya of the Sannin in the corridors. An incredibly foolish and reckless move, even for you."
"He ambushed me," Naruto lied effortlessly, slipping perfectly back into the persona of the loyal, arrogant weapon. "He saw through the transformation in the forest. He tracked my chakra signature. I merely defended myself to protect the mission."
Kabuto sighed, placing the clipboard down. "Regardless, the situation is compromised. Jiraiya used a Five-Pronged Seal to scramble your chakra network. It is currently locked in a tug-of-war with Lord Orochimaru's augmentations. You are effectively grounded. Furthermore, the Hokage now knows you are here."
"Then the mission is a failure," Naruto said, keeping his face a mask of disappointment.
Internally, he was studying Kabuto with a completely new perspective.
He knows, Naruto realized with a sickening clarity. Kabuto is Father's right hand. He knows about the vessel plan. He looks at me and sees a walking corpse. He has known my entire life.
The urge to drive a wind-laced kunai through Kabuto’s throat was nearly overpowering. It took every ounce of Naruto’s legendary self-control to keep his chakra suppressed and his expression neutral.
"Not entirely," Kabuto smiled, standing up. "The explosive tags are set. The foundation for the Crush remains. However, you are too valuable a piece to lose to Konoha's ANBU. Lord Orochimaru foresaw this possibility. We are leaving."
"Leaving?" Naruto asked. "What about the Uchiha? I did not finish my evaluation."
"Lord Orochimaru engaged the Uchiha himself in the forest," Kabuto revealed, a hint of genuine excitement in his voice. "He applied the Curse Mark. The seed is planted. Sasuke will seek us out on his own, driven by his thirst for power. You are no longer needed here."
No longer needed.
The words echoed in Naruto’s mind. Before the mindscape, those words would have devastated him. Now, they were a confirmation of the Kyuubi’s truth. He was obsolete. The Uchiha was the new prize.
"I understand," Naruto said dutifully, sliding his legs over the side of the bed. He was still wearing his dark trousers and mesh shirt, though his cloak and weapons pouch were resting on a nearby table. "What are your orders?"
"We leave now, before Jiraiya can convince the Third Hokage to mobilize a capture squad," Kabuto instructed, walking over to the window and opening it, letting in the cool night air. "I have established a secure exfiltration route. We head north, back to the border hideout."
Naruto stood up. His body felt heavy, his chakra sluggish, but his mind had never been sharper.
He strapped his weapons pouch to his leg and threw the dark cloak over his shoulders. He didn't bother reapplying the transformation seal. There was no point now.
He looked out the window at the village of Konoha. The village his parents died for. The village he had been sent to destroy. He felt nothing for it, but he felt a profound, seething hatred for the man who had ordered its destruction.
"Are you ready, Naruto-kun?" Kabuto asked, pausing on the windowsill.
Naruto turned to look at the silver-haired spy. He offered a small, cold smile—a perfect imitation of Orochimaru’s own twisted expression.
"I am ready, Kabuto," Naruto said softly.
He followed Kabuto out the window, vanishing into the shadows of the Leaf Village. He was returning to the Viper's den, but he was no longer the loyal son.
He was a predator, returning to hunt the Snake.
The rain did not fall; it attacked. It lashed against the canopy of the dense forests near the border of the Land of Fire and the Land of Sound in violent, diagonal sheets, driven by a howling gale that sounded like the screams of the damned. The sky was an unbroken canvas of bruised, charcoal grey, entirely devoid of starlight or moonlight.
Through this deluge, two shadows moved with terrifying speed.
Naruto’s boots slammed against the slick, moss-covered branches, his chakra adhering him to the wood for a fraction of a second before he propelled himself forward again. Beside him, Kabuto kept pace, his silver hair plastered to his skull, his round glasses somehow completely devoid of water droplets—a minor, continuous application of wind chakra.
They had been running for twelve hours straight since leaving the Konoha infirmary. Naruto’s physical body was a symphony of suppressed agony. The junction point on his abdomen, where Jiraiya’s Five-Pronged Seal intersected with Orochimaru’s corrupted Eight Trigrams Seal, felt like a white-hot coal buried beneath his skin. The two opposing Fuinjutsu formulas were warring for dominance over his chakra network, causing his internal coils to spasm unpredictably.
He did not let a single wince cross his face.
Pain is data, he reminded himself, though the mantra tasted like ash in his mouth now. The Snake taught me to ignore pain so I wouldn't struggle when he finally put me on the dissection table.
"We are approaching the perimeter," Kabuto called out over the roar of the storm, his voice carrying easily through the localized wind manipulation. "Maintain your chakra suppression, Naruto-kun. The border patrols of Konoha rarely range this far, but Lord Orochimaru demands absolute discretion."
"Understood," Naruto replied, his voice flat, emotionless. The perfect weapon.
Half an hour later, the trees broke, revealing a sheer, jagged cliff face that plunged into a roaring, black river. Built into the side of the cliff, practically invisible to the naked eye, was the Northern Border Hideout. It had once been a temple dedicated to some forgotten deity of the mountains, but Orochimaru had hollowed it out, transforming the sacred halls into a labyrinth of cold stone and sterile laboratories.
Kabuto led the way to a heavy stone door disguised as a rock face. He bit his thumb, smearing blood on a hidden seal. The rock groaned, grinding open just enough to let them slip inside before sealing shut behind them, cutting off the howl of the storm.
The silence of the hideout was absolute, broken only by the slow, rhythmic dripping of condensation from the vaulted ceilings. The air smelled of wet earth, copper, and the sharp, chemical tang of preservatives.
"Wait here," Kabuto instructed, adjusting his glasses in the dim, flickering light of the wall-mounted torches. "I must inform Lord Orochimaru of our arrival and the complications in Konoha. He will summon you shortly."
Kabuto melted into the shadows of the deeper corridors.
Naruto stood alone in the entryway. He took a slow, deep breath, tasting the stale air. For thirteen years, places like this had been his home. He had felt safe in these lightless depths. Now, the stone walls felt like the ribcage of the beast in his mindscape, closing in to crush him.
He didn't wait. He didn't rest. He prepared.
Naruto unsealed a small scroll from his wrist bracer. With practiced, silent motions, he restocked his holsters. Senbon needles dipped in a fast-acting neurotoxin. Explosive tags with condensed blast radii. Black wire as thin as a human hair but strong enough to decapitate a man.
As he tightened the straps on his shins, he focused his mind inward.
Kyuubi, he called out mentally, not entering the mindscape, but projecting his thoughts toward the seal.
A low, rumbling vibration echoed in the back of his skull. "I am here, little weapon. The snake's poison is still disrupted by the toad's seal, but it is repairing itself. You have a narrow window before he regains remote control over your coils."
If I draw on your chakra now, what will happen?
"Without his venomous filter to corrupt it, and with his control fractured, you will receive my chakra in its purest form. But your body is not accustomed to it. It will burn. It will tear your flesh. And the Sannin will not make it easy for you."
Good, Naruto thought, his icy blue eyes narrowing into lethal slits. Let it burn.
He stood up, his dark robes settling around his frame. He walked deliberately down the main corridor, his footsteps completely silent. He didn't wait to be summoned. He was done being a dog answering to a whistle.
He bypassed the lower laboratories and the holding cells, heading straight for the deepest chamber of the temple—the throne room.
As he approached the massive, heavy oak doors, he could hear the sound of violent, wet coughing.
Naruto pushed the doors open.
The throne room was a cavernous space, lit by braziers burning with unnatural, pale green flames. At the far end, atop a raised dais, sat Orochimaru.
The Snake Sannin looked horrific.
His current vessel—a young woman from the Hidden Grass, if Naruto recalled correctly—was rejecting him. Orochimaru was slumped in his stone chair, clutching his chest. His usually flawless, pale skin was mottled with sickly grey patches, peeling away at the jawline to reveal a viscous, white substance underneath. His eyes, usually sharp and golden, were bloodshot and feverish.
Kabuto was at his side, his hands glowing with the green light of the Mystical Palm technique, desperately trying to stabilize the failing cellular structure.
Orochimaru looked up as Naruto entered. Even dying, his presence was a suffocating physical weight.
"Naruto-kun," Orochimaru wheezed, wiping a trail of dark, coagulated blood from his chin. His lips twisted into a grotesque smile. "You return early. Kabuto tells me Jiraiya interfered. A pity. But... perhaps it is fate."
Naruto stopped at the base of the dais, maintaining a distance of thirty feet. He did not bow. He did not offer his usual greeting of 'Father.' He simply stared.
"Your body is failing," Naruto stated, his voice a cold, emotionless void.
Orochimaru chuckled, a wet, rattling sound. "Astute as always. Yes. The exertion of battling the Third Hokage, combined with the sealing of the Uchiha's curse mark, has accelerated the decay. This vessel is spent."
Orochimaru stood up, waving Kabuto away. He staggered slightly, but his golden eyes locked onto Naruto with a terrifying, ravenous hunger. It was a look Naruto had seen a thousand times directed at test subjects, but never at him.
"I had planned to wait, Naruto-kun," Orochimaru hissed, descending the stone steps of the dais slowly. "I had planned to take the Uchiha's body. The Sharingan is a prize without equal. But Sasuke is a seedling. He needs time to grow, time for the Curse Mark to marinate his chakra. I cannot wait."
Orochimaru spread his arms, his white robes billowing slightly. "You, however... you are ripe. You are my masterpiece. An Uzumaki body, tempered by my training, capable of holding immense power. You will serve as my vessel until the Uchiha is ready. It is the greatest honor I can bestow upon you, my son. We will become one."
The sheer, arrogant audacity of the statement crystallized the hatred in Naruto’s chest into a diamond-hard point.
"A temporary vessel," Naruto repeated softly. "A rental property. Is that what I am?"
Orochimaru frowned, sensing the micro-shifts in Naruto’s tone. "You are my legacy, Naruto. Do not let sentimentality ruin your perfect logic. This is the natural order. The strong consume the weak. I gave you life; now, you will give it back to me."
Orochimaru raised his right hand, forming the hand sign for Ram.
He intended to activate the failsafe in Naruto’s seal—a localized paralysis jutsu he had woven into the purple ink years ago.
Naruto didn't move. He felt a sharp, agonizing spike of cold strike his abdomen as Orochimaru sent the chakra signal. But then, Jiraiya’s Five-Pronged Seal flared, a wall of pure, blue, chaotic chakra that intercepted the signal, shattering it before it could reach Naruto's nervous system.
Naruto stood perfectly still.
Orochimaru’s eyes widened a fraction of an inch. He formed the sign again, pumping more chakra into it. "Submit, Naruto."
"No."
The word echoed in the vast cavern, quiet, but carrying the weight of a falling guillotine.
Kabuto immediately dropped into a combat stance, drawing two kunai. "Naruto! What are you doing? Stand down immediately!"
Naruto reached up, gripping the clasp of his dark grey Sound Village robes. With a single, fluid motion, he ripped the garment off, tossing it to the cold stone floor. Underneath, he wore a sleek, sleeveless black combat tunic and matching trousers, taped tightly at the shins and wrists.
"The toad's seal disrupted your leash, Orochimaru," Naruto said, dropping the title of 'Lord' or 'Father' forever. "You have no control over my coils."
Orochimaru lowered his hand. The feverish desperation in his eyes was replaced by a cold, deadly fury. "You dare bare your fangs at the one who raised you from the dirt? You are nothing without me. I am your god."
"You are a parasite," Naruto spat, his blue eyes blazing. "You didn't save me from the fire. You dragged me into the ashes. I spoke with the Fox. I saw the memory. I saw my parents die. I saw you steal me like a thief in the night."
A tense, heavy silence descended upon the throne room. The crackle of the green braziers was the only sound.
Orochimaru’s expression smoothed out, all traces of faux-affection vanishing, leaving behind the true, monstrous visage of the Snake Sannin. He laughed. It was a cold, sibilant sound that made the hairs on Naruto’s arms stand up.
"So, the illusion is broken," Orochimaru purred, his tongue slithering out to taste the air. "I wondered how long it would take for the beast to show you the truth. It changes nothing, Naruto. You are still my creation. Every jutsu you know, every instinct in your body, I carved into you. You cannot defeat your own creator."
"Then let us test your hypothesis," Naruto whispered.
He moved.
He didn't use the Shunshin. He didn't want to waste chakra. He used raw, unadulterated physical speed. He crossed the distance in a heartbeat, drawing a kunai in his right hand, aiming directly for Orochimaru’s throat.
Kabuto intercepted. The silver-haired medic appeared in Naruto’s path, his hands glowing with Chakra Scalpels, swiping at Naruto’s exposed bicep to sever the muscle.
Naruto didn't even break stride. He pivoted on his left foot, completely altering his center of gravity, and delivered a devastating, spinning heel kick to Kabuto’s ribs. The impact sounded like a cracking whip. Kabuto was launched sideways, crashing violently into one of the thick stone pillars supporting the ceiling.
Naruto completed his spin, bringing the kunai down on Orochimaru.
Orochimaru simply opened his mouth. A massive, thick brown snake erupted from his throat, its jaws snapping shut around Naruto’s wrist with bone-crushing force.
Naruto didn't panic. Wind Release: Vacuum Blade!
He channeled a micro-thin layer of wind chakra around his entire forearm. The wind acted like a hyper-speed chainsaw. The snake’s fangs shattered, and its jaw was cleanly severed.
As the dead snake fell away, Naruto thrust his free hand forward, weaving signs with one hand—a trick Orochimaru himself had taught him to show off. Tiger.
A blast of compressed air exploded from his palm, striking Orochimaru point-blank in the chest.
The Sannin was blown backward, crashing into the stone steps of his dais. But as he hit the ground, his body burst into a dozen writhing white snakes. Snake Clone.
Above! Naruto’s instincts screamed.
He leaped backward just as the real Orochimaru dropped from the ceiling, a sword drawn from his own mouth—the Sword of Kusanagi. The legendary blade embedded itself deep into the stone floor where Naruto had stood a millisecond prior.
"Your reflexes are sharp, Naruto-kun," Orochimaru hissed, pulling the blade free. "But you fight exactly as I taught you. You are predictable."
Orochimaru lunged, moving with a horrifying, liquid grace. The Kusanagi blade blurred into a deadly arc.
Naruto drew a second kunai, channeling dense wind chakra into both blades to prevent them from being instantly sheared in half by the mythical sword. The cavern rang with the deafening clang of steel on steel. Sparks showered the dark floor.
Naruto was fighting for his life, parrying and deflecting a barrage of strikes that were too fast for a normal human eye to track. Orochimaru was dying, yes, but he was still a Sannin. The sheer pressure of his killer intent was like fighting at the bottom of the ocean.
He's aiming for non-lethal strikes, Naruto analyzed, ducking under a horizontal slash that cut a stone pillar in half. He wants the vessel intact. He is limiting his own offensive capabilities to preserve my limbs.
Naruto immediately exploited this. He stopped playing defense.
He stepped directly into Orochimaru’s guard, deliberately leaving his left shoulder exposed. Orochimaru, acting on reflex, adjusted his blade to incapacitate rather than kill, aiming the flat of the sword to shatter Naruto’s collarbone.
Naruto took the hit. The Kusanagi slammed into his shoulder with the force of a battering ram. The bone cracked instantly, agonizing pain flaring through his left side.
But it gave Naruto the opening he needed.
With his right hand, Naruto slammed a kunai directly into Orochimaru’s right thigh, pinning it to the stone floor. Before Orochimaru could react, Naruto inhaled deeply, his chest expanding to its absolute limit.
"Wind Release: Great Breakthrough!"
At point-blank range, the localized hurricane didn't just push Orochimaru; it shredded him. The sheer concussive force tore the flesh from Orochimaru’s host body, ripping his left arm clean out of its socket and blowing the Sannin through the air like a ragdoll. Orochimaru crashed through the heavy oak doors of the throne room, splintering them into a thousand pieces, and skidded to a halt in the corridor outside.
Naruto dropped to one knee, clutching his broken shoulder. He breathed heavily, ignoring the pain. He reached into his pouch, pulled out a medical pill Kabuto had developed, and swallowed it dry. It wouldn't heal the bone, but it would numb the nerve endings for an hour.
"Impressive," a voice wheezed from the corridor.
Naruto looked up.
Orochimaru was standing up. His left arm was completely gone, and his chest was a mangled mess of blood and bone. But he wasn't screaming. He was smiling.
Slowly, sickeningly, Orochimaru opened his mouth impossibly wide. Two pale hands reached up from his own throat, gripping the edges of his mouth. With a wet, tearing sound, a completely fresh, uninjured Orochimaru pulled himself out of his own ruined mouth, shedding the destroyed body like a snake shedding its skin. He stood amidst the viscera, pristine and clean, though he looked significantly paler, his breathing heavier.
"The Oral Rebirth technique," Naruto muttered, standing up, his left arm hanging limp. "You sacrifice a massive portion of your chakra reserves to rebuild the host. You can't do that many times in your current state."
"I only need to do it once to outlast a child," Orochimaru sneered. He bit his own thumb, smearing blood on his left palm. He didn't even bother weaving the signs; he simply slammed his hand onto the stone floor.
"Summoning Jutsu!"
A massive plume of white smoke erupted in the corridor, instantly expanding to fill the massive cavern of the throne room. The ground shook violently, the walls cracking under immense pressure.
From the smoke emerged a colossal, purple-scaled serpent. It was easily a hundred feet long, its body thick as a house, with four horn-like protrusions on its head. Manda. Or rather, a juvenile clone of Manda, as the cavern could not hold the true Boss Summon. But it was still a monstrosity of raw power.
The serpent hissed, its yellow eyes locking onto Naruto.
"Eat his limbs, leave the torso," Orochimaru commanded, standing atop the serpent's head.
Naruto didn't flinch. He bit his own thumb, drawing blood. He had not signed the snake contract Orochimaru possessed. He had found a different scroll in the deep archives, one belonging to a forgotten, extinct breed of serpents from the Land of Wind.
Naruto slammed his good hand onto the ground. "Summoning Jutsu!"
A second, equally massive explosion of smoke countered Orochimaru’s.
When it cleared, Naruto was standing atop the head of his own creation. It was a terrifying chimera he had secretly bred and bound to his blood. A massive, bone-white viper, its scales not smooth, but jagged and sharp like obsidian glass. It possessed no eyes, only deep, sensory pits that tracked heat and chakra, and two massive, curved fangs that dripped with a clear, acidic venom.
“You call, little master?” the white viper hissed, its voice echoing in Naruto’s mind.
"Tear that purple worm to pieces, Shiro," Naruto commanded.
The two leviathans clashed.
The underground cavern became a battlefield of titans. The purple serpent lunged, jaws snapping, but the white viper was faster. It wrapped its massive coils around the purple snake, the jagged, glass-like scales slicing deep into the purple flesh. The purple snake shrieked, thrashing violently, smashing into the support pillars and bringing massive chunks of the ceiling crashing down upon them.
"You dare use my own arts against me?!" Orochimaru roared, leaping from the head of his struggling summon, launching himself through the air directly at Naruto.
Naruto leaped to meet him in mid-air.
They clashed in freefall. Naruto threw a volley of explosive kunai. Orochimaru deflected them with a wave of thousands of smaller, summoned snakes from his sleeves. The explosions rocked the air, throwing them both apart.
Naruto landed hard on the edge of the destroyed dais. Orochimaru landed halfway across the room, completely unbothered by the shockwaves.
"Enough games!" Orochimaru yelled, his patience finally snapping. His hands blurred through a terrifyingly complex series of seals.
The air around Naruto suddenly turned cold and heavy. The shadows on the floor stretched and warped, rising up to grab his ankles.
Fuinjutsu: Earth Paralysis!
Naruto couldn't move his legs. The stone itself had clamped around him, infused with Orochimaru’s senjutsu chakra.
Orochimaru advanced, his eyes glowing with maniacal triumph. "You are strong, Naruto. Stronger than I anticipated. But you lack experience. You lack the understanding of true, fundamental jutsu. Now... be still. Let us complete the transfer."
Orochimaru’s body began to shift. It lost its humanoid shape, melting and elongating into a massive, horrifying amalgamation of thousands of white snakes, all bound together to form the shape of an eight-headed serpent. The true form of Orochimaru.
The largest head lunged forward, jaws distending, aiming to swallow Naruto whole and pull his consciousness into the dimension of the Living Corpse Reincarnation.
Naruto couldn't dodge. He couldn't weave hand signs. His left arm was broken, his legs were sealed in stone.
He stared into the cavernous, fanged maw of his creator.
He didn't feel fear. He felt an absolute, burning refusal to be a victim.
Fox, Naruto commanded, his mental voice ringing with the authority of an Uzumaki. Now.
Deep within the ruined mindscape, the colossal nine-tailed beast grinned, bearing teeth the size of mountains.
"With pleasure, little viper. Let us show this snake what a true monster looks like."
Kurama didn't just leak chakra. He threw the doors of the cage open.
In the physical world, just as Orochimaru’s jaws were inches from Naruto’s face, reality fractured.
An explosion of pure, unadulterated red chakra erupted from Naruto’s body. It was not the toxic, sickly purple sludge that Orochimaru had carefully cultivated. This was pure, boiling, primordial fury. It possessed physical mass. It struck the giant white snake head with the force of a meteor, instantly vaporizing the front rows of fangs and throwing the massive serpent backward.
The stone sealing Naruto's legs instantly melted into slag under the sheer heat of the chakra.
The entire cavern illuminated in a terrifying, blood-red glow. The temperature skyrocketed, instantly evaporating the dampness in the air.
Orochimaru reformed his humanoid body from the mass of snakes, skidding backward, his golden eyes wide with genuine, unadulterated shock. "What... what is this? The seal... the venom... it should have paralyzed the beast!"
"You didn't paralyze him, you arrogant fool," a voice echoed. But it wasn't Naruto’s voice. It was a terrifying, dual-toned harmony of Naruto’s icy baritone and the demonic, grinding rumble of the Nine-Tails.
The dust cleared.
Naruto stood in the center of the crater. He was entirely engulfed in a boiling, shifting cloak of dense red chakra. It bubbled like molten lava, taking the distinct shape of a fox. Two massive ears made of pure energy stood atop his head, and extending from his tailbone were three, distinct, thrashing tails of chakra.
His skin was peeling away, instantly healing and peeling again in a continuous cycle of destruction and regeneration. His eyes were completely red, the vertical slits practically glowing in the dark.
The Three-Tailed Cloak.
"You thought you were a god in the dark," Naruto/Kurama rumbled, the sheer acoustic pressure of the voice cracking the remaining stone pillars. "You are nothing but an insect playing with fire."
Naruto vanished.
There was no Body Flicker. There was no wind manipulation. It was just raw, incomprehensible speed powered by the strongest entity on the continent.
He appeared directly in front of Orochimaru.
Orochimaru barely had time to cross his arms.
Naruto delivered a single, brutal punch to Orochimaru’s chest. The impact didn't just break bones; it ruptured the air pressure in the room. A massive shockwave blasted outward, pulverizing the stone walls. Orochimaru’s forearms were instantly shattered, bent backward at impossible angles, and the Sannin was launched backward like a cannonball.
He crashed through three consecutive stone walls of the hideout, disappearing into the darkness of the deeper labyrinth.
Naruto didn't let up. He dropped to all fours, moving like a feral beast, his three red tails whipping wildly behind him, melting the stone floor wherever they touched. He launched himself through the holes Orochimaru had made, pursuing his prey.
He found Orochimaru in a massive, circular laboratory. Vats of green fluid were shattered, horrific experiments thrashing and dying on the floor.
Orochimaru was trying to stand, his body broken and bleeding profusely. He looked at the approaching red demon with a mixture of terror and obsessive fascination.
"Beautiful," Orochimaru choked out, coughing up a massive amount of blood. "Such raw, unfiltered power. I must have it!"
Orochimaru slammed his broken hands together, forcing his chakra coils to fire despite the physical damage.
"Summoning: Triple Rashomon!"
Three massive, demonic gates made of reinforced steel and iron erupted from the floor between Orochimaru and Naruto, towering into the darkness above. The ultimate defense.
Naruto didn't slow down. He didn't try to go around.
He simply opened his mouth.
Red and blue chakra began to aggressively gather between his jaws, spinning and condensing at a terrifying rate, forming a dense, black sphere of absolute annihilation. A Tailed Beast Bomb.
He didn't fire it as a projectile. He clamped his jaws down on the sphere, swallowed it, and lunged directly at the first Rashomon gate.
He struck the gate shoulder-first, releasing the contained blast of the Tailed Beast Bomb simultaneously.
The resulting explosion was catastrophic.
The first gate, designed to withstand a mountain-destroying impact, instantly vaporized into shrapnel. The sheer kinetic force of the blast tore through the second gate, ripping it off its hinges. The third gate buckled, bowed inward, and then shattered.
The shockwave hit Orochimaru, flaying the skin from his bones and throwing him violently against the far wall of the laboratory.
The entire underground hideout began to collapse. Massive chunks of the ceiling, weighing tons, rained down upon them.
Naruto emerged from the smoke, his red chakra cloak flickering but intact. He walked slowly toward the ruined, mangled body of Orochimaru. The Sannin was missing his lower half, pinned beneath a massive boulder. He was dying. For real, this time.
Naruto stood over him, raising a chakra-coated claw, ready to drive it through Orochimaru’s skull and end the nightmare forever.
"Naruto! Stop!"
A figure dropped from the ceiling, landing directly between Naruto and Orochimaru.
Kabuto.
The medic was battered, bleeding from his head, but his hands were glowing with intense green chakra. He wasn't preparing to attack Naruto; he was holding a glowing, complex seal tag directly over his own heart.
"If you kill him, Naruto, you kill me," Kabuto yelled over the sound of the collapsing cavern. "And if I die, the remote detonation sequence for the explosive tags you planted in Konoha will activate immediately! Thousands of innocent people will die in the blast!"
Naruto paused, his red eyes narrowing.
Konoha. The village.
He didn't care about the villagers. They were strangers. But... his parents had died for them. They had sacrificed everything to keep that village safe. If Naruto triggered those bombs, he would be finishing the job the Nine-Tails had started thirteen years ago. He would be destroying the only thing his parents had left behind.
"Do it!" Kurama roared in his mind. "Let the village burn! Crush the snake!"
But Naruto hesitated. That fraction of a second of human sentimentality, a legacy of Minato and Kushina fighting through the cold logic of Orochimaru’s programming, was all Kabuto needed.
Kabuto slammed his hands onto the ground, not attacking, but utilizing an advanced Earth Release to violently shatter the floor beneath Naruto, dropping him into a lower sub-level, while simultaneously dragging Orochimaru’s torso into a summoned snake's mouth for escape.
Naruto fell into the darkness, crashing into the flooded lower aqueducts of the hideout.
The cold water hissed violently as it met the boiling red chakra of the cloak.
Naruto stood up in the waist-deep water. The ceiling above him was completely caving in. The hideout was destroyed. Kabuto and Orochimaru were gone, escaping through the summoning network.
The rage in Naruto’s chest began to subside, replaced by exhaustion. The Three-Tailed Cloak flickered, the boiling red chakra receding back into the seal, leaving behind the severe burns and tore muscles on his own body.
He was alone in the dark.
He fell to his knees in the water, gasping for air, clutching his broken left shoulder. He was battered, bleeding, and entirely depleted of chakra.
But as he looked up at the collapsing stones, feeling the icy rush of the underground river against his legs, a strange, entirely foreign sensation washed over him.
He wasn't a weapon anymore.
He wasn't a vessel.
He wasn't Orochimaru's son.
He reached down, gripping the fabric of his dark combat tunic. He remembered the white robes he used to wear. The uniform of the Sound. The skin of the snake.
With his good hand, he tore the dark tunic off, tossing it into the rushing river, leaving himself bare-chested in the dark. The scars on his body, the corrupted seal on his stomach... they were marks of his past, but they no longer defined his future.
"I am Naruto Uzumaki," he whispered to the empty cavern, the sound barely audible over the roaring water.
He stood up, his icy blue eyes shining with a fierce, unyielding light in the darkness. He turned and began to walk, following the current of the underground river toward the surface, leaving the ruins of his false life behind him.
The Viper had shed his skin. The Maelstrom had been unleashed.
