What if Deku had the unbreakable Nemean lion form as a quirk and was overpowered
Long before the advent of Quirks, before the glowing baby in Qingqing City signaled the dawn of a superhuman society, there were myths. Stories passed down through generations to explain the unexplainable, to give a face to the terrifying forces of nature. Among the ancient Greeks, there was the legend of the Nemean Lion.
It was a beast of apocalyptic terror, an apex predator whose golden fur was impervious to mortal weapons. Swords shattered against its hide. Arrows bounced off its mane like raindrops. Fire could not scorch it, and poison could not pierce its skin. It was a creature of absolute, unbreakable invulnerability. To defeat it, the great hero Heracles had to corner the beast and strangle it with his bare hands, bypassing its impenetrable armor entirely.
Millennia later, the age of myths was reborn as the age of Quirks. The extraordinary became the mundane. Men breathed fire, women manipulated gravity, and children were born with the traits of beasts.
Izuku Midoriya did not know about the Nemean Lion when he was four years old. He only knew that he wanted to be a hero, and that his best friend, Katsuki Bakugo, was currently acting like a villain.
The afternoon sun beat down relentlessly on the neighborhood playground, casting long, dramatic shadows across the sand. The air was thick with the scent of ozone and burning caramel—the distinct, acrid byproduct of Katsuki’s newly awakened Quirk.
"That's mean, Kacchan," Izuku said.
His voice was a tiny, trembling thing. He stood with his arms spread wide, placing his small, fragile body between a sobbing boy on the ground and Katsuki’s sneering gang. Izuku’s knees knocked together so hard they threatened to bruise, and tears pricked the corners of his large emerald eyes. He had no Quirk. His mother could pull small objects toward her, and his absent father could breathe fire, but Izuku’s extra toe joint had seemingly condemned him to a life of baseline humanity.
"Can't you see he's crying?" Izuku squeaked, taking a half-step forward despite the paralyzing terror gripping his spine. "If you keep going... I-I'll stop you myself!"
Katsuki just smirked. It was a cruel, sharp expression that didn't belong on a child’s face. He punched his palms together, producing a sharp CRACK and a flash of orange light. The two lackeys flanking him grinned menacingly.
"You want to pretend to be a hero?" Katsuki mocked, taking a step forward. The smell of burnt sugar grew stronger. "You don't have a Quirk, Deku. You're just a pebble in my way."
Katsuki lunged.
Time seemed to slow to a crawl. Izuku watched the small, explosive fist rocketing toward his face. He squeezed his eyes shut. He didn't run. He didn't move out of the way. He braced for the searing heat, the blunt force trauma, the pain that was inevitably about to follow. I have to protect him, Izuku thought frantically. A hero protects people. I need a shield. I need to be strong.
Deep within his chest, something ancient and dormant snapped awake.
It did not feel like a spark. It felt like a supernova. A surge of blistering, volcanic heat erupted from his solar plexus, rushing through his veins like molten gold. It was a pressure so immense that Izuku felt as though his skin would rip apart, yet there was no pain—only power. Absolute, terrifying power.
CRASH.
The explosion connected. Dust and smoke bloomed into the air, blinding the other children. The sobbing boy behind Izuku shrieked and scrambled backward. Katsuki landed on his feet, a triumphant, vicious grin spreading across his face.
But as the smoke began to clear, Katsuki’s grin faltered.
Izuku was still standing. He hadn't been thrown backward. He hadn't even flinched.
But he was no longer just a small, trembling boy.
Where Izuku’s scrawny arms had been, massive, heavily muscled limbs now rested, covered in shimmering, dense golden fur that caught the sunlight like spun bullion. His hands had elongated, shifting into devastatingly large paws tipped with ebony claws that glinted menacingly. Around his neck and shoulders, a thick, majestic mane of the same indestructible gold had burst forth, shielding his head and torso.
The smoke completely faded, revealing the truth. Katsuki’s explosion had hit Izuku directly in the chest. It had burned away the fabric of Izuku’s All Might t-shirt. But the skin beneath—or rather, the thick pelt of golden fur—was pristine. There was not a single scorch mark. Not a single singed hair.
Izuku opened his eyes. They were no longer soft, round emeralds. His irises had sharpened, glowing with a fierce, predatory, golden-green luminescence. The pupils were vertical slits.
A heavy, oppressive silence fell over the playground. The birds stopped singing. Katsuki’s lackeys took a synchronized, terrified step backward.
Izuku blinked, looking down at his massive, golden arms. He flexed his fingers, watching in utter bewilderment as three-inch black claws slid seamlessly in and out of his knuckles with a quiet snikt. He didn't feel hurt. He felt... invincible.
"Deku...?" Katsuki whispered, his voice cracking, his crimson eyes wide with disbelief.
Izuku looked up. When he opened his mouth to speak, to ask what had happened, his voice was layered with a deep, rumbling, baritone growl that vibrated in the chests of everyone present.
"Kacchan...?" Izuku rumbled.
Katsuki Bakugo, the undisputed king of the playground, fell backward onto the sand, absolutely terrified.
Ten Years Later.
Aldera Junior High was not a place built for titans. It was built for ordinary adolescents with ordinary, manageable Quirks.
Izuku Midoriya sat at his desk in the middle row, rigidly holding his posture. It was an exercise in extreme, agonizing restraint. At fourteen years old, Izuku stood an imposing six feet, four inches tall. He was built like a mythological demigod, with shoulders so broad he constantly had to angle himself sideways to fit through the school's standard doorways.
He was not transformed right now. His skin was pale and dotted with his trademark freckles, and his unruly mop of green hair still curled wildly atop his head. But the Nemean Quirk was a Mutant/Transformation hybrid. Even in his fully human state, the Quirk passively altered his physiology to support the immense strain of his lion form. His bone density was roughly ten times that of a normal human. His muscle fibers were braided steel.
Izuku carefully picked up his mechanical pencil. He gripped it with the delicate precision of a surgeon handling a live explosive. He gently pressed the graphite to his notebook.
Snap.
Izuku sighed silently through his nose as the plastic casing of the pencil shattered into three distinct pieces, sprinkling lead and springs across his desk.
"Careful, Midoriya," whispered the student at the desk next to him, eyeing the shattered pencil with a mix of awe and mild terror. "That's your third one today."
"I know," Izuku whispered back, his voice a soft, polite rumble. "I misjudged the structural integrity of the plastic. I'll just use a pen."
He reached into his bag, pulling out a solid titanium pen his mother had custom-ordered for him online. It was the only writing utensil he couldn't accidentally turn to dust when he got stressed.
At the front of the classroom, the homeroom teacher slapped a stack of papers against his podium. "Alright, settle down, everyone. Since you're all third-years, it's time to start thinking seriously about your futures. I'm handing out printouts for your career routeing..."
The teacher paused, a wry smile crossing his face. He dramatically tossed the papers into the air. "But who am I kidding? You all want to be heroes, right?!"
The classroom erupted. Students leaped from their desks, showing off their Quirks. Fingers elongated, small bursts of water shot into the air, and someone's head turned into a rock. It was a cacophony of adolescent excitement.
Izuku didn't cheer. He just smiled a little, his eyes fixed on his notebook. Hero Analysis for the Future, Vol. 13.
"Hey, teach!" a loud, abrasive voice cut through the noise. "Don't lump me in with this bunch of losers. I'm not gonna be stuck at the bottom of the barrel with these crappy Quirks!"
Katsuki Bakugo leaned back in his chair, his feet propped up on his desk. He wore his uniform with a slovenly arrogance.
The class instantly turned on him, shouting indignities, but Katsuki just laughed, tiny explosions popping like firecrackers in his palms. "Bring it on, extras! I'm the only one here with the stuff to make it to U.A. High!"
"Ah, yes, Bakugo," the teacher said, adjusting his glasses. "You are aiming for U.A., aren't you?"
Murmurs rippled through the room. U.A. was the national academy. The acceptance rate was abysmally low.
"I aced the mock test!" Katsuki boasted, standing up and slamming his hands on the desk. "I'm the only one at this school who stands a chance. I'll even surpass All Might and become the best hero out there! I'll carve my name into the top ten earners list!"
"Oh," the teacher added casually, flipping through his clipboard. "Midoriya, didn't you also apply for U.A.?"
The classroom froze. The cheering stopped. The murmuring ceased.
Slowly, every single head turned to look at the center of the room.
Izuku shrank down in his seat—or at least, he tried to. When you have shoulders the width of a small refrigerator, shrinking is a logistical impossibility. He rubbed the back of his neck, offering a sheepish, apologetic smile. "Um. Yes. I did."
Nobody laughed.
If this had been another universe, perhaps they would have mocked him. Perhaps Katsuki would have exploded his desk. But in this universe, everyone in Aldera Junior High had seen the PE festival three years ago, when Izuku accidentally threw a softball so hard it broke the sound barrier and shattered every window on the gymnasium’s east side.
Katsuki stiffened. His jaw clenched so tight the muscles bulged. He slowly turned his head to glare at Izuku. The sheer, venomous rage in Katsuki's crimson eyes was palpable. He didn't say a word. He didn't explode. He just glared, his breathing heavy, before aggressively turning back to the front of the room and sitting down in silence.
The tension was suffocating. Katsuki hated Izuku. He had always hated Izuku, but that hatred had evolved from a superiority complex into a bitter, gnawing inferiority complex. Katsuki was a prodigy, a genius with a powerful, versatile Quirk. But Izuku... Izuku was a force of nature. An immovable object and an unstoppable force rolled into a polite, stuttering nerd who constantly apologized for taking up too much space.
When the final bell rang, the classroom emptied quickly. People generally liked Izuku—he was notoriously kind, always willing to help carry heavy boxes or tutor someone in math—but they gave him a wide berth. It was the same way one might respect a sleeping bear.
Izuku was packing his custom-made, reinforced titanium-thread backpack when a shadow fell over his desk.
He looked up. Katsuki stood there, flanked by two lackeys who looked like they would rather be anywhere else. Katsuki’s hands were stuffed in his pockets, but smoke was wafting from his collar.
"Deku," Katsuki growled, his voice dangerously low.
"Hey, Kacchan," Izuku replied mildly. He stood up. When he straightened his posture, he towered over Katsuki by nearly eight inches. Izuku made a conscious effort to slouch slightly, not wanting to seem intimidating.
"Don't give me that passive, pitying look," Katsuki hissed, slamming a hand down on Izuku's desk. The wood groaned under the heat. "You think just because you're a walking tank, you've got U.A. in the bag?"
"No," Izuku said honestly. "The entrance exam includes a written portion, and U.A. looks for versatility, not just raw power. Your Quirk is much more versatile than mine, Kacchan. Your mobility and ranged attacks are incredible."
Katsuki's eye twitched. If Izuku had insulted him, it would have been easier. But Izuku’s genuine, analytical praise was worse. It felt like an adult humoring a child.
"Shut up," Katsuki spat. "I'm going to U.A. I'm going to be number one. And I don't care how indestructible your stupid fur is. If we end up in the same exam, I'm going to blow you to pieces."
Izuku sighed softly. "You can't blow me to pieces, Kacchan. We established that when we were four. And again when we were eight. And when we were eleven."
"I'LL FIND A WAY!" Katsuki roared, a large explosion finally detonating in his palm. The blast washed over Izuku's chest. It ruined his uniform shirt, blowing a jagged hole through the fabric and leaving the edges smoldering.
Beneath the ruined shirt, Izuku's skin was entirely unaffected. He didn't even blink against the flash of light.
Katsuki stared at the unblemished skin, a muscle jumping in his cheek. He spun on his heel, his face contorted in a mix of rage and frustration. "Come on," he snapped at his lackeys. "I need to go kill some slimes at the arcade to blow off steam."
Izuku watched him leave, feeling a familiar pang of sadness. He looked down at his ruined shirt. Mom is going to be upset. That's the second shirt this month.
He slung his heavy backpack over his shoulder and walked out of the school.
The walk home was normally the best part of Izuku's day. It was quiet. It gave him time to process his thoughts, to write in his notebooks, and to practice his breathing.
Breathing was important.
When Dr. Tsubasa had diagnosed Izuku's Quirk a decade ago, he had named it Nemean, after the mythical lion. He had explained that Izuku possessed a cellular structure that, when activated, arranged itself into an unbreakable lattice. His golden fur was literally invulnerable to kinetic and thermal energy.
But Izuku carried a secret burden. A fear that gnawed at him every time he felt the beast stirring in his blood.
He was too strong.
Once, when he was ten, he had fully transformed to stop a runaway truck from hitting a stray cat. He had caught the truck, but his grip had been too tight. His claws had sheared through the engine block like butter, and the force of his stopping the vehicle had caused it to crumple around him. The driver had survived, but Izuku had seen the sheer terror in the man's eyes when he looked at the nine-foot-tall golden monster holding his livelihood.
Izuku didn't want to be a monster. He wanted to be a hero. He wanted to smile like All Might, to make people feel safe. But how could a beast make people feel safe? Every time he used his power, he felt a primal, predatory instinct trying to claw its way to the surface—a desire to hunt, to tear, to roar until the heavens shook. He spent every waking moment holding it back, caging the lion behind walls of mathematics, hero trivia, and polite smiles.
He decided to take a shortcut under a bridge to get home faster. The tunnel was cool, shaded from the afternoon sun, and echoed with the sound of his heavy footsteps.
He opened his notebook, Vol. 13, reviewing his notes on the new pro-hero, Mt. Lady. Gigantification Quirks are incredible for crowd control and taking down massive targets, but the property damage liability must be astronomical. I wonder if she has a specialized insurance policy...
CLANG.
Izuku stopped. He looked up from his notebook.
A few yards ahead of him, a heavy cast-iron manhole cover had been blasted into the air. It flipped end-over-end before crashing onto the concrete pavement.
From the dark, circular hole in the ground, a thick, putrid green liquid began to bubble upward. It smelled like raw sewage and rotting garbage. The liquid coalesced, rising into a towering, gelatinous mass. Two massive, bulbous eyes opened within the sludge, followed by a jagged maw of crooked teeth.
"A medium-sized meat shield," a gurgling, wet voice echoed off the tunnel walls. "Perfect. You'll do nicely."
Izuku blinked. A villain? Here?
Before Izuku could react, the Sludge Villain lunged. The villain was fast, a tidal wave of toxic slime that crashed down upon Izuku, completely enveloping him.
Izuku stood completely still as the slime covered his arms, his chest, and his face.
"Don't fight it, kid!" the villain laughed, the sound bubbling thickly. "It'll only hurt for about forty-five seconds. I'm just hijacking your body! Thanks for the help; you're my hero!"
The villain forced his liquid mass into Izuku’s mouth and nose.
Izuku’s eyes went wide. The sludge was thick, heavy, and tasted vile. It blocked his windpipe instantly. He tried to inhale, but his lungs only pulled against a vacuum of suffocating slime.
Panic, cold and sharp, pierced through Izuku's calm exterior.
I... I can't breathe.
His indestructible exterior meant nothing. The golden fur, the unbreakable skin—none of it mattered if he couldn't get oxygen to his brain. He was drowning on dry land. His lungs burned, screaming for air. His vision began to spot with black stars.
Is this it? Izuku thought, his thoughts becoming sluggish. Am I going to die in a tunnel? After everything... after holding back so much... I'm going to be killed by a pile of mud?
Then, the cage broke.
The primal instincts he spent his life suppressing realized the host was dying. The beast did not care for property damage. The beast did not care for being polite. The beast only knew survival.
A low, resonant sound began to vibrate in the tunnel. It started as a hum, a deep, earth-shaking frequency that caused the concrete beneath them to splinter and crack.
The Sludge Villain stopped laughing. "What... what the hell is that?"
The sound grew louder. It was a growl. A roar building in the chest of a predator.
Izuku’s eyes, previously round and terrified, snapped open. They were glowing with blinding, luminescent gold.
THUMP-THUMP.
A wave of blistering heat radiated from Izuku's body. The Sludge Villain recoiled slightly, shrieking as the liquid touching Izuku’s skin began to boil and steam.
"What kind of Quirk is this?!" the villain screamed, trying to force himself deeper down Izuku's throat to finish the job faster.
Izuku didn't reach for his notebook. He didn't try to reason. He acted.
In a fraction of a second, his arms expanded, tearing through the sleeves of his uniform. Golden fur erupted across his forearms, dense and shimmering. His hands shifted, bones snapping and resetting into massive, padded paws. Five pitch-black claws, each the length of a butcher's knife, shot from his knuckles with a sound like unsheathing swords.
Izuku brought his right claw up. He didn't punch. He didn't blast. He swiped.
SWOOSH.
The sheer kinetic force of the swipe generated a blade of pressurized air. The villain’s liquid body was caught in the crosshairs. The claws tore through the sludge with absolute, zero-resistance ease.
But it wasn't just a cut. The concussive shockwave of Izuku’s swing caught the liquid mass, ripping it apart at a molecular level. The Sludge Villain’s eyes bulged in absolute terror as his body was shredded into a thousand different droplets.
The pressure wave continued upward, striking the roof of the concrete tunnel. The concrete groaned, fractured, and then blew outward, sending dust and debris raining down on the street above.
The villain's grip shattered. The sludge rained down on the concrete in pathetic, unmoving puddles.
Izuku fell to his hands and knees, gasping for air. He coughed violently, expelling the last of the vile green slime from his throat. Oxygen flooded his burning lungs. He heaved, his massive shoulders rising and falling.
As his breathing steadied, the golden glow in his eyes faded back to emerald green. The fur on his arms receded, pulling back into his skin, leaving him in his human form once more, albeit with completely shredded sleeves.
"Oh... oh man," Izuku wheezed, sitting back on his haunches. "That... that was awful. I almost died."
He looked around the tunnel. The Sludge Villain was currently reduced to quivering piles of goo splattered across a fifty-foot radius. The villain wasn't dead, but the shockwave of Izuku's claws had completely destabilized his form, leaving him unconscious and unable to coalesce.
Izuku wiped his mouth, his analytical mind snapping back to the forefront. "Right. Villain containment. Liquid-based body... scattered into distinct pools... surface tension holds his consciousness together..."
Izuku looked around. Near the wall, a large, empty two-liter PET soda bottle lay discarded in a pile of trash.
Izuku picked it up, dusted it off, and walked over to the largest puddle containing an unconscious eyeball.
"Excuse me," Izuku mumbled politely to the unconscious villain. "I'm just going to scoop you up now so you don't hurt anyone else."
He spent the next two minutes meticulously scraping the villain into the plastic bottle, using the cover of his ruined notebook as a makeshift dustpan. Once he was sure he had gathered enough of the main mass to prevent the villain from reforming, he screwed the yellow plastic cap on tightly.
"There we go," Izuku said, holding the bottle up to the light. The villain sloshed inside, utterly defeated.
Izuku sighed, looking at his torn uniform and the massive gouge in the tunnel ceiling above him. "Property damage again. Mom is going to ground me."
Suddenly, the manhole cover that had started the whole ordeal exploded completely out of its frame, clattering noisily against the wall.
A massive hand gripped the edge of the hole.
"FEAR NOT, CITIZEN!"
The voice was like a thunderclap. It boomed with such charismatic, overwhelming force that it seemed to banish the shadows of the tunnel entirely.
From the sewer, a towering figure vaulted into the air, landing in a heroic, three-point crouch. He stood up, towering at over seven feet tall. He was draped in shadows, but his muscular silhouette and the two iconic V-shaped tufts of blonde hair on his head were unmistakable. He wore a simple white t-shirt and cargo pants, but his presence was anything but simple.
"FOR I AM HERE!" All Might bellowed, flashing a smile that practically gleamed in the dim light.
Izuku Midoriya stopped breathing. His brain entirely short-circuited. The bottle of sludge slipped slightly in his grasp.
All Might struck a heroic pose, his fists planted firmly on his hips. He scanned the tunnel, his blue eyes searching for the villain he had been chasing through the city's sewer system for the last hour.
He saw the blasted tunnel ceiling. He saw the scorch marks. And then, he saw a remarkably tall, heavily muscled teenager with wild green hair, holding a plastic soda bottle.
All Might blinked. His smile remained, but his eyes conveyed a deep, profound confusion.
He looked at the boy. He looked at the bottle. He saw the villain’s unconscious eye floating inside the plastic container.
"Ah," All Might boomed, though a bit of his heroic momentum had stalled. "It appears... the situation is already under control!"
Izuku dropped his notebook. It hit the concrete with a dull thud.
"A-A-All Might," Izuku stammered, his voice rising three octaves. The cool, analytical teenager who had just shredded a villain was gone, replaced instantly by the ultimate fanboy. "You... you're All Might! The Symbol of Peace! The Number One Hero! You're here! In my tunnel! I mean, it's not my tunnel, it's the city's tunnel, but you're in it! With me!"
All Might chuckled, a hearty, booming sound. He walked forward, his heavy boots echoing. "Indeed I am, young man! I was pursuing this villain after he committed a robbery, but he slipped into the sewage system. I see you've managed to apprehend him yourself! That is quite the feat for a civilian!"
All Might looked closely at Izuku. The boy was large—nearly as tall as All Might in his civilian clothes, and incredibly built. But it was the sheer force that had obliterated the villain and cracked the tunnel ceiling that intrigued him.
"Your Quirk," All Might noted, gesturing to the blasted concrete above. "It packs quite a punch. Did you do that?"
Izuku flushed bright red, rubbing the back of his neck. "Y-Yes, sir. I'm sorry about the ceiling. I panicked. I have a Mutant/Transformation Quirk. It... it alters my physical state. When I felt I was suffocating, I lashed out. I didn't mean to cause collateral damage."
"Suffocating?" All Might’s smile softened into a look of genuine concern. He stepped closer, placing a massive, warm hand on Izuku's shoulder. "Were you injured, young man?"
"No!" Izuku squeaked, overwhelmed by the physical contact with his idol. "I-I'm indestructible! I mean, my fur is. But I need to breathe. So... yeah. But I'm fine!"
All Might raised an eyebrow. Indestructible? It was a bold claim, but looking at the absolute devastation the boy had caused just to escape a grapple, All Might didn't doubt it.
"Well, you acted in self-defense, and you secured the villain," All Might praised, giving Izuku a thumbs-up. "You have the instincts of a hero! Excellent work. I will take this scoundrel to the police, and then I must be on my way!"
All Might reached out to take the bottle.
"W-Wait!" Izuku blurted out, dropping to one knee and scrambling to pick up his ruined, sludge-covered notebook. He frantically flipped to a blank two-page spread. He procured his titanium pen and thrust it toward the giant man. "P-Please! An autograph! You're my hero! I've watched your debut video ten thousand times! You're the reason I want to go to U.A.!"
All Might laughed loudly. He took the notebook and the heavy metal pen. With practiced, lightning-fast speed, he scribbled his massive signature across the two pages.
"A U.A. hopeful, eh?" All Might handed the book back. "With power like yours, I have no doubt you will make an excellent addition to their ranks. Keep training hard, young man! The world always needs strong heroes!"
Izuku clutched the notebook to his chest like it was a holy relic. He bowed so fast and so hard he nearly created a wind tunnel. "Thank you! I will! I promise I'll be a hero who saves everyone with a smile!"
All Might smiled warmly. He tucked the bottle of sludge into his cargo pants pocket. "I look forward to seeing it. Now, stand back! A pro must always be ready to leap into action!"
All Might crouched low, his massive leg muscles coiling like springs.
Izuku stepped back, his eyes shining with unfiltered awe. He watched as his idol prepared to take off.
But as All Might tensed... a sudden, sharp hiss escaped his lips.
Izuku caught it instantly. His enhanced hearing, a passive byproduct of his beast-like nature, picked up the micro-fluctuations in All Might's breathing. He heard a wet, rattling sound deep within the hero's chest.
Before All Might could launch himself, a violent, rattling cough seized him.
All Might doubled over. Blood spattered onto the concrete floor of the tunnel.
Izuku froze. "A-All Might?"
A massive cloud of steam suddenly erupted from All Might's body, hissing violently and obscuring the giant man from view. The sheer volume of the steam forced Izuku to cover his face with his arms.
When the steam finally cleared, Izuku lowered his arms. He blinked. He rubbed his eyes. He blinked again.
The towering, seven-foot-tall mountain of muscle was gone. In his place stood a skeletal, emaciated man with sunken cheeks, hollow eyes, and a mop of messy blonde hair. His clothes hung off his gaunt frame like a scarecrow's garments. He was wiping a trail of blood from his chin with the back of a frail hand.
Silence descended upon the tunnel.
The skeletal man looked at Izuku. Izuku looked at the skeletal man.
"Um," Izuku said, his voice dropping an octave in sheer disbelief. "Did... did you deflate?"
The man sighed, a long, weary sound that rattled in his broken lungs. "Well. This is unfortunate."
"Y-You're an imposter!" Izuku shouted, taking a defensive stance. "Where is All Might?! What did you do to him?!"
"I assure you, kid, I am All Might," the skeletal man said tiredly. He sat down heavily on a chunk of fallen concrete, entirely exhausted. "Think of it like... guys at the pool who suck in their gut to look cool. It's like that."
"A fake out?!" Izuku screamed, his reality shattering. "But... but the muscle! The power! You're the Symbol of Peace!"
"And I still am," All Might said, his voice losing its booming echo, replaced by a quiet, solemn grit. "But even symbols have a time limit."
He lifted the left side of his t-shirt.
Izuku gasped. His heightened senses could smell the old blood, the scar tissue, the lingering scent of unnatural decay. Covering the entirety of All Might's left torso was a massive, horrific scar. It looked like an explosion of purple and red flesh, radiating outward like a spiderweb of trauma.
"I got this five years ago," All Might said softly, staring at the wound. "An enemy attack. Half my respiratory organs were destroyed. I lost my whole stomach. After repeated surgeries, my body just... wasted away. Right now, I can only do hero work for about three hours a day. The rest of the time, I look like this."
Izuku stared, horrified. His brilliant, analytical mind raced through the timeline. "Five years ago... was it the fight with Toxic Chainsaw?"
All Might looked up, mildly impressed. "You know your stuff. But no. I kept that punk out of the headlines. This fight... this was kept entirely under wraps. The public doesn't know. The Symbol of Peace cannot be seen as vulnerable. I am the pillar that holds up society. If that pillar shows a crack, the villains will rise, and the people will panic."
All Might looked directly into Izuku's eyes. The piercing blue of his gaze was exactly the same as the giant’s. "You cannot tell anyone about this, young man. Not your family, not your friends. Do you understand?"
Izuku swallowed hard. The immense weight of the secret settled onto his shoulders. He looked at the frail man before him—the man who carried the entire world on his back, despite his body breaking underneath the strain.
"I won't tell a soul," Izuku promised, his voice firm and unwavering.
"Thank you," All Might said, offering a weak but genuine smile. He carefully buttoned his shirt. "You saw past the illusion today. It's a heavy burden, being a hero. You have incredible power, kid. I saw what you did to the tunnel. You said your fur is indestructible?"
Izuku nodded slowly. "Yes, sir. It's... it's a Nemean Quirk. It creates a kinetic and thermal barrier that can't be breached. And it gives me super strength."
All Might leaned forward, resting his elbows on his bony knees. "A power like that... it's a double-edged sword. Tell me, young man. When you use your power, what do you feel?"
The question caught Izuku off guard. No one had ever asked him that. His mother just worried he would break the house. His classmates just feared he would break them.
Izuku looked down at his large, calloused hands. "I feel... scared."
All Might’s eyebrows rose. "Scared of the villains?"
"No," Izuku whispered. "Scared of myself. When the Quirk activates, it feels like there's a beast inside me. It wants to hunt. It wants to destroy. I spend every day calculating my movements so I don't accidentally shatter a door, or crush a pen, or... or hurt someone. Being indestructible means I don't have to worry about getting hurt. But it means I have to worry about hurting everyone else."
Izuku looked up, tears pricking his eyes. "Can... can someone with a power like a monster truly become a hero who saves people with a smile?"
The silence in the tunnel was profound. The distant sounds of the city traffic above seemed to fade away.
All Might stared at the boy. He saw past the towering physique and the dense muscles. He saw a fourteen-year-old child who carried the terrifying burden of overwhelming power, not with arrogance, but with terrifying, agonizing responsibility.
He didn't see a monster. He saw a guardian.
All Might stood up. He walked over to Izuku and placed a bony hand on the boy's massive shoulder.
"Young man," All Might said, his voice filled with absolute conviction. "The measure of a hero is not the nature of their Quirk, but the nature of their heart."
Izuku’s breath hitched.
"You hold back because you care," All Might continued, squeezing Izuku's shoulder. "A true monster does not fear his own strength. Only a true hero fears the damage he might cause. Your power is terrifying, yes. But it is exactly the kind of immovable pillar this society needs. You don't need to reject the beast. You need to master it. You need to become the king of your own power."
Tears spilled over Izuku's eyelids, trailing down his freckled cheeks. For ten years, he had feared his own shadow. For ten years, he had tried to make himself small.
"You can be a hero," All Might declared. "You can be the next Symbol of Peace."
Izuku fell to his knees, burying his face in his large hands, and wept. He sobbed uncontrollably, the heavy, baritone sounds echoing through the ruined tunnel. It was the release of a decade of pent-up terror and anxiety.
All Might stood silently, letting the boy cry. He looked at Izuku, and a strange, comforting thought crossed his mind. My time is running out. My body is failing. I need a successor for One For All.
But looking at Izuku Midoriya, All Might realized something profound. This boy did not need One For All. He did not need an inherited power to become great. He was already a titan. He already had the heart of a savior and the body of a god.
No, All Might thought, smiling softly. He doesn't need my Quirk. But perhaps... he needs a teacher.
"Stand up, young man," All Might said gently.
Izuku wiped his eyes, his massive shoulders heaving as he stood back up, towering over the skeletal hero. "I-I'm sorry. I just... I really needed to hear that."
"What is your name?" All Might asked.
"Midoriya. Izuku Midoriya."
"Well, Midoriya," All Might said, his blue eyes flashing with a renewed spark. "The U.A. Entrance Exam is ten months away. Raw power and indestructibility are incredible assets, but if you want to pass, you need to learn how to control that beast, not just cage it."
Izuku’s eyes widened. "Y-You mean..."
"Meet me at Dagobah Municipal Beach tomorrow at 6:00 AM," All Might said, turning to walk toward the exit of the tunnel. "We have a lot of work to do."
Izuku watched the frail man walk away, silhouetted against the light of the tunnel exit.
For the first time in his life, Izuku didn't feel the urge to suppress the beast within him. He felt the golden lion pacing in his chest, not with predatory malice, but with a fierce, burning pride.
He clenched his fist, the bones cracking loudly in the silent tunnel.
I'll do it, Izuku thought, a determined fire igniting in his emerald eyes. I'll become a hero. I'll become the shield that never breaks.
Dagobah Municipal Beach had once been a pristine stretch of coastline. Over the years, however, it had devolved into an illegal dumping ground, a metallic graveyard of rusted refrigerators, abandoned cars, and jagged scrap metal. It was a monument to society's neglect.
For the past ten months, it had also been Izuku Midoriya’s dojo.
"Control, Midoriya! Control is the difference between a hero and a wrecking ball!"
All Might’s voice echoed across the sand, sharp and commanding, despite the hero currently sitting in his skeletal, emaciated form atop a stack of discarded tires.
Down by the water, Izuku stood in front of a rusted, half-crushed pickup truck. He was clad in gym shorts and a tank top, sweat glistening on his pale skin. He wasn't transformed. His emerald eyes were locked onto the metal frame of the vehicle.
When All Might had taken Izuku on as a pupil, the training had not been about building muscle. Izuku already possessed physical strength that defied biological logic. The mutant aspect of his Nemean Quirk meant his bone density was akin to depleted uranium, and his muscle fibers were bundled like suspension bridge cables.
No, the training had been entirely about restraint.
"The beast inside you is a creature of absolutes," All Might had explained on their first day. "When you activate your Quirk, you become invulnerable. You become an unstoppable force. But society is fragile, Midoriya. The people you will save are fragile. If you hold a child with the same grip you use to tear apart a villain, you will kill them. You must learn to bridle your strength."
And so, the beach cleanup began. But the rule was strict: Izuku was not allowed to simply crush the trash into cubes or obliterate it. He had to lift decaying, structurally compromised appliances and carry them to the disposal trucks without letting them fall apart in his hands.
It was agonizing. To an apex predator, delicacy was the ultimate challenge.
Izuku breathed in, the salty ocean air filling his oversized lungs. He stepped forward and placed his hands underneath the rusted bumper of the pickup truck.
"Engage the Quirk, but only a fraction!" All Might instructed, leaning forward. "Don't let the fur manifest. Just the density shift!"
Izuku closed his eyes. He felt the familiar, volcanic heat flare in his solar plexus. The lion roared in the cage of his ribs, demanding to be let out, demanding to coat his skin in impenetrable gold. Izuku pushed back against the instinct. He visualized a dam, letting only a trickle of the golden energy flow into his arms.
His muscles swelled beneath his skin, straining the fabric of his tank top, but the golden fur did not break the surface.
With a slow, agonizingly deliberate motion, Izuku lifted.
The truck groaned. Flakes of rust rained down on his face. The metal frame began to buckle under its own weight as it left the sand. Izuku dynamically adjusted his grip, shifting his fingers to distribute the load perfectly across the chassis, applying just enough force to hold it, but not a single Newton more, lest his fingers punch straight through the steel.
He lifted the two-ton vehicle over his head, perfectly balanced.
"Excellent!" All Might cheered, coughing slightly into his hand. "Now, walk it to the truck! Light footsteps! Do not crack the pavement!"
Izuku carried the truck up the stairs to the road, his face a mask of supreme concentration. Ten months ago, he would have shattered the stairs and crushed the truck into a metal baseball. Today, he gently set the vehicle down into the bed of the transport truck with a soft clack.
He exhaled, wiping sweat from his forehead. The golden energy receded, settling quietly back into his chest.
"You've done it, young man," All Might said, walking up behind him. The hero looked out over the beach.
It was spotless. The morning sun reflected off the pristine white sand and the gentle, rolling waves. The skyline was clear, unobstructed by mountains of trash.
"You didn't just clean the beach," All Might said, pride radiating from his hollow eyes. "You mastered your own domain. You are no longer a passenger to your Quirk. You are its master."
Izuku looked at his hands. They were large, calloused, and heavy. But for the first time in his life, he didn't feel like they were weapons. He felt like they were tools.
"Thank you, All Might," Izuku bowed deeply, genuine gratitude swelling in his chest. "I'm ready."
"I know you are," All Might smiled. "Now go home, shower, and eat a massive breakfast. U.A. High is waiting."
The gates of U.A. High School were massive, arching into the sky like the entrance to a modern Olympus.
Izuku stood at the bottom of the front steps, staring up at the H-shaped glass building. He was wearing his Aldera Junior High uniform, though his mother had meticulously tailored it the night before to accommodate the sheer width of his chest and shoulders. Even in his relaxed, human state, Izuku looked less like a middle schooler and more like an Olympic powerlifter.
I'm here, Izuku thought, his heart hammering a frantic rhythm against his ribs. Ten months of hell. I'm actually here.
He took a step forward.
His left foot caught the edge of a slightly raised paving stone.
Because Izuku weighed roughly three hundred and fifty pounds—a byproduct of his hyper-dense mutant physiology—tripping was not a graceful affair. Gravity seized him, and he pitched forward like a felled redwood tree.
Oh no, Izuku thought, bracing his hands to catch himself so he wouldn't crack U.A.'s pristine walkway with his face.
Before he could hit the ground, a strange sensation washed over him. The pull of gravity vanished. Izuku hovered in mid-air, his nose two inches from the concrete.
"Are you okay?" a cheerful voice asked.
Izuku flailed his heavy arms, slowly rotating his body upright. Standing next to him was a girl with a short, bouncy brown bob, rosy cheeks, and a warm, bright smile. She had her hands clasped together.
"It's my Quirk," the girl explained, tapping her fingertips together. "Sorry for using it on you without asking, but it would be bad luck to fall right before the exam, right?"
"Y-Y-Yeah!" Izuku stammered, his face instantly erupting in a violent blush. He was floating. More importantly, he was talking to a girl. "Th-Thank you! I was just... I tripped! Clumsy!"
The girl giggled. "Wow, you're really heavy, though! Usually, it's super easy to float people, but I actually felt some pushback with you! Are you made of lead or something?"
She pressed her fingertips together and released the Quirk. "Release!"
Izuku dropped the remaining two inches. His boots hit the ground with a heavy, resonant THUD that caused the girl to blink in surprise.
"S-Something like that," Izuku mumbled, rubbing the back of his neck. "Dense bones. Um. Good luck on the exam!"
"Thanks! You too!" She pumped a fist in the air and bounded up the steps.
Izuku watched her go, a goofy, triumphant grin spreading across his face. I talked to a girl!
His internal celebration was violently interrupted by a shoulder aggressively slamming into his back. Given Izuku's mass, he didn't move an inch, but the person who hit him rebounded with a sharp curse.
"Get out of my way, Deku!" Katsuki Bakugo snarled, rubbing his shoulder as if he had just walked into a brick wall. Katsuki glared up at Izuku, his crimson eyes burning with that familiar, seething resentment.
"Morning, Kacchan," Izuku said politely, stepping slightly to the side.
Katsuki didn't say anything else. He just clicked his tongue, shoved his hands into his pockets, and marched up the steps, radiating hostile energy. Izuku sighed, following at a safe distance. The written portion of the exam was first, and Izuku felt supremely confident.
Two hours later, Izuku sat in the massive auditorium for the practical exam orientation. The Pro Hero Present Mic, the Voice Hero, stood at the DJ booth on stage, shouting the rules to an audience of highly stressed teenagers.
"WELCOME TO MY LIVE SHOW, EVERYBODY!" Present Mic roared, leaning back. "EVERYBODY SAY HEYYYY!"
Silence. Absolute, deafening silence.
Izuku was practically vibrating in his seat. The Voice Hero, Present Mic! His Quirk, Voice, allows him to amplify his vocal cords to staggering volumes! He's a legend in radio! Izuku’s hand blurred across his notebook, jotting down frantic observations.
Present Mic coughed into his hand, recovering quickly. "Tough crowd! Alright, listeners! Here's the rundown on the practical exam! You'll be experiencing a ten-minute mock cityscape battle! You can bring whatever you want! After this presentation, you'll head to your assigned Battle Centers!"
Izuku glanced at his test card. He was assigned to Battle Center B. He looked at Katsuki's card next to him. Katsuki was in Center A. They split up students from the same middle school so we can't cooperate, Izuku analyzed. Smart.
Present Mic clicked a button, and a screen behind him illuminated, showing three different types of robot silhouettes. "There are three types of faux villains in every battle center! They're worth one, two, or three points depending on their difficulty! Use your Quirks to dispatch as many as you can and rack up that high score!"
"Excuse me!"
A tall, broad-shouldered student with glasses and perfectly combed blue hair stood up abruptly. He pointed rigidly at the stage. "On the printout, there are four types of villains! If this is a misprint, then U.A., the most prominent academy in Japan, should be ashamed of that foolish mistake! We examinees are here because we wish to be molded into exemplary heroes!"
The student then spun around, pointing a rigid finger directly at Izuku. "And you! The one in the back with the massive shoulders!"
Izuku froze, his pen hovering over his notebook.
"You've been muttering this entire time!" the blue-haired student reprimanded sharply. "It is highly distracting! If you are here for a pleasure trip, then you should leave immediately! Your sheer physical presence is already intimidating enough; you do not need to add to the distraction!"
Izuku flushed, shrinking back into his seat as several students turned to look at him, their eyes widening at his sheer size. "I-I'm sorry," Izuku rumbled softly, closing his notebook.
"Okay, okay, examinee number 7111!" Present Mic interjected, pointing finger guns at the blue-haired boy. "Thanks for the great segue! The fourth villain type is worth zero points! It's a massive obstacle! There's one in every battle center, going crazy in narrow spaces! It's not impossible to defeat, but there's no reason to! I recommend running away from it!"
An obstacle, Izuku thought, his mind racing. A test of threat assessment and situational awareness.
"That is all from me!" Present Mic shouted. "I'll leave you with our school motto! Go beyond! PLUS ULTRA!"
Battle Center B was a sprawling faux-city, complete with skyscrapers, intersections, and streetlights. It looked terrifyingly real.
Izuku stood near the back of the massive crowd of examinees gathered in front of the towering gates. He recognized the nice girl with the gravity Quirk near the front, looking nervous. He wanted to go over and thank her again, but the blue-haired student from the auditorium intercepted him.
"She is trying to focus!" the boy said severely, adjusting his glasses. "Are you trying to sabotage her?"
"No! Not at all!" Izuku waved his large hands defensively.
"START!"
Present Mic’s voice boomed from the observation towers above.
The examinees at the gate froze, looking up in confusion. There had been no countdown.
"What's wrong? There are no countdowns in real battles!" Present Mic shouted. "Run, run, run! The die has been cast!"
Panic erupted. The students surged forward, sprinting through the open gates, pushing and shoving to get a head start.
Izuku did not sprint.
He took a deep breath. He let the cage open, just a crack.
The volcanic heat rushed into his legs. Beneath his pants, the muscles in his thighs and calves expanded violently. He didn't manifest the golden fur, but his density and kinetic output skyrocketed.
Izuku bent his knees and leaped.
BOOM.
The concrete beneath Izuku's feet shattered into a spiderweb crater. The shockwave knocked several straggling students off balance. Izuku launched himself into the air, soaring entirely over the heads of the running examinees. He arced through the sky, easily clearing the first block of buildings, and landed heavily in the center of an intersection deep within the city.
He hit the ground in a crouch, cracking the asphalt. Dust plumed around him.
Three robots—two One-Pointers and a Two-Pointer—turned their glowing red optical sensors toward him.
"Target acquired," the mechanical voices droned.
The Two-Pointer, possessing a mounted tail-cannon, fired a compressed tennis-ball-sized missile directly at Izuku.
Izuku didn't move. He didn't dodge. He just stood up.
The missile struck him dead in the center of his chest.
CRACK-BOOM.
Fire and smoke engulfed Izuku. A few students who had just rounded the corner screamed in horror, thinking they had just witnessed an examinee get blown apart.
But as the smoke cleared, Izuku walked out of the fire.
His Aldera uniform jacket was scorched and torn, but underneath, his skin was perfectly unblemished. He hadn't even lost his balance. He brushed a flake of ash off his shoulder, his emerald eyes sharpening into vertical slits.
The beast was awake.
Izuku took a step forward, closing the distance between himself and the Two-Pointer in the blink of an eye. He didn't pull back for a punch. He didn't throw a martial arts strike. He simply reached out with his massive, heavy hand and grabbed the robot by its armored chassis.
With a casual, effortless flick of his wrist, Izuku tore the robot in half.
Metal shrieked. Wiring sparked and snapped. Izuku tossed the two halves aside like discarded toys. He turned to the two One-Pointers. They lunged at him, metallic fists swinging. Izuku merely stepped into their attacks. The robots' fists shattered against Izuku's chest and shoulders, the kinetic force rebounding and destroying their own hydraulic arms.
Izuku swept his leg out, catching both robots in the shins and snapping their metal legs like dry twigs. They crashed to the ground, immobilized.
"That's four points," Izuku muttered, his deep voice calm and measured.
He broke into a run, moving deeper into the city.
What followed was not a test. It was a one-man demolition derby.
Izuku moved like a juggernaut. He didn't actively seek out the robots; he simply walked in a straight line, and whatever got in his way ceased to function. A Three-Pointer dropped from a rooftop to crush him? Izuku casually raised a hand, caught the three-ton machine in mid-air, and slammed it into a wall. A squad of Two-Pointers surrounded him and opened fire? Izuku stood there, letting the projectiles bounce harmlessly off his dense skin, before clapping his hands together. The resulting shockwave of compressed air blew the robots off their treads.
But Izuku was not mindless. Ten months with All Might had sharpened his heroic instincts to a razor's edge.
Whenever he saw another examinee struggling, he intervened. He stepped in front of a blue-haired boy (the one who had yelled at him), acting as an immovable shield against a barrage of rubber bullets, before ripping the offending robot's head off and offering it to the boy with a polite smile.
"Here," Izuku said over the din of battle. "I immobilized it, but you can finish it off for the points!"
Iida Tenya stared at the boy who had just tanked heavy artillery fire and casually decapitated a combat drone. "I... I do not need your pity points! But I appreciate the assist!" Iida yelled, sprinting away, thoroughly bewildered.
Izuku lost count of his points after fifty. The exam was too easy. The robots possessed neither the mass nor the firepower to threaten him, and because he was only using his baseline mutant density—holding back the Nemean transformation entirely—he wasn't even fatigued.
High above the battle centers, in a darkened observation room, the faculty of U.A. High watched the monitors in silence.
The screens displayed a chaotic array of explosions, ice attacks, lasers, and flying debris. But almost every teacher in the room was currently focused on the feed from Battle Center B.
"Who on earth is that kid?" the R-Rated Hero, Midnight, asked, leaning forward in her chair. She pointed a manicured finger at the screen showing Izuku casually walking through a barrage of missile fire. "He's not dodging. He's not even flinching. Is his Quirk a kinetic barrier?"
"No," a tired, raspy voice came from the back of the room. Shota Aizawa, Eraserhead, stood wrapped in his yellow sleeping bag, his bloodshot eyes fixed intensely on the screen. "Look closely at his movements. He’s heavy. When he steps, the asphalt gives way slightly. His mass is abnormal. He’s taking the hits because his physical density is too high for those low-caliber weapons to pierce."
"Astounding," the principal, a small, white, bear-mouse hybrid named Nezu, murmured, taking a sip of tea. "Izuku Midoriya. Registered Quirk: Nemean. It's classified as a Mutant/Transformation hybrid. What we are seeing is merely his baseline mutant physiology. He hasn't even activated the transformation aspect yet."
"He hasn't transformed?" Snipe, the cowboy-themed hero, asked incredulously. "He just tore a Three-Pointer in half with his bare hands!"
In the corner of the room, standing in his muscle-bound form, All Might beamed with pride. Look at him, All Might thought. He is absolute. He is holding back the beast, relying solely on his physical fortitude. He’s treating this exam with the respect it deserves, but protecting others in the process.
"He currently holds seventy-five villain points," Nezu calculated, checking a tablet. "He’s tied for first place with the explosive boy in Center A, Katsuki Bakugo. However, Midoriya has also accumulated a staggering amount of rescue points by shielding his fellow examinees."
Nezu smiled, a terrifying, hyper-intelligent glint in his black eyes. "Let's see how our invincible examinee handles a real threat."
Nezu reached out and flipped a large, red switch on the control panel.
Down in Battle Center B, the remaining two minutes of the exam were winding down. Izuku was standing in a clearing, brushing some dust off his heavily torn uniform pants, feeling slightly bored.
Suddenly, the ground beneath his feet violently lurched.
It wasn't a localized tremor. The entire faux-city began to shake. Glass shattered in the windows of the surrounding buildings. Sirens blared.
At the end of the main avenue, a towering shadow fell over the city block.
Izuku looked up. And up. And up.
Crashing through the skyscrapers as if they were made of cardboard was the Zero Pointer. It was a mechanical titan, a leviathan of steel, hydraulics, and weaponry that towered easily over two hundred feet tall. Its massive treads ground the city to dust, and its single, glowing red eye swept the streets like a lighthouse of doom.
"Less than two minutes remaining!" Present Mic's voice echoed over the PA system.
The examinees screamed. The bravado that had fueled them for the past eight minutes evaporated in the face of overwhelming, insurmountable scale. They turned and ran in the opposite direction, abandoning their fights to escape the path of the behemoth.
Izuku watched the robot. His analytical mind quickly assessed the situation. Massive size. Slow movement speed but huge area of effect. The destructive capability is off the charts. It's the obstacle. There are no points to be gained by fighting it. The most logical action is to retreat.
He turned to follow the other students.
"Ow! Please! Someone, help!"
The voice was faint, barely audible over the grinding gears of the massive robot. But Izuku’s enhanced, beast-like hearing caught it instantly.
He spun around, scanning the debris field left in the robot's wake.
Near the edge of the street, trapped beneath a massive slab of concrete that had fallen from a crushed building, was the nice girl with the gravity Quirk. She was pinning her hands to the rubble, trying desperately to lighten its load, but her face was pale, and she looked completely exhausted.
The Zero Pointer’s massive tread was rolling directly toward her. In less than ten seconds, she would be crushed.
The other students were still running. Iida stopped and looked back, his eyes widening in horror, but he realized instantly that he was too far away to reach her in time.
Izuku didn't think. He didn't calculate. He didn't worry about points, or the exam, or property damage.
The cage within his chest didn't just open. It shattered.
The beast was unleashed.
A guttural, deafening roar erupted from Izuku's throat. It was a sound that belonged in the prehistoric era, a primal, concussive wave of sound that shook the very air. The fleeing students clamped their hands over their ears, falling to their knees as the sheer volume of the roar disrupted their equilibrium.
Izuku’s body rapidly expanded. His U.A. track pants tore at the seams. He shot upward, his skeleton lengthening and thickening until he stood a towering, monstrous nine feet tall. His skin was entirely consumed by a blinding, brilliant layer of indestructible golden fur. His hands morphed into massive, devastating paws, and thick, black claws unsheathed with a metallic snikt. Around his neck and shoulders, a majestic, shimmering mane erupted, framing his glowing, vertical-slit emerald eyes.
He was the Nemean Lion.
The Zero Pointer raised a massive mechanical arm, preparing to smash the street into dust.
Izuku dug his massive golden claws into the asphalt. The ground beneath him spider-webbed, and then utterly caved in.
With a concussive blast that shattered the remaining windows on the street, Izuku launched himself. He didn't just jump; he became a golden missile. He shot upward, traversing the hundred-foot gap between the street and the robot's face in a fraction of a second.
The Zero Pointer’s optical sensor barely had time to register the incoming projectile.
Izuku collided with the center of the robot's face.
There was no struggle. There was no resistance. The golden fur, imbued with the mythological invulnerability of his Quirk, turned Izuku into an unbreakable bullet.
Izuku tore clean through the robot's reinforced steel skull. He entered through the face and exited out the back of the robot’s head, leaving a massive, jagged, gaping hole where the machine's primary processors used to be.
The momentum carried Izuku high into the sky. Behind him, the Zero Pointer froze. Internal explosions began to detonate rapidly within its chassis. Sparks showered down like rain. Slowly, majestically, the massive titan tilted backward, collapsing onto an empty sector of the city with an earth-shattering BOOM.
Izuku hung in the air for a moment, suspended against the clouds. He looked down at the ruined machine, feeling the roaring, primal satisfaction of a predator that had just slain a rival beast.
Gravity reclaimed him. He plummeted toward the earth. He didn't bother to brace himself. He landed feet-first on the asphalt with a sickening crunch, creating a crater ten feet wide. The impact sent a shockwave that kicked up a wall of dust.
Silence fell over Battle Center B. The only sound was the crackle of localized fires from the robot's destruction.
As the dust settled, the remaining examinees, including Iida, stared in absolute, paralyzing awe at the crater.
Slowly, a figure emerged from the smoke.
Izuku had reigned in the beast. He had reverted to his human form, though he was now entirely shirtless, as his upper garments had been completely shredded by the transformation. His massive, muscular chest heaved as he took deep breaths, the golden glow fading from his eyes.
He walked over to the trapped girl. He casually gripped the massive slab of concrete pinning her leg and lifted it with one hand, tossing it over his shoulder as if it were a couch cushion.
"Are you okay?" Izuku asked gently, offering her a large, heavy hand. His deep voice was polite and soft, a jarring contrast to the absolute devastation he had just caused.
Ochaco Uraraka stared up at the giant boy, then looked past him at the decapitated, burning remains of the two-hundred-foot robot. She looked back at Izuku.
"Y-Yeah," she squeaked, taking his hand. He pulled her up with terrifying ease, taking care not to squeeze her hand too tightly. "Th-Thanks."
"AND THAT'S TIME!" Present Mic shouted over the PA.
Izuku let out a long sigh of relief. He looked down at his ruined pants and bare chest. Mom is definitely going to kill me.
One Week Later.
The results of the entrance exam arrived in a small, circular projector disc.
Izuku sat at his desk in his bedroom, his mother standing nervously behind him. The projection of All Might flickered to life, revealing that Izuku had not only passed the written exam with flying colors but had utterly dominated the practical exam.
"Izuku Midoriya!" All Might's hologram boomed. "Villain Points: 75! Rescue Points: 60! A grand total of 135 points! You have completely shattered the previous record held by me! Welcome, young Midoriya. This is your hero academia!"
Izuku had cried. His mother had cried. It was a good day.
Now, standing in front of the massive, ceiling-high door labeled "1-A," Izuku felt a wave of nerves wash over him.
He reached out and slid the door open.
The classroom was already bustling. Izuku immediately spotted the blue-haired boy, Iida, currently lecturing Katsuki Bakugo for having his feet up on the desk.
"Remove your feet from the desk at once!" Iida chopped the air rigidly. "It is insulting to the upperclassmen who used it before us!"
"Huh? Like I care," Katsuki sneered, leaning back. "What middle school did you go to, you extra?"
Izuku took a deep breath and stepped into the room.
The moment his massive frame cleared the doorway, the argument stopped. Iida turned around, his eyes widening in recognition.
"It's you!" Iida marched over, standing incredibly stiffly in front of Izuku. Despite Iida being quite tall, Izuku still looked down at him. "I am Tenya Iida! I must apologize! I completely misjudged you during the exam. You realized there was a hidden rescue metric and acted without hesitation! I, who only saw the obstacle, am inferior!"
"O-Oh, no, Iida-kun," Izuku waved his hands, instantly flustered. "I didn't know about the rescue points. I just... she was trapped. I had to help."
"That only makes your heroic spirit more commendable!" Iida boomed.
"Hey, you're the giant!"
Izuku turned to see the nice girl, Uraraka, practically bouncing over to him. "Your punch—or I guess, your jump—was amazing! You just blew right through that huge robot!"
Izuku felt the heat rising in his cheeks again. "I-It wasn't a big deal. I'm just glad you weren't hurt, Uraraka-san."
"DEKU!"
The screech of rage tore through the classroom. Katsuki had stood up from his desk, his chair clattering to the floor. His hands were sparking with miniature explosions, his face twisted in pure, unadulterated fury.
"You think you're better than me?!" Katsuki roared, stalking toward Izuku. "I saw the scoreboard! 135 points?! You were just showing off, you damn nerd!"
Izuku sighed. "Kacchan, please. Not on the first day."
"If you're just here to socialize and make friends, pack up your things and leave."
A low, exhausted voice came from the floor.
The entire class looked down. Lying in the doorway, encased in a bright yellow sleeping bag, was a haggard-looking man with messy black hair and heavy bags under his eyes.
The man unzipped the sleeping bag and stood up, revealing a dark jumpsuit and a scarf made of some sort of capture tape. He held up a small juice pouch and took a slow sip.
"I'm your homeroom teacher, Shota Aizawa," he drawled, looking at the stunned class. "Nice to meet you."
He reached into his sleeping bag and pulled out a stack of blue gym uniforms. "It took you eight seconds to quiet down. Time is a precious resource, and you lot are lacking in common sense. Put these on and head out to the P.E. grounds. We're doing a Quirk Assessment Test."
The sun beat down on the open athletic field. Class 1-A stood in their gym uniforms, shivering slightly under Aizawa’s intense, unblinking stare. Izuku’s uniform, predictably, was stretched to its absolute limit across his chest and shoulders.
"A Quirk Assessment Test?" Uraraka asked nervously. "What about the entrance ceremony? Or orientation?"
"If you want to be pro heroes, you don't have time for leisurely events," Aizawa said coldly. "U.A. is known for its unrestricted school traditions. That includes how I run my class. You've been doing physical fitness tests since junior high, but you were never allowed to use your Quirks. It's irrational. The Ministry of Education is dragging its feet."
Aizawa turned to Katsuki. "Bakugo, you finished first in the practical exam among the regular testers. What was your best softball throw in junior high?"
"Sixty-seven meters," Katsuki grunted.
"Try it with your Quirk," Aizawa instructed, tossing Katsuki a softball. "Stay in the circle. Anything goes, as long as you don't step out."
Katsuki stepped into the throwing circle, a vicious grin spreading across his face. He wound his arm back.
"DIE!" Katsuki roared.
With a deafening BOOM, a massive explosion erupted from Katsuki's palm, propelling the softball into the sky at incredible speed. It sailed over the field, trailing smoke, until it finally disappeared into the distance.
Aizawa held up a digital device. It beeped. He turned the screen to the class.
705.2 meters.
The class erupted in awe.
"Awesome! We can actually use our Quirks!"
"This looks like fun!"
Aizawa’s eyes darkened. "Fun, you say? You have three years here to become heroes. You think it's going to be fun and games?"
He smiled, and it was a terrifying, sadistic expression. "Right. Whoever places last in all eight tests will be judged as having no potential, and will be punished with expulsion."
The class gasped.
"Expulsion?!" Uraraka cried. "But it's the first day! That's totally unfair!"
"Natural disasters, highway pileups, rampaging villains," Aizawa listed off monotonously. "Calamity is always around the corner. Japan is full of unfairness. Heroes are the ones who correct that unfairness. If you wanted to go hang out at McDonald's with your friends, you picked the wrong school. For the next three years, U.A. will throw hardship after hardship at you. Go beyond. Plus Ultra. Now, overcome it."
Izuku clenched his massive fists. He's right. The real world doesn't care if you're ready. I have to give it my all.
The tests began.
The 50-meter dash was first. When it was Izuku’s turn, he lined up against Bakugo. Izuku didn't transform. He simply dropped to all fours, his heavy hands resting on the track.
When the starting pistol fired, Izuku engaged his mutant muscle fibers. He exploded off the line, the sheer kinetic force kicking up a cloud of dust. He crossed the finish line in 3.1 seconds, his heavy footfalls echoing like a galloping rhino. Katsuki blasted across in 4.1 seconds, screaming in rage at losing to Izuku's baseline speed.
Next was the grip strength test. Izuku picked up the digital dynamometer. He squeezed it gently. The machine read 500 kg before the plastic casing gave way and shattered in his hand. Izuku handed the broken pieces to a sighing Aizawa, apologizing profusely.
The standing long jump. Izuku leaped, clearing the sandbox entirely and landing on the grass twenty feet beyond it.
Finally, it was the ball throw.
Uraraka had just scored an infinity by removing the ball's gravity. The class was reeling from the display of power.
"Midoriya," Aizawa called out. "You're up."
Izuku stepped into the circle. He held the softball in his hand. It felt like a marble in his massive grip.
If I just use my baseline strength, I can probably throw it about five hundred meters, Izuku analyzed. But Aizawa-sensei wants us to push our limits. He wants to see our Quirks in action. I need to transform. Just my throwing arm.
Izuku took a breath. He visualized the cage. He cracked it open.
The volcanic heat rushed down his right arm. The muscles bulged hideously. In a flash of brilliant light, the skin on his right arm was replaced by thick, indestructible golden fur. His hand shifted into a massive, clawed paw, gently palming the softball.
He wound back, planting his heavy feet into the dirt. He felt the terrifying, beastly strength coiling in his shoulder. He prepared to throw.
Suddenly, the golden glow on his arm vanished.
The fur receded instantly, shrinking back into his skin. The massive paw shifted back into his human hand. His arm was still heavily muscled due to his mutant baseline, but the invulnerable, transformative aspect of his Quirk was completely gone.
Izuku stumbled, his balance thrown off by the sudden loss of mass in his arm. The softball flopped out of his hand and rolled a pathetic two meters away.
What? Izuku blinked in shock, staring at his arm. My Quirk... it shut off? The cage slammed shut on its own?
"I erased your Quirk."
Izuku looked up. Aizawa was glaring at him. His capture scarf was levitating around his neck like a nest of vipers, and his previously tired black eyes were glowing a bright, intimidating red.
Izuku gasped. Glowing eyes... erasing Quirks... The Underground Hero, Eraserhead! He works so deeply in the shadows that there's very little data on him!
"That entrance exam was definitely not rational enough," Aizawa criticized coldly. "Even a kid like you was accepted. From what I saw on the tapes, your Quirk is a highly volatile transformation. You rely completely on its invulnerability to bulldoze your way through problems. Let me guess: you were going to use that golden arm to throw the ball, completely ignoring the concussive backlash it would cause to the surrounding area?"
Izuku froze. Aizawa thought he was reckless.
"If you can't control your power, you are just a liability waiting to be rescued," Aizawa continued, his scarf slowly wrapping back around his neck as his eyes returned to black. "Your power might be absolute, but if you blast a crater into a civilian zone just to throw a punch, you're worse than a villain. You have zero control. I've returned your Quirk. Take your final throw. And know that if you show me that reckless beast again, I will expel you on the spot."
Aizawa stepped back.
The class was dead silent. Katsuki looked thrilled.
Izuku stood in the circle. He looked at the softball. He picked it up.
He thinks I have no control, Izuku realized. He thinks the transformation controls me. He thinks I'm going to cause a shockwave that will hurt the class.
Izuku remembered the beach. He remembered lifting a rusted truck without breaking it. He remembered ten months of agonizing restraint.
Izuku didn't get angry. He didn't panic. He just smiled. It was a small, confident smile that All Might had taught him.
Izuku gripped the ball. He didn't activate the Nemean transformation. He didn't summon the golden fur. He didn't even tap into the beast.
He widened his stance, dropping his center of gravity. He twisted his torso, coiling his hyper-dense mutant musculature. The veins in his massive arms bulged.
I don't need the beast to prove I have control, Izuku thought. I am the master of my own body.
Izuku threw the ball.
It wasn't a reckless, explosive release of Quirk energy. It was a perfect, bio-mechanically flawless baseball pitch, backed by a skeletal structure ten times denser than a normal human's and muscles capable of lifting cars.
WHOOSH.
The air cracked like a whip. The ball launched from Izuku's hand, a white blur that tore a physical trench through the dust of the field from the sheer air pressure of its wake. It sailed high into the sky, disappearing into the clouds long before gravity could even think about pulling it down.
Izuku exhaled, lowering his arm. He hadn't caused a shockwave. He hadn't endangered his classmates. He had just thrown a ball, really, really hard.
Aizawa stared at his device. The machine beeped frantically as it tracked the GPS tracker in the ball.
Aizawa turned the screen around.
895.4 meters.
"Aizawa-sensei," Izuku said, turning to look at his teacher, his emerald eyes calm and steady. "I have complete control. I can be a hero without breaking the world around me."
Aizawa stared at the giant boy. For a moment, the underground hero’s expression remained unreadable. Then, the corners of his mouth twitched upward into a terrifying, shark-like grin.
"This kid," Aizawa muttered to himself. "He's not a reckless beast at all. He's terrifyingly rational."
"DEKUUUUU!"
The scream was deafening. Katsuki Bakugo had completely snapped. Seeing Izuku not only beat his score, but do it without even using his invincible golden fur, broke Katsuki's fragile pride in half.
Katsuki lunged forward, his palms sparking violently. "WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT?! YOU DIDN'T EVEN USE YOUR QUIRK! STOP MOCKING ME, YOU DAMN NERD!"
Izuku didn't move. He didn't even raise his arms to defend himself. He just watched Katsuki charge with a tired expression.
Before Katsuki could reach him, Aizawa’s capture scarf lashed out like a whip, wrapping tightly around Katsuki’s torso and arms, binding him securely. Katsuki struggled, his explosions suddenly dying out as Aizawa’s eyes glowed red once more.
"What the... this cloth is stiff!" Katsuki growled, struggling violently.
"It's a carbon-fiber weapon woven with metal wire forged from a special alloy," Aizawa explained lazily, pulling the scarf tight. "Stop using your Quirk. I'm getting dry eye from keeping them open so much."
Aizawa blinked, releasing Katsuki, though keeping him wrapped. "We're wasting time. Whoever's next, step up."
Katsuki fell to his knees, panting, staring at the ground in sheer disbelief. Izuku walked past him, his heavy footsteps thudding softly on the grass.
"Good job, Midoriya-kun!" Uraraka cheered as Izuku rejoined the group.
"T-Thanks," Izuku smiled, his terrifyingly imposing presence instantly vanishing into his usual shy, awkward demeanor.
By the end of the day, Aizawa revealed that the expulsion threat was a logical ruse to draw out their maximum potential. The class sighed in relief.
When the final rankings were projected onto a holographic screen, Izuku’s name sat comfortably at the very top of the list in the 1 spot.
Katsuki Bakugo was in third place, behind Yaoyorozu.
As class was dismissed, Katsuki stormed out of the classroom, not saying a word to anyone, his aura radiating pure, homicidal intent.
Izuku packed his bags slowly. He looked down at his massive hands. He had survived the first day. He had proven his control. He was officially a student in the hero course of U.A. High.
But as he looked out the window at the setting sun, a quiet thought echoed in the back of his mind.
The tests were easy because they were predictable. But when real villains show up... when lives are on the line... will the cage hold? Or will the lion demand to be let out?
Izuku slung his bag over his shoulder. Whatever happened, he was ready.
The air in the Class 1-A locker room was thick with the scent of freshly minted synthetic fabrics, polished armor, and the nervous sweat of teenagers preparing for their first real taste of hero work.
Izuku Midoriya stood in front of a full-length mirror, adjusting the heavy, carbon-steel clasps on his gauntlets.
When he had submitted his costume registry forms before the school year began, the design company affiliated with U.A. High had called his mother three separate times to verify the measurements. They had assumed there was a typo. Fourteen-year-olds did not have sixty-inch chests. Fourteen-year-olds did not weigh over three hundred pounds with zero body fat.
But Izuku had an entirely different set of requirements. Because his Nemean Quirk was a Transformation hybrid, standard fabrics were a death trap. If he fully transformed in a regular suit, the sudden expansion of muscle and the eruption of his thick golden fur would either shred the clothes completely or bind him like a straightjacket.
The resulting costume was a marvel of tactical engineering.
Izuku wore a dark, forest-green bodysuit made from an experimental, hyper-elastic memory fiber. However, it was completely sleeveless, leaving his massive, heavily corded arms bare to accommodate the manifestation of his golden fur and claws. Thick, matte-black cargo pants, heavily reinforced with Kevlar weave, covered his legs, tucked into steel-toed combat boots that looked like they belonged on a heavy machinery operator. Across his chest and waist, he wore a customized black utility harness. He had foregone a mask; instead, a high, armored collar shielded his neck and lower jaw, designed to fold down seamlessly if his golden mane erupted.
He didn't look like a colorful comic book superhero. He looked like a mythological super-soldier.
"Whoa, Midoriya!" Eijiro Kirishima, a boy with spiky red hair and a hardening Quirk, walked over, his eyes wide. He punched Izuku lightly on the shoulder—or rather, he tried to. Kirishima’s fist connected with Izuku’s bicep with a dull, painful thud. Kirishima winced, shaking his hand. "Man, you are built like a brick house! That costume is manly as hell!"
"T-Thanks, Kirishima-kun," Izuku rumbled, his deep voice contrasting sharply with the shy, embarrassed blush spreading across his freckled face. "Your costume is really cool too. The gear aesthetic fits your Quirk perfectly."
"Hey, are we ready to go?" Denki Kaminari called out, adjusting a radio earpiece. "All Might is waiting!"
At the mention of their teacher, Izuku’s heart did a familiar, frantic flutter. He followed his classmates out of the locker room and down the long, echoing concrete tunnel that led to Ground Beta.
Sunlight spilled into the tunnel exit. As Class 1-A stepped out into the sprawling, hyper-realistic faux-city, they were greeted by the towering, impossibly muscular figure of the Symbol of Peace.
"THEY SAY THE CLOTHES MAKE THE MAN, YOUNG MEN AND LADIES!" All Might’s voice boomed, echoing off the concrete facades of the fake buildings. He stood with his hands on his hips, wearing his Silver Age hero costume. "BE EXCEEDINGLY PROUD! FROM HERE ON OUT, YOU ARE HEROES IN TRAINING!"
All Might’s blue eyes swept over the class, pausing for a fraction of a second on Izuku. The hero offered a subtle, knowing nod. Izuku felt a surge of pride.
"Now, it is time for Combat Training!" All Might declared.
Tenya Iida, clad in a gleaming, high-tech suit of white armor that made him look like a futuristic knight, raised a rigid, exhaust-piped arm. "Sensei! This is the battle center from the entrance exam. Will we be conducting urban cityscape maneuvers again?"
"NO!" All Might threw up a peace sign. "We will be moving ahead two steps! Most villain fights you see on the news take place outside. However, statistically, heinous villains are more likely to appear indoors! Kidnapping, house arrest, black market deals—in this hero-saturated society, truly intelligent villains hide in the shadows! For this class, you will be split into villains and heroes and fight two-on-two indoor battles!"
"Without basic training?" a frog-like girl named Asui asked, tilting her head.
"This is a practical application of your Quirks!" All Might explained, pulling out a small script from his pocket and reading it surreptitiously. "The villains have hidden a nuclear weapon somewhere in their hideout. The heroes must foil their plot. The heroes win by capturing the villains or touching the weapon before time runs out. The villains win by capturing the heroes or defending the weapon until time is up! Teams and opponents will be determined by drawing lots!"
The class lined up to draw from two separate boxes.
Izuku reached his massive hand into the "Heroes" box and pulled out a small black sphere with a white "A" printed on it.
"I'm Team A," Uraraka’s cheerful voice sounded next to him. Izuku looked down. She was wearing a skin-tight pink and black spacesuit with large, rounded boots and bracers.
"O-Oh! Uraraka-san!" Izuku stammered, his brain immediately short-circuiting at how form-fitting her costume was. He aggressively stared at a spot on the concrete wall three feet above her head. "It looks like we're a team! It's an honor working with you!"
"Yeah! Let's do our best!" Uraraka pumped her fist, totally oblivious to his panic. "Who are we up against?"
"I DECLARE THAT THE FIRST BATTLE WILL BE..."
All Might reached into the matchup boxes and pulled out two spheres.
"TEAM A WILL BE THE HEROES! TEAM D WILL BE THE VILLAINS!"
Izuku’s blood ran cold.
He slowly turned his head. Across the group of students, standing in a menacing, grenade-themed costume that featured massive, green gauntlets shaped like explosive shells, was Katsuki Bakugo.
Katsuki wasn't looking at All Might. He was looking dead at Izuku. His crimson eyes were blown wide, a terrifying, feral grin stretching across his face.
Katsuki’s teammate, Iida, was already lecturing him on strategy, but Katsuki wasn't listening. He was staring at Izuku, his palms crackling with miniature, popping explosions that filled the air with the sharp scent of burnt sugar.
"Wow," Uraraka said, noticing the murderous aura radiating from Bakugo. "Your friend looks really intense."
"He's... we have a complicated history," Izuku said softly, his massive shoulders slumping slightly.
All Might’s booming voice snapped everyone back to reality. "The villain team will head in first and set up! The hero team will follow five minutes later! Everyone else, head to the monitor room!"
Inside the dim, concrete confines of the multi-story building, Katsuki and Iida stood in a large, empty room on the fifth floor. In the center sat a massive, papier-mâché missile.
Iida paced around it, tapping his chin. "So this is a nuclear weapon. We must protect it at all costs. The hero team has Uraraka, whose Quirk can negate gravity, and Midoriya, whose physical strength and durability are absolutely staggering. In a head-on clash, Midoriya is a severe threat."
Katsuki didn't respond. He stood near the doorway, staring into the dark hallway.
"Bakugo?" Iida called out. "Are you listening? We need to establish a defensive perimeter."
"Shut up, Four-Eyes," Katsuki growled, his voice a low, gravelly vibration. "I don't care about the stupid weapon. I don't care about the gravity girl."
He raised his hands, looking at the massive, heavy grenade gauntlets strapped to his forearms.
"That damn nerd," Katsuki whispered, his voice trembling with a terrifying mix of rage and desperation. "He's been looking down on me for ten years. Pretending he's so high and mighty just because he's a walking brick wall. Acing the mock exams. Acing the Quirk apprehension test. Trying to act like some kind of untouchable god."
Katsuki slammed his fists together, a large explosion echoing off the concrete walls. "He thinks he can't be broken. He thinks my explosions are just fireworks. I'm going to blow his indestructible fur to ash. I'm going to make him bleed."
Iida took a step back, genuinely unsettled by the sheer, homicidal intensity radiating from his teammate. "Bakugo, this is a training exercise! You cannot seriously intend to—"
"I'm going to hunt him down," Katsuki interrupted, stepping out into the hallway. "You guard the bomb. If anyone gets near it, kick them. I've got a pebble to crush."
With that, Katsuki stalked down the stairs, leaving Iida alone in the room.
Outside the building, Izuku and Uraraka stood waiting for the buzzer.
"Midoriya-kun," Uraraka said gently, noticing the deep, troubled frown on Izuku's face. "Are you okay? You look really worried."
Izuku sighed, running a heavy hand through his unruly green curls. "Uraraka-san... Kacchan is going to come for me. He won't care about the objective. He won't care about the weapon. He's been obsessed with proving his Quirk is stronger than mine since we were kids."
Uraraka frowned. "But you're practically indestructible, right? During the exam, you didn't even flinch when robots shot at you."
"That's exactly why he hates me," Izuku said, his voice laced with a profound sadness. "Kacchan’s entire worldview is built on his own absolute superiority. His Quirk is incredible. He is a genius. He works harder than anyone I know. But because my Quirk makes me physically invulnerable, he feels like he can never truly win. He feels like I'm mocking him just by existing."
Izuku looked up at the building. "When we go in, he's going to ambush us. He'll target me exclusively. When that happens, I need you to run. Find the weapon and secure it. I'll keep Kacchan occupied."
Uraraka nodded, her face hardening with determination. "Okay. I trust you."
BZZZZZT.
The harsh sound of the buzzer echoed across Ground Beta.
"HERO TEAM, YOU MAY INFILTRATE!" All Might announced over the comms in their ears.
Izuku and Uraraka slipped through an open window on the ground floor. The interior of the building was dark, a maze of narrow concrete corridors and blind corners.
Izuku led the way. He walked with agonizing care, placing each massive foot down gently so his dense weight wouldn't echo through the floors. His ears twitched. His mutant physiology granted him hearing far beyond a normal human's. He could hear the hum of the ventilation shafts, Uraraka's nervous breathing behind him, and...
Footsteps.
Light, rapid, aggressive footsteps. Coming from the corridor directly ahead, just around the corner.
Izuku stopped dead in his tracks. He threw his right arm out, blocking Uraraka from moving forward.
"Midoriya?" she whispered in confusion.
The air suddenly smelled intensely of burnt caramel.
He's here.
Before Izuku could speak, the corner of the hallway exploded.
Katsuki didn't just walk around the corner; he launched himself around it using an explosion from his left palm as a thruster. He spun in mid-air, his right hand extended, aiming a vicious, point-blank blast directly at Izuku’s face.
"DEKU!" Katsuki screamed.
The explosion was blinding. A concussive shockwave of fire and smoke filled the narrow corridor, shattering the glass in a nearby window and forcing Uraraka to cover her ears and squeeze her eyes shut as she was pushed backward.
The smoke billowed, thick and choking. Katsuki landed on his feet, skidding backward slightly on the concrete. He breathed heavily, a feral grin plastered on his face. Got him. Point blank to the face. Let's see you ignore that, you damn nerd.
The smoke slowly began to clear.
Standing in the center of the corridor was a silhouette. It hadn't been knocked down. It hadn't even taken a step backward.
As the gray haze dissipated, Izuku was revealed.
He was holding his right forearm up, having casually blocked the explosion with his bare skin. The sleeve of his U.A. track jacket (which he had worn over his costume) was completely incinerated, but the skin beneath was entirely unblemished. There wasn't a single scorch mark.
Izuku lowered his arm, looking at Katsuki with an expression of deep, tragic resignation.
"Kacchan," Izuku rumbled softly. "A surprise attack? You know that doesn't work on me."
Katsuki’s grin vanished. The muscle in his jaw jumped frantically. "Shut up," he hissed, the sparks in his palms flaring back to life. "I didn't use full power. I'm just warming up."
Izuku didn't take the bait. He didn't square up for a fight. Instead, he slowly, deliberately reached up to the collar of his incinerated jacket and unzipped it, letting the ruined fabric fall to the floor, revealing his sleeveless green tactical suit beneath.
"Uraraka-san," Izuku said, not taking his glowing green eyes off Bakugo. "Go. He's not going to let me pass. Find Iida."
"R-Right!" Uraraka scrambled backward, turning and sprinting down a side corridor, her boots echoing against the concrete.
Katsuki didn't even glance at her. His tunnel vision was absolute. His entire universe had shrunk down to the giant, indestructible boy standing in front of him.
"You're not even going to fight me, are you?" Katsuki growled, his voice vibrating with a terrifying mix of fury and pain. "You're just going to stand there like a statue. Like you always do. Looking down on me."
"I'm not looking down on you," Izuku said, his deep voice calm. "I have never looked down on you, Kacchan. You are amazing. Your Quirk is versatile, powerful, and brilliant. But..."
Izuku clenched his massive fists. He let the cage open, just a fraction.
The air in the hallway instantly grew oppressively hot. A golden, luminescent aura began to radiate from Izuku’s bare arms and neck. Thick, shimmering golden fur erupted across his forearms, dense and majestic. His hands broadened, his knuckles popping loudly as they shifted, but he stopped short of unsheathing his claws. He kept the transformation partial—just enough to activate the absolute thermal and kinetic invulnerability on the areas Katsuki was most likely to strike.
"But I cannot be broken," Izuku finished softly. "And I refuse to hurt you to prove it."
That was the worst thing he could have possibly said.
"I'LL KILL YOU!" Katsuki roared, the sheer volume of his scream tearing at his vocal cords.
He launched himself forward, leading with a vicious right hook heavily augmented by a localized explosion. Izuku didn't dodge. He simply raised his left, golden-furred forearm.
BOOM.
Katsuki’s fist connected with Izuku’s arm. The explosion detonated point-blank. The concrete floor beneath them cracked from the kinetic backlash, but Izuku’s arm didn't move a single millimeter. It was like Katsuki had punched a mountain.
Katsuki didn't stop. He gritted his teeth, his eyes wide and bloodshot, and unleashed a flurry of attacks.
He spun, delivering an explosion-powered roundhouse kick to Izuku’s ribs. Izuku shifted his weight, letting the kick land. The force was enough to shatter a car engine, but against Izuku’s hyper-dense mutant physiology, it merely elicited a dull thud.
"FIGHT BACK!" Katsuki screamed, firing a double-palm blast directly at Izuku’s chest.
Izuku crossed his golden-furred arms in front of his face, tanking the blast. The hallway filled with fire. The heat was astronomical, melting the paint off the walls and turning the air into a suffocating oven.
Up in the monitor room, Class 1-A watched the screens in absolute, horrified silence.
The thermal cameras showed Bakugo’s heat signatures spiking to dangerous levels. The shockwaves were shaking the very foundations of the camera feeds.
"This is insane!" Kaminari yelled, gripping the railing. "Bakugo is going to kill him! Sensei, you have to stop this!"
All Might stood rigidly, his knuckles white as he gripped the microphone on the console. He was sweating. Young Bakugo's pride is driving him to the brink. But look at Young Midoriya.
On the screen, the smoke cleared again.
Izuku was still standing. He had been pushed back perhaps two inches by the sheer concussive displacement of the air, but he was entirely unharmed. His golden fur caught the flickering light of the residual flames, shimmering with an ethereal, unbreakable majesty. He wasn't even breathing hard.
"He's not fighting back," Mina Ashido whispered, her eyes wide. "Midoriya hasn't thrown a single punch."
"He can't," Shoto Todoroki, a boy with half-white, half-red hair, observed coldly. His mismatched eyes were locked onto the screen. "Look at the sheer mass of Midoriya's arms. Look at how the concrete cracked just from him bracing himself. If Midoriya actually swings at Bakugo, with that kind of density and the kinetic output of his Quirk... he would likely kill him."
The class went dead silent, the horrifying reality of Todoroki's observation sinking in.
"He's not arrogant," Momo Yaoyorozu realized, a hand covering her mouth. "He's holding back out of pure mercy."
Back in the hallway, Katsuki was panting heavily. Sweat poured down his face, his chest heaving as he stared at the unblemished, golden-furred giant in front of him.
His hands were aching. The recoil of his own explosions was beginning to tear at his muscles, but Izuku hadn't even blinked.
"Why?" Katsuki choked out, his voice cracking. Tears of pure frustration gathered in the corners of his crimson eyes. "Why won't you fall? Why won't you just stay down?!"
"Because I have to be a hero too, Kacchan," Izuku said, his voice rumbling through the smoke. "And a hero has to be an unshakeable pillar for people to rely on. Even you."
"I DON'T NEED YOUR DAMN PITY!" Katsuki shrieked.
He jumped backward, creating twenty feet of distance between them. He raised his right arm, grabbing the small metal pin located on the massive, grenade-shaped gauntlet on his forearm.
Izuku’s eyes widened. He recognized the design. Those gauntlets weren't just for show. They were storage tanks. Katsuki had been sweating nitroglycerin this entire time, storing the excess fluid in the gauntlet for a massive, concentrated blast.
"If they designed this right," Katsuki panted, a manic, desperate smile stretching across his face, "these gauntlets have stored up all the sweat from my warm-up."
Up in the monitor room, All Might’s eyes widened in horror. He leaned over the console, slamming the comms button.
"YOUNG BAKUGO, STOP!" All Might boomed into the microphone. "ARE YOU TRYING TO KILL HIM?! IF YOU USE THAT IN A CONFINED SPACE, THE STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY—"
"HE WON'T DIE IF IT DOESN'T PIERCE THAT DAMN FUR!" Katsuki screamed back, entirely consumed by madness.
Katsuki ripped the pin out.
Time seemed to stop.
Izuku didn't run. There was nowhere to run. The hallway was too narrow. If he dodged, the blast would travel down the corridor, potentially blowing out the load-bearing walls and bringing the entire building down on top of Uraraka and Iida.
I have to contain it, Izuku realized instantly.
He didn't fully transform. If he fully transformed into the nine-foot Nemean Lion, his sheer size would break the walls before the explosion even hit. Instead, he forced the golden fur to spread instantly from his arms, covering his chest, his torso, and his face. He became a shimmering, golden wall.
He planted his feet, digging his heavy boots deep into the concrete floor to anchor himself, and crossed his arms in an 'X' over his chest.
I'm sorry, Kacchan, Izuku thought.
The gauntlet fired.
It wasn't an explosion. It was a localized solar flare. A blinding, deafening pillar of white-hot fire erupted from Katsuki's arm, instantly consuming the entire width of the hallway. The sheer thermal energy flashed the paint on the walls to ash in a microsecond.
The blast wave hit Izuku.
The sound was apocalyptic. The entire five-story building groaned violently, tilting slightly on its axis. Windows on every single floor shattered simultaneously, showering the fake street below in a rain of glass.
In the monitor room, the camera feeds in the hallway instantly blew out, reducing the screens to static.
"MIDORIYA!" the class screamed in unison.
Inside the hallway, Izuku felt the pressure. It was immense. The kinetic force of the blast was like standing in the path of a bullet train. His boots scraped backward, carving two deep, jagged trenches into the reinforced concrete floor, but he did not fall. The heat was astronomical, hot enough to melt steel, but the Nemean fur was an absolute thermal barrier. He felt no pain. He felt no burning. He only felt the pressure.
And then, it was over.
The blast dissipated, tearing a massive hole through the exterior wall of the building and venting out into the open air.
Silence fell over the ruined corridor, broken only by the crackle of localized fires and the hiss of superheated concrete cooling in the air.
Katsuki stood at the end of the hall, his right arm trembling violently from the recoil. The gauntlet was smoking. He was gasping for air, his vision swimming from the exertion.
He stared into the thick, black smoke blocking the hallway.
I did it, Katsuki thought, his mind frantic. I had to have done it. Nothing can survive that. I proved it. I'm the strongest.
The smoke shifted.
A heavy, deliberate footstep echoed through the ruin.
Thud.
Katsuki’s breath hitched. His eyes widened to the size of saucers.
Thud.
From the smoke, Izuku Midoriya walked forward.
His U.A. tactical suit, designed to be highly durable, was completely gone from the waist up. The Kevlar pants remained, singed and blackened, but his upper body was exposed.
The golden fur slowly receded, pulling back into his skin, revealing his incredibly dense, heavily muscled torso.
He was entirely, utterly, fundamentally unharmed.
There was not a burn mark on his skin. There was not a drop of sweat on his brow. His hair was slightly blown back, but his emerald eyes were calm, glowing with a soft, sympathetic light.
He hadn't been broken. He hadn't even been inconvenienced.
Katsuki took a step back. His legs hit a piece of rubble. He stumbled, collapsing onto his rear end. He couldn't speak. His brain simply refused to process the reality in front of him. A blast that had blown a hole through a reinforced concrete building hadn't even left a smudge on his rival's skin.
"I told you, Kacchan," Izuku said, his voice echoing in the ruined hall. It wasn't gloating. It wasn't mocking. It was a statement of tragic, immutable fact. "I cannot be broken."
Katsuki looked at his trembling hands. The hands that had trained for a decade. The explosions that had made him the king of his middle school. They meant absolutely nothing. He was an ant trying to move a mountain.
"Ah..." Katsuki choked, a pathetic, broken sound escaping his throat. "Ah... damn it..."
Izuku didn't want to hurt him anymore. He didn't want to drag this out.
In a blur of speed that belied his massive size, Izuku closed the twenty-foot gap. Before Katsuki could even register the movement, Izuku was standing over him.
Izuku reached down. He didn't strike. He simply placed one massive, heavy hand on Katsuki’s chest, pressing him gently but immovably against the floor.
Katsuki couldn't move. The sheer density and weight of Izuku’s hand felt like a lead vault door had been placed on top of him. He struggled, but it was useless.
"You fought well, Kacchan," Izuku whispered, his eyes filled with sorrow. "But this match is over."
Izuku reached up with his free hand and tapped his earpiece. "Uraraka-san. What's your status?"
Static crackled in his ear, followed by the sound of heavy breathing. "I found it! I'm on the fifth floor! Iida cleared the room of all loose objects, so I couldn't use anything as a weapon, but I just grabbed a pillar and swung myself over him while the building was shaking from that huge explosion! I touched the weapon!"
"HERO TEAM WINS!" All Might’s voice boomed over the PA system, though it sounded incredibly relieved.
Izuku let out a long breath. He removed his hand from Katsuki's chest and stood up, offering his hand to his childhood friend.
Katsuki didn't take it. He just lay there on the ruined concrete, staring blankly at the ceiling. The fight was over, but Katsuki Bakugo’s reality had been utterly, irreparably shattered.
The monitor room was silent when Izuku and Uraraka finally returned.
Izuku had found a spare jacket in the locker room to throw over his bare chest, though it barely fit his massive shoulders. He walked in, his head bowed slightly, expecting to be reprimanded for the sheer amount of property damage he and Katsuki had caused.
Instead, the class parted like the Red Sea, looking at him with a mix of absolute awe and terrified respect.
"Man," Kirishima breathed, breaking the silence. "Midoriya... you're a monster. And I mean that in the most respectful, heroic way possible. You just tanked a localized nuke without flinching."
"Your defensive capabilities are beyond calculation," Momo Yaoyorozu added, her eyes gleaming with analytical fascination. "The thermal threshold of your golden fur must defy the laws of thermodynamics."
"I-It's just my Quirk," Izuku mumbled, rubbing the back of his neck, his face turning bright red as Uraraka patted his heavy arm. "I couldn't have won without Uraraka-san securing the objective."
All Might cleared his throat, stepping to the front of the room. He looked at Izuku, a deep sense of pride swelling in his chest, before turning his attention to Katsuki, who was standing in the corner, staring vacantly at the floor, his gauntlets discarded.
"WELL FOUGHT, EVERYONE!" All Might announced. "HOWEVER, DESPITE THE HERO TEAM'S VICTORY, CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHO THE MVP OF THIS MATCH WAS?"
The class murmured.
"It was Midoriya, obviously," Kaminari said. "He was indestructible."
"Actually, no," a voice said.
Everyone turned to Momo Yaoyorozu. She stepped forward, her posture perfect.
"The MVP of this match was Tenya Iida," Momo declared.
Iida, who had been looking dejected over losing the weapon, perked up in surprise.
"Why is that, Young Yaoyorozu?" All Might asked, smiling.
"Because Iida was the only one who adapted to his role and prioritized the objective," Momo explained clearly, addressing the class. "Bakugo was consumed by a personal grudge. He abandoned his post, ignored his teammate, and unleashed a lethal attack indoors that compromised the structural integrity of the very building he was supposed to be defending. If this were a real nuclear scenario, he would have killed everyone and detonated the bomb."
Katsuki flinched, his hands balling into fists, but he didn't argue. He couldn't.
"Uraraka did well to secure the weapon," Momo continued. "But her approach was reckless, relying on the confusion of Bakugo's blast to bypass Iida. Midoriya..."
Momo turned to look at Izuku. "Midoriya is a complicated case. His durability is absolute, which allowed him to act as an perfect shield. However, he allowed himself to be stalled. He recognized Bakugo's grudge and engaged him in a battle of attrition rather than incapacitating him immediately to assist his partner. He played the role of a martyr, not a tactician."
Izuku winced. She was right. He had held back not just for Katsuki's sake, but because he was terrified of his own strength. If he had just used his speed to knock Katsuki out, the fight would have ended in seconds.
"EXCELLENT ANALYSIS!" All Might boomed, giving Momo a thumbs-up. "Being a hero isn't just about raw power! It is about assessing the situation, working with your team, and executing the objective! Take these lessons to heart!"
The rest of the class matches proceeded. Izuku watched closely, taking rapid notes in his notebook (which he had fetched from his locker), his analytical mind absorbing the Quirks and strategies of his classmates. Shoto Todoroki froze an entire building in seconds. Tokoyami’s Dark Shadow displayed terrifying agility.
When the class finally ended, the students began to head back to the main building to change.
Izuku lingered behind. He saw Katsuki walking away from the group, his posture slouched, his head down.
"Kacchan," Izuku called out softly.
Katsuki stopped. He didn't turn around. His shoulders were trembling slightly.
"Leave me alone, Deku," Katsuki said. His voice wasn't a roar. It wasn't a snarl. It was hollow. Empty.
"I'm not trying to gloat," Izuku said, taking a step forward. "I just... I want you to know that I never thought I was better than you. Today didn't prove I'm a better hero. It just proved my Quirk is hard to break. Yaoyorozu was right. You have better instincts than I do. You just let your anger blind you."
Katsuki slowly turned his head. His crimson eyes were wet, though he refused to let the tears fall.
"I saw the ice guy," Katsuki whispered, his voice cracking. "Todoroki. I saw what he did. And I saw what you did. I... I came to this school thinking I was the undisputed best. But I'm not. I couldn't even scratch you."
Katsuki turned fully around, glaring at Izuku, though the venom was gone, replaced by a desperate, burning resolve.
"Enjoy it while it lasts, Deku," Katsuki choked out, wiping his eyes aggressively with his forearm. "I'm not done. I'm going to figure it out. I'm going to find a way to break your stupid fur. I'll become the number one hero, and I'll leave you in the dust! I won't lose to you again!"
He turned and marched away, his pace hurried, desperate to escape before Izuku could see the tears finally spill.
Izuku watched him go. A small, sad smile tugged at his lips.
He's not broken, Izuku thought, a strange sense of relief washing over him. His pride took a massive hit, but he's already using it to push himself further.
"Young Midoriya."
Izuku turned. All Might was standing near the tunnel entrance, currently in his deflated, skeletal form. The hero walked over, looking at the destroyed building in the distance.
"You did well today," All Might said softly. "You showed incredible restraint. You protected your friend, even when he was trying to destroy you."
"I could have ended it faster," Izuku admitted, looking down at his large hands. "I just... I was so afraid of hitting him. Even a tap from me could break his ribs. I don't know how to fight people without killing them, All Might."
All Might placed a bony hand on Izuku's heavy shoulder.
"That is the paradox of ultimate power, my boy," All Might said wisely. "When you are a giant among men, you must move with the grace of a dancer. You have mastered restraint against inanimate objects. Now, you must learn restraint in combat. You must learn the martial arts of the gentle giant."
All Might smiled, his blue eyes twinkling. "But do not despair. You proved today that you are an unshakeable wall. And in this world, sometimes a wall is exactly what people need."
Izuku nodded, a renewed sense of purpose filling his chest. He still had a long way to go. He still feared the beast inside him. But he was learning to direct it. He was learning to be the shield.
As they walked back to the school, Izuku couldn't help but look up at the sky. He was finally a student at U.A. High. He was on the path to becoming a hero.
He didn't know that in a few short weeks, a true monster would test the limits of his unbreakable cage. A monster designed not to be a hero, but to kill the Symbol of Peace himself.
But that was a battle for another day. Today, the Golden Cub had roared, and the world had survived it.
The bus ride to the Unforeseen Simulation Joint was supposed to be a mundane, relaxing trip.
Inside the spacious cabin, the students of Class 1-A chatted idly, the hum of the engine providing a steady baseline to their adolescent excitement. Izuku Midoriya sat near the back, his massive frame taking up two seats. He was currently hunched over his notebook, using his custom titanium pen to sketch a rough schematic of Uraraka’s space suit, muttering quietly about weight distribution and gravitational vectors.
"Midoriya, I say whatever comes to mind," Tsuyu Asui, the frog-like girl, said suddenly, turning her large, dark eyes toward him.
Izuku blinked, snapping his notebook shut. He sat up straight, his head nearly brushing the roof of the bus. "O-Oh! Um, yes, Asui-san?"
"Call me Tsu," she corrected bluntly. "Your Quirk is pretty crazy. You're practically indestructible, but you also have that beast form. It's like All Might's strength, but mutated into a defensive wall."
Izuku rubbed the back of his neck, his cheeks flushing. "I-I guess you could say that. But All Might is in a league of his own. He saves everyone with a smile. I just... I try not to break things."
"Don't be so modest, man!" Eijiro Kirishima leaned over the aisle, grinning widely. "You took a point-blank explosion from Bakugo and didn't even blink! My Hardening Quirk is great for taking hits, but I'd be roasted if I took a blast like that."
At the front of the bus, Katsuki Bakugo’s posture stiffened. He didn't turn around, but the faint, acrid smell of burnt sugar wafted from his palms. Ever since the battle trial, Katsuki had been uncharacteristically quiet. He was brooding, his pride shattered, desperately trying to calculate a way to overcome the golden wall that was Izuku Midoriya.
"Well, if you're talking about flashy and strong, it's gotta be Todoroki, Bakugo, and Midoriya," Kirishima continued, oblivious to the tension.
"Bakugo is always mad, so he won't be popular," Tsu stated matter-of-factly.
"WHAT DID YOU SAY, FROG-FACE?! I'LL KICK YOUR ASS!" Katsuki exploded, leaping out of his seat and grabbing the railing.
"See?" Tsu pointed a webbed finger at him.
Izuku sighed softly, a fond but tired smile crossing his face. Despite his immense size and terrifying power, sitting here with his classmates made him feel... normal. For the first time in his life, he wasn't a pariah or a ticking time bomb. He was just a hero-in-training.
"We're here," Aizawa’s tired voice cut through the bickering. "Stop messing around."
The bus hissed to a stop.
Stepping off the vehicle, the class looked up in awe at the massive, domed structure before them. It looked like an indoor stadium, gleaming in the morning sun.
Waiting for them at the entrance was a figure clad in a bulky, white astronaut suit.
"Hello, everyone! I've been waiting for you!" the Pro Hero Thirteen greeted cheerfully. "Welcome to the Unforeseen Simulation Joint! Or, as I like to call it, the USJ!"
The class murmured in excitement as they followed Thirteen inside. The interior was breathtaking. It was a sprawling, multi-zoned facility containing a shipwreck on a massive indoor lake, a landslide zone, a simulated fire metropolis, and a rocky mountain range.
"Before we begin," Thirteen said, raising three fingers. "I have one, or two, or three, or four points to make... As you all know, my Quirk is Black Hole. I can suck up and tear apart any material on a molecular level. It is highly effective for rescue operations in disaster sites."
Thirteen paused, the cheerful tone dropping into something far more solemn. "However, it is also a power that could easily kill. In a superhuman society, Quirks are heavily regulated, and we often forget how fatal they can be. Aizawa-sensei's physical test taught you the true potential of your powers, and All Might's battle trial taught you the danger of using them against others. Today, you will learn how to use your Quirks to save lives."
Izuku felt a chill run down his spine. He looked at his massive, calloused hands. A power that could easily kill. Thirteen’s words resonated perfectly with the fear he had carried for ten years.
Suddenly, the lights illuminating the massive dome flickered.
With a loud, electrical SNAP, the facility's power grids shut down. The massive floodlights overhead died, plunging the outer edges of the dome into shadows.
Down in the central plaza, directly in front of a large fountain, the air began to warp. It looked like a tear in the fabric of reality, a swirling vortex of dark, violent purple mist.
Aizawa’s head snapped toward the plaza. His slouched, tired posture vanished instantly. "Gather together and don't move!" he barked, his voice echoing with absolute authority. "Thirteen, protect the students!"
"Sensei, what's that?" Kirishima asked, stepping forward.
From the purple mist, a hand reached out. It was deathly pale, grasping the edge of the portal. Then, a man stepped through. He was covered in disembodied, grayish hands clutching his arms, his face, and his neck. Through the gaps of the hand on his face, a single, bloodshot red eye peered out, radiating pure, unadulterated malice.
Behind him, dozens—no, hundreds—of figures began pouring out of the portal. Mutants, thugs, and criminals armed with various makeshift weapons flooded the plaza.
And right beside the man covered in hands stood a hulking, unnatural monstrosity. It was roughly seven feet tall, its skin a bruised, sickly black. Its brain was completely exposed, pulsating grotesquely at the top of its head, and its eyes were hollow, bird-like orbs staring blankly ahead.
"Villains," Aizawa stated grimly. He reached up, pulling his yellow goggles over his eyes, his capture scarf unraveling like a nest of vipers. "No way they got in here without an inside man. This is a coordinated attack."
"Villains?!" Mineta shrieked, clutching his purple, ball-shaped head. "In a hero school?! That's impossible!"
"Thirteen, begin evacuation. Try calling the school," Aizawa ordered, leaping down the massive staircase toward the plaza. "These villains had something planned to counteract the sensors. I'm going in."
Izuku stepped forward, his heart hammering against his ribs. "Sensei, you can't fight them all alone! Your Quirk is for stealth and one-on-one combat! Even if you erase their Quirks, there are too many!"
Aizawa didn't look back. "You can't be a pro if you only have one trick."
With that, Aizawa threw himself into the horde.
"We need to go!" Thirteen urged, corralling the students toward the heavy steel doors they had just entered.
Before they could reach the exit, the purple mist that had transported the villains suddenly bloomed in front of them, blocking the doors. Two glowing yellow eyes opened within the swirling vortex.
"I am afraid I cannot allow that," the mist spoke, a deep, polite, and thoroughly chilling voice. "We are the League of Villains. It may be presumptuous of us, but we have invited ourselves into the home of the heroes, U.A. High School, in order to have All Might, the Symbol of Peace, draw his final breath."
Izuku froze. To kill All Might? That's impossible. No one can kill All Might.
"My role is to scatter you," Kurogiri, the mist villain, declared.
The purple fog expanded violently, rushing forward like a tidal wave. Thirteen tried to activate Black Hole, but the mist bypassed the suction, enveloping the students.
Izuku felt a sudden, disorienting sensation of weightlessness. The world spun in a blur of violet and black.
When gravity reasserted itself, Izuku was falling.
He didn't hit concrete. He hit water.
SPLASH.
Izuku plunged deep into the artificial lake of the Shipwreck Zone. The water was cold, but his dense muscle mass and thick skin barely registered the temperature. He opened his eyes, the salt stinging slightly.
Above him, he saw the silhouettes of several villains diving into the water, armed with harpoons and rusted blades.
They're waiting in the water to ambush whoever falls in, Izuku analyzed rapidly. They don't know my Quirk.
A villain with shark-like teeth and gills shot through the water, thrusting a steel trident directly at Izuku’s chest.
Izuku didn't swim away. He simply treaded water, letting his massive weight sink him slightly to stabilize his center of gravity. He raised his right hand.
The trident struck Izuku’s palm.
Clang.
The steel prongs bent and buckled against Izuku’s bare skin. The villain’s eyes widened in sheer disbelief underwater. Izuku reached forward, grabbing the villain by the collar of his shirt, and casually tossed him up toward the surface with enough force to launch the man thirty feet into the air.
Izuku looked around. Above the surface, he could hear a terrified scream.
He kicked his heavy legs. Given his density, swimming was difficult, but the sheer, monstrous power of his leg muscles propelled him upward like a torpedo.
He breached the surface, gasping for air.
"Midoriya!"
Izuku looked over. Tsuyu was clinging to the side of a rusted yacht floating in the center of the lake. She had Mineta tucked under one arm, the small boy crying hysterically.
Dozens of aquatic villains were circling the boat, laughing and taunting the students.
"Looks like we got some fresh meat!" a villain with a scaly face yelled, raising a machete. "Let's sink the boat and gut 'em!"
Izuku narrowed his eyes. The cage within his chest rattled. He didn't need the Nemean fur for these low-level thugs, but he needed to clear the water quickly before they overwhelmed Tsuyu.
"Asui-san! Hold on tight!" Izuku roared, his deep voice carrying over the sound of splashing water.
Izuku took a deep breath. He brought his massive, heavily corded arms out of the water, spreading them wide.
He clapped his hands together.
The kinetic force generated by the impact of his hyper-dense musculature was devastating. The resulting shockwave of compressed air and displaced water exploded outward from his palms like a depth charge.
A massive, concussive wave ripped across the surface of the lake. The water literally parted, pushed violently outward by the sheer pressure. The circling villains were caught in the blast, screaming as the shockwave knocked the breath from their lungs and sent them flying back in a massive, circular tsunami.
The yacht rocked violently, groaning under the strain of the artificial tidal wave.
Izuku grabbed the edge of the boat and hoisted himself up. His wet U.A. gym uniform clung to his massive frame, showcasing the absurd, herculean musculature beneath.
Mineta stared at Izuku, snot running down his nose. "M-Midoriya... what the hell are you?! You just blew up the lake by clapping!"
"Are you guys okay?" Izuku asked, ignoring Mineta’s panic and looking at Tsuyu.
"We're fine, thanks to you," Tsuyu ribbited, climbing fully onto the deck. "But the villains are recovering. They'll surround the boat again."
Izuku walked to the edge of the deck, peering over the railing. The villains were indeed swimming back, looking far more angry than before.
"We need to get to the shore," Izuku said, his analytical mind kicking into high gear. "Aizawa-sensei is fighting in the central plaza. If there are this many villains here, there must be dozens more fighting him. I need to help."
"How do we get past them?" Mineta cried, throwing his sticky purple spheres onto the deck in a panic. "We're trapped!"
Izuku looked at the sticky spheres. He looked at the villains. He looked down at his own massive legs.
"Mineta-kun. Throw your spheres into the water. As many as you can," Izuku ordered, a plan forming in his head. "Asui-san, grab Mineta and hold onto me."
Mineta didn't question it. He began frantically pulling spheres from his head, tossing them into the water in a wide arc around the boat.
Izuku stood at the stern of the yacht. Tsuyu wrapped her long tongue around Mineta’s waist and clung tightly to Izuku’s broad, muscular back.
"Hold your breath," Izuku warned.
Izuku engaged the raw, mutant power in his legs. The veins in his calves bulged like thick ropes. He didn't just kick off the boat; he stomped downward onto the deck, shattering the fiberglass hull, and launched himself horizontally.
He was a three-hundred-and-fifty-pound human cannonball. He slammed into the water, but instead of sinking, he used his sheer strength to hydroplane, kicking his legs with such apocalyptic force that he created a localized whirlpool in his wake.
The villains who had been swimming toward them were caught in the massive, swirling vortex of displaced water. The current dragged them in, smashing them against each other and directly into Mineta’s sticky spheres. Within seconds, the entire aquatic villain squad was clumped together in a massive, inescapable ball of limbs and purple adhesive.
Izuku breached the surface near the shore of the plaza, landing heavily on the concrete with a loud CRUNCH. Tsuyu hopped off his back, completely unbothered, while Mineta immediately began kissing the ground.
Izuku didn't celebrate. His enhanced hearing picked up the sound of bones breaking.
He looked toward the center of the plaza.
Aizawa was on his knees. His yellow goggles were shattered. His arm was bent at a sickening, unnatural angle.
Standing over him was the massive, brain-exposed monstrosity.
"Eraserhead," the man with the hands—Shigaraki—croaked, scratching his neck violently. "Your Quirk is cool, but it's not suited for long fights against large groups. And it's completely useless against absolute, raw power."
Shigaraki pointed at the monster. "This is the Nomu. It is the bio-engineered anti-Symbol of Peace."
The Nomu reached down, its massive, black hand wrapping around Aizawa's face. With a sickening crunch, it slammed the hero's head directly into the concrete floor. Blood pooled around Aizawa's face.
Izuku’s heart stopped. Sensei.
The cage within his chest didn't just open. It was violently ripped off its hinges.
"Tsu," Izuku growled, his voice dropping to a terrifying, baritone vibration that made the concrete beneath his feet tremble. "Take Mineta. Get out of here."
"Midoriya, wait, you can't—" Tsuyu started, but Izuku was already gone.
He didn't run. He detonated.
The kinetic launch shattered the shoreline, sending a geyser of water and concrete dust into the air. Izuku crossed the hundred-yard distance to the center of the plaza in a fraction of a second.
Shigaraki had just turned his head, sensing the sudden, massive spike in kinetic energy. "Nomu, block—"
Izuku arrived. He didn't transform yet. He relied purely on the hyper-dense mass of his baseline mutant physiology. He threw a right hook aimed squarely at the Nomu's exposed brain.
The Nomu, moving with speed that rivaled All Might, raised its left arm to block.
Izuku’s fist collided with the Nomu's forearm.
BOOOOOOM.
A shockwave of compressed air exploded outward, shattering every remaining pane of glass in the USJ. The sheer force of the collision tore the concrete beneath them to shreds, creating a crater twenty feet wide. Shigaraki was blown backward by the wind pressure, his feet skidding across the ground.
Izuku gritted his teeth, his muscles bulging to their absolute limit.
The Nomu didn't move. It hadn't been pushed back an inch.
Izuku’s eyes widened. I hit him with enough force to derail a train. Why didn't he move?!
"Shock Absorption," Shigaraki laughed, recovering his balance. He stared at Izuku, a sick smile spreading beneath the hand on his face. "Nomu is engineered to take All Might's punches at 100%. Your raw strength is impressive, kid, but blunt force means nothing to him."
The Nomu let out a horrific, high-pitched screech. It pulled its right fist back and threw a devastating punch aimed directly at Izuku's ribs.
Izuku crossed his arms to block.
The impact was astronomical. The Nomu possessed the physical strength of the Symbol of Peace. Izuku was launched backward, his heavy boots carving deep, smoking trenches into the concrete as he skidded for thirty feet before finally grinding to a halt.
Izuku lowered his arms. His gym uniform was torn, but his skin was unbruised. His dense bones had absorbed the kinetic transfer without fracturing.
"Oh?" Shigaraki tilted his head, scratching his neck furiously. "He tanked it? The kid has high defense. A tank class. Nomu, crush him."
The Nomu shrieked again and charged.
Izuku watched the black behemoth rapidly close the distance. His analytical mind, running at a thousand miles an hour, broke down the situation.
Blunt force won't work. It just absorbs the kinetic energy. My baseline density allows me to survive its hits, but I can't damage it with punches. Aizawa-sensei is bleeding out. Thirteen is unaccounted for. All Might isn't here.
Izuku looked down at his heavy hands.
I promised All Might I would control the beast. I promised I would be the shield. But a shield can't kill a monster. To defeat this thing... I can't hold back. I have to become the predator.
Izuku took a deep breath.
The Nomu leaped into the air, bringing both of its massive, black fists down for a skull-crushing blow.
Izuku closed his eyes.
Let it out.
A sound unlike anything the villains had ever heard erupted from Izuku Midoriya. It was a roar—a primal, deafening, earth-shattering roar that vibrated in the marrow of everyone present. It was the sound of an apex predator claiming its absolute dominion.
A blinding, supernova flash of golden light erupted from Izuku's chest, instantly incinerating his remaining U.A. shirt.
The Nomu’s fists crashed down upon Izuku.
The impact was like a meteor strike. The ground completely gave way, a massive cloud of dust and debris rising fifty feet into the air.
Shigaraki laughed softly. "Game over. No one can survive a direct hit from—"
The dust cleared.
Shigaraki’s laughter died in his throat. His red eye widened in absolute, paralyzing terror.
The Nomu was suspended in mid-air. Its twin fists were caught, held firmly in the grip of two massive, golden paws.
Izuku Midoriya was gone. In his place stood the Nemean Lion.
He towered at a monstrous nine feet tall, his hyper-dense musculature expanding to god-like proportions. He was covered entirely in shimmering, indestructible golden fur that seemed to radiate physical heat. A majestic, thick mane of gold shielded his neck and shoulders. His face had elongated slightly, his jaw heavy and powerful, and his emerald eyes now burned with a blinding, luminescent, vertical-slit glare.
Three-inch, pitch-black claws, sharper than surgical steel, protruded from his massive knuckles, currently digging slightly into the Nomu's black flesh.
The Nomu struggled, its bird-like eyes widening as it realized it could not overpower the golden giant beneath it.
"What... what is that?!" Shigaraki whispered, stepping backward. "A second phase?! He's... he's a boss character!"
Izuku looked up at the Nomu. He didn't speak. He didn't mutter. The time for words was over.
With a terrifying, guttural growl, Izuku flexed his massive arms and tore the Nomu's fists apart, breaking its guard.
Izuku didn't throw a punch. He swung his right claw in a devastating, horizontal arc.
SWISH.
The sound was like a guillotine dropping.
The Nomu’s Shock Absorption was designed to nullify kinetic impact. It was designed to take blunt force trauma. But Izuku’s claws were not blunt force. They were infinite, unbreakable edges driven by the strength of a titan.
Izuku’s claws sheared cleanly through the Nomu's left bicep. The black arm detached completely, spinning through the air in a shower of dark blood before hitting the concrete with a wet thud.
The Nomu shrieked in agony, staggering backward.
"He cut it?!" Shigaraki screamed, scratching his neck so hard he drew blood. "That's cheating! Nomu, regenerate and kill him!"
Before Izuku’s eyes, the stump of the Nomu's arm bubbled and writhed. Muscles, tendons, and black skin shot outward, instantly weaving together to form a brand new arm.
Izuku’s golden eyes narrowed. Hyper-regeneration. A second Quirk. I have to destroy it faster than it can heal.
Izuku lunged.
The speed of the Nemean Lion was terrifying. It wasn't the graceful, gliding speed of a speedster. It was the explosive, violent momentum of a hunting cat.
He collided with the Nomu, his golden mass completely overwhelming the black monster. Izuku tackled the Nomu through a concrete wall, the two titans tumbling into the ruins of the Fire Zone.
The Nomu retaliated fiercely. It swung its newly regenerated fist, catching Izuku squarely in the jaw with the force of a cruise missile.
The blow snapped Izuku’s head to the side. The shockwave leveled a burning building next to them.
Izuku slowly turned his head back. His golden fur hadn't even been ruffled. The kinetic force simply dispersed across the absolute barrier of his Quirk.
Izuku let out a low, rumbling laugh—a terrifying, predatory sound.
He raised both paws.
What followed was a butchery.
The Nomu threw a flurry of punches, a hundred blows a second, each one capable of turning a Pro Hero to paste. Izuku simply waded through the storm, his golden armor tanking every single strike with absolute impunity.
Izuku swung his claws. He severed the Nomu's right leg at the knee. As the creature fell, Izuku spun, his backhand claws slicing across the Nomu's chest, laying its ribs bare. The Nomu shrieked, its hyper-regeneration desperately trying to stitch the gaping wounds closed, but Izuku was relentless.
He was a hurricane of indestructible gold and black steel. He severed arms, he severed legs, moving with a savage, brutal efficiency that completely overwhelmed the mindless bio-weapon.
Shigaraki ran to the edge of the crater, looking down at the fight. His mind was breaking. The weapon designed to kill All Might was being systematically dismantled by a teenager.
"This is wrong!" Shigaraki screamed, stamping his foot. "The stats are unbalanced! His defense is maxed out! It's a bug! Kurogiri! Get the Nomu out of there!"
The purple mist materialized behind Izuku, attempting to open a warp gate to sever Izuku's head.
Izuku didn't even look back. He relied purely on his beastly instincts. He slammed his heavy, golden foot into the concrete, generating a shockwave that disrupted the air pressure, forcibly destabilizing Kurogiri's mist form before the portal could fully open.
"He's too heavy!" Kurogiri panicked, reforming a few yards away. "His kinetic output disrupts my warp coordinates!"
Down in the crater, the Nomu, having just regenerated its legs, lunged forward with a desperate, mindless tackle, wrapping its arms around Izuku's waist, trying to crush his spine.
Izuku didn't budge. He looked down at the exposed, pulsating brain of the monster.
I am the shield, Izuku thought, his golden eyes burning with absolute conviction. And right now, I am the sword.
Izuku raised his massive golden paws, interlacing his fingers, locking his claws together to form a devastating, unified bludgeon.
He brought both fists down directly onto the Nomu's exposed brain.
The impact did not rely on slashing. The sheer, overwhelming concussive force, backed by his unbreakable golden density, overpowered the upper limits of the Nomu's Shock Absorption.
CRACK.
The sound of the Nomu's skull fracturing echoed across the entire USJ. The monster's knees buckled. Its eyes rolled back into its head.
Izuku grabbed the Nomu by the throat with one massive paw. He lifted the seven-foot monster effortlessly into the air. He slammed it down onto the concrete with such force that a crater forty feet deep opened up beneath them.
Izuku pinned the monster to the ground with his knee.
He threw his golden, majestic head back, and roared.
It was the roar of the Nemean Lion. It was a sound so powerful, so ancient and dominant, that it commanded absolute obedience from the world around it. The localized fires in the zone were extinguished by the sheer air pressure of the sound. The remaining low-level villains, who had just recovered from the water zone, instantly dropped their weapons and fell to their knees, paralyzed by pure, biological terror.
Up by the entrance, Shigaraki stumbled backward, falling onto his rear end. He was shaking.
"Game over," Shigaraki whispered, staring at the glowing, golden god standing over his ultimate weapon. "We need to leave. Kurogiri, get us out of here."
"But Tomura Shigaraki, the Nomu—"
"LEAVE IT!" Shigaraki shrieked, scrambling into the purple mist. "That thing is a glitch! We can't fight it!"
Kurogiri enveloped Shigaraki, and in a flash of purple mist, the leaders of the League of Villains vanished, leaving their shattered army behind.
Silence descended upon the USJ.
Izuku stood in the center of the crater. The Nomu lay beneath him, its brain heavily traumatized, its hyper-regeneration failing as its central nervous system shut down. It was unconscious, utterly defeated.
Izuku’s breathing was heavy. The adrenaline began to fade. The primal fury that had fueled the Nemean transformation slowly ebbed, replaced by the exhausting, agonizing weight of reality.
He had let the beast out. He had butchered a creature.
The golden light flickered. The thick, indestructible fur began to recede, pulling back into his pores. His skeleton cracked and shifted, shrinking back to his (still massive) six-foot-four human form.
Izuku collapsed onto his hands and knees, gasping for air. His bare chest heaved. He stared at the blood on his claws before they retracted back into his knuckles.
"Midoriya!"
Izuku looked up. Kirishima and Todoroki, who had fought their way out of the other zones, were standing at the edge of the crater, staring down at him in absolute awe.
"Did you... did you take that thing down by yourself?" Todoroki asked, his usually stoic voice laced with genuine shock.
Before Izuku could answer, the massive steel doors at the entrance of the USJ were blown off their hinges.
A towering, muscular figure stood in the doorway, completely unsmiling.
"IT IS FINE NOW," All Might boomed, though he lacked his signature grin. He tore off his suit tie, his blue eyes scanning the devastation. "I AM HERE."
All Might leaped down the stairs, preparing for the fight of his life. He had heard the alarms at U.A. He had pushed his failing body to the absolute limit to get here.
He landed in the central plaza. He saw Aizawa, heavily injured but alive, being tended to by Tsuyu and Mineta.
And then, he looked at the massive crater.
He saw the Nomu, the bio-weapon designed to kill him, lying in pieces, unconscious and broken.
And standing over it, completely shirtless, covered in dust but entirely unharmed, was his student.
Izuku looked up at All Might. His emerald eyes were tired, filled with a deep, tragic sadness.
"All Might," Izuku rumbled softly, his baritone voice echoing in the quiet dome. "I... I couldn't hold back. I had to let it out."
All Might’s breath hitched. He walked forward, stepping into the crater. He ignored the defeated monster. He walked right up to the giant teenager and pulled him into a massive, crushing hug.
"You did exactly what you had to do, young Midoriya," All Might whispered quietly, so only Izuku could hear. "You protected your teacher. You defeated a monster. You were the shield they needed."
Izuku slowly wrapped his heavy arms around his mentor, burying his face in All Might's shoulder, and finally let out a long, shaky sigh.
He had faced the nightmare, and the unbreakable cage had held. The golden lion had roared, and for the first time, Izuku wasn't afraid of the echo.
