What If Naruto Had a Rival Stronger Than Sasuke

The morning sun had barely begun to paint the Hidden Leaf Village in hues of gold and amber when Naruto Uzumaki threw his window open, breathing in the crisp air. For the first time in his twelve years of life, the heavy, suffocating blanket of failure didn't cling to his shoulders. He lifted his hand, his calloused fingers brushing against the cold metal of the leaf insignia strapped proudly to his forehead.

He was a ninja. A real, certified shinobi of Konohagakure.

"Watch out, world!" Naruto shouted into the empty streets, his voice echoing off the surrounding buildings, startling a flock of pigeons into the sky. "The future Hokage is on his way!"

He scrambled around his messy apartment, throwing on his signature orange jumpsuit, chugging a carton of expired milk out of sheer habit, and rushing out the door. Today was the day they would be assigned their Genin squads. Today was the day his legend truly began.

However, as Naruto sprinted through the bustling streets, dodging market stalls and groggy villagers, a small, persistent voice in the back of his mind reminded him of the harsh reality of the Academy hierarchy. He wasn't at the top. He wasn't even second.

When Naruto slammed the sliding door of the Academy classroom open, the chaotic chatter of the graduating class immediately washed over him. He stood in the doorway, hands on his hips, wearing a grin so wide it threatened to split his face. A few classmates glanced his way, but most ignored him.

His blue eyes scanned the tiered desks. Sakura Haruno, the girl of his dreams, was already there, her pink hair catching the morning light. Naruto’s heart did a familiar leap, and he took a step toward her. But Sakura wasn't looking at him. Her emerald eyes, along with the eyes of nearly every other girl in the room, were fixed on the middle row.

There sat Sasuke Uchiha.

Brooding, silent, with his hands steepled in front of his face, Sasuke was the picture of tragic, untouchable cool. He was the last loyal Uchiha in the village, a prodigy in his own right, boasting top scores in ninjutsu and shuriken jutsu. Naruto felt his lip curl into a familiar sneer. Sasuke. The guy who always looked down on him, who always acted like everyone else was just dust beneath his sandals.

But as Naruto’s gaze shifted just one seat over, his sneer faded, replaced by a complex knot of awe, frustration, and undeniable respect.

Sitting next to the window, bathed in a square of soft morning light, was Kenjiro Kazama.

If Sasuke was the loud, flashy kind of genius that drew all the attention, Kenjiro was the quiet, terrifying kind that demanded absolute silence. He didn't have the Uchiha name, nor did he have flocks of fan-girls squealing over his every move. What he had was a reputation that made even the Academy instructors speak his name with a hushed reverence.

Kenjiro wore a fitted, pragmatic tactical outfit—a dark grey, high-collared short-sleeve shirt, black ANBU-style trousers taped at the ankles, and arm guards threaded with fine wire. A small, unadorned tantō—a short sword—was strapped horizontally across his lower back. His hair was a stark, messy charcoal, framing piercing, slate-grey eyes that seemed to constantly calculate the distance, weight, and threat level of everything in the room. He wasn't brooding like Sasuke; he was simply meditating, his breathing so perfectly controlled that his chest barely seemed to rise and fall.

The Kazama clan was a fallen one, wiped out not by betrayal, but by the brutal attrition of the Third Shinobi World War. They were known for one thing: terrifying, superhuman speed and absolute, flawless weapon mastery. Kenjiro was the last of them, and he wore that legacy like a suit of iron armor.

Naruto remembered the final sparring exam vividly. Sasuke had defeated his opponent with a flashy, impressive display of the Uchiha interceptor fist. The crowd had cheered. Then, it was Kenjiro's turn against an older, held-back student. Iruka had barely shouted "Begin!" before a gust of wind swept the courtyard. Kenjiro was already standing behind his opponent, the dull edge of a wooden kunai resting gently against the older boy’s jugular. The match had lasted less than a second.

Naruto swallowed hard. He walked up the steps and slid into the seat next to Sakura, intentionally bumping Sasuke’s desk as he passed. Sasuke glared at him, a flicker of annoyance in his dark eyes.

"Watch it, loser," Sasuke muttered.

"Make me, jerk," Naruto shot back, leaning in close, their foreheads nearly touching in a spark of instant rivalry.

"Both of you, quiet," a calm, even voice cut through the air. It wasn't loud, but it carried a weight that made both boys snap their heads toward the window.

Kenjiro didn't even open his eyes. "You're disrupting my focus. Save your energy for the field. You're going to need it."

Sasuke’s jaw clenched. The Uchiha’s superiority complex flared wildly whenever Kenjiro spoke. Sasuke knew, though he would never admit it aloud, that Kenjiro was the only person in the room he couldn't beat. It ate at him like a physical disease. He pulled away from Naruto and crossed his arms, staring out the window, his Sharingan-less eyes burning with a silent, desperate vow to surpass the Kazama.

Suddenly, the classroom door slid open, and Iruka Umino stepped in, carrying a large clipboard. The room fell dead silent.

"Congratulations to all of you," Iruka began, a proud, nostalgic smile on his scarred face. "As of today, you are all full-fledged ninjas. But this is only the beginning. From here on out, you will be performing missions for the village in squads of three. These squads have been carefully balanced based on your scores, abilities, and psychological profiles to ensure maximum success."

Naruto crossed his fingers, muttering under his breath. "Please be with Sakura, please be with Sakura, please be with Sakura..."

Iruka went through the list. Team 8, Team 10...

"Team 7," Iruka called out, his eyes scanning the paper, pausing for a fraction of a second, his brow furrowing slightly. He cleared his throat. "Naruto Uzumaki."

Naruto pumped his fist. "Yes!"

"Sakura Haruno."

Naruto jumped out of his seat. "WOOOHOOO!" he cheered, while Sakura’s head slumped onto her desk in absolute despair. Inner Sakura was screaming, tearing her hair out in a dark void.

"Sasuke Uchiha," Iruka continued.

Now it was Sakura’s turn to bolt upright, cheering victoriously, while Naruto groaned, his head hitting the desk with a heavy thud.

"And..." Iruka paused again, looking up at the class. The room shifted in its collective seat. And? Squads were only ever three people. What did he mean, and?

"Due to a special mandate directly from the Third Hokage," Iruka read, his voice betraying a hint of his own surprise, "Team 7 will operate as a highly irregular four-man Genin cell. Your fourth member is Kenjiro Kazama."

The silence in the classroom was absolute. You could hear a pin drop on the wooden floorboards.

Naruto blinked, turning his head slowly toward the window. Sasuke stiffened, his fingers digging into his forearms so hard his knuckles turned white. Sakura gasped, looking between the brooding Uchiha and the silent Kazama.

A four-man squad? With the dead-last idiot, the top kunoichi, the Uchiha prodigy... and the undisputed monster of the Academy?

Kenjiro finally opened his eyes. Slate-grey met Iruka’s gaze. He didn't nod, he didn't complain, he didn't show a single ounce of emotion. He simply accepted the tactical reality of the situation.

"Iruka-sensei!" Sakura blurted out, unable to help herself. "Why does Team 7 get four people? And why Kenjiro?"

Iruka sighed, scratching the scar across his nose. "The Hokage determines the squads, Sakura. But... if I had to guess, it's about balance. Team 7 possesses the highest concentration of volatile potential, raw talent, and sheer unpredictability this Academy has seen in decades. You require a different dynamic. Your Jonin instructor will explain the rest."

Iruka finished the assignments, gave them one last heartfelt smile, and dismissed them to wait for their new masters.

Hours passed. The classroom emptied as Jonin after Jonin arrived to collect their respective teams. Kurenai took Team 8. Asuma took Team 10. Soon, only the four members of Team 7 remained in the hollow silence of the afternoon.

The sun was beginning to dip, casting long, dramatic shadows across the chalkboards.

Naruto paced at the front of the room, his patience entirely evaporated. "He's late! He's so late! How can our sensei be the only one who's late on the first day?!"

Sakura sighed from her desk, leaning her chin on her hand. "Naruto, just sit down. Complaining isn't going to make him get here any faster."

Sasuke sat in his usual pose, eyes closed, radiating irritation.

Kenjiro remained by the window. In the three hours they had been waiting, he had disassembled his tantō, cleaned the blade with a specialized cloth, oiled it, reassembled it, and had been sitting in a state of deep meditation for the last ninety minutes. His chakra felt like a still, unbothered pond.

Naruto, fueled by a mixture of boredom and spite, dragged a chair over to the classroom door. He grabbed a chalk-filled chalkboard eraser and carefully balanced it on the top edge of the slightly open sliding door.

"Naruto, what are you doing?" Sakura asked, though she didn't sound entirely opposed to the idea.

"This is what he gets for keeping the future Hokage waiting!" Naruto snickered, hopping down from the chair. "A little surprise for our lazy sensei."

"Our sensei is an elite Jonin," Sasuke spoke up, his voice dripping with condescension. "Do you really think a Jonin is going to fall for a booby trap meant for a toddler? You're an idiot, Naruto."

"We'll see who the idiot is when it hits him right on his dumb head!" Naruto retorted.

Sakura nodded in agreement with Sasuke. "Yeah, Naruto. Sasuke-kun is right. A Jonin would see that from a mile away."

From the corner of the room, Kenjiro’s voice drifted over, soft but crystal clear. "The trap is childish. But it will work."

Sasuke snapped his head toward Kenjiro. "What makes you say that?"

Kenjiro opened one grey eye. "Because a shinobi who arrives three hours late to meet a newly formed squad isn't operating on a standard tactical mindset. He is either entirely apathetic, intentionally testing our patience, or completely disorganized. In any of those three scenarios, his guard against mundane, non-lethal threats inside a secure village building will be virtually non-existent. He won't dodge it because he won't care to look for it."

Sasuke frowned, hating the flawless logic. Naruto just grinned wider. "See?! Kenjiro gets it!"

A hand suddenly gripped the edge of the sliding door. The room collectively held its breath.

The door slid open. A tall man with gravity-defying silver hair stepped into the room. He wore the standard Jonin flak jacket, a dark blue mask covering the lower half of his face, and his forehead protector was pulled down over his left eye. He looked like he had just rolled out of bed, holding a small orange book in his hand.

Plop.

The chalky eraser fell perfectly, bouncing off the man's silver hair and leaving a puff of white dust on his head. It hit the floor with a pathetic thud.

Naruto burst into raucous laughter, pointing a finger at the Jonin. "Ahahaha! I got him! I got him!"

Sakura immediately backpedaled, waving her hands defensively. "I'm so sorry, sensei! I tried to stop him, but Naruto wouldn't listen!"

Sasuke just stared in disbelief. This is an elite Jonin? He really fell for that?

Kenjiro didn't move a muscle, but his eyes tracked the Jonin intensely. He analyzed the man's posture. Slouched. Relaxed. But his center of gravity is perfectly balanced. He let the eraser hit him. Why? To gauge our reactions.

Kakashi Hatake picked up the eraser, brushing the chalk from his hair. His single visible, lazy dark eye swept over the four genin. He looked at the hyperactive blonde, the panicking pink-haired girl, the brooding Uchiha, and finally, his gaze locked onto the stoic, grey-eyed boy in the corner. For a fraction of a second, Kakashi’s lazy demeanor slipped, his eye sharpening as he registered the sheer density of Kenjiro’s coiled chakra. Minato's son. The last Uchiha. A civilian-born smart-girl. And the prodigy of the Kazama. The Old Man really didn't hold back on giving me a headache.

Kakashi sighed, placing the eraser on a desk. "How can I put this... my first impression of this group... is that you're a bunch of idiots."

Naruto and Sakura deflated, comically depressed auras hanging over their heads.

"Meet me on the roof in five minutes," Kakashi said, before vanishing in a swirl of leaves and a puff of smoke.

The roof of the Academy offered a sprawling view of the village, the Hokage monument looming in the distance. The afternoon wind was picking up, rustling the leaves of the surrounding trees. Kakashi leaned against the railing, his arms crossed, observing his new four-man squad sitting on the steps before him.

"Alright," Kakashi began, his voice muffled slightly by his mask. "Let's start with some introductions. Tell me a little about yourselves."

"Introductions?" Sakura asked, tilting her head. "What are we supposed to say?"

"Your likes, your dislikes, your dreams for the future, hobbies. Things like that," Kakashi replied nonchalantly.

Naruto crossed his arms. "Hey, before we tell you about us, why don't you tell us about you? You're the one who was three hours late!"

Kakashi pointed to himself. "Me? My name is Kakashi Hatake. Things I like and things I hate... I don't feel like telling you that. My dreams for the future... never really thought about it. As for my hobbies, I have lots of hobbies."

Sakura sweatdropped, leaning over to Naruto. "That was totally useless. All we learned was his name."

"Okay, your turn," Kakashi pointed at Naruto. "You on the right, you first."

Naruto adjusted his forehead protector, a massive grin on his face. "I'm Naruto Uzumaki! I like instant ramen in a cup, and I really like the ramen Iruka-sensei treats me to at Ichiraku! I hate the three minutes you have to wait after you pour the water in the ramen cup. My hobbies are eating different kinds of ramen and comparing them! And my future dream... is to be the greatest Hokage! Then the whole village will stop disrespecting me and start treating me like I'm somebody, somebody important!"

Kakashi nodded slowly. He's grown up. But he's just as loud as Kushina. And carrying all that pain. "Alright. Next, the pink-haired girl."

Sakura blushed, her hands clasping together. "I'm Sakura Haruno! What I like... I mean, the person I like is..." She stole a not-so-subtle glance at Sasuke, giggling softly. "My hobby is..." Another glance at Sasuke, followed by a squeal. "My dream for the future is..." She buried her face in her hands, letting out a high-pitched squeak of pure infatuation.

Kakashi sighed internally. Girls her age are more interested in boys than in ninja training. Wonderful. "And what do you hate?"

"NARUTO!" Sakura yelled, her demeanor snapping into sheer aggression for a split second before returning to blushing innocence. Naruto whimpered.

"Okay... next. The brooding one."

Sasuke rested his elbows on his knees, his hands interlocked in front of his face. His dark eyes were cold, devoid of the warmth that a boy his age should have. "My name is Sasuke Uchiha. I hate a lot of things, and I don't particularly like anything. What I have is not a dream, because I will make it a reality. I'm going to restore my clan, and destroy a certain someone."

The temperature on the roof seemed to drop a few degrees. Naruto gulped, thinking Sasuke meant him. Sakura looked at Sasuke with tragic, worried eyes.

Kakashi’s visible eye didn't change, but his mind raced. Just as the Hokage warned. He's consumed by the trauma of the massacre. If he isn't guided properly, that hatred will consume him.

Kakashi finally shifted his gaze to the far left. "And finally. The fourth."

Kenjiro sat differently than the others. He wasn't slouching, nor was he tense. He was perfectly aligned, sitting in a loose lotus position, his hands resting lightly on his knees. When he spoke, his voice was smooth, carrying none of Naruto's bluster, Sakura's infatuation, or Sasuke's venom. It was the voice of a soldier.

"My name is Kenjiro Kazama," he began. "I like the quiet of the morning just before dawn, and the meticulous maintenance of my tools. I dislike arrogance, wasted movement, and those who rely on inherited gifts rather than forged skill."

Sasuke’s eyes snapped toward Kenjiro, taking the 'inherited gifts' comment as a direct, personal attack. Kenjiro didn't even look at him.

"My hobbies," Kenjiro continued calmly, "are chakra control exercises, studying tactical history, and kenjutsu katas. As for my dream for the future..."

Kenjiro finally looked up, his slate-grey eyes locking directly onto Kakashi’s singular dark eye. The sheer intensity, the unyielding absolute certainty in the boy's gaze sent a microscopic chill down Kakashi’s spine. It wasn't killing intent. It was raw, unadulterated willpower.

"...is to prove that hard work, perfect fundamentals, and an unbreakable mind can slay gods. I will stand at the absolute peak of the shinobi world, so that no one I fight alongside will ever have to die."

Silence fell over the roof once more.

Naruto stared at Kenjiro, his mouth slightly open. He wanted to be Hokage for acknowledgement, but Kenjiro’s dream felt so much heavier, so much more profound. It felt real.

Sasuke’s teeth ground together. Slay gods? Stand at the absolute peak? The sheer audacity of the Kazama made Sasuke's blood boil. Kenjiro wasn't just aiming to be a great ninja; he was aiming to transcend them all.

Kakashi held Kenjiro’s gaze for a long moment before finally closing his eye in a faux-cheerful smile. Fascinating. A genin with the mindset of a veteran ANBU commander. The Kazama discipline is terrifying. The Third was right—putting him with Sasuke and Naruto is like throwing a lit match into a room full of explosive tags.

"Well, you're a very unique bunch," Kakashi said, clapping his hands together. "We have a knucklehead, a fan-girl, an avenger, and a philosopher-swordsman. Excellent. Tomorrow, we will have our first real duty as Team 7."

"What kind of duty?! A mission?!" Naruto asked, vibrating with excitement.

"No. We're going to do something that only the five of us can do," Kakashi replied. "A survival exercise."

"Survival exercise?" Sakura echoed, confused. "I thought we were going on a mission. We did survival exercises at the Academy all the time. Why are we doing it again?"

Kakashi let out a low, dark chuckle. The sound was so out of place with his lazy demeanor that it made the genin tense.

"What's so funny?" Naruto demanded.

"Oh, it's just that... if I tell you, you're not going to like it," Kakashi said, his eye curving into a sinister crescent. "Out of the twenty-seven graduates, only nine or ten will actually be accepted as Genin. The other eighteen will be weeded out and sent back to the Academy. In other words, this survival exercise is a highly difficult, pass-or-fail test. And the failure rate is over sixty-six percent."

Naruto’s jaw dropped. Sakura went pale. Sasuke’s eyes narrowed into slits.

Kenjiro simply nodded once, absorbing the information. A secondary vetting process. Logical. The Academy produces graduates, but the field requires survivors. The exams are too easy.

"See? I told you you wouldn't like it," Kakashi said cheerfully. "Anyway, meet me at Training Ground 3 tomorrow at 5:00 AM sharp. Bring your ninja gear." Kakashi turned to leave, but paused, looking back over his shoulder.

"Oh, and one more thing. I highly recommend you skip breakfast tomorrow. Unless you feel like throwing it up."

With that, Kakashi vanished.

Naruto gripped his hair, panicking. "No way! After all that work, I could be sent back?! I can't fail now! I have to pass!"

Sasuke stood up, shoving his hands into his pockets. "Don't get in my way tomorrow, Naruto. Or I'll drop you myself." He turned and walked away, his mind already running through tactical scenarios.

Kenjiro stood gracefully, stretching his shoulders. He looked at Naruto, who was hyperventilating, and Sakura, who was staring after Sasuke.

"Panic is a waste of oxygen," Kenjiro said quietly, walking past Naruto. "Go home. Hydrate. Sharpen your kunai. Sleep. Tomorrow, we find out what the real world looks like."

Training Ground 3 was shrouded in a thick, pre-dawn mist when the four genin arrived. The air was biting cold, and the grass was wet with dew. Naruto, Sakura, and Sasuke stood shivering, their stomachs growling loudly in the quiet clearing. They had all taken Kakashi’s warning to heart and skipped breakfast.

Kenjiro arrived a few minutes later, stepping silently out of the tree line. He didn't look tired. He didn't look hungry. He looked exactly as he had the day before: composed and lethal. He sat cross-legged on top of one of the three wooden posts in the center of the field, closing his eyes to meditate while they waited.

And they waited.

5:00 AM turned into 6:00 AM.

6:00 AM turned into 8:00 AM.

By 10:00 AM, the sun was high in the sky, burning away the mist and replacing the cold with a stifling, uncomfortable heat. Naruto was lying on his back, groaning in agony holding his stomach. Sakura was pacing furiously. Sasuke was seething, leaning against a tree.

"HE'S LATE!" Naruto and Sakura screamed simultaneously when Kakashi finally strolled out from behind a large oak tree, waving lazily.

"Morning, everyone," Kakashi smiled eye-smiled. "Sorry I'm late. A black cat crossed my path, so I had to take the long way around."

"LIAR!"

Kakashi ignored their shouting and walked over to the wooden stumps. He reached into his pouch and pulled out an alarm clock, setting it on the center stump. He set the timer for noon. Then, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, metallic object that jingled.

He held up his hand. Dangling from his fingers were three small silver bells.

"Your assignment is very simple," Kakashi explained, his tone shifting slightly toward seriousness. "You have until noon to take these bells from me. That's it. If you can't get a bell by noon, you go without lunch. You'll be tied to these posts, and you'll watch me eat my lunch right in front of you."

Naruto’s stomach let out a monstrous growl. So that was why he told them not to eat.

"Wait a minute, sensei," Sakura pointed out, her brow furrowed. "There are four of us, but you only have three bells."

Kakashi’s eye crinkled in amusement. "Very observant, Sakura. Yes. There are only three bells. Which means that at least one of you will definitely fail. That person will be sent back to the Academy in disgrace. It might be one of you, or it might be all four of you. You can use any weapons, including shuriken. If you don't come at me with the intent to kill, you won't get a bell."

"But sensei, that's too dangerous!" Sakura protested.

"Yeah, you couldn't even dodge a chalkboard eraser!" Naruto laughed, pulling out a kunai. "I'm gonna take a bell right now!"

Before anyone could blink, Naruto lunged forward, thrusting the kunai toward Kakashi.

Whoosh.

Kakashi moved so fast he seemed to blur. In a fraction of a second, he was standing behind Naruto, his hand gripping the back of Naruto’s head, pushing him forward, while Kakashi’s other hand held Naruto’s own kunai pointed directly at the back of the boy’s neck.

The clearing froze. Sasuke gasped, his eyes wide. He hadn't even seen Kakashi move. Sakura covered her mouth in shock.

Kenjiro, sitting on the post just a few feet away, didn't flinch. His grey eyes simply tracked the microscopic shift in Kakashi's footing. He shifted his weight to his back foot, used a Shunshin (Body Flicker) technique, and capitalized on Naruto's overextended center of gravity. Fast. But not untrackable.

"Don't be in such a hurry," Kakashi said softly, his voice devoid of humor. "I didn't say 'start' yet."

He released Naruto, who stumbled forward, panting heavily, a drop of cold sweat rolling down his cheek. He had just felt the very real proximity of death.

"But, you came at me with the intent to kill. So... I'm starting to like you guys," Kakashi said, stepping back into the center of the field. "Get ready... and... START!"

Instantly, the clearing emptied. Sakura dove into the bushes to the left. Sasuke bounded up into the high branches of an oak tree to conceal his presence. Kenjiro simply melted backwards into the shadows of the forest, his chakra signature vanishing entirely.

Only Naruto remained standing in the open, crossing his arms and pointing at Kakashi.

"You and me, right now! Fair and square!" Naruto shouted.

From the canopy, Sasuke slapped his forehead. Idiot.

Kakashi sighed, reaching into his pouch. "You know, compared to the others, you're a little bit... weird."

Naruto charged. Kakashi pulled out his orange book—Make-Out Tactics—and began to read, completely ignoring the screaming blonde. Enraged by the disrespect, Naruto threw a wild punch, then a kick, then a sweeping leg strike. Kakashi dodged them all effortlessly, not even looking up from his book, shifting his body by mere inches to avoid the blows.

Naruto gritted his teeth, slipping behind Kakashi to put him in a chokehold. "Gotcha!"

Kakashi crouched, his hands forming a familiar hand sign. "Shinobi Secret Taijutsu Technique: One Thousand Years of Death!"

With a brutal, upward thrust of his index and middle fingers, Kakashi launched Naruto into the stratosphere. Naruto screamed as he flew over the trees, plunging directly into the nearby river with a massive splash.

A few moments later, water exploded as a dozen Naruto Shadow Clones erupted from the river, swarming Kakashi. It was an impressive jutsu for a genin, but Kakashi simply replaced himself with one of the clones, causing Naruto to beat up his own copies before dispelling them in confusion. While distracted, Naruto spotted a bell on the ground under a tree. He lunged for it, only to be hoisted into the air by his ankle, caught in a snare trap.

Kakashi picked up the dropped bell, shaking his head. "Think before you use jutsu, Naruto. And don't fall for obvious traps."

Suddenly, the air whistled.

Several shuriken and kunai flew from the tree line, striking Kakashi perfectly in the chest and head. He fell backward, hitting the ground dead.

Naruto screamed in panic. But Sasuke, watching from the trees, clicked his tongue as Kakashi's 'corpse' poofed into a log. Substitution Jutsu.

Sasuke knew his position was compromised. He dropped from the tree, landing gracefully in the clearing. Kakashi emerged from the brush, closing his book.

"Ah, the Uchiha," Kakashi said. "Let's see what the genius can do."

Sasuke didn't waste time shouting. He launched a barrage of shuriken, attaching razor-thin ninja wire to them. Kakashi deflected the weapons, but Sasuke pulled the wires, trapping Kakashi against a tree trunk. Sasuke rapidly cycled through hand signs. Snake, Ram, Monkey, Boar, Horse, Tiger!

"Fire Style: Fireball Jutsu!"

A massive sphere of roaring orange flame erupted from Sasuke’s mouth, hurtling toward the trapped Jonin. The heat scorched the grass and illuminated the clearing. Sasuke smirked, breathing heavily. He had him.

But as the flames cleared, the tree was scorched black, but Kakashi was gone.

"Where...?" Sasuke frantically looked around.

"Underneath you," a voice echoed from the earth.

Two hands burst from the soil, grabbing Sasuke’s ankles. "Earth Style: Headhunter Jutsu!" With a violent yank, Sasuke was pulled underground, buried up to his neck in the dirt, completely immobilized.

Kakashi crouched over Sasuke's head, resting his chin on his hand. "Ninjutsu and tactics are good, Sasuke. But you're too predictable. You rely too much on your family's signature moves. And you completely lost track of your surroundings in your eagerness to land a hit."

Kakashi stood up, dusting off his hands. He had dealt with the knucklehead, traumatized the fan-girl with a genjutsu (he had caught Sakura earlier), and buried the brooding prodigy. He looked at the alarm clock. 11:45 AM. Fifteen minutes left.

"Well, that was disappointing," Kakashi muttered aloud, reaching into his pouch to pull his book back out. "I suppose the fourth one ran away."

"I never run."

Kakashi froze. The voice didn't come from the trees. It didn't come from behind him. It came from directly above him.

Kakashi snapped his head up just as a shadow blotted out the sun. Kenjiro was dropping from the sky, perfectly inverted, his tantō drawn and gleaming with a terrifying, unnatural sharpness. It wasn't just falling; he had used a wind-natured burst of chakra from the soles of his feet to accelerate his descent to terminal velocity.

Kakashi’s eye widened. He couldn't dodge; the acceleration was too fast. He crossed his kunai over his head to block.

CLANG!

The impact was immense. The shockwave cracked the earth beneath Kakashi’s feet, sending spiderwebs of fissures through the dirt just inches from Sasuke’s buried face. Sasuke watched in utter, paralyzing shock. The physical strength behind the blow was monstrous for a kid.

Kakashi buckled slightly under the pressure, but shoved upward, forcing Kenjiro back. Kenjiro didn't fight the push; he used the momentum to backflip, landing soundlessly on his feet ten yards away.

Kakashi didn't put his book away, but he lowered it. The lazy demeanor was gone. "Impressive entry. You masked your chakra perfectly among the leaves. But brute force won't get you a bell."

"I am aware," Kenjiro said softly. He sheathed his tantō. He didn't take a standard fighting stance. He just stood there, his arms hanging loose at his sides, his center of gravity flawlessly balanced.

"Oh? Giving up the sword?" Kakashi taunted mildly.

"You're a Jonin. If I rely on my blade, you will exploit my reach," Kenjiro analyzed, his voice cold, devoid of the panic or adrenaline that possessed the other genin. "To get the bell, I need to breach your guard. Hand-to-hand is the only mathematical probability."

Mathematical probability? Kakashi thought, amused but wary. Let's see.

Kenjiro moved.

It wasn't a charge. It was a snap. One second he was ten yards away, the next, the distance was erased.

Swift Release: First Step.

Kakashi barely brought his forearm up in time to block a devastating roundhouse kick aimed at his ribs. The bone-jarring impact echoed through the clearing. Before Kakashi could retaliate, Kenjiro pivoted on his planted foot, sweeping Kakashi’s legs. Kakashi jumped over the sweep, aiming a downward punch at Kenjiro's face.

Kenjiro deflected the Jonin's wrist with the back of his hand, using circular momentum to throw Kakashi slightly off balance, and drove his palm directly toward Kakashi's chest.

Kakashi vanished in a blur of speed, appearing behind Kenjiro. "Too slow."

Kakashi reached for the back of Kenjiro's neck, just as he had with Naruto. But his fingers closed around empty air.

Kenjiro wasn't there. He had anticipated the maneuver.

"Behind you," Kenjiro whispered.

Kakashi spun, forced to bring both arms up in an X-block as Kenjiro unleashed a blinding flurry of strikes. Left hook, right straight, spinning back-kick, knee strike. The sheer velocity of the Kazama Taijutsu style was suffocating. Every strike was aimed at a vital point. Every movement chained perfectly into the next with zero wasted energy.

Sasuke, still buried up to his neck, watched with wide, trembling eyes. The Sharingan had not yet awakened in him, but his Uchiha eyes could process motion better than a normal person. Yet, even he was struggling to track Kenjiro’s movements. The boy was fighting a Jonin. A legendary ANBU captain. And he was actually forcing the Jonin to defend.

What... what is he? Sasuke thought, a bitter, acidic taste of utter inadequacy flooding his mouth. He's my age. He's exactly my age. How can the gap between us be this massive?!

Kakashi was genuinely surprised. He wasn't using his full speed, not by a long shot, but he was using enough speed to comfortably handle an average Chunin. Kenjiro was keeping up. Not just keeping up—he was predicting Kakashi's blocks.

He's reading my muscle tension, Kakashi realized as he dodged a palm strike that shaved a few strands of silver hair from his head. He's looking at my shoulders, my hips. This kid is a monster of pure fundamentals.

Kakashi decided to end it. As Kenjiro threw a high kick, Kakashi grabbed the boy's ankle. "Gotcha. It's over."

Kakashi swung Kenjiro aiming to slam him into the ground. But mid-swing, Kenjiro’s body twisted with feline grace. Using the momentum of Kakashi's throw, Kenjiro swung his free leg in a brutal arc, his heel slamming directly into Kakashi’s wrist.

The nerve strike forced Kakashi’s grip to loosen for a fraction of a second. Kenjiro broke free, twisting in mid-air. As he fell past Kakashi, Kenjiro reached out.

His fingers brushed the metallic loops on Kakashi’s belt.

Jingle.

Kenjiro landed on one knee, sliding backward through the dirt to dissipate his momentum. He stood up, breathing heavily for the first time. Sweat beaded on his forehead, and his chakra was noticeably depleted. He had just burned through almost all his stamina in a sixty-second exchange of ultra-high-speed combat.

Kakashi stood still, his eye wide in genuine shock. He looked down at his hip.

There were only two bells left.

Kakashi looked up. Kenjiro stood twenty feet away, his chest heaving slightly. He raised his right hand, opening his fist. Resting in his palm was a small, silver bell.

The clearing was deathly silent.

Naruto, still hanging upside down from his snare trap in the distance, stared with his mouth hanging open. "He... he got one..."

Sasuke felt like he had been struck by lightning. His pride, the core of his identity as the elite Uchiha avenger, shattered into a million irreparable pieces. He touched a Jonin. He outmaneuvered him. I didn't even scratch him... and Kenjiro won.

Kakashi stared at the bell in the boy's hand. He let out a long, slow breath, running a hand through his gravity-defying hair. He hadn't expected this. No Genin in history had ever taken a bell from him by sheer force and skill alone. Usually, it required deception or a profound team effort. Kenjiro had just bulldozed the test through sheer, terrifying individual excellence.

RRRRIIINNNNGGGG!

The alarm clock on the stump blared, signaling noon. The test was over.

"Well," Kakashi said, his voice quiet, devoid of his usual mocking tone. "Time's up."

Ten minutes later, the dynamic of Team 7 had fundamentally shifted.

Naruto was tied tightly to the center wooden post, his stomach growling with the fury of a dying star. Sasuke sat on the ground to the right, his knees pulled to his chest, staring blankly at the dirt. He looked broken. Sakura sat to the left, depressed and hungry, glancing nervously at Sasuke.

Kenjiro sat on a rock a few feet away. He wasn't tied up. He didn't look defeated. He casually tossed the silver bell in the air and caught it, the jingling sound serving as a cruel, repeating metronome to Sasuke's humiliation.

Kakashi stood before them, holding two bento boxes.

"You guys look pathetic," Kakashi said bluntly. "None of you understand the true meaning of this test. Except, maybe, Kenjiro. But even he failed the core concept."

"What do you mean, failed?!" Naruto yelled, struggling against the ropes. "Kenjiro got a bell! He kicked your butt!"

"He caught me off guard, yes," Kakashi corrected, looking at Kenjiro. "Kenjiro, you have the combat ability of a Chunin, maybe higher. Your speed and precision are exceptional. But... why didn't you help the others?"

Kenjiro stopped tossing the bell. He looked at Kakashi. "Because they are liabilities in their current state. Naruto attacks without thinking. Sakura lacks combat initiative. Sasuke is blinded by his own ego. If I attempted to coordinate a tactical strike with them, their predictability would have compromised my opening. Mathematically, my best chance of securing the objective was a solo infiltration."

Sasuke flinched at the words. Blinded by his own ego. Coming from Kenjiro, it felt like a death sentence.

"Mathematically, you're right," Kakashi said coldly. "But shinobi are not math equations. This test wasn't about whether you could fight me. It was about teamwork. It was designed so that you couldn't succeed unless you worked together. The fact that Kenjiro managed to break the test through sheer individual power is an anomaly. But it doesn't change the fact that as a team, you are a complete failure."

Kakashi walked over to a stone memorial nearby, running his fingers over the engraved names. He spoke to them about the reality of being a ninja. About how those who break the rules are scum, but those who abandon their comrades are worse than scum. He painted a grim picture of missions gone wrong, of friends dying because someone wanted to play the hero alone.

He walked back, his eye hard. "I'm giving you one more chance. After lunch, we will try again. But..."

Kakashi placed the two bento boxes on the ground in front of Sasuke, Sakura, and Kenjiro.

"Naruto gets nothing. He tried to eat early, and he fell for every trap. If anyone gives Naruto a single bite of food, that person will immediately fail and be permanently expelled from the ninja program. Understand?"

Kakashi glared at them, his killing intent flaring just enough to make them freeze in terror. "I make the rules. You follow them. I'll be back in ten minutes."

With a swirl of leaves, Kakashi vanished.

A heavy, oppressive silence fell over the team. Naruto’s stomach let out a pathetic squeal. He forced a smile, looking away.

"I-I'm fine, guys! I don't need any food! I can go for days without eating! I'm gonna be Hokage, this is nothing!"

Sasuke opened his bento box. The smell of rice and grilled fish filled the air. Sakura opened hers, looking at Naruto with pity.

Sasuke picked up his chopsticks. He looked at the food, then at Naruto, then at the spot where Kakashi had vanished. He thought about Kakashi's speech. Those who abandon their comrades are worse than scum. But if he fed Naruto, he would fail. He would lose his chance to get stronger. He would never catch up to Kenjiro. He would never kill Itachi.

Sasuke hesitated, his chopsticks trembling over the rice.

Before Sasuke could make a decision, a hand suddenly thrust a pair of chopsticks holding a large piece of grilled fish directly in front of Naruto's face.

Naruto blinked in shock, crossing his eyes to look at the food. He looked past the chopsticks to see Kenjiro standing beside the post, holding his own open bento box.

"Eat," Kenjiro ordered, his voice flat.

"B-But Kenjiro!" Sakura shrieked, looking around frantically. "Sensei said you'll fail! You'll get expelled! You got a bell, you don't have to risk it!"

"Sakura is right!" Naruto protested, tears welling up in his eyes. "Don't do it, man! I'm fine!"

"A starving shinobi is a dead shinobi," Kenjiro said, his slate-grey eyes locking onto Naruto’s. "If you are dead, you cannot watch my back in the field. If you are weak, you become a liability. Kakashi is not here. Therefore, tactical logistics dictate we distribute rations to maintain maximum combat effectiveness for the squad."

Kenjiro pressed the chopsticks against Naruto's lips. "Open your mouth, Uzumaki. That is an order."

Naruto sniffled, a massive tear rolling down his cheek. He opened his mouth and ate the fish, chewing loudly. "Th-Thank you, Kenjiro..."

Sasuke watched the exchange. A strange, bitter feeling washed over him. Kenjiro was right. He hated the Kazama prodigy, he hated how strong he was, but he couldn't deny the logic. And more than that, he couldn't stand the idea of Kenjiro showing more resolve than an Uchiha.

Sasuke aggressively scooped up some rice and shoved it toward Naruto. "Here. Eat this too, loser. We need you at full strength if we're going to get those bells."

Sakura smiled, her heart swelling. She held up her box too. "Me too, Naruto! You can have some of mine!"

Suddenly, the sky darkened. The wind howled furiously, whipping dirt and leaves into a violent vortex in the center of the clearing. Thunder cracked in the cloudless sky.

Kakashi erupted from the storm, his face twisted in demonic fury, his hands weaving signs. "YOU FOOLS! YOU BROKE THE RULES! ARE YOU PREPARED FOR THE PUNISHMENT?!"

Naruto screamed in terror. Sakura shrieked, shielding her face. Sasuke gritted his teeth, grabbing his kunai.

Kenjiro didn't step back. He dropped the bento box, shifting instantly into a low, defensive stance, his hand resting on the hilt of his tantō, placing his body squarely between Kakashi's wrath and the tied-up Naruto.

Kakashi paused. The storm died down instantly. The demonic aura vanished, replaced by a warm, eye-crinkling smile.

"You pass."

The four genin froze.

"Huh?" Naruto squeaked.

"You pass," Kakashi repeated, standing up straight. "You're the first squad I've ever passed. The others just did exactly what I told them. They were mindless tools. A ninja must see underneath the underneath. In the ninja world, those who break the rules are scum. But those who abandon their friends... are worse than scum."

Kakashi walked over and sliced the ropes binding Naruto with a kunai. Naruto fell forward, landing on his face in the dirt, before shooting up and cheering at the top of his lungs. Sakura joined in, jumping up and down. Sasuke let out a long, quiet breath he didn't realize he had been holding, a small smirk crossing his face.

Kenjiro slowly released the hilt of his sword, his muscles relaxing. He looked at the bell still hanging from Kakashi's waist.

"The exercise is over," Kakashi announced, giving them a thumbs-up. "Team 7 starts its first real mission tomorrow! Dismissed!"

As Naruto and Sakura celebrated, and Kakashi walked away to read his book, Sasuke stood up. He didn't feel victorious. He looked over at Kenjiro. The grey-eyed boy was packing up his gear, his face impassive, completely unaffected by the emotional rollercoaster they had just experienced.

Sasuke walked over to him, his fists clenched tightly at his sides.

"Kenjiro," Sasuke said, his voice low, vibrating with suppressed anger.

Kenjiro paused, looking at him over his shoulder.

"You got a bell today," Sasuke stated, his Sharingan-less eyes burning with a dark, intense fire. "You made a Jonin bleed. You think you're untouchable. You think you're the absolute peak."

Kenjiro said nothing. He just listened.

"Enjoy it while it lasts," Sasuke vowed, the hatred and ambition swirling together in his chest, forming a toxic, driving force that would define his entire existence from this day forward. "Because I swear on the name of the Uchiha... I will surpass you. I will break you. I am going to be the one standing at the top."

Kenjiro turned fully to face Sasuke. He didn't sneer. He didn't laugh. He simply looked at Sasuke with absolute, chilling indifference.

"Emotions make your attacks predictable, Uchiha," Kenjiro said quietly. "If you want to surpass me, stop talking about it, and train until your bones break. Until then, you are just a shadow fighting for second place."

Kenjiro turned and walked away into the forest, leaving Sasuke standing alone in the clearing, trembling with a rage so profound it threatened to tear his heart in two.

Naruto, who had watched the exchange from a distance, stopped cheering. He looked at Sasuke's back, sensing the overwhelming darkness radiating from his long-time rival. Then, Naruto looked toward the forest where Kenjiro had disappeared.

The dynamic was set. The hierarchy was established.

Naruto realized in that moment that becoming Hokage wasn't just about getting strong enough to beat Sasuke. It was about climbing a mountain that seemed infinitely high. Sasuke was a genius, yes. But Kenjiro... Kenjiro was a monster.

Naruto grinned, wiping his nose with his thumb, a fire igniting in his own soul.

Just you wait, Kenjiro. I'll catch up to both of you. Believe it.

The midday sun beat down on the Hidden Leaf Village, casting harsh, unforgiving shadows over Team 7 as they stood knee-deep in a muddy riverbank.

"Target spotted," Sasuke Uchiha whispered into his radio, his dark eyes narrowed at the brush across the water.

"Target in my sights," Sakura Haruno chimed in, crouching behind a boulder.

"I've got eyes on the target, too!" Naruto Uzumaki yelled, nearly dropping his radio in the water.

A heavy sigh crackled through the earpieces. "Naruto, you're too loud. Kenjiro, what's your status?" Kakashi Hatake’s lazy voice inquired.

There was a pause, followed by a calm, even voice. "Target secured. Awaiting extraction."

Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura all snapped their heads toward the dense foliage to their left. From the shadows, Kenjiro Kazama emerged. He walked with a silent, measured gait, completely ignoring the mud squelching beneath his sandals. In his left hand, gripped firmly by the scruff of the neck, was a fat, brown feline wearing a pink ribbon on its right ear. Tora the cat.

The cat hissed and slashed wildly at the air, but Kenjiro held it at the exact angle where its claws were mathematically incapable of reaching him.

"He... he got it before we even moved," Naruto muttered, his shoulders slumping.

Sasuke glared at the mud on his own boots, then at Kenjiro's perfectly clean uniform. It had been three weeks since the Bell Test, and this had become the suffocating, inescapable pattern of Team 7. Whether they were pulling weeds, painting fences, or catching runaway pets, Kenjiro executed the tasks with a terrifying, surgical efficiency. He never bragged. He never rubbed it in their faces. He just did it perfectly, making the rest of them feel utterly redundant.

"Mission accomplished," Kakashi’s voice crackled. "Let's report back."

The Hokage’s office was thick with the scent of pipe tobacco. Hiruzen Sarutobi, the Third Hokage, sat behind his massive desk, puffing thoughtfully as he looked over the mission scroll Iruka Umino handed him.

Standing before the desk, the dynamic of Team 7 was clear. Naruto was vibrating with restless energy, Sasuke was radiating sullen frustration, Sakura looked exhausted, and Kenjiro stood in a perfect position of parade rest, his face a mask of placid indifference.

"Excellent work on retrieving Tora, Team 7," the Hokage said, his aged eyes crinkling. "Now, for your next assignments. We have babysitting the chief counselor's three-year-old, helping with the potato harvest in the neighboring sector, or..."

"NO!"

Naruto crossed his arms in a giant 'X'. "No way, Old Man! I want a real mission! I'm not a little kid anymore, and I'm definitely not a farmer! Give us something where we can actually use our training!"

"Naruto, show some respect!" Iruka scolded, standing up from his desk. "You're a brand new Genin! Everyone starts with D-rank missions to build experience!"

"Experience doing what?! Pulling weeds?!" Naruto shouted back. "I'm gonna be Hokage! How is finding a stupid cat going to prepare me for that?!"

Kakashi sighed, placing a hand on Naruto's head and pushing him down into a bow. "I apologize for the idiot, Lord Hokage."

Sasuke didn't say anything, but internally, he agreed with every word the knucklehead said. He couldn't awaken his Sharingan pulling weeds. He couldn't catch up to the monster standing next to him by babysitting toddlers.

The Hokage looked at the four Genin. He saw Naruto's fire, Sasuke's dark ambition, Sakura's wavering confidence, and then, his eyes settled on Kenjiro. The boy hadn't reacted to Naruto's outburst. He merely observed, analyzing the political exchange.

"Kakashi," the Hokage said softly, lowering his pipe. "How do you evaluate their readiness?"

Kakashi looked at his team. "Naruto has stamina but lacks discipline. Sasuke has skill but lacks patience. Sakura has intelligence but lacks combat drive. Kenjiro..." Kakashi paused, his visible eye narrowing slightly. "Kenjiro is overqualified for D-ranks."

Kenjiro didn't blink. The Hokage let out a long puff of smoke.

"Very well," the Third Hokage said. "If you are so determined, Naruto, I will assign you a C-rank mission. You will be acting as bodyguards for a traveler."

"Really?!" Naruto’s face lit up like a lantern. "Who?! A princess? A feudal lord?"

"Bring him in," the Hokage ordered.

The door slid open, revealing an older man with a grey beard, a towel wrapped around his neck, and a large bottle of sake in his hand. He took a heavy swig, his cheeks flushed with alcohol, and sneered at the group of children before him.

"What's this? A bunch of snot-nosed brats?" The man took another gulp, leaning heavily against the doorframe. "And you, the little one with the idiot look on his face. You really expect me to believe you're a ninja?"

Naruto laughed. "Who's the little one with the idiot look on his face?"

Sasuke, Sakura, and Kenjiro all stood perfectly still. Naruto looked left, then right, before realizing he was the shortest one there.

"I'LL KILL YOU!" Naruto screamed, lunging for the man, only for Kakashi to grab him by the collar.

"We're supposed to protect the client, Naruto, not kill him," Kakashi sighed.

"I am Tazuna, a master bridge builder from the Land of Waves," the man said, wiping his mouth. "I must return to my country to finish a bridge that will change the fate of my people. I expect you to get me there in one piece, even if you are just a bunch of runts."

The journey out of the village began the next morning. The air was cool, the sun casting long morning shadows through the dense canopy of the forest path. Naruto was practically skipping, marveling at every tree and rock they passed. It was his first time outside the village walls.

Sasuke walked with purpose, his hands in his pockets, his eyes constantly scanning the trees. He was determined to prove his superiority on this mission. Sakura stayed close to Sasuke, occasionally casting worried glances at the thick forest.

Kenjiro walked at the rear. His breathing was synchronized with his footsteps, masking his presence so thoroughly that if Sakura didn't look back to check on him, she would have forgotten he was there. His slate-grey eyes catalogued everything: the wind direction, the humidity, the blind spots in the foliage, and the footprints they left behind.

It was mid-day when they passed it. A small, muddy puddle in the middle of a dry dirt road. It hadn't rained in over a week.

Naruto walked right past it. Sakura didn't notice it. Sasuke glanced at it, a flicker of confusion crossing his face, but he kept walking, rationalizing that perhaps an underground spring had leaked.

Kakashi saw it, and his posture shifted imperceptibly.

Kenjiro didn't just see it. He analyzed it. No rain. High evaporation rate. Topography dictates runoff would flow toward the river, not pool on an elevated ridge. The chakra density within the water is artificial.

He didn't draw his tantō. He didn't shout a warning. He simply shifted his weight to the balls of his feet and tightened his chakra network, preparing his nervous system for instantaneous kinetic release.

As Kakashi walked past the puddle, the water suddenly erupted.

Two large, muscular shinobi wielding massive, jagged gauntlets connected by a thick, spiked chain burst from the camouflage. Their faces were concealed by metal masks, their headbands bearing the symbol of the Hidden Mist.

Before Naruto could even scream, the two assassins wrapped the spiked chain entirely around Kakashi.

"One down," the assassin on the left rasped. With a brutal, synchronized yank, they pulled the chain taut.

Kakashi’s body was ripped to shreds, chunks of flesh and bone flying everywhere as blood sprayed the dirt path.

Sakura let out a bloodcurdling scream. Naruto froze, his eyes wide in absolute, paralyzing terror. The invincible Jonin—their sensei—was dead. Cut into pieces right in front of them.

The two Mist assassins immediately vanished from Kakashi’s remains, appearing directly behind Naruto, their spiked chains raised for the kill.

"Second one."

Naruto couldn't move. His brain screamed at his body to dodge, to weave hand signs, to run, but his legs felt like lead.

Sasuke whipped around, his heart pounding against his ribs. Move! he told himself. He reached for a kunai, preparing to throw it to intercept the chain. But as his fingers brushed the hilt, he realized a terrifying truth: he was too slow. The chain was already descending. Naruto was going to die. Sasuke froze for a fraction of a second, his mind overwhelmed by the speed of the ambush.

In that microsecond of hesitation, a gust of wind swept the path.

A sharp, metallic CLANG echoed through the forest.

Sasuke’s eyes widened.

Kenjiro was standing directly between Naruto and the assassins. He hadn't drawn his sword. Instead, he had caught the jagged, spiked chain barehanded. But his hands weren't bleeding. A concentrated, swirling layer of wind chakra coated his palms, grinding against the metal spikes with a high-pitched screech.

The two assassins gasped beneath their masks. A kid had stopped their momentum dead.

"What the—?!"

Kenjiro didn't give them time to finish the thought.

"Swift Release: Second Step."

Kenjiro released the chain and vanished. He didn't just move fast; he seemed to skip frames of reality. He appeared perfectly positioned inside the guard of the assassin on the left. With a clinical, terrifying precision, Kenjiro drove two fingers into the nerve cluster beneath the man's armpit, instantly paralyzing the arm, followed by a devastating, wind-enhanced palm strike directly to the man’s solar plexus. The assassin's eyes rolled into the back of his head, his lungs entirely devoid of air, and he crumpled to the dirt.

The second assassin panicked, swinging his gauntlet wildly. Kenjiro ducked under the clumsy strike, pivoted on his heel, and delivered a sweeping roundhouse kick to the back of the man's knee, shattering the joint with a sickening crack. As the man fell forward, Kenjiro brought his elbow down precisely on the base of the man’s neck.

The second assassin hit the ground, unconscious.

Silence fell over the road, broken only by the rustling of leaves and Tazuna's terrified hyperventilating.

The entire engagement, from the moment Kakashi was shredded to the moment the assassins hit the ground, had taken less than three seconds.

Naruto stood there, his knees shaking, staring at Kenjiro's back. Sasuke’s kunai was still only halfway drawn from its pouch. His breath hitched in his throat, a cold sweat breaking out over his skin. I froze. I couldn't do anything. He... he dismantled two Chunin-level assassins before I could even draw my weapon.

The chunks of Kakashi’s 'flesh' on the ground suddenly puffed into smoke, revealing sliced logs. Kakashi dropped from a nearby tree, landing next to the unconscious assassins.

"Excellent work, Kenjiro," Kakashi said, his voice entirely calm. "Your threat assessment and execution were flawless."

Kakashi looked at the rest of them. "Naruto, sorry I didn't step in right away, but I didn't think you'd freeze up like that. Sasuke, you hesitated. Sakura, you didn't even attempt to protect the client."

Kakashi walked over and tied the two assassins to a tree. "Kenjiro, why didn't you use your tantō?"

"Lethal force was unnecessary and tactically unsound," Kenjiro replied, dusting off his hands, his breathing completely even. "We require intelligence. Dead men cannot be interrogated. Furthermore, blood draws predators and rival tracker-nin. Blunt force trauma and nerve strikes were the optimal solution."

Kakashi smiled beneath his mask. Incredible. He didn't just react; he mapped out the geopolitical consequences of a kill in a split second.

Naruto fell to his knees, staring at his hands. He was trembling. He had boasted about being Hokage, about wanting a real mission, but the moment real danger appeared, he became a statue. He looked up at Kenjiro. The grey-eyed boy wasn't gloating. He wasn't even looking at them; he was scanning the perimeter for secondary threats.

Sasuke gritted his teeth so hard he tasted blood. He slammed his kunai back into its pouch, his knuckles white. The gap between them wasn't closing. It was a canyon. And Sasuke was standing at the bottom, looking up at a peak he couldn't comprehend.

"Mr. Tazuna," Kakashi said, his tone shifting to something cold and dangerous. "These are Chunin from the Village Hidden in the Mist. They are known for fighting relentlessly, no matter what the cost. This means this is no longer a C-rank mission protecting you from bandits. This is a B-rank, possibly A-rank mission involving ninja combat. You lied on your request."

Tazuna swallowed hard, looking away.

After a tense interrogation, Tazuna revealed the truth about Gato, the ruthless shipping magnate who was strangling the Land of Waves, and his hiring of rogue ninja to stop the bridge's construction.

Kakashi looked at his Genin. "This is beyond your pay grade. We should abandon the mission and return to the Leaf."

"No!" Naruto suddenly stood up, wiping his eyes fiercely. He pulled a kunai and, to everyone's shock, stabbed it directly into the back of his own hand, letting the blood flow to purge the imaginary poison of his fear. "I am a shinobi of the Leaf! I swore I wouldn't run away, and I won't lose to Sasuke... or Kenjiro! We're finishing this mission!"

Kakashi sighed. "Naruto, that was a cool speech, but if you lose any more blood, you're going to die."

As Naruto panicked, Sakura scolded him, and Kakashi bandaged his hand, Sasuke approached Kenjiro.

"How did you know?" Sasuke demanded quietly.

"The puddle," Kenjiro answered without looking at him. "It hasn't rained. If you observe the environment rather than your own internal monologue, the world will tell you when it intends to kill you."

Sasuke glared at him, internalizing the advice even as he hated the source. Observe the environment. He swore to himself that he would not freeze again.

The boat ride through the fog-shrouded waters to the Land of Waves was tense and silent. The sheer scale of the half-finished bridge loomed over them like a leviathan in the mist.

Once they made landfall, they escorted Tazuna through a dense, swampy forest. The tension was palpable. Kakashi walked at the front, his eye peeled. Sasuke was practically vibrating with hyper-vigilance, analyzing every shadow, every snapping twig. Naruto was throwing kunai at random rustling bushes, desperate to prove he wouldn't freeze again.

"Naruto, stop wasting kunai," Kakashi scolded. "You're going to hit a squirrel."

"I sense a bloodthirsty presence over there!" Naruto pointed wildly.

Kenjiro walked in his usual position at the rear. He stopped. His slate-grey eyes drifted upward, staring into the thick canopy of leaves overhead. The ambient noise of the forest—the birds, the insects—had suddenly gone dead silent.

"Incoming," Kenjiro stated flatly. "Above."

Kakashi yelled, "GET DOWN!"

A massive, whistling sound tore through the air. A gigantic sword, as tall as a man and twice as wide, spun like a helicopter blade, scything through the trees. Team 7 hit the dirt. The blade sheared through a thick oak tree trunk before embedding itself halfway into the trunk of a massive pine.

Standing sideways on the hilt of the embedded sword was a man wrapped in bandages, wearing cow-print pants, his bare chest rippling with muscle. His eyes, devoid of mercy, locked onto them.

Kakashi stood up, pushing his forehead protector up to reveal a scarred eye holding a blood-red pupil with three spinning tomoe.

"Zabuza Momochi," Kakashi said grimly. "The Demon of the Hidden Mist. An A-rank rogue ninja."

"Kakashi of the Sharingan," Zabuza sneered, his voice like grinding gravel. "Sorry, but the old man is mine."

Sasuke felt his breath hitch again. Sharingan? Kakashi has the Sharingan?

"Get in Manji formation. Protect the bridge builder," Kakashi ordered, stepping forward. "Don't interfere in this fight. That's the teamwork here."

Zabuza laughed. "Teamwork? Children playing at war." He formed a single hand sign. Hidden Mist Jutsu.

Instantly, a thick, unnatural fog rolled in, swallowing the forest whole. Visibility dropped to less than five feet. The temperature plummeted.

"Eight points," Zabuza's voice echoed from everywhere and nowhere at once. "Larynx, spine, lungs, liver, jugular, subclavian artery, kidneys, heart. Which will be my kill point?"

The sheer, oppressive killing intent radiated through the mist. It was so thick it felt like physical pressure crushing their lungs. Sasuke grabbed a kunai, his hand shaking so violently he could barely hold it. His mind raced. I have to kill myself. If I don't, he'll do it. It's too much. The pressure is too much!

"Sasuke."

Kakashi’s voice broke through the panic. "Calm down. I'll protect you with my life. I don't allow my comrades to die."

Before Kakashi could finish, Zabuza materialized directly inside the Manji formation, his massive sword swinging down toward Tazuna. Kakashi intercepted, plunging his kunai into Zabuza’s gut. But water spilled out instead of blood. A Water Clone.

The real Zabuza appeared behind Kakashi, slicing him in half. But Kakashi dissolved into water as well.

The clash between the Jonin escalated at a terrifying pace. Water dragons roared, massive waves crashed through the trees, and the sound of clashing steel echoed like thunder. Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura were completely outmatched, forced to huddle around Tazuna just to survive the collateral damage.

Then, disaster struck.

Kakashi, miscalculating Zabuza's speed in the water, was kicked backward into the river. As he tried to stand, Zabuza stood over him, performing a rapid string of hand signs.

"Water Prison Jutsu!"

A dense, inescapable sphere of water formed around Kakashi, trapping him instantly. Zabuza kept his right arm buried inside the sphere to maintain the jutsu, a sadistic smile on his bandaged face.

"Fools," Zabuza laughed. "Now your sensei is mine. Water Clone Jutsu!"

A second Zabuza rose from the river, stepping onto the muddy bank, dragging his massive sword behind him. He looked at the three Genin and the terrified bridge builder.

"Now... let's have some fun."

Kakashi pounded desperately on the inside of the water sphere. "Run! Take the bridge builder and run! You can't beat him! His clone can't go far from his real body! Run away!"

Sakura grabbed Tazuna's arm. "Let's go! We have to run!"

Naruto stepped back, his legs trembling. The urge to flee was overwhelming. He remembered the pain in his hand, his vow not to run, but this was a monster. This was death.

Sasuke grit his teeth. He calculated the odds. They were zero. If they ran, the clone would catch them. If they fought, they would die. The Sharingan was Kakashi's, and even that had failed. Absolute despair threatened to consume Sasuke.

"Formation change."

The voice cut through the chaos like a blade of ice.

Kenjiro stepped forward, breaking the Manji formation. He drew his tantō, the metal singing softly as it slid from its scabbard. His face was entirely devoid of fear. It was a mask of cold, calculating fury.

"Kenjiro! What are you doing?!" Kakashi yelled from the prison. "Run!"

"Negative," Kenjiro replied smoothly, his eyes locked on the Water Clone. "If we flee, he kills you, then hunts us down. Our survival rate drops to zero. Tactical imperative dictates we break the Water Prison."

"You arrogant brat," Zabuza's clone chuckled, hefting his massive blade. "You think you can break my jutsu?"

"Uzumaki. Uchiha," Kenjiro commanded, his tone brokering no argument. "The clone possesses one-tenth the physical strength of the original, but retains his skill. If we engage in standard Taijutsu, we will be bisected. We require a multi-vector distraction."

Naruto blinked, snapping out of his terror. "Wh-What do you mean?!"

"Use your Shadow Clones," Kenjiro ordered. "Swarm him. Uchiha, you have a Fuma Shuriken in your pack. Prepare it."

Sasuke felt a surge of indignation. He's giving me orders? But the logic was flawless, and the authority in Kenjiro's voice gave Sasuke an anchor in the storm of his panic. Sasuke nodded, reaching for his backpack.

Naruto slammed his fingers together. "Multi-Shadow Clone Jutsu!"

Two dozen Narutos erupted into existence, charging the Zabuza clone with reckless abandon. Zabuza laughed, swinging his massive sword in wide arcs, popping clones like balloons. But the sheer number obscured his vision.

"Sasuke! Now!" Naruto yelled, throwing a massive folded shuriken to the Uchiha.

Sasuke caught it, unfolding the blades of the Demon Wind Shuriken. "Demon Wind Shuriken: Windmill of Shadows!" He leaped into the air, throwing the massive blade with all his might, curving it around the mob of clones directly toward the real Zabuza, who was still holding Kakashi in the prison.

Zabuza scoffed. "A shuriken won't break my hold." He simply caught the shuriken with his free hand.

But suddenly, the shuriken poofed into smoke.

It wasn't a shuriken. It was Naruto.

"Take this!" Naruto screamed, drawing a kunai and thrusting it directly toward Zabuza’s face.

It was a brilliant maneuver. The canon maneuver. Zabuza would be forced to pull his arm out of the water prison to dodge, freeing Kakashi.

But Zabuza was an A-rank veteran. His reflexes were monstrous. Instead of letting go of the prison, Zabuza simply ducked his head, dodging the kunai by a millimeter, and brought his knee up, aiming to crush Naruto’s ribs and throw him into the river.

"Fools!" Zabuza roared. "Did you really think a cheap trick—"

He didn't finish the sentence.

Kenjiro was not watching from the shore. While Naruto and Sasuke executed the distraction, Kenjiro had moved.

Swift Release: Third Step - Phantom.

Zabuza didn't see him move. The boy didn't displace the water; he skimmed across the surface tension of the river like a skipped stone, moving so fast the mist simply parted around him.

As Zabuza brought his knee up to crush Naruto, Kenjiro materialized perfectly in Zabuza’s blind spot on his right side—the arm maintaining the Water Prison.

Zabuza's eyes widened in sheer shock. When did he—?!

Kenjiro didn't aim for a kill. A kill strike to the neck or heart would be blocked by Zabuza’s monstrous reflexes or require too much force, potentially risking Kakashi. Instead, Kenjiro aimed for the mechanics of the jutsu itself.

With blinding speed, Kenjiro swung his tantō, aiming precisely at the median nerve cluster just below Zabuza’s bicep. At the same time, Kenjiro channeled raw, cutting Wind chakra into his free hand, driving an open-palm strike directly into the tenketsu (chakra point) on Zabuza’s shoulder.

Slash. THUD.

The tantō carved a deep, bloody trench through Zabuza’s arm, while the wind-strike completely severed the chakra flow to the limb.

Zabuza screamed in agony, his right arm going completely dead, dropping limply to his side. The Water Prison instantly destabilized, bursting into a cascade of harmless river water.

Kakashi exploded from the remnants of the sphere, gasping for air. His Sharingan spun wildly, instantly assessing the situation. Kenjiro was already mid-air, having kicked off Zabuza’s chest to put distance between them, catching the falling Naruto by the collar and dragging him safely to the riverbank.

Zabuza stumbled back, clutching his bleeding, useless arm, absolute fury distorting his features. "You... you little rat!"

"Kakashi," Kenjiro said, landing perfectly on the mud, completely unfazed. "The target is immobilized. Finish it."

Kakashi didn't waste a second. He surged forward, intercepting Zabuza before he could recover. The ensuing clash was brutal and decisive. With one arm completely paralyzed, Zabuza could not wield the Kubikiribōchō (Executioner's Blade) effectively. Kakashi drove Zabuza back, unleashing a massive Water Dragon jutsu that smashed the mercenary into a tree, breaking his bones and leaving him defenseless.

Kakashi stood over the defeated Demon of the Mist, raising a kunai for the kill.

Thwip. Thwip.

Two senbon needles flew from the trees, embedding themselves deeply into Zabuza’s neck. Zabuza’s eyes rolled back, and he collapsed, dead.

From a high branch, a figure wearing a porcelain mask denoting a Hidden Mist Hunter-Nin appeared.

"Thank you," a soft, androgynous voice called down. "I have been tracking Zabuza for a long time. Waiting for an opening to strike."

Kakashi checked Zabuza's pulse. None. He let out a long breath. "You're a tracker-nin from the Mist. You killed him."

"Yes," the masked boy nodded. He leaped down, hoisted Zabuza’s massive body onto his shoulder with surprising ease, and prepared to leave. "His body holds many secrets. I must dispose of it properly."

"Hold."

The word was spoken softly, but it carried the weight of absolute authority.

Kenjiro stepped forward, his tantō still drawn, pointing the tip directly at the masked boy.

"Kenjiro, stand down," Kakashi ordered, exhausted. "He's an ally."

"He is an anomaly," Kenjiro corrected, his slate-grey eyes locking onto the masked tracker. "Three tactical inconsistencies. First: Senbon needles are tools for acupuncture and paralysis, rarely used for instant kills unless laced with fast-acting toxins, which causes immediate tissue necrosis. Zabuza shows no signs of necrosis. Second: Tracker ninja dispose of bodies on-site by severing the head and burning the corpse to prevent the secrets from being intercepted during transport. You are attempting to carry a three-hundred-pound man intact. Third: You stood by while an A-rank rogue fought a Leaf Jonin, risking the loss of your target. Conclusion: You are not a Hunter-Nin. You are Zabuza's accomplice. The needles induced a temporary death state."

The clearing fell dead silent.

Kakashi’s eye widened. He looked at Zabuza's neck, then at the masked boy. He's right. I was so exhausted I missed the standard protocol.

The masked boy—Haku—stood perfectly still under the weight of the massive corpse. Beneath the porcelain mask, his eyes narrowed in alarm. This grey-eyed boy was a monster of logic. The charade was broken.

"Fascinating," Haku whispered softly.

Suddenly, a massive swirl of mist enveloped Haku and Zabuza. Kakashi lunged forward, but he was too late. The mist cleared, and they were gone.

Kakashi cursed, pulling his forehead protector over his Sharingan. The adrenaline drained from his body, and the sheer exhaustion of chakra depletion caught up to him. He swayed on his feet, his vision blurring, and collapsed face-first into the mud.

"Sensei!" Sakura screamed, running toward him.

Naruto stood on the riverbank, breathing heavily, looking at his hands. He hadn't frozen. He had attacked. But it was Kenjiro's plan. It was Kenjiro's strike that saved Kakashi.

Sasuke stared at Kenjiro. The Kazama prodigy was calmly cleaning the blood off his tantō with a cloth, completely unbothered by the fact that he had just mathematically deduced a high-level deception and paralyzed one of the most feared swordsmen in the world.

Sasuke felt a physical ache in his chest. His Sharingan hadn't awakened. He had thrown a shuriken. That was his contribution. He was supposed to be the elite Uchiha, the avenger of his clan, but he was just a pawn on a chessboard controlled by Kenjiro Kazama.

"Uchiha. Uzumaki," Kenjiro said, sheathing his sword. "Carry Kakashi. We must reach the client's home before secondary forces arrive."

Sasuke didn't argue. He just gritted his teeth and grabbed Kakashi's arm, the vow to surpass Kenjiro burning hotter and darker in his soul than ever before.

Tazuna's home was a modest wooden structure near the edge of the water. Tsunami, Tazuna's daughter, tended to Kakashi while the Genin rested.

When Kakashi finally woke up two days later, he confirmed Kenjiro’s hypothesis. Zabuza was alive. The paralysis would wear off in approximately one week. They had seven days to prepare for the return of the Demon of the Mist and his masked accomplice.

Kakashi led the four Genin out to a nearby forest clearing. He walked with a crutch, still recovering from chakra exhaustion.

"Right now, you are outmatched," Kakashi said bluntly. "Naruto, your chakra control is atrocious. Sasuke, you have power but you bleed energy. Sakura, you have perfect control but no reserves. Kenjiro..." Kakashi sighed. "Your control and speed are phenomenal, but your chakra pool is limited. If you had tried to fight Zabuza directly for more than three minutes, you would have collapsed from exhaustion. Your strikes require too much kinetic energy."

Kenjiro nodded. It was a factual assessment. He was an assassin, not a brawler. Prolonged engagements were his weakness.

"Therefore," Kakashi smiled beneath his mask. "We are going to do some tree climbing."

Naruto groaned. "Tree climbing?! We know how to do that!"

"Not with your hands," Kakashi corrected. "With your feet."

He demonstrated, channeling chakra to his soles and walking vertically up the trunk of a massive oak tree until he was hanging upside down from a branch. He explained the concept of focusing the exact right amount of chakra to adhere to the wood. Too much, you get blown off. Too little, you fall.

Kakashi tossed them each a kunai. "Use this to mark how high you get. Begin."

Naruto charged the tree, channeling way too much chakra. CRACK. The bark exploded, and he was blasted backward onto his head.

Sasuke closed his eyes, focusing his chakra. He walked up a few steps, but the flow faltered, and he slipped, flipping gracefully to land on his feet. He marked his spot.

Sakura smiled, focusing her energy. She walked steadily up the tree, reaching a high branch with ease. "Hey guys! I did it!"

"Excellent, Sakura," Kakashi praised. "Looks like she's the closest to being Hokage, Naruto. And maybe the Uchiha clan isn't as great as they say, eh, Sasuke?"

Naruto and Sasuke growled, glaring at Sakura with immense jealousy.

Then, they looked for Kenjiro.

He wasn't on the ground. He wasn't on the trunk.

Kakashi looked up.

Kenjiro was standing on the absolute highest branch of a neighboring tree, over a hundred feet in the air. He wasn't just standing there; he was balanced on one single finger, entirely upside down, his eyes closed in deep meditation.

Kakashi sweatdropped. He didn't just climb it. He sprinted up it and turned it into an extreme conditioning exercise.

"Kazama," Kakashi called up. "You can come down. You've mastered it."

Kenjiro flipped backward, freefalling for fifty feet before catching a branch with his feet, ricocheting off another, and landing soundlessly next to Kakashi. "Chakra adherence is a fundamental kinetic principle. I mastered it when I was eight. Permission to conduct independent elemental training, Kakashi-sensei?"

Kakashi sighed. "Granted. Don't go too far."

Kenjiro walked into the deeper woods, leaving Naruto and Sasuke staring after him.

For the next four days, a strange dynamic formed. Naruto and Sasuke trained relentlessly on the trees, pushing themselves to the brink of exhaustion. They raced each other, they argued, they mocked each other, but beneath the bickering, an unspoken bond was forming.

They weren't just training to beat Zabuza. They were training to survive the gravitational pull of Kenjiro's genius. Every time they failed a climb, they pictured Kenjiro standing upside down on one finger. It drove them mad. It pushed them past their limits.

One evening, covered in mud and gasping for air, Naruto and Sasuke lay side by side at the base of the trees.

"Hey, Sasuke," Naruto panted.

"What, loser?"

"Are we... are we ever gonna catch him?"

Sasuke stared up at the darkening sky, the stars just beginning to peek through the canopy. He thought of the Bell Test. He thought of the puddle. He thought of the Water Prison.

"I have to," Sasuke whispered, his voice laced with a desperate, terrifying conviction. "If I can't beat him, I can never kill him. I will awaken my power. And when I do... Kenjiro is going down."

Naruto grinned, raising a bruised fist to the sky. "Yeah. We'll both beat him. And then I'll beat you, and become Hokage!"

Sasuke scoffed, but a tiny, almost invisible smirk crossed his lips. For a fleeting moment, they were just two boys united against an insurmountable obstacle.

But tomorrow, the real monsters would return.

The morning fog rolled in thick and cold on the seventh day. The half-finished bridge was eerily quiet when Kakashi, Sasuke, Sakura, and Kenjiro arrived. Tazuna's workers were unconscious on the ground.

Naruto had overslept, exhausted from his training, and Kakashi had decided to let him rest, much to Sasuke's annoyance.

From the dense mist, a chilling laugh echoed.

"I see you brought the brats again, Kakashi," Zabuza stepped forward, wielding his massive sword, the masked boy Haku standing at his side. "And the little rat who cut my arm. You're going to pay for that."

Kakashi pulled up his headband, revealing his Sharingan. "Sasuke, Kenjiro. Take the masked one. I'll handle Zabuza."

"Understood," Kenjiro said, drawing his tantō.

Sasuke gripped his kunai, his heart pounding. This is it. I won't freeze. I'll prove I'm better than him.

Haku blurred into motion, throwing a volley of senbon. Sasuke deflected them with his kunai, his reflexes vastly improved from the tree climbing. He charged Haku, engaging in a rapid exchange of blows. Sasuke was fast, incredibly fast. He actually managed to land a solid kick on Haku, sending the masked boy skidding backward.

Sasuke smirked. "You're slow."

Haku stood up, his aura turning cold. "I didn't want to kill you. But you leave me no choice."

Haku formed a complex, one-handed seal. Ice Style: Crystal Ice Mirrors.

Instantly, massive mirrors made of impenetrable ice formed in a dome around Sasuke. Before Sasuke could react, Haku stepped into one of the mirrors. His reflection suddenly appeared in every single mirror surrounding the Uchiha.

"What the—?!" Sasuke panicked.

A barrage of senbon rained down from every direction. Sasuke screamed as needles pierced his arms, legs, and shoulders. He was entirely trapped in a house of mirrors, unable to track the real Haku, who was moving at light speed between the reflections.

Outside the mirrors, Kenjiro watched the jutsu form. His mind immediately went to work. Kekkei Genkai. Ice manipulation. The user travels between the reflective surfaces using a localized body-flicker technique. The speed is phenomenal, but it requires a physical medium to transition.

"Sasuke is trapped," Kakashi yelled, parrying Zabuza's massive blade. "Kenjiro, break the mirrors from the outside!"

"Negative," Kenjiro replied, analyzing the structural integrity of the ice. "The ice is infused with dense chakra. A physical strike from the outside will not shatter it without a high-level fire jutsu, which I do not possess. The structural weakness must be internal."

Without hesitation, Kenjiro stepped forward and calmly walked directly into the dome of mirrors, joining Sasuke inside the death trap.

Sasuke, bleeding from a dozen shallow wounds, glared at him. "What are you doing in here, you idiot?! You gave up your tactical advantage!"

"You are failing to process the visual data, Uchiha," Kenjiro said, ignoring the senbon sticking out of Sasuke's arm. "The enemy is fast, but he is bound by the laws of physics. Watch the water droplets on the ice. They distort slightly when he shifts his mass into the mirror. He isn't in all of them at once. He is only in one."

"Are you done analyzing?" Haku's voice echoed from every mirror.

A massive wave of needles shot toward them. Sasuke flinched, raising his arms.

Kenjiro didn't block. He moved. Swift Release: First Step. He intercepted the needles aimed at his vital spots with precise swings of his tantō, letting three non-lethal needles graze his shoulder and thigh. He used the pain to ground his focus, keeping his eyes locked on the mirrors.

Suddenly, a cloud of smoke erupted from the top of the dome.

"Uzumaki Naruto has arrived!" Naruto shouted, standing on the rim of an ice mirror, striking a dramatic pose.

"Naruto, you idiot!" Sasuke yelled. "You're supposed to attack from the outside!"

Naruto blinked, looking down at them. "Oh. Right." He lost his balance and fell directly into the dome, landing face-first at Sasuke's feet.

"Great. Now we're all trapped," Sasuke groaned.

Haku showed no mercy. The barrage intensified. Naruto created Shadow Clones, but Haku shattered them instantly, turning Naruto into a pincushion. Sasuke tried to use his Fireball Jutsu, but the ice didn't even melt. The heat was instantly dispersed.

They were losing. Naruto was on his knees, gasping for air. Sasuke was bleeding heavily, his vision blurring.

I can't lose here, Sasuke thought, his desperation reaching an absolute crescendo. I have to kill him. I have to surpass Kenjiro! I need power!

As Haku moved to throw a lethal volley at the exhausted Naruto, Sasuke's eyes snapped open.

A surge of dormant chakra flooded his optic nerves. The world suddenly slowed down. The blurry, untrackable movements of the masked boy gained clarity. He could see the trajectory of the needles. He could see Haku stepping out of the mirror.

Sasuke’s eyes were blood red, a single tomoe spinning lazily in the left, and two in the right.

The Sharingan.

Sasuke let out a breath, a manic, triumphant grin spreading across his bloody face. He could see it. He could see everything. He intercepted the needles aimed at Naruto, grabbing them out of the air.

"I can see you," Sasuke declared, his voice trembling with sheer exhilaration. He turned to look at Kenjiro. Look at me. Look at my power. I've awakened it. I'm going to—

"Pattern acquired," Kenjiro said quietly.

Sasuke froze.

Kenjiro wasn't looking at Sasuke's Sharingan. He hadn't even noticed it. He was staring intensely at a specific mirror on the upper left side of the dome.

Kenjiro had spent the entire fight doing nothing but dodging and observing. He let Naruto and Sasuke act as bait, meticulously tracking the microscopic shifts in the ice, calculating the exact timing of Haku's transitions, and predicting the blind spot in the jutsu's rotation.

Haku shifted, preparing his final attack.

Sasuke braced himself, ready to use his new eyes to intercept and land the killing blow, ready to prove his absolute superiority.

But Kenjiro moved first.

He didn't use Swift Release. He didn't need to. He had already predicted exactly where Haku would be three seconds before Haku even made the decision to move.

Kenjiro leaped, kicking off Naruto’s shoulder, rebounding off Sasuke's back, and launching himself directly toward the upper-left mirror.

Haku materialized in that exact mirror, his hand raised to throw the needles.

He found Kenjiro Kazama staring directly into his soul, a millimeter away from the glass.

"Impossible—" Haku gasped.

"Checkmate," Kenjiro whispered.

Kenjiro slammed his palm against the ice mirror, directly over Haku's chest. He channeled every single ounce of wind chakra he had left, condensing it into a microscopic point of impact.

Wind Style: Shattering Palm.

The ice didn't just break. It exploded outward in a violent concussive shockwave. Haku screamed as the kinetic force shattered the mirror into dust and struck him squarely in the chest, breaking his ribs and launching him entirely out of the dome.

Without the caster to maintain it, the remaining ice mirrors instantly cracked, groaned, and collapsed into a shower of harmless, glittering snow.

The death trap was destroyed.

Kenjiro landed gracefully on his feet in the snow, exhaling a long, visible breath of cold air. He sheathed his tantō. He didn't look triumphant. He just looked tired.

Sasuke stood there, his red eyes spinning, his newly awakened Sharingan staring at the broken ice.

The triumph in his chest died, replaced by an icy, suffocating void.

He had awakened the legendary bloodline of his clan. He had gained the power of the gods. And he didn't even get to use it. Kenjiro hadn't needed magic eyes. He hadn't needed a bloodline limit. He had used pure, unadulterated observation and physics to dismantle an unbreakable jutsu.

Kenjiro had stolen his moment. Again.

Naruto pushed himself off the ground, pulling a needle from his cheek. He looked at Sasuke's red eyes, then at Kenjiro, who was already walking toward Kakashi to assist in the fight against Zabuza.

Naruto realized something profound in that moment, watching the snow fall around them.

Loud declarations didn't break the ice. Fancy bloodlines didn't break the ice.

Skill broke the ice. Strategy broke the ice.

If Naruto wanted to be Hokage, if he wanted to stand on the peak alongside Kenjiro Kazama, he had to stop playing the loudmouthed underdog. He had to become a real weapon.

"Sasuke," Naruto said quietly, his voice devoid of its usual brashness.

Sasuke didn't answer. His Sharingan faded, his eyes returning to black. He stared at the ground, his fists clenched so tight his fingernails drew blood from his palms. The hatred in his heart was no longer just directed at Itachi. It was mutating, twisting into a dark, obsessive hunger directed entirely at the boy with slate-grey eyes.

The bridge battle would end shortly after. Kakashi’s Raikiri would pierce Haku, who sacrificed himself for Zabuza. Zabuza would turn on Gato, slaughtering the thugs before dying beside his precious tool.

Team 7 would return to the Hidden Leaf Village as heroes.

But as they walked through the gates, the dynamic was irrevocably fractured.

Kenjiro walked at the front, his gaze fixed on the horizon, seeking higher peaks to conquer.

Naruto walked quietly in the middle, his mind racing with new, mature resolve, shedding the skin of his childhood.

And Sasuke Uchiha walked at the rear, enveloped in shadows, the whisper of true darkness beginning to take root in his soul.

The weeks following the mission to the Land of Waves were draped in a suffocating, heavy silence.

On the surface, Team 7 had returned as heroes. They had survived an encounter with the Demon of the Mist, protected the bridge builder, and secured the economic future of an entire nation. But beneath the veneer of success, the foundation of the squad was fracturing at an exponential rate.

Naruto Uzumaki had changed. The hyperactive, screaming prankster had not entirely vanished, but his edges had sharpened. He no longer complained about D-rank missions. He executed them with a quiet, burning intensity, rushing through the menial tasks so he could spend the rest of his daylight hours deep in the woods, beating his fists against tree trunks until his knuckles bled. He had realized that loudly proclaiming he would be Hokage meant nothing in the face of a giant sword.

Sasuke Uchiha was a walking phantom. He barely spoke to Sakura. He ignored Naruto. And he absolutely refused to look Kenjiro in the eye. Sasuke spent his nights awake, his Sharingan blazing in the darkness of his empty compound, his mind replaying the image of Kenjiro shattering Haku’s ice mirror. Checkmate. The word echoed in his skull like a curse. Sasuke pushed his body past the point of exhaustion, desperate to increase his physical speed to match his new eyes, but every time he thought he had made progress, he would see Kenjiro moving through the village—a blur of perfect, effortless kinetic grace—and Sasuke would realize he was still miles behind.

Kenjiro Kazama simply existed in a state of perpetual refinement. He did not boast about Wave. He did not acknowledge the growing chasm between him and the Uchiha. To Kenjiro, the mission was over, the data was collected, and the variables were adjusted. He had identified his own weakness—a low chakra capacity that limited his stamina in prolonged fights—and was currently restructuring his entire combat style to compensate.

This was the powder keg Kakashi Hatake walked into when he summoned them to the bridge at the center of the village.

"You're late!" Sakura scolded out of sheer habit, though her voice lacked its usual bite.

Kakashi offered a lazy eye-smile, pulling three blank forms from his flak jacket. "Sorry. I got lost on the path of life. Anyway, I’ll get straight to the point. I’ve nominated you all for the Chunin Selection Exams."

He handed the applications out. Naruto stared at the paper, his blue eyes narrowing not with his usual manic glee, but with a calculated, predatory focus. Sakura looked terrified. Sasuke’s grip on the paper tightened until the edges crumpled.

The Chunin Exams, Sasuke thought, his heart accelerating. Elite Genin from all over the world. A crucible. This is where I prove the Uchiha are the strongest. This is where I break him.

Kakashi watched the micro-expressions of his students. He saw the dark, manic glint in Sasuke’s eyes and felt a pang of deep concern. "Participation is strictly voluntary," Kakashi noted. "If you choose to enter, go to room 301 at the Academy tomorrow by 3:00 PM."

Without a word, Kenjiro took his paper, folded it precisely into a crisp square, placed it in his pouch, and walked away.

Sasuke glared at the boy's retreating back. Walk away while you can, Kazama. When the exams start, there’s no place to hide.

The tension inside the ninja Academy the following afternoon was thick enough to cut with a kunai. Genin from the Sand, the Rain, the Grass, and the Sound milled about, sizing each other up.

When Team 7 arrived on the second floor, they found a massive crowd of genin being physically blocked from entering Room 301 by two older, thuggish-looking shinobi. A boy in a green jumpsuit was currently on the floor, having just been kicked backward by one of the guards.

"You think you can take the Chunin Exams?" one of the guards sneered. "You kids should go home before you get killed."

Sakura analyzed the room. "Excuse me," she said, stepping forward, trying to project confidence. "But we need to get through. And please undo the genjutsu. We’re going to the third floor, not the second."

The crowd murmured. The sign above the door clearly read '301', but Sakura’s chakra control allowed her to easily pierce the low-level illusion.

"Oh? You noticed?" The guard smirked, pulling his leg back to deliver a swift kick to Sakura’s face.

Sasuke moved instantly. His body blurred forward, his leg raising to intercept the guard's strike. He was eager to test his speed, eager to show the crowd—and Kenjiro—that he was not the weakling from the bridge.

But before Sasuke’s leg could even fully extend, and before the guard’s kick could land, the air pressure in the hallway shifted.

A hand, wrapped in white tactical tape, materialized between them. It casually caught the guard's shin, halting the momentum completely, while the other hand rested gently against Sasuke’s rising ankle, pressing it firmly back down to the floor.

The hallway went dead silent.

Kenjiro stood between them, looking utterly bored. He hadn't used Swift Release. He had simply walked through the blind spots of the crowd and inserted himself into the conflict with flawless timing.

"Unnecessary energy expenditure," Kenjiro said, his slate-grey eyes glancing at the guard, then at Sasuke. "The illusion is dispelled. Engaging in a physical altercation before the vetting process violates basic tactical conservation. Lower your legs."

The guard, sweating profusely as he tried to pull his leg back from Kenjiro’s iron grip, swallowed hard. Kenjiro released him, and the guard stumbled backward.

Sasuke ripped his leg away, his face flushing with humiliation. "I had it," Sasuke hissed, his voice vibrating with venom. "Keep your hands off me, Kazama."

"Your trajectory was off by three degrees," Kenjiro corrected monotonously. "Your strike would have collided with his knee bone, potentially fracturing your metatarsals. I preserved your mobility. You're welcome."

Sasuke looked like he was about to draw a kunai right there in the hallway, but Naruto grabbed his shoulder. "Save it for the exams, Sasuke," Naruto said quietly.

Team 7 bypassed the bewildered crowd and walked up the stairs to the actual third floor. But as they reached the landing, a voice called out.

"You! The one with the dark hair and the attitude!"

Sasuke turned. Standing at the end of the hall was the boy in the green jumpsuit they had seen on the floor earlier. He had bowl-cut hair, impossibly thick eyebrows, and circular eyes that burned with intense determination.

"My name is Rock Lee," the boy announced, striking a dramatic martial arts pose. "You are Sasuke Uchiha. I challenge you to a fight right here, right now!"

Sasuke scoffed, his annoyance boiling over. "You want to fight me? You looked pathetic down there. You couldn't even get past a gatekeeper."

"That was a ruse," Lee said simply. "I wish to test my techniques against the legendary lineage of the Uchiha. I want to see if hard work can surpass a natural-born genius."

The words hit Sasuke like a physical blow. Natural-born genius. He thought of Kenjiro. He thought of the ice mirrors. Sasuke’s Sharingan flared to life, bleeding red into his irises, the two tomoe spinning furiously.

"You want to test me?" Sasuke sneered, dropping his backpack. "Five minutes. That’s all I need to break you."

Naruto leaned against the wall, watching intently. Sakura chewed her lip nervously. Kenjiro pulled out a small whetstone and began running it along the dull side of a kunai, seemingly uninterested.

"Begin!" Lee shouted.

Sasuke charged. His eyes tracked every micro-movement of Lee’s body. He saw Lee shift his weight. He saw the punch coming. It was predictable. Sasuke ducked under the fist, pivoting to deliver a devastating counter-punch to Lee's ribs.

But Lee wasn't there.

Sasuke’s eyes widened. His Sharingan saw Lee move, but the signal traveling from Sasuke’s optic nerve to his brain, and from his brain to his muscles, was too slow.

Smack.

Lee’s foot connected squarely with Sasuke’s jaw. The Uchiha was launched backward, tumbling across the wooden floorboards.

"Sasuke!" Sakura screamed.

Sasuke scrambled to his feet, blood trickling from his lip. What is this?! My eyes can see him! Why can't my body dodge?!

"The Sharingan is incredible," Lee said, taking a Crane stance. "It allows you to read my movements. But it doesn't matter if your body lacks the physical conditioning to react to the information. My Taijutsu is not a trick. It is pure, agonizingly forged speed."

Sasuke let out a furious roar, lunging forward with a flurry of punches and kicks. Lee parried every single one with insulting ease. It wasn't even a contest. Lee ducked under a high kick, swept Sasuke’s standing leg, and as Sasuke fell, Lee delivered a brutal upward kick to Sasuke’s chin, launching him into the air.

"Dancing Leaf Shadow!" Lee shouted, appearing instantly behind the airborne Sasuke, wrapping bandages around the Uchiha’s waist to prepare for a devastating piledriver. "This is the end!"

Sasuke was paralyzed. The sheer, overwhelming reality of his own weakness crushed his lungs. He was going to lose. To a boy who looked like a joke.

Am I really this weak?!

Just as Lee prepared to initiate the downward spin, a metallic shing cut through the air.

A kunai struck the wall directly in front of Lee’s face, snapping the bandages and forcing Lee to break the grapple to avoid impaling himself on the blade. Lee landed gracefully on the floor, while Sasuke crashed into a heap of bruised limbs and shattered pride.

Lee looked up.

Kenjiro was standing ten feet away, his arm still outstretched from the throw. He had finally put his whetstone away.

"The application deadline is in exactly four minutes," Kenjiro stated, his voice echoing in the silent hallway. "If you paralyze him, our squad is disqualified from the exams. I will not allow my progress to be halted by his inadequacy."

Lee’s eyes locked onto Kenjiro. The Green Beast of Konoha possessed an animalistic instinct for danger, and every alarm bell in his head was suddenly ringing. The boy with the grey eyes didn't have the Sharingan, but his stance was flawless.

"You..." Lee narrowed his eyes. "You are the one they speak of. Kenjiro Kazama."

"I am."

"They say you are the fastest Genin in the Leaf," Lee’s blood began to pump with sheer excitement. "Please! Allow me to test that claim!"

Lee didn't wait for an answer. He vanished, leaving a small crater in the floorboards.

Sasuke, coughing up blood on the floor, opened his Sharingan to track the movement. He watched Lee blur toward Kenjiro with a speed that defied logic.

But Kenjiro didn't brace for impact. He didn't tense up.

Swift Release: First Step.

The collision sounded like a bomb going off.

A shockwave of displaced air shattered the nearby windows. Naruto had to shield his face from the wind. Sakura was knocked onto her backside.

When the dust cleared, the hallway was frozen in a terrifying tableau.

Lee’s fist, wrapped in bandages, was mere millimeters from Kenjiro’s face. But it was stopped dead. Kenjiro’s hand was wrapped around Lee’s wrist, his fingers digging deeply into the pressure points.

Simultaneously, Kenjiro’s other hand—formed into a rigid, spear-like strike—was resting gently against Lee’s throat, exactly over the carotid artery.

Lee’s eyes were wide with absolute shock. He hadn't even seen Kenjiro's counter.

"Your linear acceleration is commendable," Kenjiro analyzed, his voice completely calm, his breathing perfectly even despite the explosive burst of speed. "But your telegraphing is atrocious. You rely entirely on kinetic mass and ignore aerodynamic drag. If this were a battlefield, you would be dead."

Before Lee could respond, a massive puff of smoke erupted in the hallway, revealing a giant turtle, and shortly after, an adult Jonin wearing an identical green jumpsuit—Might Guy.

Guy quickly reprimanded Lee for nearly using a forbidden jutsu on Sasuke, but as the eccentric Jonin looked at Kenjiro, his usual boisterous demeanor slipped. Guy recognized the Kazama Taijutsu style. He recognized the terrifying efficiency of the boy's posture.

To catch Lee’s strike at that speed... Guy thought, a drop of sweat rolling down his temple. Kakashi, what kind of monster are you raising?

After Guy and Lee departed, the hallway fell quiet again.

Naruto helped a trembling Sasuke to his feet. Sasuke slapped Naruto’s hand away. The Uchiha leaned against the wall, his hair shadowing his eyes. His body shook uncontrollably.

He had been utterly dominated by Rock Lee. But Kenjiro had stopped Lee’s full-speed assault without breaking a sweat, holding his life in his hands as casually as holding a cup of tea.

The gap wasn't a canyon anymore. It was an entirely different universe.

"Get up, Uchiha," Kenjiro said coldly, walking toward the doors of Room 301. "Your self-pity is wasting time."

Sasuke closed his eyes. The darkness in his heart expanded, swallowing the last remnants of his pride. I need power. I don't care where it comes from. I don't care what it costs. I will not be looked down upon anymore.

The first phase of the Chunin Exams was a psychological torture chamber disguised as a written test. Commanded by the sadistic Ibiki Morino, the true purpose was to test the Genin's ability to gather intelligence covertly.

Naruto, who didn't know a single answer, relied entirely on sheer, unyielding willpower, refusing to quit even when threatened with permanent Genin status. Sasuke used his Sharingan to perfectly mimic the pencil movements of a planted Chunin in the front row.

Kenjiro didn't use a jutsu. He simply sat back in his chair, his grey eyes scanning the room. He watched the micro-expressions of the examinees. He observed the tension in their shoulders, the dilation of their pupils, the subtle sounds of their breathing. Within ten minutes, he had identified the three planted Chunin based purely on their relaxed physiological states.

He didn't need to read their pencils. He read the subtle reflections in the window pane next to him, calculating the inverted angles of their test papers with mathematical precision. He finished the test in fifteen minutes and spent the remaining forty-five meditating.

When Ibiki finally passed them all, citing Naruto’s ridiculous outburst of determination as the catalyst that broke the psychological pressure, the window shattered.

Anko Mitarashi swung into the room, declaring the start of the Second Exam.

The Forest of Death.

The towering, ancient trees of Training Ground 44 blotted out the sun, casting the forest floor into perpetual twilight. The air was thick with humidity, the smell of rotting wood, and the metallic tang of blood. Every squad was given either an Earth or Heaven scroll; they needed both to pass. Team 7 carried the Heaven scroll.

"Keep your guard up," Sasuke whispered, gripping his kunai. "Everything in this forest wants to kill us."

"Affirmative," Kenjiro replied, walking in the center of their diamond formation. "However, the flora and fauna are secondary threats. The primary threat vector is human."

A sudden, violent gust of wind tore through the canopy, unnatural in its sheer ferocity. A massive snake, easily sixty feet long, erupted from the brush, its jaws unhinged, lunging directly at Naruto.

Naruto barely had time to scream before the snake swallowed him whole, dragging him into the underbrush.

"Naruto!" Sakura shrieked.

"Maintain position!" Kenjiro ordered, his tantō snapping into his hand. "Uzumaki has enough chakra to burst it from the inside. We have a larger problem."

From the shadows of the trees, a figure emerged. It was a Grass Ninja, a woman with long black hair, pale skin, and a wide, unnatural smile. She wore a bamboo hat that cast a dark shadow over her eyes.

"My, my," the Grass Ninja hissed, her voice vibrating with a sinister, inhuman frequency. "What beautiful prey."

Instantly, the air in the clearing turned to ice.

It wasn't a jutsu. It was raw, unadulterated Killing Intent. It was so dense, so horrifically vile, that it manifested as a physical hallucination. Sasuke and Sakura both saw their own brutal, bloody deaths flash before their eyes. Sakura vomited onto the forest floor, collapsing in terror. Sasuke dropped to his knees, his hands clutching his head, a pathetic whimper escaping his throat.

I can't move. I can't breathe. I have to run. I have to kill myself! Sasuke’s mind shattered under the weight of the predator's gaze.

The Grass Ninja—Orochimaru in disguise—chuckled, pulling out a kunai. "So fragile."

Orochimaru threw the kunai with lethal precision, aiming directly at Sasuke’s frozen head.

CLANG.

Sparks flew as the kunai was violently deflected.

Kenjiro stood in front of Sasuke, his tantō held in a reverse grip. His chest was heaving slightly, a bead of sweat tracing down his jawline. He was feeling the Killing Intent too, but his mind—forged in the absolute zero discipline of the Kazama—refused to break. He had compartmentalized the fear, locking it behind a wall of pure, tactical logic.

"Oh?" Orochimaru tilted his head, his serpentine eyes narrowing with genuine intrigue. "You blocked that? Fascinating. A child who does not break under my gaze."

"Your psychological warfare is effective," Kenjiro stated, his voice tight but controlled. "But it is merely a biochemical response in the amygdala. I can suppress it."

"Let us see how long you can suppress death," Orochimaru hissed, his neck suddenly stretching to an impossible length, his head rocketing toward Kenjiro with fangs bared.

"Swift Release!"

Kenjiro vanished. He didn't just dodge; he used the dense, humid air of the forest to his advantage. He appeared directly above Orochimaru’s extended neck, driving his tantō downward. The blade sliced deeply into the flesh, but no blood spilled. Instead, thousands of small, writhing snakes burst from the wound.

Substitution. No, a localized body-fluid manipulation, Kenjiro calculated rapidly, kicking off the snake mass to gain altitude.

Orochimaru’s body materialized from the trunk of a tree behind Kenjiro. "Wind Style: Great Breakthrough!"

A massive, hurricane-force gale blasted from Orochimaru's mouth. The trees splintered. The ground was ripped apart.

Kenjiro couldn't dodge mid-air. He rapidly wove three hand signs. Wind Style: Gale Palm! He fired a concentrated burst of wind directly into Orochimaru’s hurricane. It wasn't meant to overpower the Sannin's jutsu—that was mathematically impossible—but the opposing forces created a micro-vacuum that violently redirected Kenjiro’s trajectory, throwing him safely out of the blast radius.

He landed gracefully on a high branch, immediately drawing three shuriken laced with explosive tags. He didn't throw them at Orochimaru. He threw them at the canopy above the Sannin.

The explosions shattered the massive branches, sending tons of heavy timber crashing down on Orochimaru's position.

Orochimaru blurred out of the falling debris, landing on a nearby branch. He licked his lips with a ridiculously long tongue.

Incredible, the Sannin thought, his blood pumping with a twisted thrill. His physical strength is limited, but his tactical processing speed is monstrous. He fights like Sakumo Hatake, but with the spatial awareness of Minato Namikaze. A beautiful, beautiful weapon.

Down below, Sasuke watched the exchange through the haze of his own paralyzing terror.

Kenjiro was fighting a god. A literal monster that had reduced Sasuke to a weeping, suicidal wreck with just a glare. And Kenjiro was holding his own. He was dodging, countering, and anticipating. He wasn't winning, but he was surviving with a brutal, flawless elegance.

"Why..." Sasuke choked out, his nails digging into the dirt. "Why am I so weak?!"

Suddenly, Naruto burst from the brush, covered in snake slime but roaring with defiance. "Get away from them, you freak!"

Naruto charged, his chakra flaring with a violent, red hue. The Nine-Tails' chakra had leaked out in his anger. He engaged Orochimaru in a chaotic, brawling exchange. For a moment, the sheer unpredictability of Naruto’s wild strikes pushed the Sannin back.

But Orochimaru merely smiled. He recognized the red chakra. "The Jinchuriki. You are a nuisance."

Orochimaru formed a seal, his fingers igniting with purple flames. Five-Pronged Seal. He slammed his hand directly into Naruto’s stomach. The blonde boy screamed in agony, his red chakra instantly short-circuiting, and he plummeted unconscious toward the forest floor.

Sakura managed to catch him, using a kunai to pin his jacket to a tree trunk, preventing him from falling to his death.

Orochimaru turned his attention back to Kenjiro. "Now, where were we? Ah, yes. I was going to see what you look like on the inside."

Orochimaru lunged, his speed instantly doubling. He had been holding back.

Kenjiro barely had time to blink. He brought his tantō up to block, but Orochimaru’s fist bypassed the blade entirely, striking Kenjiro in the solar plexus. The kinetic force was like a cannonball. Kenjiro’s ribs cracked. He coughed up blood, flying backward and slamming violently into the trunk of a massive tree.

He slumped to the branch, his vision swimming, his breath coming in ragged gasps. He tried to stand, but his legs wouldn't obey. His chakra was depleted. His physical limits had been breached.

Orochimaru slithered toward him, looming over the broken prodigy. The Sannin reached out, running a pale, cold finger down Kenjiro’s cheek.

"You are a marvel, Kazama," Orochimaru whispered softly. "Such discipline. Such a perfectly fortified mind. But that is exactly why you are of no use to me as a vessel. If I tried to take your body, your sheer will would fight me until the host died. You are too rigid. You would rather snap than bend."

Orochimaru stood up, looking down at the forest floor, where Sasuke was still kneeling in the dirt, trembling, his Sharingan spinning in absolute despair.

"But him..." Orochimaru smiled, a chilling, viper’s grin. "He is full of cracks. He is desperate. And his eyes... they are exactly what I need."

Kenjiro’s eyes widened slightly. Target acquisition shift. He's after the Uchiha's bloodline.

Kenjiro tried to force his muscles to move, reaching for a kunai, but his body betrayed him.

Orochimaru vanished from the branch.

Sasuke looked up just in time to see the Grass Ninja materialize directly in front of him. Orochimaru’s neck stretched out once again, his jaws unhinging, revealing massive, venomous fangs.

Sasuke couldn't move. He couldn't fight. The disparity in power was total.

Orochimaru’s fangs sank deeply into the junction of Sasuke’s neck and shoulder.

Sasuke let out a scream that tore through the quiet of the forest, a sound of pure, unadulterated agony. Three black tomoe marks formed on his skin where the fangs had pierced, glowing with a malevolent, purple heat.

Orochimaru pulled back, retracting his neck. He wiped a drop of blood from his lips, his serpentine eyes locking onto Sasuke’s tear-filled, agonizing gaze.

Orochimaru leaned in close, his voice a sibilant whisper that bypassed Sasuke’s ears and etched itself directly into the boy's soul.

"Look at him, Sasuke," Orochimaru hissed, gesturing vaguely upward toward where Kenjiro lay broken on the branch. "Look at the monster you can never defeat. You play at being an avenger, but you are nothing but dust beneath his feet. You will never step out of his shadow. You will never kill your brother. Not with your pathetic, weak power."

Sasuke convulsed, clutching his neck, his vision turning red as the cursed chakra flooded his nervous system.

"I can give you the power to break him," Orochimaru whispered. "I can give you the power to stand at the peak. When you finally realize the Leaf Village can offer you nothing but mediocrity... seek me out. My name is Orochimaru."

With a final, chilling laugh, Orochimaru sank into the earth, leaving Team 7 broken, bleeding, and entirely defeated.

Sasuke collapsed into the dirt, screaming as the Curse Mark burned like liquid fire through his veins, before his mind mercifully shut down, plunging him into unconsciousness.

Kenjiro, fighting the agonizing pain of his cracked ribs, forced himself off the branch. He dropped heavily to the forest floor, his knees buckling upon impact.

Sakura was sobbing, completely overwhelmed. Naruto was unconscious. Sasuke was writhing in the dirt, a foul, dark chakra beginning to leak from the seal on his neck.

Kenjiro looked at the Uchiha. He recognized the seal. It was a parasitic chakra construct designed to hijack the host's nervous system, fueled by negative emotion.

He exploited the Uchiha’s inferiority complex, Kenjiro realized grimly. He planted a seed of absolute power in a boy starving for it.

Kenjiro sheathed his tantō. He dragged himself over to Sasuke, pulling a medical scroll from his pouch. "Haruno. Stop crying. We have a compromised asset. We need to find shelter before nightfall."

For the next three days, Kenjiro essentially dragged Team 7 through the Forest of Death. With Naruto knocked out by the Five-Pronged Seal and Sasuke battling the lethal fever of the Curse Mark, the burden of survival fell entirely on the Kazama.

When a team of Sound Ninja—Dosu, Zaku, and Kin—attacked them in a hollowed-out tree root, Kenjiro fought them off. He was injured, exhausted, and running on fumes, but his tactical brilliance never wavered. He used traps, misdirection, and guerrilla tactics to stall the Sound Genin until Lee, Team 10, and eventually an awakened, Curse-Mark-empowered Sasuke intervened.

When Sasuke awoke, his body covered in the black flame-like tattoos of the Curse Mark, his power was terrifying. He broke Zaku's arms with a sadistic glee that horrified Sakura and Naruto.

But when Sasuke’s manic, blood-red eyes locked onto Kenjiro, expecting to see fear, he found none.

Kenjiro leaned against a tree, clutching his broken ribs, and looked at the empowered Sasuke with absolute, chilling disgust.

"You look like a puppet on a string, Uchiha," Kenjiro said quietly.

The words cut through the Curse Mark's euphoria like ice. Sakura managed to hug Sasuke from behind, crying, and the marks receded, leaving Sasuke exhausted and hollow.

They barely managed to secure the second scroll and reach the central tower before the deadline.

The massive combat arena inside the central tower was brightly lit, a stark contrast to the gloom of the forest. The surviving teams were lined up before the Third Hokage, the Jonin instructors, and the proctors.

Kakashi looked at Team 7. They looked like they had been through a war. Naruto was battered, Sakura was traumatized, Sasuke was holding his neck in quiet agony, and Kenjiro—though standing perfectly straight—was clearly hiding significant structural damage.

"Due to the unprecedented number of survivors," the sickly proctor, Hayate Gekko, announced between coughs. "We will be holding preliminary matches right here, right now. One-on-one combat. The winners advance to the finals."

Sasuke’s match was first against Yoroi, a chakra-draining ninja. Despite Kakashi’s warning to forfeit due to the Curse Mark, Sasuke refused. He fought using sheer Taijutsu, copying Lee’s movements to deliver the Lion’s Barrage, winning the match while barely keeping the dark chakra at bay. Kakashi immediately dragged him away to seal the mark.

A few matches later, Hayate coughed into his hand.

"Next match... Kenjiro Kazama versus Dosu Kinuta."

Dosu, the leader of the Sound Team, stepped forward. He wore a large, metallic gauntlet on his arm, designed to amplify and weaponize sound waves. He had fought Kenjiro in the forest and knew the boy was injured.

"You’re bruised, Kazama," Dosu taunted, his single visible eye glaring from beneath his bandages. "My sound travels at the speed of... well, sound. You can't dodge it. Especially not with broken ribs."

Kenjiro stepped into the arena. He didn't say a word. He didn't draw his tantō. He simply adopted a loose, relaxed stance, his hands at his sides.

"Begin!" Hayate yelled.

Dosu charged, raising his gauntlet. "Resonating Echo Speaker!" He prepared to unleash a point-blank blast of concussive sound that would rupture Kenjiro’s eardrums and destroy his equilibrium.

Kenjiro didn't use Swift Release. His ribs couldn't handle the torque.

Instead, he used simple, terrifying geometry.

As Dosu swung his arm forward, Kenjiro stepped directly inside the man's guard, intentionally stepping into the blind spot of the gauntlet's acoustic cone. Before the sound waves could propagate outward, Kenjiro brought his right hand up in a devastating, open-palm strike, driving it directly into the underside of Dosu’s elbow joint.

CRACK.

The joint hyper-extended backward, snapping Dosu’s arm instantly.

Dosu screamed, dropping his arm, his jutsu misfiring harmlessly into the floor.

Before the scream could even fully leave Dosu’s throat, Kenjiro pivoted, using his left hand to grab the back of Dosu’s neck. With a fluid, brutal motion, he drove Dosu’s face squarely into his rising knee.

Dosu's mask shattered. Blood sprayed across the arena floor. The Sound Ninja’s eyes rolled back, and he collapsed, utterly unconscious.

The match was over.

Hayate looked at his stopwatch.

Three point two seconds.

The entire balcony above fell into a stunned, horrified silence. Gaara of the Sand narrowed his eyes, his bloodlust stirring. Neji Hyuga activated his Byakugan, stunned by the sheer, flawless efficiency of the chakra flow he had just witnessed.

"Winner... Kenjiro Kazama," Hayate coughed, waving his hand.

Kenjiro turned and walked calmly back up the stairs to the balcony. He didn't look at the crowd. He didn't celebrate. He just leaned against the wall next to Kakashi, closing his eyes to manage the pain in his ribs.

Naruto stared at Kenjiro. The sheer gap in their abilities was glaring. Sasuke had barely survived his match. Naruto knew he was going to have to bleed for his. And Kenjiro had just dismantled a Chunin-level threat in three seconds without even using his sword.

Several matches later, it was Naruto’s turn.

"Naruto Uzumaki versus Kiba Inuzuka."

The fight was a grueling, dirty, desperate brawl. Kiba and his ninja dog, Akamaru, relentlessly assaulted Naruto with Beast Clones and Fang Over Fang attacks. Naruto was beaten, battered, and bloodied. Everyone expected him to stay down.

But he didn't.

Naruto stood up, wiping the blood from his mouth. He didn't scream about being Hokage. He didn't throw a tantrum. He analyzed Kiba's movements, adapted to the speed, and used a brilliant tactical deception—transforming into Kiba to confuse the dog, and then using his Shadow Clones to set up a brand new, original combo.

"Uzumaki Barrage!" Naruto yelled, slamming Kiba into the ground, completely knocking him out.

The crowd was shocked. The dead-last of the Academy had just defeated the top prospect of the Inuzuka clan.

Naruto stood in the center of the arena, breathing heavily, his orange jumpsuit torn and stained with dirt and blood.

He didn't look at Sakura to see if she was impressed. He didn't look at Kakashi for approval.

Naruto looked up at the balcony.

His blue eyes, burning with a new, mature fire, locked directly onto the slate-grey eyes of Kenjiro Kazama.

Naruto slowly raised his bruised arm and pointed a single finger directly at Kenjiro.

"I'm coming for you," Naruto’s voice echoed in the silent arena. It wasn't a boast. It was a promise. "I'm climbing the mountain. You're next."

The Genin on the balcony murmured. Kankuro laughed. Shikamaru sighed.

But Kenjiro didn't laugh.

He looked down at the bruised, battered, utterly relentless blonde boy in the arena. Kenjiro saw the tactical growth. He saw the unbreakable will that Orochimaru had failed to account for.

Slowly, deliberately, Kenjiro pushed himself off the wall. He looked down at Naruto, and for the very first time since they had met, Kenjiro Kazama smiled. It was a small, razor-thin smile, but it was genuine.

He gave Naruto a single, respectful nod.

Acknowledgment.

Deep in the shadows of a medical room far below, Sasuke Uchiha sat in the darkness, the sealed Curse Mark throbbing on his neck. He could hear the crowd cheering for Naruto above. He knew Kenjiro had won in seconds.

Orochimaru’s viper whisper echoed in his mind, wrapping around his heart like a python.

You will never step out of his shadow without my power.

Sasuke clutched his neck, his Sharingan blazing to life in the pitch black.

"I will," Sasuke whispered to the empty room, the darkness finally consuming him. "I will have the power."

The sun blazed high above the Chunin Exam stadium, baking the immense circular arena in a stifling, oppressive heat. The stands were packed to maximum capacity, a sea of nobles, villagers, and shinobi from all across the elemental nations, their collective voices merging into a deafening, continuous roar.

Down in the competitors' box, the shadows offered little relief. Naruto Uzumaki paced like a caged tiger, his blue eyes constantly darting toward the stadium entrance. He had already fought and miraculously defeated the prodigy of the Hyuga clan, Neji, proving to the world that his declaration to change destiny wasn't just empty air. But his victory had been overshadowed by the glaring absence of the one person the crowd had truly come to see.

"Where is he?" Naruto muttered, gnawing on his thumbnail. "If he gets disqualified, I swear I’m gonna kill him myself!"

Shikamaru Nara leaned against the concrete wall, yawning loudly. "Give it a rest, Naruto. If Sasuke doesn’t show, he doesn’t show. It’s too troublesome to worry about someone else’s match."

Sitting on a bench a few feet away, Kenjiro Kazama was a statue of absolute stillness. He wore his standard dark grey tactical gear, though his left side was strapped with fresh, pristine bandages, concealing the cracked ribs he had sustained from Orochimaru in the forest. His tantō rested across his lap, and his slate-grey eyes were closed in deep meditation.

Kenjiro wasn’t pacing. He wasn’t worried. He was currently running hundreds of combat simulations in his mind, cataloging the physical data he had observed from every match so far. He had watched Naruto’s fight. He had seen the raw, unrefined burst of red chakra. An immense, unstable power source, Kenjiro had calculated. Inefficient, but devastatingly potent.

But the anomaly in his calculations was Gaara of the Sand.

Gaara stood in the center of the arena floor below, his arms crossed over his chest, his pale green eyes staring blankly at the wall. The gourd of sand on his back seemed to pulse with a life of its own. Kenjiro had analyzed Gaara’s previous match against Rock Lee. The Sand Genin’s absolute defense was mathematically flawless against standard physical attacks, and his offensive power was vast.

"The Uchiha is cutting it close," Kenjiro spoke, his voice quiet but carrying effortlessly over the crowd's din. "If he arrives late, it implies Kakashi took his training to the absolute time limit. That suggests a newly acquired, high-risk technique. He wouldn't risk disqualification for mere physical conditioning."

Before Naruto could respond, the proctor, Genma Shiranui, glanced at the clock and sighed. "Well, that’s time. Since Sasuke Uchiha is not here, by the rules of the Chunin Exams, I must declare him—"

A sudden gust of wind violently swept through the center of the arena. Leaves swirled in a miniature cyclone, blinding the front rows of the audience.

When the leaves settled, two figures stood back-to-back in the center of the dirt floor. Kakashi Hatake, hands in his pockets, offered his signature lazy eye-smile to the bewildered crowd. And beside him stood Sasuke Uchiha.

Sasuke had abandoned his traditional blue and white attire for a sleek, entirely black, high-collared combat suit. His hair was slightly longer, and his posture was entirely different. The brooding, tense energy of the Forest of Death was gone, replaced by a cold, coiled arrogance.

Naruto gripped the railing, grinning wildly. "He made it! That show-off!"

Kenjiro opened his eyes, observing the Uchiha’s stance. His center of gravity is lower. His muscle density in his legs has increased by approximately fifteen percent. Kakashi altered his kinetic foundation.

Up in the Kage box, the disguised Orochimaru smiled beneath his Kazekage robes, sensing the sealed Curse Mark on Sasuke's neck.

"Sorry we're late," Kakashi called out smoothly to the proctor. "You wouldn't believe the traffic."

Genma chuckled, stepping back. "You’re just in time. The match is Sasuke Uchiha versus Gaara. Everyone else, clear the arena."

Kakashi vanished to the spectator stands. Gaara didn't move, but his cork dissolved, and sand began to silently spill from his gourd, creeping across the ground like a living, golden serpent.

"You have exactly the same eyes as him," Gaara whispered, his voice trembling with a suppressed, psychotic bloodlust, remembering the sheer coldness of Kenjiro Kazama. "Eyes that know the true meaning of loneliness... eyes that only care for their own existence. I will prove my existence by killing you."

Sasuke smirked, his Sharingan blazing to life instantly. "Bring it on, freak."

"Begin!" Genma shouted.

Gaara unleashed a massive wave of sand, intended to crush Sasuke instantly. But before the sand could even crest, Sasuke vanished.

He didn't use a substitution. He didn't use a jutsu. He simply moved.

Up in the competitors' box, Rock Lee’s jaw dropped. "That’s... that’s my speed! He copied my Taijutsu speed!"

Sasuke reappeared directly behind Gaara, unleashing a devastating kick that bypassed the automatic sand shield entirely, slamming into Gaara’s face and sending the Sand ninja tumbling across the dirt.

The crowd erupted. Someone had finally bypassed the absolute defense.

Sasuke relentlessly assaulted Gaara, moving with a blinding speed that pushed the Uchiha's physical limits to the absolute brink. Every time the sand tried to form, Sasuke was already gone, striking from a new angle.

Kenjiro watched without emotion. Kakashi bypassed the Uchiha’s physiological limits by using the Sharingan to perfectly mimic Rock Lee’s muscle memory. An effective shortcut, but dangerous. Without the years of bone-conditioning Lee endured, the Uchiha is tearing his own muscle fibers with every step. He has a five-minute window before his stamina collapses.

Gaara, bleeding and completely unhinged, realized his sand couldn't keep up. He formed a rapid series of hand signs. "Shield of Sand!"

A massive, impenetrable sphere of dense sand completely enclosed Gaara. Spikes shot out from the surface, keeping Sasuke at bay. Inside, Gaara was utilizing his Third Eye jutsu, preparing something horrific.

Sasuke skidded to a halt, breathing heavily, sweat pouring down his face. The Lee-mimicry had already drained him. He knew Taijutsu wouldn't break that sphere.

Sasuke stepped back, retreating up the wall of the arena until he was fifty feet away. He dropped into a low crouch, his right hand gripping his left wrist.

This is it, Sasuke thought, his Sharingan spinning wildly. This is the power to break him. Look closely, Kazama.

Sasuke channeled an immense, violently dense amount of chakra into his right hand.

Suddenly, the arena was filled with a deafening, high-pitched screech, like the sound of a thousand birds crying out simultaneously. A brilliant, blinding blue light erupted from Sasuke’s palm, arcing with wild, untamed electricity.

"Chakra nature manipulation and form manipulation simultaneously," Kenjiro murmured, his eyes narrowing slightly, genuinely impressed. An assassination technique. Lightning Style.

"Chidori!" Sasuke roared.

Sasuke launched himself down the wall, his speed accelerating exponentially as the lightning enhanced his kinetic output. He left a trench in the earth behind him. He reached the sand sphere in a fraction of a second, thrusting his lightning-clad arm forward.

The Chidori screeched as it tore through the ultimate defense. The sheer piercing power of the lightning destabilized the earth-based sand, and Sasuke’s arm sank deep into the sphere.

Total silence fell over the arena.

Then, a horrific, bloodcurdling scream echoed from inside the sand. It wasn't just Gaara's voice; it was layered with something demonic, something ancient and hateful.

Blood—bright, crimson blood—trickled down the side of the sand sphere.

Gaara’s absolute defense had been pierced. Gaara had bled.

Sasuke smirked, but his triumph was instantly shattered when he felt a massive, monstrous claw wrap around his arm inside the sphere. The sheer, suffocating density of the chakra inside the sand was unlike anything Sasuke had ever felt. It was pure, unadulterated evil.

Sasuke panicked, violently yanking his arm free and leaping backward just as the sphere exploded.

Gaara stood in the crater, clutching a bleeding shoulder. But his face... his face was twisted in a rictus of sheer, agonizing madness. One of his eyes had transformed—it was a golden starburst with a black sclera. The arm that had grabbed Sasuke was monstrous, made of sand but pulsating with thick, blue veins of demonic chakra.

Gaara had begun his transformation into Shukaku.

"Blood... my blood..." Gaara shrieked, clutching his head, his sanity completely snapping.

Before the match could continue, the sky above the arena suddenly darkened.

A gentle, mesmerizing flurry of white feathers began to fall from the sky, drifting over the audience.

Kenjiro’s eyes snapped upward. A wide-scale Genjutsu.

"Release!" Kenjiro whispered, forming a single hand sign, instantly shattering the illusion before the feathers even touched him.

Beside him, Sakura did the same, shaking her head. But Shikamaru and Naruto slumped to the floor, instantly asleep, along with ninety percent of the stadium's audience.

A massive explosion rocked the Kage box. The Kazekage had taken the Third Hokage hostage, revealing himself to be Orochimaru. Sound and Sand ninja dropped their disguises, pouring into the arena.

The Invasion of Konoha had begun.

"Sakura! Wake them up!" Kenjiro ordered, his voice cutting through the sudden chaos like a knife.

In the arena below, Baki of the Sand Village ordered Kankuro and Temari to take the unstable Gaara and flee to the forest to complete his transformation. The siblings grabbed Gaara and bounded over the arena walls, disappearing into the trees.

Sasuke didn't hesitate. His blood was pumping with the adrenaline of the Chidori. He had pierced the monster. He could kill it. He bounded after them, ignoring Genma's shouts to stay back.

Kakashi appeared in the competitors' box, fending off two Sound ninja with effortless grace.

"Sakura, Naruto, Shikamaru, Kenjiro!" Kakashi commanded, biting his thumb and summoning his tracking dog, Pakkun. "Sasuke has gone after Gaara. That Sand Genin is a Jinchuriki, a Tailed Beast vessel. Sasuke cannot handle him. Your mission is C-rank verging on A-rank. Track Sasuke, stop him, and wait for backup. Do not engage Gaara directly!"

Naruto, now awake and vibrating with nervous energy, slammed his fist into his palm. "Let's go!"

Kenjiro didn't argue. He followed Pakkun, his mind already shifting from a tournament mindset to a theater of war.

The pursuit through the dense forests outside Konoha was grueling. Shikamaru stayed behind to stall a squad of Sound tracking ninja, buying them time.

Miles ahead, Sasuke Uchiha was pushing his body past the point of failure. His muscles screamed in agony, micro-tears forming in his calves from the Lee-mimicry. But his Sharingan spun with manic desperation. He had to catch Gaara. He had to prove that his power was absolute.

When Sasuke finally caught up to them in a wide, blasted clearing, Kankuro and Temari had been dispatched by Shino Aburame, who had tracked them independently.

It was just Sasuke and Gaara.

But Gaara was no longer human.

The Sand ninja was hunched over, his entire right side completely encased in the monstrous, sand-flesh of the One-Tails. A massive, thick tail swished behind him, shattering tree trunks with casual ease. His face was half-human, half-demon, and he was drooling a mixture of saliva and sand.

"Uchiha..." Gaara hissed, his voice a horrifying duality of boy and beast. "I will eat your heart!"

Gaara lunged. His speed, enhanced by Shukaku’s chakra, was terrifying.

Sasuke dodged, activating his Sharingan, but his body was too damaged to keep up. Gaara’s monstrous arm swiped Sasuke across the chest, sending the Uchiha crashing through three consecutive trees.

Sasuke coughed up blood, struggling to his knees. The terror from the Forest of Death threatened to return, but his pride fought it back.

No. I am an Uchiha. I am an elite. I will not lose to a freak!

Sasuke grasped his left wrist, channeling his remaining chakra. He needed another Chidori. It was the only thing that could pierce the armor.

But as the lightning began to chirp in his palm, a sudden, agonizing spike of pain erupted from the base of his neck.

Ba-thump.

The Curse Mark.

Orochimaru’s seal, reacting to Sasuke's depleted chakra and sheer desperation, violently forcibly activated. The black, flame-like tattoos surged across the left side of Sasuke’s face and torso, burning like acid.

Sasuke screamed, the Chidori fizzling out instantly. The pain was blinding, completely paralyzing his nervous system. He fell forward into the dirt, clutching his neck, completely helpless, a prisoner in his own body.

Gaara loomed over him, the monstrous sand-claw raised for the killing blow.

"Die!" Gaara roared.

Sasuke closed his eyes, his mind flashing with the image of Itachi, and then, inexplicably, the image of Kenjiro’s cold, grey eyes. I failed. I'm going to die in the dirt.

CLANG.

A shockwave of air blasted the clearing.

Sasuke opened his eyes.

He was still alive.

Standing over him, his tantō drawn and glowing with a fierce, concentrated layer of wind chakra, was Kenjiro Kazama.

Kenjiro had used Swift Release to cross the final distance, intercepting the massive, crushing blow of Gaara's sand-arm. The sheer weight of the strike was forcing Kenjiro’s boots deep into the earth, but the boy's posture was flawless, completely redirecting the kinetic force away from Sasuke's body.

"You are a liability, Uchiha," Kenjiro said without looking back, his voice strained under the immense pressure.

Suddenly, Naruto and Sakura dropped into the clearing from the trees.

"Sasuke!" Sakura screamed, running toward him.

"Sakura, get back!" Sasuke choked out through the pain of the Curse Mark.

Gaara’s demonic eye locked onto the pink-haired girl. A tendril of sand shot out, slamming Sakura into a massive tree trunk and pinning her there. The sand slowly began to constrict, suffocating her.

"Sakura!" Naruto yelled, drawing a kunai.

"Uzumaki, stay back!" Kenjiro barked, throwing Gaara’s massive arm off him with a burst of wind chakra and backflipping to create distance.

Kenjiro assessed the battlefield in a fraction of a second. Sakura was pinned; if she was crushed, she would die. Sasuke was paralyzed by the Curse Mark. Naruto was terrified, his hands shaking as he stared at the monstrosity before them.

The threat was beyond Chunin level. It was an incomplete Tailed Beast.

Tactical analysis, Kenjiro’s mind raced, completely devoid of fear. The target possesses immense blunt-force durability and overwhelming physical strength. His chakra density is anomalous. My Swift Release will allow me to evade, but my offensive output is insufficient to cause lethal damage through that armor. A war of attrition is mathematically guaranteed to result in my death.

Kenjiro looked at Sakura, then at Sasuke.

But if I retreat, they die.

Kenjiro inhaled deeply. He closed his eyes for a microsecond, silencing the pain of his broken ribs, tapping into the very bottom of his chakra reserves. He opened his slate-grey eyes. They were cold, empty, and entirely focused on the kill.

"I will sever the appendage pinning Haruno," Kenjiro commanded, his voice echoing with absolute authority. "Uzumaki, when I create the opening, you extract her and the Uchiha."

"K-Kenjiro, you can't fight that thing!" Naruto stammered. "It's a monster!"

"Monsters bleed," Kenjiro stated.

Kenjiro vanished.

Gaara roared, unleashing a barrage of sand bullets that shredded the forest canopy. Kenjiro moved through the air like a phantom, his Swift Release allowing him to step on falling leaves to change his trajectory mid-air. He was a blur of dark grey, entirely untrackable.

He materialized directly above Gaara’s monstrous right arm.

Wind Style: Vacuum Blade!

Kenjiro swung his tantō, unleashing a compressed crescent of wind chakra. The blade carved a deep trench into the sand-flesh, severing the tendril that was pinning Sakura.

Sakura gasped for air, falling to the ground. "Naruto! Grab her!" Kenjiro shouted.

Naruto snapped out of his daze, using his Shadow Clones to grab Sakura and drag Sasuke away from the epicenter of the fight.

Gaara shrieked in pain as his sand-arm was slashed. He glared at Kenjiro. "You... you are the fast one. I will crush you!"

Gaara unleashed a massive tsunami of sand.

Kenjiro didn't run. He dove directly into the wave. He used a localized burst of wind from his palms to part the sand just enough to slip through the gaps. He emerged right in front of Gaara’s face, driving his knee squarely into the human half of Gaara’s jaw.

The impact cracked bone. Gaara stumbled backward.

Kenjiro didn't let up. He unleashed a flawless, breathtaking sequence of Kenjutsu and Taijutsu. He targeted the joints of the sand armor, the exposed nerves, the blind spots. He was a surgeon dismantling a titan. He moved so fast that Gaara’s automatic sand defense couldn't track him.

Sasuke, lying paralyzed against a tree, watched through half-open, Curse-Mark-stained eyes.

He's doing it, Sasuke thought, a mixture of awe and absolute despair warring in his heart. He's fighting a Tailed Beast. He’s pushing it back.

But Kenjiro’s genius had a limit.

And that limit was physics.

Kenjiro landed a devastating, wind-enhanced palm strike directly to Gaara’s chest, intending to stop his heart. But the impact didn't penetrate. The sand armor was too thick, layered with the demonic chakra of Shukaku.

Gaara didn't even flinch. He just smiled a terrifying, jagged smile.

"My turn."

Before Kenjiro could use Swift Release to retreat, Gaara’s monstrous tail whipped around with the speed of a falling guillotine.

The sheer mass of the tail slammed directly into Kenjiro’s left side—right where Orochimaru had cracked his ribs.

The sound of shattering bone echoed through the clearing like a gunshot.

Kenjiro was launched through the air like a ragdoll. He crashed through a thick oak tree, the trunk splintering upon impact, and violently slammed into a massive boulder, leaving a spiderweb crater in the stone.

"Kenjiro!" Naruto screamed.

Kenjiro fell to the dirt, coughing up a massive volume of blood. His left arm hung uselessly at his side. His ribs were completely shattered, threatening to puncture his lung. His chakra network was entirely depleted, running on dangerous fumes.

He tried to push himself up with his tantō, but the metal, weakened by the constant friction of the sand and the immense blunt force, suddenly snapped in half with a pathetic tink.

Kenjiro Kazama, the absolute peak of the Academy, the untouchable prodigy... collapsed into the mud.

He didn't scream. He didn't curse. He looked at his broken sword, his analytical mind processing the final, unavoidable data point.

Kinetic output insufficient, Kenjiro thought, his vision going black around the edges. Target density exceeds my mathematical threshold. Combat ineffective. I... have failed.

Kenjiro’s eyes rolled back, and he fell unconscious.

Silence fell over the clearing, save for the horrific, bubbling laughter of Gaara.

"He is broken," Gaara laughed, turning his demonic gaze toward the remaining Genin. "Now... it is your turn to feel my existence!"

Naruto stood trembling in the center of the clearing.

His mind was a whirlwind of absolute terror. He looked at Sakura, who was unconscious from oxygen deprivation. He looked at Sasuke, the arrogant, elite Uchiha, who was writhing in the dirt, paralyzed and weeping from the pain of a curse.

And then, Naruto looked at Kenjiro.

The boy who never lost. The boy who was always five steps ahead. The boy who had stopped two Chunin assassins in a blink. The boy Naruto had pointed at and sworn to surpass.

He was a broken, bloody mess in the dirt.

If Kenjiro couldn't beat this monster, what could Naruto possibly do? He was the dead-last. He was the idiot. He was the one who always needed to be saved. The urge to run, to grab his friends and flee into the forest, was overwhelming.

But Gaara was preparing to unleash a massive sand spike that would impale all of them simultaneously.

“I’m climbing the mountain. You’re next.”

Naruto’s own words echoed in his ears.

If he ran now, he would never catch up to Kenjiro. If he let his friends die here, his dream of becoming Hokage was nothing but a pathetic joke. Kenjiro had thrown away his tactical advantage, thrown away his life, just to give Naruto a chance.

Naruto Uzumaki squeezed his eyes shut, and reached deep inside himself. Past the fear. Past the inadequacy.

He reached down into the darkest, most terrifying pit of his soul, where the cage of the Nine-Tailed Fox resided.

Hey, stupid fox, Naruto demanded in his mind. Give me your rent!

A massive, suffocating wave of pure, violent red chakra erupted from Naruto’s body. It was so intense that the ground beneath his feet cracked, and the air around him visibly distorted with heat.

Gaara paused, his demonic eye widening slightly as he recognized the presence of a sibling beast.

Naruto opened his eyes. The blue irises had turned blood-red, the pupils slitted like a predator's. The whisker marks on his face thickened, turning feral.

"You listen to me, you freak," Naruto growled, his voice laced with the guttural roar of the Nine-Tails. "You hurt my friends. You hurt the guy I’m gonna beat. I am going to tear you apart!"

Naruto slammed his fingers together into a cross-seal.

"Multi-Shadow Clone Jutsu!"

It wasn't two dozen clones. It wasn't fifty.

Two thousand Naruto clones erupted into the clearing, filling the forest entirely. The sheer volume of chakra was unfathomable. It was a brute-force answer to Gaara’s absolute defense.

"Uzumaki Naruto Ninja Handbook!" The clones roared in unison.

The swarm descended upon Gaara. They didn't use surgical precision like Kenjiro. They didn't use high-speed assassination tactics like Sasuke. They used raw, chaotic, relentless violence.

They punched, they kicked, they threw explosive tags. Gaara’s sand defense couldn't keep up with two thousand simultaneous attacks from every conceivable angle. Gaara was battered, bruised, and forced on the defensive, screaming in frustration as he was buried under a mountain of orange jumpsuits.

Sasuke watched from the ground, his Curse Mark receding slightly due to shock.

What... what is this chakra? Sasuke thought, his mind unable to process what he was seeing. This is Naruto? The dead-last? He has this much power inside him?!

"Enough!" Gaara roared.

The sand exploded violently, dispelling hundreds of clones in an instant. Gaara’s transformation accelerated. Sand completely engulfed his body, expanding into a massive, towering behemoth.

In a matter of seconds, the true form of Shukaku the One-Tails stood over the forest, a colossal, tanuki-like demon made of sand, covered in blue cursed seals. Gaara emerged from the forehead of the beast, his upper body exposed, laughing manically.

"I will put myself to sleep!" Gaara shouted, weaving a hand sign. "Play-Possum Jutsu!"

Gaara’s head slumped forward, unconscious. By falling asleep, he relinquished complete control of the body to the demon.

Shukaku roared, a sound that shook the very foundations of the earth. "I am free! Finally free! Let's spill some blood!"

Shukaku inhaled deeply, preparing to unleash a Wind Style: Air Bullet that would wipe the entire forest, and Team 7, off the map.

Naruto stood alone, his clones dispelled, looking up at a literal mountain of sand. He knew his raw chakra wasn't enough to fight a kaiju. He needed a monster of his own.

Naruto bit his thumb, smearing the blood across his palm. He channeled every ounce of the Nine-Tails chakra he could safely extract, slamming his hand onto the earth.

"Summoning Jutsu!"

A massive, violent explosion of white smoke engulfed the clearing.

Shukaku fired the Air Bullet, expecting to obliterate the boy.

But a massive, red, webbed hand reached out of the smoke, drawing a titanic yakuza-style short sword, and cleaved the Air Bullet entirely in half, redirecting the devastating wind into the sky.

The smoke cleared.

Standing face-to-face with the Tailed Beast was Gamabunta, the Chief Toad of Mount Myoboku. He was immense, smoking a massive pipe, a scar running over his eye.

Naruto stood atop Gamabunta’s head, pointing directly at Shukaku. "Take him down, Chief Toad!"

"You brought me out to fight a Tailed Beast?!" Gamabunta grumbled, taking a drag from his pipe. "You've got some nerve, kid. But I guess I can't let a demon tanuki run rampant in my territory."

The clash of the titans was apocalyptic.

Gamabunta and Shukaku brawled, flattening acres of ancient forest. Water bullets collided with air bullets, creating localized hurricanes. The shockwaves tossed the unconscious bodies of Sakura and Kenjiro around like leaves, forcing Sasuke to drag himself over to them, shielding them with his own battered body.

Sasuke stared up at the battle, his soul completely hollowed out.

He was protecting them, but he wasn't saving them. He was a spectator. Naruto Uzumaki—the boy Sasuke had always looked down on, the boy he had dismissed as a loudmouthed failure—was currently commanding a giant toad and fighting a demon god on equal footing.

Kenjiro failed, Sasuke thought, his mind spiraling. I failed. And Naruto... Naruto is saving us all.

The cognitive dissonance was agonizing. It completely shattered the foundation of Sasuke’s worldview. Hard work, genius, bloodlines—none of it mattered in the face of whatever monstrous power Naruto possessed.

"Kid!" Gamabunta yelled over the roar of the battle. "I can't hold him forever! The only way to stop this is to wake the medium up! I'll get you close, but you have to hit him hard enough to wake him!"

"Got it!" Naruto yelled.

Gamabunta leaped high into the air, dodging a barrage of sand spikes, and tackled Shukaku to the ground, pinning the beast’s arms.

"Now!"

Naruto leaped off the toad's head, flying through the air directly toward the sleeping Gaara protruding from the demon's forehead.

Gaara’s automatic sand defense tried to rise, but Naruto’s sheer momentum, fueled by the last embers of the red chakra, tore through it.

Naruto didn't use a kunai. He didn't use a jutsu.

He drew his head back and slammed his forehead directly into Gaara’s face with a sickening, bone-crushing CRACK.

The sheer concussive force of the headbutt shattered the Play-Possum jutsu instantly.

Gaara’s eyes snapped open, gasping for air.

With the medium awake, Shukaku’s control was broken. The massive sand demon groaned, its structural integrity failing. It crumbled into a massive mountain of loose sand, completely dissolving beneath them.

Naruto and Gaara plummeted from the sky, crashing into the branches of the surviving trees before hitting the forest floor.

Both boys were completely drained of chakra. They couldn't move their arms or legs. They were paralyzed by exhaustion, staring at each other across a few feet of dirt.

Gaara looked at Naruto, his psychotic rage replaced by profound confusion. "Why... why are you so strong? What are you?"

Naruto dragged himself forward, using his chin in the dirt, inching his way toward Gaara.

"Because... they saved me from the loneliness," Naruto rasped, tears pooling in his blue eyes. "I know the pain you're in. The monster inside you, the hatred. I lived it too. But I found people who look at me and see me, not the fox. And I will protect them... even if I have to kill you."

Gaara stared at the boy. The sheer, unconditional love Naruto possessed for his friends was an entirely alien concept to the Sand ninja. But seeing Naruto willing to crawl through the mud, dragging his broken body just to protect his precious people... it fundamentally broke the darkness in Gaara's heart.

Love, Gaara thought, a single tear escaping his eye. That is what makes him strong.

A few moments later, Temari and Kankuro arrived, having recovered. They prepared to finish Naruto off, but Gaara spoke, his voice quiet and devoid of malice.

"Stop. It's over. We're going home."

The Sand siblings stared in shock, but obeyed, picking up their little brother and retreating into the trees.

Naruto watched them go, a tired, goofy smile spreading across his bruised face before the darkness finally claimed his consciousness.

The pungent smell of antiseptic woke Sasuke Uchiha.

He opened his eyes to a white ceiling. The steady, rhythmic beeping of a heart monitor echoed in the sterile room. He turned his head slowly. The Curse Mark on his neck ached with a dull, suppressed throb.

He was in the Konoha Hospital. The invasion was over.

Sasuke slowly sat up in his bed, looking at his hands. They were trembling slightly.

He didn't feel relief that he had survived. He felt a suffocating, unbearable weight pressing down on his chest. The events of the forest replayed in his mind on a loop.

His failure against Gaara.

His paralysis from the Curse Mark.

Kenjiro stepping in to fight a Tailed Beast, proving once again that his tactical genius was vastly superior to the Sharingan.

And then... Naruto.

Naruto standing atop a giant toad. Naruto unleashing a sea of red chakra. Naruto doing what neither the Uchiha prodigy nor the Kazama genius could do.

I am at the bottom, Sasuke realized, his breath hitching. I am the weakest member of Team 7.

The thought was venomous. It corroded his mind. If he was weaker than Naruto, he would never defeat Kenjiro. If he could never defeat Kenjiro, he would never even lay a finger on Itachi. His entire life’s purpose was a lie. He was playing ninja, while the others were becoming monsters.

The door to his hospital room suddenly slid open.

Sasuke glared, expecting Kakashi or Sakura.

But it wasn't them.

Kenjiro Kazama walked in.

He looked terrible. His left arm was in a heavy cast and sling. His torso was tightly wrapped in thick, medical-grade bandages, visibly restricting his breathing. He walked with a slight limp, relying heavily on a wooden cane.

But his slate-grey eyes were just as sharp, just as impossibly calm as always.

Sasuke’s teeth ground together. "What are you doing here, Kazama? Come to gloat? Come to tell me how mathematically inadequate I was?"

Kenjiro stopped at the foot of Sasuke’s bed. He didn't respond to the bait. He just observed the Uchiha, noting the tension in his jaw, the erratic pulse visible in his neck, the dark bags under his eyes.

"The Third Hokage is dead," Kenjiro stated flatly. "Orochimaru assassinated him during the invasion. The village is currently destabilized."

Sasuke blinked, genuinely shocked by the news, but his bitterness quickly returned. "And? Why are you telling me this?"

"Because Orochimaru marked you," Kenjiro said, his voice lowering, cold and clinical. "He orchestrated the invasion to kill the Hokage, but his secondary objective was evaluating you. The Curse Mark is a brand. He intends to use your psychological fragility to isolate you."

"Shut up!" Sasuke snapped, his Sharingan flaring to life. "You don't know anything about me! You don't know what I need!"

"I know that your pride is a liability," Kenjiro countered smoothly, completely unbothered by the red eyes glaring at him. "You failed in the forest because you rely on borrowed power. You mimicked Lee's speed, and it tore your muscles. You relied on Kakashi's jutsu, and it drained your stamina. You are looking outward for strength, Uchiha, instead of forging it internally."

"Get out!" Sasuke roared, gripping the bedsheets until his knuckles turned white. "You lost too! You got your ribs crushed and your sword broken! Don't act like you're perfect!"

Kenjiro looked down at his cast. He didn't look angry. He looked remarkably at peace.

"I am aware of my failure," Kenjiro said quietly. "My kinetic output was insufficient. My tactical assessment of the Jinchuriki's durability was flawed. I lost."

Kenjiro looked back up at Sasuke, his grey eyes piercing straight through the Uchiha's bravado.

"But I will analyze the failure, adapt my parameters, and grow stronger. I can accept defeat, Uchiha. Can you?"

Sasuke froze. The words hit him harder than any physical blow ever could.

Kenjiro wasn't shattered by his loss. He wasn't consumed by it. He viewed it as data. He was already moving past it, already finding the next peak to climb. Kenjiro’s sheer, unbreakable mental resilience was the ultimate insult to Sasuke’s fragile, trauma-riddled ego.

Without waiting for an answer, Kenjiro turned and limped out of the room, leaving Sasuke alone with his demons.

Kenjiro walked down the hall, pushing through the pain in his chest, until he reached the room two doors down. He slid the door open.

Naruto was sitting up in bed, covered in bandages, slurping a cup of instant ramen that Iruka had snuck in for him. He paused, noodles hanging from his mouth, as Kenjiro entered.

"Kenjiro!" Naruto swallowed hard, his face lighting up with genuine relief. "You're okay! Man, you looked super dead back in the forest!"

Kenjiro closed the door. He walked over to the side of Naruto’s bed.

He didn't speak immediately. He just looked at the blonde boy. He saw the sheer, unrefined potential. He saw the heart that had compelled a giant toad to fight a demon.

Kenjiro placed his good hand on the footboard of the bed.

Slowly, fighting the agonizing pain in his shattered ribs, Kenjiro Kazama lowered his head in a deep, respectful bow.

Naruto’s eyes went wide, almost dropping his ramen cup. "Wh-Whoa! Hey, what are you doing?!"

"I made a tactical error in the forest," Kenjiro said, his voice soft, devoid of its usual clinical distance. "I engaged a target I could not defeat, leaving the squad vulnerable. If you had not possessed the power and the will to intervene, we would all be dead."

Kenjiro raised his head, his slate-grey eyes meeting Naruto’s blue ones.

"You saved my life, Naruto. Thank you."

Naruto stared at the prodigy. He had spent his entire life being looked down upon, being called a demon, a failure, a dead-last. He had chased the acknowledgment of his peers with a desperate, manic energy.

And now, the strongest Genin in the village, the boy who stood at the absolute peak of their generation, was bowing his head to him in genuine gratitude.

Naruto felt a lump form in his throat. He rubbed the back of his neck, a massive, brilliant grin breaking across his face.

"Heh. Well, you know me," Naruto said, his chest puffing out with quiet, earned pride. "Future Hokage and all. But hey... you softened him up for me! If you hadn't broken his jaw, I never could've headbutted him!"

Kenjiro let out a small, quiet huff of amusement. "A mathematically dubious claim, but I accept the sentiment."

Kenjiro turned to leave, but paused at the door, looking back over his shoulder.

"You said you were climbing the mountain, Uzumaki."

Naruto nodded, his grin fading into a look of serious, unshakable resolve. "Yeah. I am."

"Good," Kenjiro said, his eyes narrowing with a fierce, competitive fire that he rarely displayed. "Because I am currently constructing a new peak. Do not fall behind."

Kenjiro slid the door shut.

Naruto sat in the quiet room, looking down at his hands. He felt a profound shift in his soul. He wasn't the dead-last anymore. He had a true rival now. Not a rivalry born of spite and jealousy, like with Sasuke, but a rivalry born of mutual respect and the singular drive to push each other to absolute greatness.

Down the hall, Sasuke Uchiha sat in the dark, the viper's whisper echoing loudly in his mind.

I can give you the power to break him.

Sasuke reached up, his fingers tracing the cursed seal on his neck.

The paths of Team 7 had finally diverged. The prodigy would adapt. The underdog would rise. And the avenger... would fall.
